so many of chances. We’ve been lucky to come out in front a few times. it’s a great spectacle.”

For boss, the win reinforced his decision to return to australia from singapore.

“There’s real fears coming back to sydney when you are trying to break back into what is probably the hardest market in the world,” he said.

“i wondered if i was making the right decision but it just felt right, it felt good for me, and when you are getting the support of Chris Waller, and riding his horses with light weights, that’s a big start.”

boss said he had race plans in his head but in the end he put his trust in his mount.

“You always have plans,” he said.“There is a, b and C, but it’s just about trusting the animal

for Queensland owner neville Morgan, who also enjoyed success with multiple group one-winning new Zealand-breds Kermadec (nZ) (Teofilo) and rangirangdoo (nZ) (Pentire), with the latter also an epsom winner.

Kolding was bred by Warren Pegg in partnership with Wentwood grange, who sold him at the 2017 Premier sale at Karaka for $170,000. Wentwood grange’s hawkins family also bred and sold Kermadec four years earlier.

“it’s a fantastic result, and that combination of guy Mulcaster buying our yearlings and neville Morgan racing them seems to be working extremely well,” stud manager

the well again after Kermadec, and we’re thrilled that they’ve got this result with this horse.

The Wentwood team are delighted to share the accolades with Pegg, who has been involved with the farm since the beginning.

“Warren was actually our very first client when Wentwood grange first got started,” hawkins said.

“a few years ago he decided to stop breeding horses on his own, so we started to breed in partnership with him.

“he’s been a wonderful client for such a long time and has become a close family friend. it’s fantastic to share this result with him.”

Kolding is out of Pegg’s danzero mare Magic star, who had previously produced two other stakes winners – the listed Counties 2Yo Challenge stakes (1100m) winner Miss Upstart (snipperson), and the well-performed stayer sampson (dubai destination), the winner of 11 races including the gr.2 awapuni gold Cup (2000m), gr.3 Trentham stakes (2100m) and listed new Zealand st leger (2600m).

a filly by iffraaj was sold by Wentwood grange for $150,000 during last year’s book 1 sale.

Meanwhile, the win was the biggest so far for Waikato stud’s up-and-coming stallion ocean Park, who had previously been represented by a further 14 stakes performers including rondinella, another dollar, Mongolianconqueror, arrogant and now star of The seas, who were all placed at group one level.

Five of Melody belle’s group one wins came during an all-conquering 2018-19 season, which earned her a near-unanimous vote of horse of the Year.

The Commands mare has begun the 2019-20 season in the same vein, easily defending her titles in the

of horse you dream about. it was life-changing when she won the Karaka Million (1200m) as a two-year-old. To win nine group 1 races on top of that is unbelievable.”

Te akau racing principal david ellis, who paid just $57,500 to buy Melody belle as a yearling at Karaka, was another proud observer.

“it’s the thrill of a lifetime,” he said. “To see her win the Karaka Million at two, then train on each year and get better and better, it’s just so rewarding. This is one of the great days i’ve had on a racetrack. it’s history. it’s a very proud occasion.”

While Melody belle’s connections will rightly celebrate saturday’s historic win, attention will soon shift to the mare’s next start, which will be in australia.

Melody belle is now rated an $11 chance for the gr.1 Cox Plate (2040m) in Melbourne on october 26, however

connections will be meeting on Monday afternoon to discuss whether the Moonee Valley feature is the right fit for the star mare, with galvin confirming that a number of group one races would be considered.

it was plain sailing from there as Melody belle swept past a brave Peso, opening up to win by three and a half lengths in front of a delighted hastings crowd.

“she’s such a darling,” bosson said. “We got bumped around a little bit in the first half of the race, but i ended up getting her out of trouble and then she just cruised into it. i just love her.

emotional members of the Fortuna Melody belle syndicate flooded into the winners’ circle after the race, watched by proud manager John galvin.

“before the race, i said that we were standing on the crest of history – now we’ve done it,” he said. “it’s an amazing feeling to have completed this very elusive Triple Crown.

The Melbourne Cup dream is alive for connections of Surprise Baby (NZ) (shocking), the $5,500 gavelhouse graduate who has stormed into favouritism after

booking his place in the race with victory in The gr.3 bart Cummings (2520m).

Trained by Paul Preusker at horsham in country Victoria, this year’s gr.2 adelaide Cup (3200m) winner was sent out the $2.50 favourite in saturday’s bart Cummings (2500m) and under jockey Jordan Childs he finished over the top of his rivals to win by 1-1/2-lengths.

The victory earned the lightly raced five-year-old a ballot exemption into the $8 million Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington on november 5 and the Tab reacted to the performance, halving the gelding’s Cup quote from $18 to $9 favourite.

Preusker had hoped surprise baby would gain the Cup

ballot exemption in The listed andrew ramsden (2800m) at Flemington in May but when he finished a close second to steel Prince (nathaniel), the trainer had to turn his attention to trying to qualify in The bart Cummings.

“it was just a super ride and he’s a super horse,” Preusker said.

“The ramsden sort of threw us a hurdle and we dealt with it.

“i think he’s the real deal.“he probably wasn’t really wound up for this today but he’s

a natural staying horse with a will to win.”surprise baby has now won five of his 10 starts and Preusker

is considering sending him into the Melbourne Cup without another run.

stayer still had work to do entering the home straight but made his run down the outside and charged to the lead at the 200m.

he defeated supernova (intello) with leader Wolfe (novellist) holding third, another three-quarters of a length away.

The victory brought up a winning double on the day for Childs.

“i’m just happy for Paul and the whole team up at horsham,” Childs said.

“They’ve done a fantastic job with these horses and for them to get a horse into the Melbourne Cup, it’s a massive thrill to be a part of it.”

surprise baby has provided a stunning return on investment for owners John Fiteni and Kathy stewart, who purchased the son of shocking for just $5,500 from online auction gavelhouse.com as an unraced three-year-old.

surprise baby was bred by rich hill stud, home to Melbourne Cup and australian Cup winner shocking, and the Walton farm also bred the most recent new Zealand bred winner of the Melbourne Cup, Prince of Penzance (nZ) (Pentire).

“surprise baby was a nice horse,” rich hill stud Managing director John Thompson said.

“i took him to the new Zealand bloodstock select sale and couldn’t sell him. i decided that he would make a ready To run horse and he just didn’t breeze up that well on the day.

“i still liked the horse, so i put him in work with Margaret Falconer with the idea of winning a trial and getting him sold.

“he proved a bit difficult and he never got to the trials early in his three-year-old season, so i thought we’d missed the boat.”

as a result, Thompson decided to list the untried galloper on gavelhouse.com, where he fetched $5,500 to the bid of John Fiteni.

“John bought the horse off gavelhouse pretty much sight unseen,” Thompson said. “he rang up and Paul Preusker came over to look at him after John had bought him.

“Paul said they were looking for a nice staying horse and i said to him that if he could get him to relax, he might make a

nice staying horse and that he would be more a four or five-year-old because he was just mentally a bit immature.

“To win an adelaide Cup at his sixth start and qualify for a Melbourne Cup at his tenth start is just a phenomenal training performance. he is one of the most exciting young stayers in australia.”

While Thompson was left lamenting the sale of the progressive stayer as well as his dam bula baby, the affable studmaster could see nothing but positives for his young sire shocking.

“his dam is a Kaapstad daughter of Miss Tessla, so she had a pedigree, but she hadn’t done a whole lot and i sold her on gavelhouse as well for $400 i think,” Thompson said.

“From a breeder’s perspective it’s not a great story but thank god i’ve still got shocking.”

Mark and lorraine Forbes’ Kiltannon stables will present a super easy half brother to surprise baby at the forthcoming nZb ready To run sale of 2Yos on 20-21 november.

brutal beat home of The brave (starspangledbanner) by a long neck with $2.25 favourite Classique legend (not a single doubt) another half length third after looming to win.

Co-trainer Michael hawkes said brutal’s campaign had been delayed by a head cold with the $7.5 million golden eagle on november 2 his aim.

That plan still leaves the everest on october 19 in play but hawkes would not be drawn on whether there has been any negotiations for a slot.

“They are things we don’t discuss on race day. We are a stable that loves to see how our horses pull up,” he said.

“he will be on everyone’s talking points. is he good enough to run - of course he is. Will we run - that is yet to be determined.

“The plan was always to have two runs into the golden eagle. he’s beaten the so called best sprinters in the land at the moment.”

Classique legend’s trainer les bridge was left to ponder what might have been.

Verry Elleegant (NZ) (Zed) has returned to winning form with a last-gasp victory in the gr.2 hill

stakes (2000m) at randwick, putting herself back in the frame for the major spring races.

Trainer Chris Waller said the gr.1 Cox Plate (2040m) and gr.1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) were back on the table after the mare nailed samadoubt (not a single doubt) in the final bound to win saturday’s group Two, 2000 metre race by a nose.

The gr.1 aTC australian oaks (2400m) winner in the autumn, Verry elleegant’s racing manners have let her down at times and Waller and his team have worked hard to iron out the kinks.

Their persistence appears to be paying off with Verry elllegant overcoming a moderate tempo to come from near-last and win by a nose from samadoubt with another three-quarters of a length to life less ordinary (Thewayyouare).

“We just went back to the basics, that was why she was back last,” Waller said.

it was good to see her settling a lot better.

“While she only won by a small margin, i think the run had a bit of merit considering where she’s come from.”

Verry elleegant had been touted as a Cox Plate contender at the start of the spring but the jury was out after she was unplaced at her first two starts.

Waller had pre-empted that her performance in the hill stakes would be pivotal to spring plans for the mare but

wanted to let the dust settle before he set a path in stone.

“i wouldn’t want to jump into it today, i want to assess everything, but it will be the Cox Plate or the Caulfield Cup,” Waller said.

Verry elleegant was ridden by James Mcdonald to give the trainer-jockey combination its fourth win on the day, with Waller eventually landing six winners on the nine race card, while Mcdonald won the last for Peter and Paul snowden to make his tally five.

Mcdonald indicated he regarded Verry elleegant as more suited to a Caulfield Cup (2400m) than a Cox Plate (2040m).

“she made a long sustained gallop and i know she will stay a mile-and-a-half and i think that is what she is wanting,” Mcdonald said.

bjorn baker was happy with the effort of samadoubt, who wasn’t at his best on rain-affected ground, and said the runner-up would also be considered

The oaks stud general manager rick Williams is proud to see Catalyst carrying the flag for the stud’s well-performed stallion darci brahma, who himself won the hawke’s bay guineas in track-record time in 2005.

“it’s very exciting, and him being a son of darci brahma adds even more to it,” he said.

“dick Karreman had told me to keep the horses who didn’t look like they’d sell for a lot of money, because he wanted to race them himself. This horse was one of those. i thought we might have a bit of fun with him, but i didn’t expect it to happen as quickly as it has. onwards and upwards from here,

we hope.”Catalyst’s next start will be in the gr.1 al basti equiworld

new Zealand 2000 guineas (1600m) at riccarton on november 9, where he will attempt to become the 12th horse to complete the hawke’s bay guineas-2000 guineas double.

Catalyst is now rated a $1.15 chance for the 2000 guineas – rare odds for an elite race in new Zealand.

“This race would have taken a bit out of him, so he won’t run again before the guineas,” Chipperfield said. “We’ll just give him a jumpout or exhibition gallop if he needs it.”

Craig grylls, rider of runner-up Callsign Mav, said the gelding was game in defeat.

“We sat outside the leader and Catalyst had to do a bit of work to get around me,” he said. “i thought that might soften him up a bit, but to the winner’s credit he was just far too good. My bloke chased hard in defeat and he is a good galloper with a bright future.”

True Enough was given a masterful ride by Jonathan Riddell to land the Gr.3 Red Badge Spring Sprint (1400m) at Hastings (Trish Dunell)

Talented Cambridge galloper True Enough (NZ) (nom de Jeu) has made the perfect start to a new campaign, scoring

a smart first-up win in the gr.3 red badge spring sprint (1400m) at hastings on saturday.

The son of nom du Jeu had won six of his 15 starts in previous campaigns, placing in another six including a third behind Volpe Veloce (Foxwedge) in the gr.2 Japan-nZ international Trophy (1600m).

all but one of those previous victories had come over longer distances than saturday’s 1400m. but in his first start since March, he produced a potent sprint to claim the biggest win of his career to date.

True enough was brilliantly ridden by Jonathan riddell, who moved him across to the rail in fifth position behind The Mitigator

“he’s just a really brave competitor,” Forsman said. “i think he’s started to race a little bit more truly now. early on, when he was coming up through the grades, he tended to hit the front and look around a bit.

“The type of horse that he is, i think stepping up to 1600m and 2000m should be no worry for him at all.”

The Mitigator’s runner-up performance held plenty of merit after working hard in the lead through the early part of the race, while hanger made up good ground late in the race to finish third.

(Master of design), dawn Patrol (nZ) (dawn approach), deerfield (nZ) (Falkirk) and stradivarius (nZ) (stravinsky).

riddell angled True enough off the back of The Mitigator in the straight and let him rip. The Mitigator showed plenty of fight, but True enough wore him down and edged past to win by half a length.

“he’s such a genuine horse,” co-trainer andrew Forsman said. “he just keeps stepping up every time we raise the bar.

“he’d run well in a couple of trials leading into this, so we were hoping he could sprint well fresh today. To be fair, it was the ride that won him the race. saving that ground was key.”

bred and part-owned by octogenarian Mick Preston and wife Valda, True enough has been lightly raced and could be in for his biggest season at the age of six.

he is nominated for next month’s gr.2 Coupland’s bakeries Mile (1600m) at riccarton, for which he is now rated an $18 chance. he may attempt to follow in the footsteps of Te akau shark (nZ) (rip Van Winkle), who won both the spring sprint and the Coupland’s bakeries Mile last spring.

a drop in grade paid instant dividends for honest mare Ararat Lady (NZ) (battle Paint)

on Friday night.Cliff brown’s four-year-old had

been testing her mettle against tougher opposition since her last win in a Class 4 race over 1100m in February, including even a raid in the Jbba singapore Three-Year-old sprint (1200m) in april.

While certainly not disgraced, she was a different proposition when eased back in the s$50,000 Class 4 division 1 race over 1200m.

bolting straight to the lead from barrier no 1, ararat lady never gave

any anxious moments to the punters who backed her down to $16.

The well-supported lim’s Zoom (nZ) (Zacinto) did let down, but when it was all over. he ran second 1 ¼ lengths away with lincoln Moonlight (nZ) (alamosa) third another neck away. The winning time was 1min 10.92secs for the 1200m on the Polytrack.

“That was a tremendous win for a good group of owners (Jass stable). it’s also good for the staff,” said brown.

“The race panned out nicely for her. she is a very genuine mare.

“i personally like to train mares, and i think more people should race them. here, there is no season, no autumn

or spring, so they have no cycle problems.

“They are really genuine performers and give me no issues at all.”

rodd said the return to a class which was more up ararat lady’s alley was the main winning factor.

“she’s a funny little thing. she’s been up in class and tonight, she was back in Class 4,” said the australian jockey.

“she drew a good barrier and she was left alone. We didn’t want to lead, but as nobody wanted to lead either, i couldn’t resist.

“The pace has been dynamite all night and i didn’t want to lose it. i know she won a restricted Maiden on turf, but i think Polytrack is more suitable for her.

“she’s got a really nice turn of foot.”With that third win from nine starts,

ararat lady has now chalked up in excess of s$130,000 for the Jass stable.
