A Ramadan Message fromour Managing DirectorThis Ramadan, I would like to take the opportunity to focus on the celebrations and enlightenment to come. Ramadan is a time of year that’s much more than the abstention of food and drink, it is a time to purify the soul, refocus attention on God, and practice self-discipline and self-sacrifice.

In doing this we remember and pay tribute to all those less fortunate than ourselves, and in The Year of Zayed – pay attention to the teachings of our Founding Father, Sheikh Zayed. It’s my hope that this renewed focus will help us all have a productive month as we seek further enlightenment, and take this opportunity to reflect, learn and grow as professionals and as individuals.

I sincerely hope that you all have a blessed Ramadan and make the most of this time of reflection.

Tips to Keep youHealthy this Ramadan

During the holy month of Ramadan, it is important to maintain your energy levels and to avoid the unhealthy food temptations that come with the month. Make sure to follow these tips to

ensure you have a prosperous Ramadan and avoid any unnecessary health problems.

Just remember, whatever you decide to eat, a balanced food plan containing healthy ingredients, cooked right will help you enjoy iftar and suhoor while giving you good health and more energy!

• Break your fast the healthy way: start with 2 dates and a glass of water or yogurt. Dates are a great way to break your fast as they provide natural sugars for energy, minerals including potassium, copper and manganese and are a source of fibre. Wait for a few minutes and then start with a bowl of soup followed with a salad and a healthy main dish. The meal should consist of a good mix of fibre, protein, healthy fats and complex carbohydrates. Fibre and good fats keep you feeling satiated and have a slow sustained release of energy. An example of a healthy iftar includes: a bowl of lentil soup, fattoush and mulukhiya with brown rice.

• Make sure you drink at least 8 glasses of water to prevent constipation and dehydration.

• Moderation is the key: who said you can’t enjoy some Ramadan sweets after iftar? When it comes to eating sweets, make sure you control the size of your portions in order to prevent any weight gain during the holy month.

• Whenever possible, aim for light exercise of at least 30 minutes per day: light exercise before or after iftar will get you moving and will prevent you from gaining weight.

• What to avoid: salty foods, carbonated beverages, high sugar foods, fried foods, and too much caffeine.

• Sleep for 6 to 8 hours per day to get sufficient physical and mental rest. Less sleep means you will feel more tired throughout the day.

• Never skip Suhoor! Choose foods that can sustain you through the fast. Eat complex carbohydrates, such as fruits and vegetables, beans, lentils which will provide you with a long lasting source of energy throughout the day. Include low-fat dairy products, such as low fat labneh or yoghurt, and incorporate healthy fats like unsalted walnuts, olive oil, and avocado whenever possible.

Interview with Horizon Towers PM: Engr. Eissa Awad Alla

1. What would you say is the most important skill for a Project Manager and why?As a project manager the key skills you’ve got to have include, managing the budget and monitoring the overall progress of the project. More than this however, it’s really important to be able to lead the team, while communicating with the engineer and client, and raising all notifications and claims on time and to follow up with subcontractors to avoid any delays.

2. How was the Horizon Towers project different from any other project? The Horizon Towers project was distinctly unique; given that the project itself is relatively old there was a great deal of variance between the site condition and the new drawings, making it difficult to keep the project in line with evolving regulations.

3. Were there any challenges faced and how did you overcome them?Due to the age of the project, one issue we faced was getting the materials for the project to comply with previous approvals.

4. Explain your methods for resource allocation.Resources were allocated based on the type of activity being done, and as per the scope of operation of the subcontractor.

5. Did you inform all the stakeholders on the progress of Horizon Towers regularly? It’s really important to keep all stakeholders up-to-date with the progress of any project; for the Horizon Towers development, we held weekly and monthly meetings.

6. How did you help the team prioritize competing or equally urgent tasks? We divided the tasks and jobs for all the teams separately, and made sure to monitor whether they were able to achieve their targets; if not, we would support them and do our best to help where possible, even supporting them with personal matters if needed.

7. There are lots of project management tools available - which, if any, did you use for Horizon Towers and why? We meticulously carried out daily and weekly reports, and regular internal meetings to check on the teams and to assess their targets; this process would also help us solve any problems with H.O for procurement, materials or payment releases etc.

CISA Accreditation for Ajay KumarWe would like to extend our warmest congratulations to Ajay Kumar, Sr. IT Engineer at Reem Emirates Aluminum, for recently achieving CISA (Certified Information Systems Auditor) accreditation. Branding Guidelines: Trojan Holding The aim of this short branding guideline is to assist in the implementation of the visual identity of Trojan Holding and to ensure consistency in the delivery of all communication material for both traditional and new media. These two pages provide detailed guidelines on how to treat the brand correctly on all communication materials.

The brand markThe brand mark formation was inspired by the images shown. The basic shape of the logo (triangle) was taken from the previous symbol (horse head). The triangle is one of the basic

shapes in geometry, it is a very stable shape and also symbolises growth. Another element used is the arrow from the growth chart moving upward. In essence, the concept of the iconrepresents growth inside a stable structure.

Interview with Al Maha Project Manager: Erkal Albayrak | Al Maha

1. When every task is urgent, how do you determine what to prioritize?First, we group the tasks which require the same resource. This gives us the macro view of which set of tasks can run in parallel and which have to be tackled one by one. Subsequently, we assort the tasks by duration and give priority to the shorter ones. When the duration is longer, you have more chance and allowance to manipulate the components to expedite; but for projects of a shorter duration, this isn’t possible and the risk is higher. After the master list is ready, we check the milestones, relation of the tasks with the critical path and special conditions if there are any to make the final adjustment.

2. What do you spend the most time working on each day?I can say that I spend most of my time with follow-ups for our projects, from procurement to site operations. This is followed by meetings with clients, contractors and subcontractors.

3. Do you prefer working on a single project or multiple projects at the same time?A single project is made up of many tasks: budgets need to be controlled, staff need managed, clients need satisfied and problems need solved. Therefore, running multiple projects needs multiple teams with leaders who share the same approach and principles with you as Project Manager. Your dependence on your subordinates increases as well as your expectations from them to use their initiative. Today’s technology, including the vast amount of tools, ease of access to information and endless communication possibilities removes the physical restraints, and lets us be mobile and be reached anywhere, anytime.

Considering all this, I would prefer running multiple projects, as long as we can constitute all the required components I mentioned to make it a success.

4. Give a few examples where you made a proactive decision in past or current projects.I will generalize my answer as below:• In a couple of projects, due to the

special design of the steel structure, I requested mock-up fabrications of some specific items to see their applicability. In some cases, we found out that the design was not suitable when we reached the site so we revised it before the problem got out of hand.

• For a previous project, I found out in advance that we wouldn't be able to finish our tasks in time. I asked for a meeting with our client, explained the reasons and the situation. I was able to get an extension of time without any penalties.

• In a project consisting in multiple light gauge frame structures, we found out that the MEP coordination was not completed properly before the approval drawings. This was going to have a major impact on cost and time. Instead of being silent, we requested a meeting with all relevant parties to coordinate our solution. After a number of successful meetings, we made the necessary revisions and additions. After the steel erection was complete, the MEP installation went ahead and incurred no clash penalties on site.

5. What are some of the tools and resources you have used to develop your team?Development comes from a collective approach. The decision on what requirements and inputs are needed should come from the team members themselves. I, as a leader suggest the requirements and diagnoses that we need to achieve, and as a team discuss what is required to achieve that. In summary, each individual is responsible for deciding on the required tools and resources needed to develop the team. You can say, my role is to motivate and let people decide for themselves how best to develop the team.
