VisionStatement

The Archangel Michael Greek Orthodox Church is dedicated to the continuation of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ’s ministry of salvation through the proclamation and teaching of the Gospel. We are a community of individuals and families who share the traditions and ageless beliefs of our Holy Orthodox Christian Faith.

“Lord, it is good for us to be here!” (Matthew 17:4)

On August 6th, the Orthodox Church celebrates one of

its “Twelve Great Feasts,” the Transfiguration of our

Lord (or Metamorphosi). This feast honors an important

event in the life of Christ and in the lives of His

followers, present company (and readers) included! The

Gospel reading for the feast day

details the experience of Peter,

James, and John witnessing and

being overcome by the light of

Christ’s glory—“His countenance

was altered, His face shone

like the sun” and “His raiment

[garments] became dazzling

white.” According to the Gospel accounts of Saints

Matthew, Mark and Luke, two additional figures, Moses

and Elijah, were present, joining Jesus and His disciples

whom He had led to a “high place to pray.” As this

great Transfiguration took place, a voice came from the

heavens saying: “This is my beloved Son, with whom

I am well pleased; listen to Him,” echoing the words

spoken by the heavenly voice at the Lord’s baptism.

Once again, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is revealed as

one of the Holy Trinity, as being fully human and fully

divine at the same time, as destined to be treated with

contempt, to suffer, to die on the cross and to triumph

over death and darkness.

It so happens that at this point in His earthly ministry,

Jesus had been preaching for three years, His disciples

were probably a bit overwhelmed, perhaps weary and

in need of a significant morale boost, all the more

because Christ was shortly “to go up to Jerusalem” to be

condemned to death (Matthew 20:18). In fact, Just prior

to this Transfiguration event, Peter questioned whether or

not Jesus really would suffer the passion, crucifixion and

death, in spite of several earlier occasions where Jesus

foretold the role He was to fulfill in salvation history.

Two thousand years later, from this side of the Resurrection,

what do we make of this experience of Christ’s Light and

how might we properly celebrate this Feast Day of the

Transfiguration? Did Jesus “change,” or was He simply seen

by His followers quite literally, in a different and “new”

light? Indeed the same Jesus who went up the mountain

with Peter, James, and John was the same Jesus who came

down—“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and

forever.” (Hebrews 13: 8)

Saint Maximos the Confessor

offers the following interpretation

that we might consider in guiding

us:

“The Lord does not always

appear in glory to all who stand before Him. To beginners

He appears in the form of a servant (Phil 2:7); to those

able to follow Him as He climbs the high mountain of His

Transfiguration He appears in the form of God, the form

in which He existed before the world came to be (John

17:5). It is therefore possible for the same Lord not to

appear in the same way to all who stand before Him, but

to appear to some in one way and to others in another

way, according to the measure of each person’s faith.”

This summer, our prayer is that we “stand well” before

our Lord with continuous effort, always attentive to our

need to make meaningful adjustments to our perspective

and to climb a little higher up the mountain to reflect the

glory of God a little more each day. But the mountain

won’t come to us, we must go to the mountain. Once

we arrive, I can assure you, it will be “good for us to be

here!”

In the Light and Love of our Lord,

Fr. Nikolas

“And now abide in faith, hope and love, these three. But the greatest of these is love.”1 Corinthians 13:13.

Philoptochos thanks the entire Archangel Michael Church com-munity for its support of our many endeavors in the past year. We are most appreciative of the hard work and dedication of our members and parishioners.

On June 1st, we enjoyed fellowship with our community at the annual End-of-the-Year Barbecue and contributed by serving coffee and desserts.

Our annual Philoptochos Year End Dinner held on June 23rd at Kyma in Roslyn was a wonderful evening. Special thanks to Di-ana Gardianos for organizing this event, with the assistance of Evangelia Cyprus. Thank you to all those members who joined us on this evening.

All obligations have been met both locally and nationally. In ad-dition, we have made hospital and nursing home visits, as well as visits to those who are homebound.

The Philoptochos held its last meeting of the season on June 2, 2014. Although we are now on a break for the summer, our work will continue throughout July and August. We look forward to see-ing you again at our next meeting scheduled for September 8, 2014.

AMC’s Little Helping Hands Fight Against Hunger

An amazing 126 boxes of Cheerios were donated by the stu-dents of our Greek school to help stock the food pantry at the Manhasset EOC. It is a Community Center that services the dis-advantaged of Great Neck, Manhasset, Roslyn, and Port Wash-ington. The Greek teachers, along with members of Philopto-chos, discussed the meaning of philanthropy and compassion with our students. The Shelter Rock Church, which helps run the food pantry, was thrilled to receive our donation and most appreciative to see the cereal boxes delivered to the site by several AMC Boy Scouts of Manhasset’s Troop 97. The AMGLI looks forward to participating in more community outreach projects in the upcoming school year.

Kindergarten and 1st grade students made parents and families proud at their graduation/moving up ceremony. They performed songs and danced so beautifully for us. Congratulations on moving up!!

The 7th graders were graciously joined by Presbytera Paula, who taught them how to make prosforo, while explaining the special and significant meanings behind prosforo and antithero. Thank you Presbytera! The 7th graders also had a great time at

We want to express our gratitude to Parish Council President Michael Cavounis and to each and every member of the Parish Council for approving the purchase of additional youth choir robes. We are very appreciative of their support of our Youth Music Ministry.

Mega thanks to Straty and Filanthe Efstathiadis and their daughters Eleni, Alexia, Christina, and Sophia for the four fabulous solid cherrywood bookshelves that now grace our choir robe room. We were in need of sturdy new bookcases for all our liturgical music books and binders; it was indeed a wonderful surprise! We would also like to thank them for the carved wooden music stand that has been put to good use every Wednesday evening at our rehearsals in the music classroom. We sincerely appreciate their thoughtfulness and generosity!

Every month at the Challenge Liturgy, our church reaches out to provide support, resources and fellowship to the develop-mentally challenged Orthodox community. On the Saturday of Lazarus, challenged individuals and their families from across Long Island and Queens gathered for the Hierarchical Liturgy that is officiated every year at our church by His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios. Archdeacon Panteleimon and our spiri-tual leaders, Fr. Dennis and Fr. Nikolas, were also celebrants at this beautiful service. Our protopsalti, Andreas Modenos, chanted eloquently at the service and the harmonious voices of the youth choir singing the hymns of our faith were angelic. The Challenge Liturgy on the Saturday of Lazarus celebrated with His Eminence was a special day shared by all!

Our annual Sunday before Mother’s Day fundraiser was a grand success! The hand-designed and decorated plant pots by our choir members were a big hit! It was a wonderful entrepre-neurial learning experience in which we enjoyed working to-gether in cooperation and love. All the proceeds of our efforts were submitted to the Church office and will be used to sup-port youth choir activities.

We would like to welcome new member Catherine Couluris to our Byzantine Youth Choir Sisterhood! With the numerous activities in which our children are involved, we are always delighted when a decision to join youth choir is made. We are sincerely grateful to the parents who instill the value of being a part of choir.

May His Memory Be Eternal! The spiritually uplifting beautiful baritone voice of Andy Cyprus reciting our Communion Prayer on Sundays at Divine Liturgy will forever be remembered! He holds a special place in all our hearts. Andy touched so many lives with his kindness and we feel truly blessed to have known him. We want to extend our deepest sympathy to his loving wife Evangelia, their sons Perry and Niko and the entire family. Our dear Andy is smiling upon us, for he is with God and his precious daughter Irene in paradise.

Wishing everyone a DIVINE summer!

The Greek Dance Troupe of the Archangel Michael Church had a wonderful year!

The highlights of our year included dancing at the Challenge Liturgy Christmas Party and performing in our end of the year recital at the Community Barbecue.

The Greek Dance Troupe was established in 1999 under the direction of Roula Zogopoulos. Our Troupe’s intention is to of-fer children an opportunity to come together and maintain and continue our Hellenic traditions. Mrs. Zogopoulos creates a safe atmosphere in which our young people are inspired, learning about their Hellenic heritage through our rich dancing and musical traditions. Children who join our Dance Troupe possess a high level of commitment and drive.

The Troupe meets on Saturdays throughout the school year and welcomes children from Kindergarten through 12th grade. De-tails regarding registration will be available in the next issue of the Trumpet. For more information please contact: [email protected]

GOYAAs we approach summer vacation, we are grateful to reflect on a fun and rewarding year of faith, service and fellowship for our Archangel Michael Church GOYA. We held two fundraisers: the first was our Annual Pancake Breakfast in October, and the second was during Great Lent, when we launched our first Luminary Can-dles Sale. Both were successful because of everyone’s efforts and generosity. THANK YOU! Donations were made to the Ronald McDonald House, St. Demetrios Church Fire Fund, Toys for Tots and Pins for Pauly. We held a Food Drive and stocked the food pantry of St. Peter’s Church in Port Washington. We also hosted an Internet Safety Presentation for the Community, and prepared a Pot-Luck Lenten Dinner following the final Pre-Sanctified Liturgy.

GOYAns were able to make new friends and reconnect with old ones at some fun social events, including a Bowling Night, Christmas Tree Decorating, Game Day, Gym Nights, Cabin Fe-ver Gathering, Ski Trip and Scavenger Hunt in NYC. GOYAns also attended a variety of seasonal dances hosted by other Nassau and Suffolk County church communities and we had the opportunity to host the InterGOYA Christmas Dance in our Fellowship Hall. We ended the year with a party on the tram-poline courts at Bounce in Syosset. The GOYAns had a BLAST!!

We look forward to resuming in September, so please look out for Evites and emails from [email protected]! Wishing everyone a great and safe summer!

HOPE/JOYWe had a great year filled with many memorable events, retreats and outings. We wish everyone a great summer and look forward to seeing everyone again in September. Emails with important information will be sent regarding registration for the 2014-2015 year.

JOY BASKETBALLDear Parishioners, Coaches, Parents & Players:

What a season we have had!Our AMC JOY program this year had an unprecedented 11 teams coached by 26 coaches and was made up of an amazing 150 players. Our AMC gym was used for the first time, and our JOY players practised Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, with numerous scrimmages held on Saturday afternoons after the Instructional Basketball sessions.

Speaking of the Instructional Basketball, we have over 60 enrolled students, taught by 6 tireless parishioner assistant coaches and a head coach who inspires everyone, whether young or old, to hone their basketball skills.

It seemed like every Saturday we were hosting at least 6 home games at AMC. At any given home game, the bleachers were packed with parishioners who often stayed for more than a few games. Our concession stand was operated by the tireless, dedicated and ever loyal “JOY mothers”.

Under the skillful guidance of our coaches, most of our teams made it to the playoffs and we were the only community to have two teams in championship games. Our teams made us extremely proud by bringing home to AMC trophies that will be on display for many generations to see and will always be reminders of our accomplishments this year.

Coaches, players, and parents bonded, either by the delight of victory or the disappointment of defeat. Win or lose, our teams always exhibited good sportsmanship.

What a season! And next year is shaping up to be even bigger and better; with an anticipated 200 players and 15 teams, we will be the biggest JOY Basketball Community in New York.

Thank you coaches for your endless and tireless efforts; for imparting your knowledge to our young players who are ever eager to learn; for your dedication to the program; for your loyalty to our community; for the hours spent away from your homes and families to oversee practices and coach games whether locally or miles away; and for all your efforts for the AMC JOY Basketball Program this year!

Thank you parents for supporting the AMC JOY Basketball Pro-gram by enrolling your children, for enduring weekly revolving practice schedules, for enduring last minute schedule releas-es/revisions, and for supporting us each and every time we asked and in any way we requested. Last but not least, thank you players for all of your efforts. You make us extremely proud, and we hope that regardless of the results of any given game or the season in general, you have developed friendships that will keep you connected to each other and to AMC for decades to come.

Thank you for making this season the most memorable AMC JOY Basketball season ever!

News & Events

Spring is a very active season for the Challenge Liturgy Group. It heralds two much anticipated events: a visit to our parish by Archbishop Demetrios and our annual Spring Picnic. Many thanks to the volunteers who donated food, money and/or their time to make both events such memorable occasions.

On April 12th, the Saturday of Lazarus, we were honored, once again, by the visit of Archbishop Demetrios. His Eminence cel-ebrated the Divine Liturgy and offered Holy Communion to all in attendance. At the social hour following the Liturgy, the Arch-bishop led the group in singing and wishing a Happy Birthday and a Happy Nameday to our members who celebrated in April.

Our Spring Picnic was held on Saturday, May 17th, immedi-ately following the Challenge Liturgy. The north parking area was transformed into festive picnic grounds with tents cover-ing the cooking, serving and eating areas. Everyone in atten-dance, including our group members and parishioners, were treated to a wonderful afternoon of abundant food and drink. There was great camaraderie under a glorious, sunny sky.

Thank you to all who volunteered their time and worked so hard to make the following events successful!

Greek Night Out, held this year on April 25th at Vivaldi Ris-torante, has become a popular tradition enjoyed by parishio-ners, families and friends!

The last in our series of Fellowship Nights for the 2013-14 Ecclesiastical year was held on May 3rd. After partaking in a delicious meal from North Shore Farms, with the pastitsio re-ceiving rave reviews, the youngest children were treated to a DVD in the library, the older children had Olympic practice and free play in the gym, and the adults watched an excellent DVD presentation followed by a lively discussion with Fr. Dennis.

The concert on May 10th featuring Betty Harlafti was enjoyed by all who attended. A portion of the proceeds of this very suc-cessful AMC fundraising event was donated to Saint Michael’s Home for the Aged.
