WHERE ART THOUJAMES?What happened to directorJames Cameron and why ishe not making any movies?Could you please give mesome information about him?

Yogi YYMontreal, Quebec

On the heels of a little filmcalled TitanicTT , Cameron (bornccin Kapuskasing and raised inChippawa, Ontario) decided tokeep his focus underwater, helming two documentaries,

Ghosts of the Abyss (2003)and Aliens of the Deep(2005). However, he is return-ing to his sci-fi roots withBattle Angel, based on the firstllthree books in Yukito Kishiro’sseries of graphic novels about a female cyborg rescued from a scrap heap by a scientist inthe 26th century. With 1,500visual effects shots planned, you’ll have to wait untilDecember 2007 for the film.

FAIR WARNINGFFI will now go on record say-ing, “I LOVE Family GuyFF ”.Now that I’ve got that out ofmy system, I have to takeexception for your recent(December 2005 issue)inclusion of Family GuyFFVolume Three in a section ofVV“Family” DVDs. I wouldhave no problem showingthem to my kids, but thenmy youngest is 18 years old.If you do list it with family-oriented movies you could-n’t go wrong with a bit of awarning along the lines of,“Warning: Contains Humorof a Mature Nature.” Thanksfor listening and keep upthe good work. I read everyissue with enjoyment.

Split shockerOscar-winning actress Hilary Swank and husband Chad Lowe announced theirseparation after eight years of marriage.Despite the split, Swank, who appeared at the Golden Globes alone, said she andLowe are trying to save their marriage.“We’ve been together 13 years, andthere’s a lot of love there.”

She’s honoredMove over Angelina, Nicole Kidman is the latest celeb to be tapped to be a GoodwillAmbassador to the United Nations. The Oscarwinner’s new role with the U.N.’s DevelopmentFund for Women is to help “raise awareness onissues of pressing concern to women aroundthe world.” Later that same day the actress wasnamed a Companion of the Order of Australia, the country’s highest civilian honor. Hawaiian-born, Kidman’s family moved Down Underwhen she was four.

On the auction blockAuction site ebay, which sold WilliamShatner’s kidney stone for charity, recently took down a sonogram purported to beAngelina Jolie’s. The item was removed by ebay explaining it “violated their policy oncelebrity materials.” It was later purchasedfrom the seller by an online gambling site for$3,800. The same site also purchased Shatner’sunique memorabilia item for $25,000.

Baby maniaHollywood’s latest baby boom can onlymean one thing—more head-scratching baby names. Among the stars expecting little bundles of joy are Gwyneth Paltrow and rocker Chris Martin (Plum Martin perhaps?), Russell Crowe and wife DanielleSpencer, Rachel Weisz and director DarrenAronofsky, and of course, the genetically-blessed offspring of Brangelina. If the tabsare to be believed, Jennifer Lopez and hubbyMarc Anthony could well be welcoming a little Lopez this fall as well.

Girls behaving badlyNew gal pals Lindsay Lohan andbeleaguered model Kate Moss appear to have a bone to pick with blonde beautiesScarlett Johansson and Sienna Miller. Lohanis said to have been behind some veryoffensive graffiti about Johansson on the wallof NYC’s Dark Room bar, while Moss isreported to have complained publicly thatmodels, not Miller, deserve to be on thecover of fashion magazines.

Capote

Based on the strength of Philip Seymour Hoffman’saward count for his portrayal of controversial author

Truman Capote, Capote is now in contention for the bigprize. The film recounts the crucial chapter in Capote’s career when he began writing his celebrated non-fictionnovel In Cold Blood about the brutal murder of a family offour in rural Kansas. In the course of his research, Capote isshocked to discover he is developing a friendship with oneof his killers. Supported by solid performances from BestSupporting actress nominee Catherine Keener, CliftonCollins Jr., and the fluid direction of newcomer and BestDirector nominee Bennett Miller, it is Hoffman’s subtle takeon a showy character that will likely be rewarded.

Brokeback Mountain

T here ain’t no reigns on this one,”says Heath Ledger’s characterEnnis Del Mar to Jack Twist (Jake

Gyllenhaal) in Brokeback Mountain. Sotrue. Who would have guessed this darkhorse, a film that made the rounds inHollywood with several different actorsand directors attached, would become thisyear’s frontrunner. Based on the short story by Annie Proulx, this tale of twoyoung cowboys who discover an intimaterelationship, depicts just how life changinglove can be. Under the steady direction ofAng Lee and featuring a stellar cast in-Acluding Best Supporting Actress nomineeMichelle Williams, Brokeback is beautifulto watch but difficult as well, as Ennis andJack try to keep their doomed love alivedespite the circumstances that definetheir daily lives.

Good Night, and Good Luck

Should Good Night, and Good Luck winBest Picture, it would be the first black-

and-white film since 1993’s Schindler’s Listto do so. Using the 1950s clash betweenCBS anchorman Edward R. Murrow andSenator Joseph McCarthy as the backdrop,Best Director nominee George Clooneyhas fashioned a compelling tale of personalfreedom vs. protection of the state that is astimely now as it was during the McCarthyera. With a star-making role for Best Actornominee David Strathairn and strongsupporting performances from PatriciaClarkson, Robert Downey Jr. and Clooney, this is a fitting tribute to one of journalism’smost respected figures.

Crash

Never underestimate the underdog. Strongword of mouth and positive reviews com-

bined with a timely message and a talented castcould be enough for the little indie that could to

collide with the golden guy. Helmed byfirst time feature film director PaulHaggis, this ensemble piece follows thelives of a dozen Los Angeles residentsincluding black, white, Latino, Asianand Persian, and their interconnected-ness over a 36-hour period. The resultis a gut-wrenching series of events thatforces the moviegoer to consider thequestion of race in America. With a nodfor Matt Dillon in the Best Supporting

Actor category and one for Best OriginalScreenplay, Crash could be the speedbump in theroad for Brokeback Mountain.

Munich

T he Oscar buzz surrounding Munich beganeven when it was still being called “Untitled

Spielberg Project.” After completing the sci-fispectacular War of WorldsWW , Spielberg did a 180, di-recting this story about the aftermath of the 1972Summer Olympics massacre of 11 Israeli athletesand the secret Israeli squad assigned to trackdown and assassinate the Palestinians believed tohave masterminded it. Spielberg’s examination ofthe cycle of bloodshed in the Middle East illus-trated with the glorious cinematography that hasbecome his hallmark makes for a thought-provok-ing experience. However, a lack of acting nomina-tions and a controversial subject may mean theAcademy passes on Spielberg’s latest offering.

Philip SeymourHoffmanCapote

Philip Seymour Hoffman,by all accounts a big guy,

may have seemed an oddchoice to play thin, wispy-voiced author Truman Capote. However, the story of how

Capote’s life changed in writing his nonfiction classic InCold Blood was as compelling as his work. The actortold TributeTT , “The more I found out, the more interest-ed and obsessed I became about it.” Hoffman’s abilityto transform into the talented and tortured writer hasmade this hard-working actor a frontrunner after tak-ing home the Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild’shonors in a category packed with impressive nominees.

Joaquin PhoenixWalk the LineWW

For his role as the iconic‘man in black’, Joaquin

Phoenix enrolled in a four-month crash course to under-stand what it was like to beJohnny Cash. He spentmonths studying tapes ofCash’s performances, taught himself to play guitar andeven performed the film’s vocals himself. The result isa spot-on performance of the music legend at hisbrightest and at his darkest. A Best Supporting Actornod in 2000 for his turn as the young and paranoidEmperor Commodus in Gladiator plus a Golden Globewin for WalkWW , proves once again that Phoenix is one ofHollywood’s most talented young actors.

David StrathairnGood Night, and Good Luck

Despite more than 30 yearsin the business, stage and

screen actor David Strathairnhas managed to fly under theradar. Now he’s the subject ofintense Oscar buzz for his career-defining role as ground-breaking newsman Edward R. Murrow in Good Night, and Good Luck. Conveying the spark that Murrow wasknown for during his on-air scuffles with SenatorJoseph McCarthy, Strathairn’s portrayal anchors thisgripping film. “You really only get one chance to inves-tigate a character like this and I wasn’t going to pass itup,” Strathairn told TributeTT . Good thing, since he wouldhave turned down his first opportunity for an Oscar.

Terrence HowardTTHustle & Flow

With not one, but twoWWstrong performancesWW(Crash and Hustle & Flow),2005 was Terrence Howard’syear. In Hustle, Howard isDJay, a rapping pimp fromMemphis who has one last

shot to record his flow and make his dream of fameand fortune come true. His brutally honest perfor-mance as an essentially likeable hero with an unlikable profession has been hailed as a breakoutthat is sure to make him an A-lister. Howard toldTributeTT he loves being an actor, and although the talk of success and awards can be overwhelming “it’s a dream that you live for.”

Heath LedgerBrokeback Mountain

In the grand tradition of many male stars,Heath Ledger began his career as a teenheartthrob (A Knight’s Tale(( ). After a few

not-too-successful follow-up films, Ledger took a step back, taking on riskier parts including a small but memorable turn as Billy BobThornton’s son in 2001’s Monster’s Ball. It wasthat role that convinced director Ang Lee thatLedger had what it took to play Ennis Del Mar, a gruff ranch hand of few words who falls in lovewith fellow cowboy Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal). As a man struggling with his forbidden passion, his responsibilities to his family and society’s demands, Ledger’s performance is as heartbreaking as itis mesmerizing.

George ClooneySyriana

George Clooney has be-come the ultimate triple

threat. Aside from acting,Clooney has been dabbling inthe roles of producer and direc-tor. This year Clooney has gar-nered three Oscar nods, one in

the director’s category, one for writing and the other forSyriana. In Syriana, Clooney is Robert Barnes, a rumpledCIA operative thrown to the wolves by Washington’sheartless bureaucracy. Clooney even gained 30 pounds forthe part and grew a shaggy salt-and-pepper beard. “Youcan’t be instantly recognizable and be a CIA agent,” he toldTributeTT . “I felt it was important to look a little beaten.”After just winning a Golden Globe, this may be his year.ff

Paul GiamattiPPCinderella Man

Over the years PaulGiamatti has graduated

from being a bellhop in My BestFriend’s WeddingFF (1997) toprime indie roles such as comicbook illustrator Harvey Pekarin American Splendor (2003)and Miles in Sideways (2004). But when it came to nailinga big-budget flick, Giamatti delivered. In Cinderella Man,he plays Joe Gould, a ringside corner man to fighter JamesBraddock (Russell Crowe). The role has finally earnedthe deserving Giamatti his first Oscar nod. “Everything Idid was improv… Ron (Howard) was merciless about it.He wanted me narrating the fights from the corner. Itwasn’t like anything I’d ever done before.”

William HurtWWA History of Violence

William Hurt knows whatWWit feels like to win anWWOscar. Named Best Actor in1986 for Kiss of the SpiderWomanWW , Hurt also earned twonods each year following forChildren of a Lesser God (1986)and Broadcast News (1987). In ViolenceVV , his fourth kick atthe can, Hurt plays Richard Cusack, a mob kingpin andlong-lost brother to Viggo Mortensen’s Tom Stall whosuddenly reappears in his brother’s life after Stall re-ceives unwanted attention for a self-defense killing at hisdiner. Critics say, Hurt’s part as a mobster, colored withdark humor, was cast brilliantly against type. His perfor-mance is so striking he may be the dark horse in this race.

Matt DillonCrash

Matt Dillon has done whatmost actors only hope

to achieve while starting out at a young age, and that’s toendure the rigors of show bizfor over two decades. Throughhis 26-year-long film career,

with highlights including The Outsiders (1983), RumbleFishFF (1983) and Drugstore Cowboy (1989), Dillon hasn’tgarnered much in the awards department, until Crash.Following events that take place over a 36-hour periodFFin a post–9/11 L.A. filled with racial, ethnic and socioe-conomic tension, Dillon plays Sgt. Jack Ryan, a dirty, racist L.A. cop. It’s definitely become his top careerhighlight earning him his first ever Oscar nomination.

Jake GyllenhaalBrokeback Mountain

Jake Gyllenhaal had a great 2005. With threefilm releases, Proof, ff Jarhead and BrokebackMountain, Gyllenhaal is in hot demand. But

it’s his role as Jack Twist in Brokeback Mountainthat’s generating a loud buzz in Hollywood—andwith good reason. The praise is coming fromGyllenhaal’s bold portrayal of a gay cowboy that findsunexpected love with another man (Heath Ledger).“I read the script and I was immediately blown awayby it,” Gyllenhaal told TributeTT . “There was just noquestion in my mind that I was going to do it.” Hischaracter’s tough-guy persona, as well as having to perform intimate on-screen lovescenes with his co-star Ledger, shows Gyllenhaal’s ability to take risks and stretchhis versatility as an actor. This is his first Oscar nomination.

in Hollywood. At 71, theBritish actress already hasthree Oscar nods to her name, and one Best SupportingActress win for her unforget-

In her most recentfilm, Mrs. Henderson Presents, Dench portrays Laura Henderson—a gutsy woman who resurrectedLondon’s famous Windmill Theatre, turning it into asuccessful all-nude revue during World War II. Of therole Dench says, “I knew the story of it… and it seemedlike the dream part to have.”

Keira KnightleyPride & Prejudice

Keira Knightley’s career hasbeen on the upswing since

2002’s Bend it like Beckham. Atonly 20 years old, Knightley isproving herself to be a seriousactress. Starring in blockbustercomedies like Pirates of theCaribbean I and II and action flicks like Domino, the youngstarlet flaunts her amazing dramatic versatility. But it’swith her portrayal as the spirited Elizabeth Bennet, in JaneAusten’s AA Pride & Prejudice that’s garnered the Britishbeauty her career’s best reviews. Of her role, Knightleytold TributeTT , “This was a character, a film, a process that I was so obsessed with. I was in every scene except oneor two. I worked my socks off and absolutely loved it.”

Charlize TheronNorth Country

Judging from history, theOscar’s love honoring real-

life portrayals. In Theron’s case, that proved to be true with herBest Actress win in 2004 forher role as serial killer AileenWuornos in WW Monster. Theron isagain a leading contender for North Country. In the film,Theron plays the courageous Josey Aimes, a characterbased on a woman who endured a range of abuse whileworking at a mine, who filed and won the landmark1984 lawsuit (Jenson vs. Eveleth Mines) against harass-ment in the workplace. Although the film did not achievebox office success, her performance, lauded by critics, may be all she needs to snag a golden statue.

Felicity HuffmanFFTransamericaTT

Before she was one of TV’sDesperateBB housewives,

Felicity Huffman, accepted theFFrole of Bree (formerly Stanley,)rra transsexual preparing for hersexual reassignment surgery.Discovering she has a son, she

finds herself on an unexpected journey in TransamericaTT .Much like Charlize Theron’s performance in Monsterand Hilary Swank’s in Boys Don’t Cry, Huffman’s per-formance is all about risk and transformation. “I didn’tthink I could pull it off,” she says. She obviously figured it out, disappearing into the skin of the self-conscious and conservative Bree. She’s already been honored with a Best Actress Golden Globe.

Reese WitherspoonWalk the LineWW

Reese Witherspoon has come a long way injust a few short years—winning fans withher portrayal of sweet, feisty characters like

the dippy lawyer Elle Woods in Legally Blonde andas the overly ambitious Tracy Flick in Election. Butit’s with her portrayal as country legend JuneCarter in Walk the Line that’s garnering the star herfirst Oscar nod. In order to prepare for the roleWitherspoon took singing lessons, which wassomething that almost made her reconsider accept-ing the part. She told TributeTT : “I was terrified. I did-n’t know whether or not I would be able to sing. I get terrible stage fright… and bythe end of the film we were singing in front of a crowd of 3000.” It’s a good thing shedid and with the awards piling up Witherspoon is the one to beat this year.

Amy AdamsJunebug

Who is Amy Adams youWWask? Starring in B-listWWmovies such as 1999’s DropDead Gorgeous , 2002’sServing Sara and 2005’s TheWedding DateWW , Adams is prob-ably remembered best for her

role alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in 2002’s Catch Me ifYou CanYY . But many actresses launching their careershave done so with sleeper indie hits and Junebug maybe Adams’ breakout role. Adams plays the awkwardlycheerful Ashley, about to give birth after marrying hergloomy, rage-filled high school sweetheart. Critics havepraised the actress for her strong acting abilities in theflick, who at times steals the spotlight.

Frances McDormandNorth Country

F rances McDormand isno stranger to Oscar.

Playing Marge Gunderson in1996’s FargoFF earned hera Best Actress award. Morethan a dozen f i lms la terMcDormand seemed to slipunder the radar with smaller parts. Her role as Gloryin North Country puts her back on the forefront.McDormand plays a pivotal role as a tough-as-nailsfemale mine worker who takes a new worker, JoseyAimes (Charlize Theron), under her wing, helping her win the first sexual harassment suit in 1984.Some critics say her performance is so powerful thatshe carries the film.

Rachel WeiszThe Constant Gardener

You’ll recall Rachel WeiszYYmostly running away fromYYancient mummies withBrendan Fraser in both TheMummy and The MummyReturns. But her first nod ofrecognition is with the verypoignant political thriller The Constant Gardener. In thefilm, Weisz is Tessa Quayle, wife of a British diplomat(Ralph Fiennes) who, while working in Kenya, tries toexpose a pharmaceutical company’s faulty drug testingon locals and conspiracies to cover up deaths. “I play a character that has no fear,” she told Tribute. “She believes in justice. That’s what inspired me.” It mayprove inspirational enough for the Academy as well.

Catherine KeenerCapote

You may recognize herYYmost recently from herYYturn as Trish in The 40 YearOld Virgin (2005). But it’s withher part in Capote that Keeneris receiving accolades. In thefilm, she plays Harper Lee, the

Pulitzer Prize-winning author of the classic novel To KillA Mockingbird, and friend to writer Truman Capote(Philip Seymour Hoffman)—whom she helps research,In Cold Blood—his most lauded work. Keener says ofddher role, “I always loved Scout as a literary figure… butI also thought the script was great and I love Phil[Seymour Hoffman]. The idea of him playing Capote, Iwanted to support it. I liked her being the moral center.”

Michelle WilliamsBrokeback Mountain

Since leaving the teen drama Dawson’sCreek far behind her, Michelle Williams’career has been mediocre, hitting mostly

the stage and indie flicks, with Dick as her mostnoted big-screen highlight. Since taking a plumrole in Brokeback Mountain Williams has put her-self back into the Hollywood spotlight—turningit into her most important role to date. In the film Williams plays Alma, a young woman whomarries ranch hand Ennis Del Mar (HeathLedger) only to discover her husband is in lovewith another man. George ClooneyGood Night, and Good Luck

No one would have faultedGeorge Clooney for cruis-

ing along on his considerablecharm, earning big bucks inmild-mannered films. No onebut Clooney, it seems. Lastyear, the once small-screen

hunk and second-time feature film director helmed, co-wrote and co-starred in the hotly political Good Night, and Good Luck, about journalist Edward R. Murrow’s1954 public battle with Senator Joseph McCarthy.Clooney’s expertly crafted yet subtle critique of con-temporary government and news reporting, along with his growing reputation as a sought-after director, could be enough to earn him his first Oscar honor.

Bennett MillerCapote

It doesn’t get much betterfor Bennett Miller’s feature

film debut, Capote. Nominatedfor Best Picture, Best Actorand Best Supporting Actress,it seems only fitting the manwho put it all together be rec-ognized as well. Miller, a one-time TV commercial anddocumentary director, decided to take on the projectwhen friend Dan Futterman (nominated for BestAdapted Screenplay), sent him a script about authorTruman Capote’s experiences while researching hismost famous book, In Cold Blood. Miller’s resulting film is a portrait of the few isolating years in Capote’slife that went on to define his literary career.

Steven SpielbergMunich

Arguably Hollywood’s mostrfamous director, Steven

Spielberg has built his careeron being a great storyteller—not necessarily on beingprovocative. But Munich, mayhave inadvertently changed allof that. “It’s easy to look back at historic events with thebenefit of hindsight,” stated Spielberg referring to theMossad squad hired to assassinate the Palestinianterrorists behind the 1972 Summer Olympic massacre of11 Israeli athletes. “What’s not so easy is to try to seethings as they must have looked to people at the time.”Spielberg already has two Oscar wins in this category for Schindler’s List and Saving Private Ryan.

Paul HaggisPPCrash

Paul Haggis makes a returntrip to the red carpet this

year, this time in the BestDirector category after hisscreenplay nomination for lastyear’s Million Dollar Baby.Inspired by a gunpoint carjack-

ing he survived in the early ’90s, Haggis’ directorial debuttackles the thorny issues of race and intolerance inAmerica. His stellar script (nominated for Best OriginalScreenplay with Bobby Moresco) eventually lured an A-list ensemble of actors to tell the film’s interconnectedstories of prejudice, consequences and, in some cases, redemption. The film packs an emotional wallop and couldrrsee Haggis walk away with an award at the end of the night.

Ang LeeBrokeback Mountain

The range of subjects covered by Ang Lee’sfilms is nothing short of extraordinary—from suburban 1970s America in The Ice

Storm to the struggle between love and obligationin the epic Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon to themannered 18th-century drama of Sense andSensibility. What ties all of his films together arecarefully drawn characters of great depth caught indifficult but engaging situations. In BrokebackMountain, based on Annie Proulx’s short story,Golden Globe and Directors Guild awards-winnerLee, presents the complex, passionate relationship between two young cowboys. What could have been a mess under different direction succeeds as a visually striking and sensitive love story thanks to his skill.

WWallace & Gromit in The CurseWWof the Were-Rabbito

Who would have guessed that one the year’s bestWWfilms would feature a cheese-loving inventorWWnamed Wallace and his faithful dog Gromit? Well, theirnfans for one. Howl’s Moving Castle

Hayao Miyazaki (winner of the 2003 Best AnimatedOscar for Spirited Away) has another hit on his hands

with Howl’s Moving Castle. In fact his latest anime offering isnow the third top-grossing film in Japan after TitanicTT andSpirited Away. Miyazaki’s plucky heroine this time around isSophie, an average teen working in a hat shop whose life isthrown for a loop when she is literally swept away by Howl(voiced by Christian Bale), the handsome master of a movingcastle rumored to devour the hearts of beautiful youngwomen. However, Howl’s attention to Sophie annoys the vainWitch of Waste who transforms the shy girl into a 90-year-oldWWwoman. Mostly hand-drawn, the film may not appeal to theyounger set but is a magical must-see for animation fans.

oscar loves alove story. So it should come

as no su rp r i se tha tBrokeback Mountain is afrontrunner despite beinga tale of forbidden lovebetween a ranch handand a rodeo cowboy. However, a real romancewas also budding onthe set. TributeTT ’s BonnieLaufer-Krebs spoke tonew dad and Best Actornominee Heath Ledger

and his “soul mate”, Best Supporting Actressnominee Michelle Williams, about makingthis groundbreaking film.

Heath Ledger

When you got this script it had to havereally touched you in a very special way. After reading the script I knew right away thatit was a special story and also a story thathadn’t been told. I think that it is so rare, especially in Hollywood.

Did you hesitate at all, given the subjectmatter?I understood that there was going to be a lotof responsibility on my shoulders to repre-sent this form of love and I knew that in order to do justice to the story I’d really haveto mature as a person and mature as anactor. So I was really looking forward to thatand growing in so many ways.

How did you and Jake Gyllenhaal go aboutforming the trust that goes along with hav-ing to play these characters and get pastsome of the scenes you had to do? I think just the fact that Jake committed to this story and likewise, I committed to the

story, we immediate-ly had respect foreach other for mak-ing this courageouschoice. So I think thatalone was enough toreally bond us.

I would think thatth i s exper iencehelped form a strongfriendship.Absolutely! We didbecome good friendsand the process of making this film I think, changed us both. As soon as we got on setwe were like, ‘O.K. man I’ve got your back, you’ve got mine, we’re knee deep in thisnow and let’s support each other.’ We areboth really professional guys and we knewthe story we had to tell and so we just wentfor it.

Michelle Williams

What touched you about this script?Everything really. Especially the way every-one wants each other but can’t have whatthey want. The way my character, Alma, loved and wanted Ennis (Heath Ledger) butcouldn’t have all of him. The way that themen loved each other but could not expresstheir love openly. It just moved me to tearsthat no one could be together.

It is such a tragic love story all the wayaround. It never stops. It never lets up.

Another huge draw for you must have beengiven the chance to work with directorAng Lee?Yes, it was an absolute dream. It wasn’t theYYkind of movie where I said, ‘oh should I do it,

or no I’m not sure.’ You just beg andhope and pray that you’re going tobe able to be a part of it in some way.

Was this a challenging film for you?WWThe work was tough and emotion-ally draining so it was hard somedays getting through some of the

scenes. Having said that, I think at the endof the day we were all so pleased to bethere telling this story that we would havedone just about anything. We all felt trulylucky to be a part of it.

There is a heartbreaking scene when Almadiscovers the truth about her husband. Howdid you work that out? That was a very hard scene to tackle. I thinkthat Alma was a pretty strong character giv-en everything she had to go through. It’samazing that she stayed on her own two feetand I think that was her struggle for the restof the scene.

Do you think Alma would have felt anydifferent if Ennis was involved with awoman? To be honest, I think her heart would havebeen just as broken no matter what.

Then of course, something phenomenalhappened in your “real life” on this set. Youfell in love with your co-star Heath Ledger.Yes, it’s where we met.YY

What was it about Heath that stole yourheart?(Giggles) Everything.

On-screen heartbreakleads to off-screen romance for BrokebackMountain’s Heath LedgerHeath Ledgersand Michelle Williams

after years in Hollywoodand dozens of roles, audiences may still be

wondering David who? All thathas changed with Strathairn’s roleas the pioneering CBS anchor-man. Bonnie Laufer-Krebs talks tothe star about Murrow’s legacyand working with, writer, co-starand director, George Clooney.

In your opinion, what kind of man wasEdward R. Murrow? He was a great man. By evidence of what hedid and what he began and was responsiblefor, he was a groundbreaker. When you seeanything in today’s world of broadcast jour-nalism, you can trace it back to him.

He certainly was ahead of his time.Yes, from interviewing celebrities to editori-YYalizing, he did it very responsibly and healways spoke his own opinions and notthose of the station (CBS). Any standards, thehigh-water marks are his.

Were you nervous about taking on this role?I was because he was held in such highregard and he was so particular. He’s remem-bered for those particularities. The way hespoke, his presence around the studio andthe way he thought. He certainly had anaspect to him that there were two things hap-pening at once. On the outside he had thisdignified demeanor and inside I think he waschurning. I was most nervous about giving

a responsible per-formance especial-ly for those whoremember him.

Are you a smoker? No. Not at all.

Well, Murrow certainly was, in fact a chainWWsmoker. How did you get through shootingthose scenes cigarette after cigarette? It was pretty gross after a while. They allsmoked back then and we were told thatthe ashtrays were completely full every day.You would never see Murrow without a cig-YYarette in his hand. We smoked pipe tobac-co for the most part, which was a lot milder. We didn’t smell at the end of the day likecigarette tobacco and it worked well for themovie. One positive side effect is that you’dget really thick smoke so it looked great onthe black and white palate of the film.

This was George Clooney’s second time inthe director’s chair. What impressed youabout George, not just as a co-star, but asa director? As an actor he understands what kind ofenvironment is needed to do your best workand he provided that. He was always there,on top of everything, dealing all of us anAce every single day.

I am sure his dad, who is a journalist, mustbe very proud of him. Most definitely. Nick Clooney came to set

quite often and youcould see he was beam-ing with pride. Georgewas truly in his elementmaking the film. This isan incredibly tight, exciting film, which isnot only intellectuallygreat but beautiful tolook at. If anybody had any doubts aboutGeorge or his ability todirect, this should defi-nitely dispel them.

The rest ofyour life doesn’t flow as smoothly.Love scenes are sweet but unfulfilling, and may take an unexpected directionon the 5th. Mark the 14th as a key timeto meet important people. Just dodgeanyone who looks ready to makeirrational demands. Some revelationsare in store on the 27th. Be open to new ways of conducting business.

cancer june 22 - july 22New opportunities in bothmoney and career are ontap. Showing you can keep your noseto the grindstone scores the mostpoints. On Valentine’s Day, you’re justnot in the mood. Since the passionquotient is highest after the 17th, bestdelay any steamy love scenes.Impromptu romantic interludes provemost satisfying anyway. You can get a bonus if you ask on the 23rd. Revel inyour day in the sun late in the month, perhaps literally with a getaway tosunnier shores.

Be ready to improvise and doa lot of reading between the lines.Mid-month you achieve someacclaim, though it’s still not up to yourtrue star power. Keep aiming for thetop. All attempts at romance fizzlearound the 14th, but don’t be discour-aged. You could enter a new partner-ship later in the month or renew somevows in an existing one. Ziyi Zhang - Aquarius, born February 9, 1979, Beijing, ChinaFull of surprises and able to pulloff the impossible and make itlook easy—Zhang would seem

to be a true Aquarius. Her big break came whendirector Ang Lee cast her in the Oscar-winningCrouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Despite hav-ing no previous martial arts training, she shonein the role of a high-flying butt–kicking prodigy.True to her sign, she remained cool under pres-sure, going on to land cosmetic companyspokesperson contracts and more movie roles.Although reviews for last year’s Memoirs of aGeisha were mixed, her chart shows continuedsuccess. Next she tries her hand at comedy play-ing opposite Adam Sandler in Good Cook, LikesMusic. And do expect more surprises to come.
