TCR and TS-CSE-CO mandate

• TCR– The TCR monitors and operates 24 hours a day, 365

days a year the entire technical infrastructure of CERN comprising :

• the electrical distribution network and energy consumption management

• heating, cooling, ventilation and air conditioning equipment

• safety installations, high vacuum and cryogenic systems • any other infrastructure equipment

• TS-CSE-CO– The TS-CSE-COntrol systems section is responsible for

the development and maintenance of the control systems and the computing environment for the Technical Control Room (TCR) …

TCR Hardware and OS (today)

• Hardware – 7 PC running Windows (PIV-2,8GHz)

» 3 pc with 1 screen» 3 pc with 2 shared screens» 1 pc with 3 shared screens

– 1 Unix Console– Connected to the Technical Network (172.18) and surveilled

by Spectrum– 13 CRT 21” screens, 2 19” LCD screens (CSAM), 2 CRT 19”

for operator personal use– 9 wired keyboard and mice, 1 wireless keyboard and mouse

• Constraints– 1 PC = 1 CAS application– PVSS zooming and overview capability– Number of keyboards and mice– 2 layers desk, not very ergonomic

• Administration– Windows updates– Windows GPO applied on operational consoles– 1 operational account: tcroper– Applications startup only allowed from Yacoma

Current Strategy

• Integration of industrial systems– Equipment groups provide TCR views based on their

tools– Development in equipment groups when possible– Additional TIM views where necessary– Use of common HCI conventions

• Operation and Maintenance– Use of standard components (PCs)– Use of IT support when possible– Experience with Windows consoles:

• Easy administration (1.5 persons on part time)• No downtime since two years• Cheap maintenance

Conclusion

• Choice of Windows as operating system was taken based on PCR choice some years ago

• Strategy for integration of LHC infrastructure monitoring is based on Windows and available standard industrial components and contracts with industry

• TCR system requirements do not change for CCC

• Maintenance and repair quite easy

• No manpower, no budget and no time planned for changes

• Feasability for migration to LINUX not yet studied
