    price hikes by suppliers, the backpack we aretaking on the uphill climb is getting heavierand heavier. Not least because of our mosttreasured resource – crude oil. In the last sixmonths, the price of diesel increased by 15percent. The tense price situation in the in-dustry does not make the climb to the topany easier either. What this means is easy tograsp: the gap between profit and loss is get-ting wider and wider. Thanks to our staff whoare receptive to innovation and our loyal cus-tomers, as well as the solid foundation we

    have built together, we face up to these glo-bal developments with a great deal of confi-dence. We will continue to do our homeworktogether with our team. Initiative, a wealthof ideas and confidence is what is needed.The value of the family remains unshakeable,also and especially in times like these. It isan island and a place of refuge – which givesus all energy. With this in mind, we wouldlike to wish all of our employees, customersand suppliers a happy holiday season and aprosperous new year.

    08 IN PICTURESIn Altenmarkt an der Alz, Germany, em-ployees of Felbermayr’s Salzburg branchare currently constructing a hydroelectricpower station with a total output of 0.8Megawatts. Felbermayr’s Demolition divi-sion began work by clearing the con-struction site. Around 16,500 cubicmetres of earth was removed for the ex-cavation. Felbermayr’s Specialised CivilEngineering division also set up a shieldof gunned concrete over an area ofaround 800 square metres. Until the plantis opened in May 2011, 3,400 cubic me-tres of concrete and 280 tonnes of rein-forcement will be constructed.

    SEASONAL BUSINESSAT WORK WITH THE VIENNA CHRISTMAS TREE

    It took a little over one hour to erect the Vienna Christmas tree in front of Vienna Town Hall.But transporting the 28 metre pine took considerably more time. The pine originated in Afieslim Mühlviertel in Austria and was felled at the end of October using a Felbermayr mobilecrane before being transported to Vienna after being officially waved goodbye by the provincialgovernor of Upper Austria, Josef Pühringer. The pine tree, weighing 6,100 kilos, was carefullysecured for the 300 or so kilometre journey on a 2-fold telescopic low-loader. As the lightscame on for the first time on 13th November with the illumination ceremony, even Felbermayrstaff were touched by the spiritual meaning of this special job.

    COVER STORYCrane at work in Romania

    In the middle of September, an LR1750 crawler crane with a total deadweight of 904 tonnes set sail from Fel-bermayr’s heavy load port in Linz. Thedestination for the voyage, which las-ted around ten days, was a refinery inRomania. Together with an LTM 1500mobile crane, it was intended to re-place a reactor at the Petromidia refi-nery. Felbermayr was also in charge ofthe transport of the new and old re-actor, weighing around 220 tonnes, toand from the site.

    SPECIALISED CIVIL ENGINEERINGRock stabilisation work in Northern Bavaria

    Caused by erosion and weathering, therisk of rockfall on the autobahn bet-ween Bamberg and Bayreuth has in-creased considerably in recent years.In order to minimise the risk for roadusers, rock stabilisation works werecarried out last summer by the Felbermayr Specialised Civil Enginee-ring division. First, the rocks and treeshad to be cleared away and a disusedsafety fence had to be removed. Then,a net was tightened and fixed with an-chors over the porous limestone wall.After around eight weeks’ work, therock stabilisation work on the busy A70was completed.

    10 YEARSBEST LOGISTICS CELEBRATES ITS BIRTHDAY

    When Andreas Häfner formed Best Logistics GmbH in 2000, this was a logical progressionof the sector, integrated into Haeger & Schmidt GmbH, for special and heavy transports mostlypassing through Poland. Today, ten years later, the company, which has offices in Berlin andStettin, Poland, is an indispensable interface between Poland and Western Europe. It conti-nues to serve its customers as a logistics firm operating by rail, road and sea. Partners includeFelbermayr GmbH and the maritime freight company Haeger & Schmidt, based in Duisburg,Germany. According to Häfner the secret of the company’s success is in a large part due toits knowledge of local factors. In his opinion, it is not enough simply to translate mere words –the mentality of the local people must also be considered. Incidentally, Best Logistics ended2009 with decent results and has also set ambitious targets for the next ten years.

    SARENOUpgraded insulation of passive house quality

    Since April, Felbermayr subsidiary Sareno has been at work providing upgraded insulation for the Kalvarienberg residential development in Wels. At around10,000 square metres, with twenty centimetres of EPS-F panels, the surface area nee-ding insulation is bigger than a football pitch. The 5,120 square metres of upgraded insu-lation for construction phase I was already completed in October. Three parties wereinitially involved in the insulation in construction phase II. The reasoning behind it was totry and complete as much of the remaining 4,250 square metres as possible before thefirst frost, because the material could not be processed at too low a temperature. TheFelbermayr subsidiary, founded more than 22 years ago with its headquarters in Ulrichs-berg, Austria, is the market leader, annually producing 200,000 square metres of thermalinsulation material. The Sareno subsidiary Technodec specialises in the production offaçade profiles.

    UNDER A LUCKY STARTRANSPORT AND LIFT-ING TECHNOLOGY FORTHE MERCEDES PLANT

    With around sixty work platforms and ninecranes, the Felbermayr subsidiary BauTransis responsible for the erection of a newMercedes plant in Kecskemet, Hungary.Carrying out over a hundred transports,drivers from Budapest made an importantcontribution to the delivery of technical con-struction materials. The work began in Aprilof this year.

  • When I was asked by MCE todraw up the business plan forwhat is now BIS Gerätetech-nik in 1995, I would not have thought itpossible that the company could have rea-ched such magnitude«, saysGerhard Hunger, surroun-ded by around a thousandcustomers, suppliers andfriends of the company.They all came to get a tho-rough understanding ofwhat the company can do.Today, together with Christian Nimmervolland 125 employees, he manages a rentalstation with around 15,000 items of equip-ment. As well as the 25,000 square metreheadquarters in Wels, there are also ser-vice and sales offices in Vienna, Salzburgand Bochum.

    Renting, not buying

    »Our customers think economically, saveon investment and demand safety on thebuilding site by choosing our SCC-compli-ant and inspected equipment«, explainsNimmervoll, listing reasons for why

    people rent. The system allows machinesto be used which would not be viablewhen used sporadically, or whose main-tenance costs are too expensive for asmall fleet. »The system works, which is

    why the number of custo-mers is continuously on theup«, adds Hunger. What weoffer ranges from transportsystems to electrical sup-plies for building sites,through to special con-struction vehicles. They cur-

    rently have 700 vehicles, and »we expectthis to increase to around a thousand«,says Hunger optimistically. With 3,000welding units, the company is also stron-gly represented in the sealing technologysector. Around 1,500 containers are alsoavailable. Nimmervoll continues: »They canbe configured for our customers as dormi-tories, kitchens or office containers as re-quired«. This innovative company has beenworking together with Felbermayr in thecrane and heavy load sectors right fromthe beginning. »We quickly discoveredthat renting this heavy load equipmentwas too costly for us, and therefore not

    expedient«, says Hunger and is pleased tohave found a strong partner in the form ofFelbermayr Transport and Lifting Techno-logy. Hunger also sees high growth poten-tial through the takeover of the parentcompany MCE by the BIS Group. Thiscompany, with 27,000 employees world-wide who specialise in the process andenergy industries, offers large potential forthe rental business, he believes. »Wewant to remain what we were before forMEC, as for Bilfinger Berger«, he adds,setting the bar high. But optimism is in noway misplaced, given the convincing argu-ments for renting equipment.

    fair for techno freaks in Wels in mid-September. Some celebrities were also among the customers, suppliers and

    partners. They all came to the event, found out about the rental services on offer, enjoyed the food or released

    some excess adrenaline by bungee jumping from 65 metres up.

    Airbornedemolition

    They say that challenges only make you stronger. An

    excavator from the Felbermayr Demolition divi-

    sion took to the skies at the end of August to

    demolish a 52-metre high chimney. The

    place of action was the premises of

    the Vereinigte Fettwarenindustrie

    in Wels, Austria.

  • The chimney at VFI in Wels is ahundred years old. Until now ithas been needed to heat the ma-chine halls. Now that the premises havebeen fitted with a gas supply, the antici-pated transition from crude oil to naturalgas is able to take place. According tocompany management, this will makeproduction with far lower emissions pos-sible. The chimney, visible from milesaround, had to give way. But how? Deto-nation was not possible due to the spaceconstraints. The company also didn’t wantto bother its neighbours with the resul-ting dust pollutants.

    Adventurous solution

    The Felbermayr team found a solutionusing a seemingly adventurous method:»We thought about lifting the excavatorwhile suspended from a crane hook, andthen demolishing the chimney from the topdown,« said site manager Bernhard Radleras he talked about the procedure, whichwas later carried out using a modified liftingplateau. However, before this, they had toconvince the TÜV about the unorthodoxprocedure between sky and earth. Nomean feat if you remember how the mainaim of this organisation is to promote tech-nical safety! »Our TÜV contact was very co-operative,« remarks Radler about theco-operation, which did have a positive out-come. It was even possible to agree on apractical solution taking all the safety-rele-vant issues into account.

    Suction excavator on hand

    However, before the demolition work couldbe started, the inside of the chimney hadto be cleared of soot. »This was necessaryin order to prevent the demolition materialfrom mixing with contaminated substan-ces. Otherwise, the debris could not havebeen recycled,« reports Radler. To extractthis material, the suction excavator fromthe Felbermayr Waste Management divi-sion was used. With an operating pressureof up to eight bars, the excavator extractedthe soot from the inside wall of the over 100-year old chimney in just a few hours.Using this method, around twenty cubic

    metres of contaminated material was re-moved, which was later analysed and dis-posed of correctly.

    Safety first

    The employees also played it safe whenprotecting the surrounding properties. Theirroofs were reinforced with beams and cei-ling supports and covered with layers ofbuilding fleece and bales of straw to shieldagainst splinters. After these measureswere approved by the construction co-ordi-nator, the actual demolition work couldbegin with mobile cranes and excavators.»If the excavator operator had not turnedup, I would have had to get in myself,« saysthe foreman with a trace of humour as heconcentrates on observing the lifting of theexcavator. Suspended from the hook andfixed to the chimney with two I-supports,the excavator operator began the demoli-tion work. An employee remarked how it isnormally safer up than down during demo-litions. But everyone was sure of one thing:this was no normal job and the operatorhad everyone’s utmost respect. By late af-ternoon, the chimney had been demolishedto a height of eight metres, and the exca-vator had been let down from its missionabove the rooftops of Wels. The remains ofthe chimney were removed from theground up with demolition equipment.»Even if it is not as safe, I prefer it,« saysthe excavator operator, smiling to himself,pleased to have his feet firmly on solidground again.

    The resulting soot was removed by Felbermayr’s Waste Management divi-sion using a suction excavator. This wasnecessary to ensure that the resultingdebris could be recycled properly.

    When fully operational, the Mel-lach power station has the per-formance and generationcapacity of around four and a half large Da-nube power plants, according to its opera-tor, the VERBUND-Austrian Thermal PowerGmbH & Co KG. Its technical feasibility isassured with two sets of machines. Eachof these sets has a gas and steam turbinewhich drives a generator to produce elect-ricity. The voltage conversion – before theelectricity is supplied to the mains network– takes place using transformers. »Theseare the same main components which wetransported«, says Günter Kaspar from theFelbermayr Transport division in Wels. Thegas turbines were manufactured at the Sie-

    mens plant in Berlin before being transpor-ted by boat to Linz via the Rhine-Main-Da-nube canal. »In Linz, we received them inour heavy load port and placed them in sto-rage until we got the call from Siemens«,explains Kaspar. The steam turbines werealso delivered by boat and were stored inthe machine hall. Unlike the others, thesewere manufactured by Siemens at its sitein Mühlheim an der Ruhr, which is wherethey were transported from. The turbineshad to be placed into storage in the hallsdue to the sensitivity of their high-techcomponents. The components, weighingseveral hundreds of tonnes, had to be dis-mantled before being transported by roadfrom Linz to Mellach, situated around thirty kilometres south of Graz. »Just the rotors

    on the turbines boasted impressive dimen-sions – weighing around 106 tonnes andmeasuring 4.4 metres in diameter«, reportsKaspar; due to the traffic conditions, therewas no other choice but to drive throughGraz. With a transport length of 39 metresand a height of 4.5 metres, the limits ofwhat was possible were quickly reached.»The narrow curves tested the transporterdrivers and support staff to the max«.

    Steel colossus on the road

    With a weight of around 342 tonnes the ge-nerator was the biggest thing destined forMellach. Like the gas turbines, it is alsomade by Siemens engineers in Mühlheiman der Ruhr and was transported fromthere to Felbermayr’s heavy load port inLinz. Here the generator was placed on aspecial 32-axle low-loader belonging to theFelbermayr ITB division and transported byrail to Werndorf. The heavy load was putonto a road vehicle for the remaining eightkilometres to the power station. The aroundeleven-metre long and four-metre high ge-nerator made up the second block. Along-side its identical twin, in future it willconvert the mechanical energy generatedby the gas and steam turbine into electricalenergy. Two transformers will ensure thegenerated electricity is as required.

    Logistic concept for »Mellach«Felbermayr provided a textbook example of trimodal transportation for the Mellach gas and steam power plant

    in Styria, Austria. All of the important components of the power plant were transported within six months by

    rail, road and sea. The mega transport was completed mid-November with the laying of the foundation of a

    292-tonne transformer.

    The Mellach gas and steam power plantwill enter service with an installed outputof 832 megawatts of electricity and up to400 megawatts of district heating at the endof 2011.

    Four mobile cranes were deployed at the same time for relocating the two condensers. Thiswas necessary in order to be able to rotate the components 90 degrees upright, each weighing88 tonnes, before being placed onto the self-propelled modular transporter.

  • Weighing in at 265 and 292 tonnes, theybelong to the heavyweights of power sta-tion components. Nevertheless, the factthat they were manufactured in Weiz in Sty-ria made transporting them a breeze. Fromhere, they were transported to Werndorf byrail and then by road to the power station.

    Manual work

    The two condensers and transformer ne-cessitated a complicated installation. Thecondenser, which was transported intwo halves from Poland, were assembledonsite by Felbermayr’s Installation division.»We placed the two halves, each weighing84 tonnes, onto a rail system beforehand«,explains Franz Brunbauer, who, togetherwith his team, is responsible for laying thefoundation. Installation of the two eleven-metre long transformers was more difficult.The heavier of the two involved the mostwork. Eleven lorries were needed, just totransport the necessary materials. »Theequipment, including lifting gear, rail sys-tem and base plates, weighed more than120 tonnes«, says Brunbauer. Assemblybegan by lowering the equipment onto a ro-tary table. Afterwards, the transformer wasrotated 180 degrees to reach the correctposition for assembly before being raisedby the lifting system and placed on the rails;the suspended load was moved to thefoundation some forty metres away. Afterit got there, the transformer was loweredin an operation lasting several hours.

    Other loads to transport

    As well as these mega-weights, around5,000 tonnes of cargo from China and In-donesia found their way to the Austrianshow plant in Mellach. »Before they hit theroad, they travelled by ship to the Slovenianport of Koper«, explains Kaspar. Here thecomponents, weighing up to 180 tonnes,

    were placed in temporary storage. Theywere then transported to the power stationwhen called for. In part, several transpor-ters were on the road at the same time. Ac-cording to the plant operators, theassembly should be completed before theend of 2011 and the plant will then be com-missioned which will set down a marker forhighly-efficient power generation.

    Around 5,000 tonnes were shipped toKoper, Slovenia, and Slavonski Brod, Croatia. From here, these 140- to 180-tonne components were transported tothe power station on low-loaders.

    Installing the components weighing hundreds of tonnes required instinct and the highest levels of concentration.

    1,000 and 1 lift for Austria’smost modern cablewayFrom December 2010, ski lovers everywhere can rejoice in the opening of the new Gaislachkogel cable car in Söl-

    den, Austria. With the help of Felbermayr lifting technology, the most modern cableway in Austria was erected

    here after around six months of construction.

    This year, a crane operator and hisLTM 1200 got a real taste of sum-mer breeze at the summit station ofthe Gaislachkogel cable car in Sölden. Thepurpose of this work at 3,050 metres abovesea level was to construct the new summitstation. Similar to how the new Gaislachko-gel cable car as a whole is seen as one ofthe most modern in Europe, this summitstation is considered an architectural mas-terpiece. »We needed to lift 125 tonnes ofsteel for this«, says Johann Lettenbichler,Felbermayr’s branch manager. The externalshell of the station comprises transparentfoil, just like the Allianz Arena. In the mean-time, a 120-tonner mounted the inlet strutonto the summit station. 220 tonnes of pro-cessed steel makes this the heaviest strutin Europe. The length of the main jib was

    not sufficient for strut »number two«, whichhad been installed earlier. »Therefore, wehad to use an additional fly jib with a lengthof 9 metres in addition to the 60-metre longtelescopic jib«, explains Lettenbichler. FromApril to September, the lifting devices rea-ched out into the blue sky from the 2,174metre high intermediate station. Here, ac-cording to Lettenbichler, three cranes werein use at the same time: »One of them as-sembled strut »number one« of the cablecar which leads to the summit station andthe hall. Two additional cranes with a maxi-mum bearing load of 200 tonnes mountedthe inlet strut for the circular cableway ori-ginating from the valley and the cablewaysystem for the train tracks«. Telescopic for-klift trucks and platforms were also used fora range of installation tasks.

    A thousand strokes

    Felbermayr lifting technology was alsoat work at the valley station. The steelskeleton for the gondola train stationand various other constructions to im-prove passenger comfort were erectedhere. Incidentally, the work at the val-ley station also marked the end of Fel-bermayr’s activities here. »Withinaround six months of constructiontime, we implemented around a thou-sand strokes«, says Lettenbichler. As aborn and bred Tyrol boy, he is delightedto have made a contribution to the newGaislachkogel cable car along with hisstaff: »There are going to be manytimes when I will happily swap my hardhat for a ski helmet«.

    The mobile crane reached the 3,040 metrehigh summit station of the Gaislachkogelcable car along an access road aroundtwelve kilometres in length. It neededaround 2.5 to cover this distance.

  • After work in the construction of»Soccer City« in Johannesburg forthe 2010 World Cup, Felbermayrhad already demonstrated its solution ex-pertise in 2004 with a lightning-quick mis-sion to complete the Olympic Stadium inAthens in time. In 2008, the sky-blue liftingmachines were back in action building anumber of stadiums in Austria for the Eu-ropean Championship. In 2012, anothermajor footballing event will be taking placein Poland and the Ukraine with the Euro-pean Championships.

    Felbermayr is involved in the construction

    of a new stadium in Wroclaw for this com-petition. Felbermayr cranes are being usedto lift the concrete elements, which weredelivered by rail. Towering above everythingelse on the building site is an LR 1750 Lieb-herr caterpillar crane – the biggest in the in-dustry. »Together with another crane, it islifting the concrete socket walers for thestage construction,« says Andrzej Ilowfrom the Felbermayr branch in Wroclaw.These 36-metre long and 110-tonne ele-ments form the skeleton for the stand con-struction. For further lifts with loads of upto 56 metres and weights of 65 tonnes, thecrane is equipped with 250 tonnes of basiccounterweight and also works with a pe-destal support as needed, supplementing

    the crawler mechanism. All in all, the LR1750 will be used from mid-August to theend of October and will finish countlesslifts. »The crane is in use twelve hours aday,« says Ilow, adding that working plat-forms and other cranes from the Wroclawbranch are also being used to build thesports venue.

    Completion as early as 2011

    The stadium should be completed as earlyas 2011 and will have 42,737 seats and30 VIP boxes. 5,000 car parking spaces and104 coach spaces are also provided to en-sure there is sufficient parking for the mul-titude of fans.

    At the beginning of August, a heavytransport, 48 metres in length, rol-led out from the technology centreand water turbine plant of the global groupAlstom in Grenoble, France, to the pumpstorage plant in Kaprun. Looking at the totalweight of 238 tonnes and height of 4.5 me-tres, one might not immediately think thatthe almost one thousand kilometre journeywould pass without a hitch. But there wereno noticeable issues to speak of, thanks toJosef Ammann from the Vorarlberg heavytransport firm BauTrans and his team. »Thisproject was in planning for almost twoyears«, he says. Numerous visits, route cla-rifications and calculations were made du-ring this time. Working very closely withexperts and the approval authorities, a routewas then established, starting from France,passing into Germany and down to Tyrol.

    Tour through the Kitzbühel

    The route also passed by the high-society

    ski resort at Kitzbühel. The transport spe-cialists reached their limits here. But notbecause of the range of food on offer, butthe numerous roundabouts which the col-lective 22-axle convoy had to thumb itsnose at. »But we were prepared for that«,says Ammann explaining the solution:»For this section of the route, we tempo-rarily removed five axle lines, using mobilecranes, which reduced the length of thetransporter and allowed it to navigate theroundabouts. However, this increased theremaining axial loads which needed bridgerecalculations and approvals.

    Twelve percent incline

    An even greater hurdle was to come andthe access road with an average incline oftwelve percent was particularly intracta-ble. However, by using two towing andone shunting machine with a combined1,700 hp, even a slope this steep could besurmounted. But after that came the next

    special test: The route to the power plantwas via a six kilometre long access tunneland, as this cannot be compared with amotorway by any means, the length of theconvoy again had to be reduced by remo-ving axle lines.

    Completed in two weeks

    After two weeks, the transport was com-pleted and the spherical valve could be in-stalled. This represented a significantcontribution to the completion of thepump storage plant in Kaprun. The trans-portation of the second spherical valvebegan in mid-September. Incidentally,thanks to the rapidly completed con-struction work, the Limberg power plantwill be finished a few months ahead ofschedule in the summer of next year, andthe word from the operator, VERBUND-Austrian Hydro Power AG, is that it willalso be operational a few months earlierthan planned.

    Hiking in KaprunA 140 tonne heavy load is nothing special for the transport and lifting technology specialists of the Felbermayr sub-

    sidiary BauTrans. But when this also involves climbing mountain passes up to 1,800 metres above sea level, even

    heavy load professionals take a road less travelled and things get interesting. This was the situation when trans-

    porting a spherical valve from the supplier Alstom Group to the power station in Kaprun.

    Around two years were needed to planthe transportation of the two sphericalvalves weighing 140 tonnes.
