Software TopicsWhat is GeneMapper® ID-X Software?
• Two parts:
• Oracle® Database
• Graphic User Interface (GUI)
• GUI exists on Full install and
Client
• Database only on Full install
• Communication between GUI
and Database occurs via TCP/IP
(internet protocol)
• Connection dictated by the rules
of Oracle ® Database (Oracle ®
Services)

TCP/IP (The Internet Protocol) - A Short Lesson
The GUI you use communicates with Oracle® software via a protocol called TCP/IP
Same protocol used when you use the internet
Why do we care? Your computer uses TCP/IP to connect to the internet our your lab network, but GeneMapper® ID-X Software uses TCP/IP to connect the GUI to the Oracle® database
Weak internet connections are acceptable for surfing the web, but cause a disconnection with Oracle® Database

Clarification of Terms – Can I use a Server?
.
In computing, the term server is used to refer to one of the following:
•a physical computer
•Generally acceptable
•a System Operating Software
•Must use validated OS

64 bit vs 32 bit
Review install requirements before selecting computers
Some newer computers default with 64 bit
64 bit operating systems would not see performance increases with data analysis software
May use a 64 bit computer, but not 64 bit Operating System
GeneMapper® ID-X Software uses 32 bit operating systems

Installation Recommendations
GeneMapper® ID-X Software v1.4 User Bulletin contains more details that applies to all versions

Install - Local Computer vs. Network login
Have Administrator rights to your computer in the system
− ora_dba
Log into the Domain that matched the computer name.

Customer Requests – Modifying Oracle® Software
Customer Requests
− Running command line operations or third party software to access Oracle® to perform functions like data mining or printing that bypass the IDX software.
− Updating Oracle® database based on various patches that Oracle® Software (not AB) has released.
Not allowed by the EULA (Oracle® License)
− “Licensee is not permitted to modify the Oracle® Programs, and Licensee may not require Oracle Corporation to perform any obligations not previously agreed to between Applied Biosystems and Oracle Corporation.”

Database

Client vs. Full (Server)Useful for Troubleshooting!
Full install = Oracle® Database AND a Client
Client = Client only, no database
2/8/2013 | 13
Failure Modes – No client connection
If the problem is Lab Network, then Lab IT will be needed to assist slow network performance
If the problem is with the Oracle® Database, could be due to excessive audit records or too much used space

Full install functions normally but Client connection

Full install functions slow/fail and Client is slow/fails

Database Dashboard - Password
To access:
Select Start > All programs > Applied Biosystems > Database Dashboard > Dashboard
Click Yes when asked to if you want to set a password
− Cannot recover this password if you lose it!

Communication Occurs on Port 1521
.
•In computer networking, a port is an application-specific or
process-specific software construct serving as a
communications endpoint.
•GeneMapper® ID-X Software uses port 1521
•Allow this port in network firewalls or virus software
2/8/2013 | 17
Avoiding Database Connection Drops
Rules set by Oracle®, not GeneMapper® ID-X Software specifically
Use hardwired (not wireless) networks, wireless laptops are risky
Make sure network are reliable
Do not pull out the network cable while in use
Third party applications that affect TCP/IP stability are a risk− Single Sign On (SSO)
− Virus Scanning software
− VPN

Audit Records
Check them often (depending on usage)
Audit records build even with default install
Audit records multiply if you import projects (.ser files)
Clean them out before they reach about 40,000
Export working projects before deleting audit records

Step by Step Summary of Process
What were you trying to do when there was a problem?
Did anything pop up on the screen?
− Error messages
Any updates to your computer recently?
− Java updates
Any differences from our recommended run environment?
Random Java Error from
non-validated install
Improper Virtual Memory

Useful Files and Information – Log Files
.
•GeneMapper_Log.txt
•Records user actions
•GMIDXInstall.log
•Install information
•Depends on version
, GMIDX_MSI.log
•Install information

Useful Files and Information – Log Files
.
Communication Errors
listener.log
•may be slightly different location depending on
versions of software
•Monitors communication between the GUI and
Oracle®

Report – Dashboard and System Info
Contains the Oracle® Dashboard Report
Reports can be saved or exported and sent in to technical support if there are Oracle® database issues
