TRVFA TAX CREDITS STILL AVAILABLE But, without new donations, scholarships are not!

The Rotary Vocational Fund of Arizona (TRVFA) is under a moratorium. For the first time in its 20 year history it has run out of money and cannot fund qualified vocational students unless and until additional funds are received. In 2010 we funded 73 individuals with $164,047.37 but the need continues.

The good news is that TRVFA is qualified to receive your donations and each donation provides you with an ARIZONA TAX CREDIT for the ‘Working Poor’ of up to $400/couple filing jointly and $200/person filing separately and this is IN ADDITION TO any of the other school tax credits available to Arizona residents.

TRVFA was started in 1990 to serve the vocational avenue of service through scholarships to needy individuals. It is recognized by the State of Arizona as a “qualified” charity helping the Working Poor. It is also a Tri-District project, which for those 20 years has helped hundreds of deserving students make a positive difference in our communities.

If you would like to help yourself and help TRVFA with a donation, you may make the donation online at www.trvfa.org or, if you wish to send a check, make it payable to TRVFA and send to: P.O. Box 11690, Chandler, Arizona 85248

The first half of the Rotary year is nearing its end. I am exhilarated by what I have seen and learned about our clubs in District 5490. There is a great deal of energy and talent among our Rotarians as they help to make a positive difference in our communities and around the world. I am proud to be a part of our District, and being elected Governor has been one of the greatest honors I have ever received.

I encourage all of you to become involved in your Club’s activities. The next step is to join us at the District level. You will find more rewards in serving than you thought possible. There are hundreds of Districtb5490 Rotarians who will agree with me.

We need your energy and talent!

At their November board meeting, and to begin December 1st, the board elected new officers with PDG Gary Whiting to serve as Board President; Phoenix Arcadia Rotarian, Michael Burke, Board Vice President; Phoenix 100 Rotarian, Dr. Paul Mittman, Board Secretary; and Scottsdale Rotarian, Scott Miller, Board Treasurer. Serving on the board as directors are:

PDG Gary Whiting will replace Board President, John Abbs, who was serving his second time as Board President. John is a past Club President of the Phoenix Camelback Rotary Club, past Assistant Governor and has served on the GOL-AZ Board almost since its beginning in 1985. Over the years, John and his family have personally home hosted several GOL-AZ needy children and their parents while they were undergoing the needed heart surgery to save the children’s lives. The board expressed appreciation to John and his family for their exceptional support,

GOL-AZ is facing some immediate and long term challenges such as financial contributions, hospital availably, patient and guardian travel restrictions, and Rotarian home hosting for both child and guardian during the surgical process. But, as in the past, the board has provided the wisdom and strategies to adapt and overcome such challenges. The board appreciates the excellent support from Arizona Rotarians and Rotary Clubs to help solve these past and present challenges.

DECEMBER IS

FAMILY MONTH

NEW

ASSISTANT

GOVERNOR IN

AREA 5—

JIM CLEMENS

December is Family Month—Message from Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammar, Foundation Trustee Chair

December is Family Month. To many Rotarians, the family of Rotary means

spouses, brothers, sisters, parents, and children. Their work for Rotary is very much appreciated. However, to me, as long as we do not have a Rotary family membership, relatives are not the family of Rotary – the family of Rotary consists of all Rotary International districts, clubs, Rotarians, programs, and The Rotary Foundation.

The Rotary Foundation is a huge part of the family of Rotary. All of the money raised, whether through Rotary International or The Rotary Foundation, is channeled through The Rotary Foundation. There are large sums of money coming every year to the Annual Programs Fund, the Permanent Fund, the Rotary Peace Centers Major Gifts Initiative and, right now, Rotary’s USD200 Million Challenge.

Even though the money-raising efforts for these four funds are separate, they are all linked together. Annual giving is the core of our business. The Permanent Fund was geared toward those Rotarians who can afford to give large sums and as a support to the Annual Programs Fund. The Rotary Peace Centers Major Gifts Initiative was also launched to approach those Rotarians who can afford to give more than average. Thus it is apparent how these three fundraising events depend on one another. In addition we have Rotary’s USD200 Million Challenge, which affects the annual giving, thus also the two other fundraising programs.

It is important that when we give money, we must donate to all of the above initiatives. By remembering this, we can continue Building Communities — Bridging Continents through Service Above Self.

Jim Clemens, President

Of Rotary Club of Prescott Valley

Has stepped up to Fill Assistant Governor

Vacancy in Area 5

As assistant district governor, Clemens is responsible for helping club presidents

assess their clubs and develop goals, visiting each club and offering guidance, and

aiding club leaders in scheduling and planning for the district's governor's official

visit.

"I like to be involved at the district level," Clemens said. "My job is to be the

eyes and ears of the district governor."

Jim first joined Rotary in in Carrollton, Ga., in 1992 because his employer

at the time encouraged him to become involved in service clubs. Since then, Clemens has moved around and now belongs to his fifth club. He

joined the Prescott Valley club about three years ago after moving to the area.

The gift of a wheelchair sets at least two people free—the recipient and their caregiver! Long-time Rotarians, new Rotarians, and at least one future Rotarian, found the opportunity to be a part of the wheelchair delivery both humbling and heartwarming.

District 5490’s friendship with District 4180 has a long history. The Friendship Conference recently held in Puebla, Mexico marked the 10th anniversary of the USA Mexico Friendship Conference. The only Rotary year a conference did not occur was 2009-2010. The swine flu epidemic and economic challenges in both countries caused the November, 2009 conference to be cancelled.

In May, of 2010, Jeanie Morgan, District Governor 2009-2010, Kevin Pitts, and PDG, Don Schiller traveled to Cuernavaca, Mexico to attend the District Conference in 4180 and to discuss the future of the long-standing relationship.

At that time, it was determined we should proceed with a conference in the fall of 2010, but with some significant changes over prior years:

• The conference would combine the friendship conference and grants exchange workshop with the hands-on project of delivering wheelchairs paid for with funds from District 5490. (Lake Havasu City Rotarian, Chuck Denney had been instrumental in raising funds and consolidating resources to purchase the container of wheelchairs to be shipped to Mexico.)

• Grants to be considered would be for larger, more sustainable projects, moving us closer to what similar grants will look like in The Rotary Foundation’s Future Vision Plan.

• To keep participation costs to a minimum, we requested home-host ing oppor tunit ies and informal meals and social opportunities.

Our friends in Mexico, under the leadership of Peter Buholzer, Conference Chair, Matching Grants Chair and Wheelchair Coordinator in District 4180, exceeded our expectations.

PDG, George Wheeler, Matching Grants Chair for District 5490 worked tirelessly to put as many grants together as possible after Arizona Rotarians prioritized the projects they seen presented. All participants felt the weekend was an outstanding success.
