RIO 2016 | TRIATHLON MEDIA GUIDE4 RIO 2016 | TRIATHLON MEDIA GUIDE 5
Welcome to the men’s and women’s triathlon at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games! It’s hard to believe that triathlon is being contested for the fifth time at the Olympic Games. What a journey it has been over the last 27 years as an International Federation, having reached a level of success and popularity beyond our imagination.
We are thrilled to be here in beautiful Brazil, with triathlon contested on the iconic Copacabana Beach and Sugarloaf Mountain looming in the distance. The stage is majestically set for athletes to swim, bike and run their way to the Olympic podium.
I’m proud to announce that this year’s Olympic fields feature the widest variety of athletes we’ve ever seen before with 42 National Federations represented on the start lists. The direction of triathlon continues to grow in the right direction, with participation continuing to increase every year, and races growing more competitive each season. We are so proud to have the whole world witness our amazing sport during the Games.
As we forge ahead with another epic season, I'd like to reiterate ITU's commitment to growing the sport of triathlon to evolving all of our multisports, but always with the athletes being our foremost priority.
While Mixed Relay won’t yet be included in the Olympic programme, we are committed to seeing its entry at future Olympic Games. I’m sure after witnessing the men’s and women’s triathlon in Rio that you will agree the Olympics would benefit from more dynamic, fast paced triathlon racing.
We truly believe triathlon is for all, no matter the age or ability. We here at ITU look forward to the challenge of continuing to grow the sport in the coming years.
Sincerely,
FOREWORD
Marisol CasadoPresident, International Triathlon UnionMember of the International Olympic Committee
RIO 2016 | TRIATHLON MEDIA GUIDE6 RIO 2016 | TRIATHLON MEDIA GUIDE 7
Triathlon grew rapidly from its humble beginnings in San Diego and within a matter of years it became one of the fastest growing sports all over the world. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) was intrigued by the sport’s meteoric growth and began discussions to include triathlon in the Olympic Games Programme in 1988. Then IOC president Juan Antonio Samaranch arranged a meeting in Stockholm that year with the intention of including triathlon in the Olympic Games as soon as possible. At that meeting Canadian Les McDonald was selected as President to a working committee for triathlon, while Sweden’s Sture Jonasson was elected as Secretary. Triathlon was officially added to the Olympic Programme by the IOC at its Congress in Paris in 1994.
Triathlon made its official Olympic debut in Sydney, where Simon Whitfield and Brigitte McMahon stamped their names into the history books as the first gold medallists. In Athens, it was Hamish Carter and Kate Allen’s golden turn before Emma Snowsill and Jan Frodeno won the gold in Beijing. In London, it was Alistair Brownlee and Nicola Spirig that stood atop the podium.
Overall, Australia is on top of the Olympic medal tally with a total of five. As well as Snowsill’s gold Australian women have collected two silver medals and two bronze. Switzerland is next in the medal count with four – two of which were gold, followed by New Zealand with three medals. Then Canada, Germany and Great Britain have two medals each, while Austria, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Czech Republic and USA have all scored one Olympic medal.
OLYMPIC HISTORY
There are a total of 110 spots in the triathlon events at the Rio 2016 Olympics, 55 men and 55 women. The ITU’s international triathlon circuit, which includes the World Triathlon Series, World Cups and Continental Championships, is where athletes competed for Olympic qualification. The qualification took place over a two-year period, from May 15th 2014 until May 15th 2016, and athletes competed both for themselves and their respective countries to secure berths for Rio 2016.
The majority of National Federation Olympic slots are decided through the ITU Olympic qualification points lists. National Federations can also gain spots if one of their athletes wins a continental championship, as well as by winning the ITU Olympic Qualification Event. For Rio, this was the 2015 Rio Test Event. Additionally, National Federations can earn spots via new flag slots, in which the ITU awards berths to one country per continent that would otherwise not have a slot. Once the NF spots have been decided, athletes are then nominated by their National Federation to fill then, and then selected by their National Olympic Committee.
In all, a record number of 42 NOCs had qualified spots at the triathlon competition for Rio 2016, the highest number ever for triathlon at an Olympic Games. In London there were 39 NOCs, and in Beijing 2008, there were 36 NOCs that had qualified positions. Prior to that, there were 33 in Athens 2004 and 34 in Sydney 2000, although in those Olympics, there were 50 women and 50 men on the start lists as opposed to 55 now. Among the 42 NOCs this year, six have qualified a spot for the first time in the history of triathlon at the Olympic Games, including: Azerbaijan, Barbados, Israel, Jordan and Norway.
The eight NOCs that were able to qualify the maximum of three women are Australia, Canada, Germany, Great Britain, Japan, Spain, Russia, and the United States.
The eight NOCs that have qualified the maximum of three men are Australia, France, Great Britain, Mexico, Portugal, Russia, Spain and the United States.

ITU TRIATHLON HISTORY
The first recorded triathlon took place in San Diego, California. Organised by the San Diego Track & Field Club as an alternative to the rigors of training on the track, the race consisted of a 5.3-mile run, followed by a 5-mile bike and a 600-yard swim in the bay. A total of 46 athletes finished the race.
ITU currently has more than 160 affiliated
National Federations.
The discipline first emerged in 1996, but the inaugural ITU Cross Triathlon World Championships were held in 2011 in Extremadura, Spain.
The sport was officially accepted into the
Paralympic Games at the IPC Governing
Board meeting in Guangzhou, China.
The ITU World Triathlon Series was created as ITU’s top tier race series, staging multiple rounds in iconic cities across the globe.
Marisol Casado became ITU’s
second President.
First stand-alone Paratriathlon
World Championships held.
Triathlon made its Olympic debut at the 2000 Sydney Games. Brigitte McMahon (SUI) and Simon Whitfield (CAN) won the sport’s first gold medals.

who only swam and ran to join the multisport world.
First Long Distance Duathlon World Championships held in Zofingen, Switzerland, and the first Winter Triathlon World Championships took place in Mals, Italy.
The first Congress of ITU was organised by the
Working Committee in Avignon, France on
April 1. Thirty (30) NFs were in attendance.
Four months later on August 6, the inaugural
World Championships was held in Avignon
France over an “Olympic Distance”. More than 800 athletes representing 40
countries participated.
First Duathlon World Championships held in Cathedral City, USA
The ITU Triathlon World Cup Series began, staging 11 races in eight countries.

WTS HISTORY
The ITU World Triathlon Series was introduced in 2009, creating a series of world championship races rather than a single-day world championship. From 2009 until 2011, it was called the Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship series, but was re-branded in 2012 as the ITU World Triathlon Series. There will be nine rounds in the 2016 season, culminating with the Grand Final in Cozumel in September. The world’s top triathletes will compete head-to-head for rankings points that determine the overall ITU world champion, with media and fans able to watch from everywhere with a live international broadcast feed available from every event.
THE 2016 SEASONTwo new cities were added to the docket in 2016 to make it a nine-stop circuit. For the second time, the Series opener was in the Middle East with a race in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. However this season, Abu Dhabi offered a standard-distance race for the elites as opposed to a sprint as was contested in 2015. The second stop was Gold Coast, Queensland. Cape Town was the third stop, but this year offers up as a sprint-distance course. Following Yokohama, which was the fourth stop up, the Series hit the halfway mark before heading to Europe. The English city of Leeds, home to the Brownlee brothers, hosted a standard-distance course. After the elites competed in Stockholm and Hamburg, there’s a brief hiatus in the Series while the athletes head to Rio de Janeiro for the Olympic Games. Following Rio 2016, the circuit heads to Canada, where Edmonton will once again offer up a sprint distance race before the Grand Final. The 2016 World Triathlon Grand Final will be hosted in Cozumel, Mexico. The city that has been home to three World Cups since 2013.

SYDNEY 2000 OLYMPIC GAMES
The much anticipated Olympic debut of triathlon was staged amidst the stunning backdrop of Sydney’s famed opera house and was punctuated by a pair of surprise winners. Not only did triathlon announce its arrival to the world, the sport was given the honour of being one of the first events of the Sydney Games.
WOMEN’S REVIEW – SEPTEMBER 16, 2000On the first day of competition in Sydney, 50 women dove into Farm Cove, the inlet just east of the Opera House. All eyes were on Aussie Michellie Jones, the heavy pre-race favourite who won the test event just five months earlier. As the women began the first triathlon in Olympic history, American Sheila Taormina emerged from the water first, almost 30 seconds ahead of the rest of the field. But the former swimmer couldn’t hold the lead through the entire bike leg and by the time the women headed onto the run course Jones was in front, much to the delight of the Australian faithful.
However, gold for the home country didn’t come as expected and predicted. Instead it was Switzerland’s Brigitte McMahon who sprinted down the home stretch past the Opera House and into history as triathlon’s first Olympic gold medallist. Jones settled for silver, just two heartbreaking seconds behind McMahon. Magali Messmer made it a banner day for Switzerland, taking the bronze. All three women were on the podium together at the Sydney ITU Triathlon World Cup on April 16, which was contested on the same course.
MEN’S REVIEW – SEPTEMBER 17, 2000After the world caught its breath and properly digested the huge upset of the women’s race, 50 men tackled the same course the next day in search of Olympic glory. Aussie Craig Walton had the locals cheering as he led the men out of the water. Right on his heels were a duo many predicted would clash for gold, New Zealand’s Hamish Carter and Great Britain’s Simon Lessing. But it was another Simon who came from nowhere to pull off the second stunner.
Despite being down more than a minute off the bike, Canadian Simon Whitfield shredded the run course to move himself back into contention. With 800 metres to go, he was still 40 metres behind Germany’s Stefan Vuckovic. But with a final finishing kick that would define his career, Whitfield leaped across the finish line to win Olympic gold. He posted the fastest run split of the day and was the only man to run under 31 minutes. Vuckovic held on for the silver, the very medal he won at the test event in April. The Czech Republic’s Jan Rehula claimed the bronze medal.

ATHENS 2004 OLYMPIC GAMES
Amid the stunning beauty of Athens, triathlon exploded onto the Olympic stage for the second time in the sport’s history and the result was equally spectacular. In the women’s race, an established Aussie was predicted to win but was upset in an amazing sprint finish. In the men’s event, one of the sport’s all-time greats redeemed his Sydney disappointment.
WOMEN’S REVIEW – AUGUST 25, 2004The women’s race started as generally predicted with Loretta Harrop of Australia and the Americans Sheila Taormina and Barbara Lindquist leading the swim from early on. After Lindquist was dropped from the lead bike group, she was joined by teammate Susan Williams who used her incredible cycling skills to cut the gap. By the final lap, Harrop broke away and parlayed that into a 20-second lead on the run, ahead of three Americans.
Leading the chase group out of transition was Kate Allen from Austria, followed by a stream of others. Harrop continued to look comfortable despite the 30 degree heat and maintained her lead through to the final lap. By the closing stages, it looked like Harrop had the gold wrapped up, but Allen had other plans. In a stunning turn of events, Harrop had the finish line in sight but Allen blew past the exhausted Aussie to win the gold by seven seconds. Coming across in the bronze medal position was an ecstatic Williams.
MEN’S REVIEW – AUGUST 26, 2004Despite the best efforts of the top swimmers, the bulk of the field remained in touch with the lead through the first stage of the race. A large group of athletes took off on the 40km bike stage within seconds of each other. Midway through the difficult five-lap bike course, a decisive breakaway group including New Zealand’s Bevan Docherty and Hamish Carter, Switzerland’s Sven Riederer and Oliver Marceau; and Frenchman Frederic Belaubre all pulled away from the main pack. This powerful group worked well together and built a significant lead.
By the second transition the six leaders had a 30-second advantage of the rest of the field, and took that into the 10km run. Midway through the group was slowly whittled down to Carter, Docherty and Riederer and in the closing stages, Riederer dropped off the pace. Carter then kicked into another gear, leaving a spent Docherty trailing in his wake. An elated Carter went on to break the tape for gold, anchoring a gold-silver New Zealand performance with Docherty coming in second. Riederer just held on for bronze, ahead of a charging Greg Bennett from Australia who finished fourth.

BEIJING 2008 OLYMPIC GAMES
The stunning Ming Tomb Reservoir, just outside of central Beijing, played host to triathlon’s third appearance in the Olympic Games. And again, the races were a mix of upsets, with the men’s race again coming down to an electrifying sprint finish, and favourites securing the gold.
WOMEN’S REVIEW – AUGUST 18, 2008The women lined up on the Ming Tomb Reservoir course in scorching heat, and all eyes were on Australia’s Emma Snowsill and Portugal’s Vanessa Fernandes. The pair were two the greatest ever female triathletes, and it was favoured that one would add that coveted Olympic gold to a set that already included World Championship and multiple World Cup wins. However neither stood out in the first two legs, the USA’s Laura Bennett (USA) led the swim and helped lead out the first pack on the bike, but there wasn’t a huge break between the contenders on the tough 40km bike leg.
But it was clear from the second transition that it was going to be Snowsill’s day, as she completely crushed the field over the 10km run. There were gasps from around the world when Snowsill ran down the wrong side of the barricade near the end of the third lap, but she quickly hurdled back over it and continued on to the finish line, where she ran home to gold by a whopping 66 seconds, the biggest margin yet in Olympic history. Fernandes finished strongly for silver, and Australia’s Emma Moffatt claimed bronze to make it a brilliant day for Australia.
MEN’S REVIEW – AUGUST 19, 2008Reigning World Champion Javier Gomez went in as favourite, but as seen before in Olympic history, the way the men’s race unfolded kept everyone guessing right until the end. While the pack stayed together in the swim, the tough and technical bike course saw a break. Mexico’s Francisco Serrano, Luxemboug’s Dirk Bockel, and Belgium’s Axel Zeebroek pushed off the front and while Serrano dropped off, Bockel and Zeebroek took almost a minute lead into the run. It didn’t prove enough to keep off the sport’s top runners as a young Brit, Alistair Brownlee, helped to reel them in.
Spain’s Ivan Rana then attacked on the hill that lead back to the reservoir and only Gomez, Brownlee, Germany’s Jan Frodeno, Canada’s Simon Whitfield and New Zealand’s Bevan Docherty went with him. But Rana faded, followed by Brownlee and Whitfield, seemingly leaving the medals to Gomez, Docherty and Frodeno. However Whitfield turned on his incredible finishing kick, regained touch and in the final 500 metres, took the lead. But in a thrilling final finishing chute rush, it was Frodeno who found the extra push to rocket past Whitfield and claim Olympic gold.
It was, incredibly, his first ever ITU win. Whitfield held on for silver and Docherty for bronze – which was the second Olympic medal for each of them.

LONDON 2012 OLYMPIC GAMES
Hyde Park was the site of triathlon’s fourth appearance in the Olympic Games. Both the men’s and women’s teams featured strong teams & the crowds poured out in the hundreds of thousands to cheer on the athletes around Serpentine Lake.
WOMEN’S REVIEW – AUGUST 4, 2012Although a group got away out of the swim in the Serpentine Lake, coming out of the water Nicola Spirig saw she had most of the main contenders around her and knew she was in with a chance. Quickly riding to the front of her group she helped them bridge-up and did plenty of work to ensure no breakaways stuck. It was almost at the end of the 43km bike course though that the first problem arose – a cramp.
Spirig’s original plan had been to stick with the group until 200 metres to go, where she would unleash her powerful sprint. But her legs weren’t dealing well with the changes of speed in the run so she ran ahead with 500metres to go. As Spirig inched closer to the finish, so did Sweden’s Lisa Norden to her. With an eye on the screen in front of her, Spirig could see Norden closing.
The two women burst into the tape at the exact same time. The result would be decided by photo finish, but both women already had an inkling – it was Spirig that had the edge over Norden. In all the fuss of the finish line, it was Australia’s Erin Densham who finished strongly to collect bronze. It marked a extraordinary comeback for the Australian, who underwent surgery.
MEN’S REVIEW – AUGUST 7, 2012Heading into an Olympic triathlon race at home in Britain, Alistair Brownlee and Jonathan Brownlee had finished first and second in the previous year’s ITU World Triathlon Series. Spain’s Javier Gomez was thought to be the only person that might be able to break their dominance.
Gomez and both Brownlees were in the lead pack out of the swim. While the majority of the men entered T2 together, the British brothers and Gomez immediately poured on a pace that put more than 50 metres between themselves and the rest of the competition on the run. Drama unfolded as the younger Brownlee brother was forced to serve a 15-second penalty for a transition infraction at the start of the final lap, pushing him further back.
But up ahead it was Alistair who was sending the hundreds of thousands by the Serpentine into a frenzy. Brownlee slowed to pick up a British flag and jogged across the finish line to claim gold. Gomez ran across next, avenging the podium he missed in Beijing to garner silver, giving Spain its first triathlon medal. Despite the penalty, Jonathan Brownlee was still well clear of the field and ran across to collect bronze.

STATISTICS
RIO 2016 | TRIATHLON MEDIA GUIDE176 RIO 2016 | TRIATHLON MEDIA GUIDE 177
NATIONAL FEDERATION STATS
A total of 42 NOCs had qualified spots at the triathlon competition for Rio 2016, the highest number ever for triathlon at an Olympic Games.
Among the 42 NOCs this year, six have qualified a spot for the first time in the history of triathlon at the Olympic Games, including: Azerbaijan, Barbados, Israel, Jordan, Norway and Puerto Rico.
The eight NOCs that were able to qualify the maximum of three women were Australia, Canada, Spain, Great Britain, Germany, Japan, Russia, and the United States.
The eight NOCs that have qualified the maximum of three men are Australia, Spain, France, Great Britain, Mexico, Portugal, Russia and the United States
HISTORIC STATS
Anja Dittmer (GER), Hunter Kemper (USA) and Simon Whitfield (CAN) are the only current 4 time Olympians. This year, Ainhoa Murua (ESP), Hirokatsu Tayama (JPN), Nicola Spirig (SUI) and Sven Riederer (SUI) will join the club.
Australia, Great Britain and United States have had 23 entries each in triathlon Olympic history and will each be sending 6 athletes each this time. No Federation has sent 3 men and 3 women to every Olympic Games.
A total of 12 countries have won medals with seven taking Gold. Only Switzerland have won multiple Gold medals.
Australia have the most Olympic triathlon medals with 5 medals from men’s and women’s races – 1 gold, 2 silver, 2 bronze.
Australia and New Zealand are the only countries to have a medal of each color.
No triathletes have won two Olympic gold medals. Could Nicola Spirig and Alistair Brownlee change that history in Rio?
Four women and three men on the Olympic start lists have won medals in previous Olympic Games – Nicola Spirig, Lisa Norden, Emma Moffatt, Erin Densham on the women’s side & Alistair Brownlee, Jonathan Brownlee & Sven Reiderer on the men’s side.
53 of the 110 men and women racing in the Olympics have competed in at least one Olympic Games before.
BUNCH OF STATS

Five of the Olympic gold medals have gone to athletes wearing start numbers 30-39.
Both of Bevan Docherty’s medals came while wearing the number 27.
The lowest number to take home a medal is 16.
Eight different athletes have worn the same number in multiple Games

ITU RACE STATS
On the Olympic start lists, Dmitry Polyanskiy (RUS) has more WTS race starts than anybody else with 53. Ai Ueda (JPN) is the most experienced on the women’s side with 51. They have also done more ITU races than any other athlete with Polyanskiy doing 148 and Ueda 169 in their careers.
A total of 21 athletes toeing he line in Rio have won a WTS race, and 37 have a WTS podium.
Alistair Brownlee has won more triathlons than any man lining up. Of 65 race starts, he’s won 35 for a 53.8% winning record. In the WTS, he’s started 32 times and won 21 times & been on the podium 25 times making his WTS winning average 65.6%!
Gwen Jorgensen is the most successful woman lining up. She has started 65 times and won 24 of those races. In the WTS, it’s 17 wins from 35 stars. Even more impressive, she’s been on the podium 22 of those times at a WTS race making her WTS winning average a speedy 48.6% & her podium performance at 78%!
Aihona Murua (ESP) is the oldest woman on the start list at 38.
Sven Riederer (SUI) is the oldest man on the start list at 35.
Cassandrea Beaugrand (FRA) is the youngest triathlete in Rio at just 19 years old. Tyler Mislawchuck (CAN) is the youngest man at 21 & he’ll celebrate his 22nd birthday just one day after his race in Rio!
Gwen Jorgensen owns the fastest 5km run split in WTS history with 15:31 at the 2013 World Triathlon Hamburg. She also has the fastest 10k at 31:41 at the 2013 World Triathlon Stockholm.
Mario Mola has the fastest 5km run split of 13:55 in World Triathlon history, done at the 2015 World Triathlon Hamburg.
Alistair Brownlee owns the fastest 10km run split in WTS history having run 28:43 at the 2009 WTS London race.
WINNING MARGINS, SPLITS AND DEFICITS** **Please note records are not absolute with different conditions and lengths of courses.
The closest finish in the men’s Olympic race has been six seconds, which was won by Jan Frodeno (GER) over Simon Whitfield (CAN) in Beijing 2008.
Interestingly, the largest winning margin in the men’s triathlon is only 13 seconds, which was Simon Whitfield (CAN) over Stefan Vuckovic (GER) in Sydney 2000.
The largest winning margin in the women’s Olympic triathlon was Emma Snowsill (AUS) over Vanessa Fernandes (POR) with a whopping 67 seconds.
The closest finish in the women’s Olympic race was in London between Nicola Spirig (SUI) and Lisa Norden (SWE). It was so close it came down to a photo finish to determine who won.
In order of Olympic year, the men’s winning margins have been 13, 8, 6 and 11 seconds making the average winning margin 9.5 seconds.
In order of Olympic year, the women’s winning margins have been 2, 7, 67 and 0 so average is 19 seconds.
In 2004, Kate Allen (AUT) was 173 seconds down coming out of T2 and went on to win.
Simon Whitfield (CAN) was 68 seconds down in Sydney leaving T2 and in 25th place and went on to win.
For the women, 173 seconds is the largest deficit anyone has ever overcome to make the podium, much less win.
For the men, 68 seconds is the largest deficit to be overcome and make the podium.
Being a long way behind in the swim doesn’t seem to be a problem the average deficit of all gold medal winners out of the swim is 40 seconds. For the men the average deficit out of the water for gold medal winners is 22.5 seconds, for the women the average is 57.5.
Lucy Hall (GBR) has the fastest female swim with 18:16 at London, which was with a wetsuit.
RIO 2016 | TRIATHLON MEDIA GUIDE180
Richard Varga (SVK) has the fastest male swim with a 16:56 at London and the only person to break 17 mins for the swim, done with a wetsuit.
Non wetsuit records are 18:37 for the women (Loretta Harrop and Sheila Taormina) in Athens and 17:49 for Andy Potts (USA) in Athens.
Bike records are 57:17 for the men by Conrad Stolz (RSA) and Nicola Spirig (SUI) with 1:03:54. That’s an average speed of 41.9km/h for the 40km for Conrad Stolz or 26mph.
Alistair Brownlee (GBR) has the fastest run split of 29:07 in London and Emma Snowsill (AUS) ran 33:16 in Beijing.
Four men have run under 30 minutes at the Olympics, which all happened at London
Olympic record finish times are 01:58:26 for the women (Emma Snowsill, Beijing) and 01:46:25 for the men (Alilstair Brownlee, London).
A time of 1:59 seems to be the magic key to get on a podium for the women. Six women have ducked under 2 hours in the Olympics, and that has always been good enough to make the podium (Sarah True clocked 2 hours exactly in London and was 4th).

HOW DO ATHLETES QUALIFY FOR THE OLYMPICS?In the years leading up to the Olympic Games the ITU sets stringent qualification criteria for National Federations and National Olympic Committees. The NOCs determine their athlete qualification parameters, often involving strong performances at specific races, such as a test event or a World Triathlon Series.
HOW DO ATHLETES PICK THEIR START POSITIONS? Selecting the start position is a blind selection process, which takes place at the athlete briefing. The first 10 athletes ranked in the Olympic Qualification List go first.
HOW ARE RACE NUMBERS AS-SIGNED? Race numbers are assigned at random to the National Federation.
WHEN DOES AN ATHLETE HAVE TO SERVE TIME IN THE PENALTY BOX? A time penalty is served in a penalty box situated on the run course. It can be served on any lap of the run but must be served before the end of the race. The most common reasons for a 15-second time penalty are i) false start, ii) failure to rack bike correctly, iii) mounting the bike before the mount line or dismounting after the dismount line, iv) storing equipment (e.g bike helmet or wetsuit) outside the designated area in transition.
WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON RULE INFRINGEMENTS? An athlete can be penalised for rule transgressions either with a time penalty or disqualification. Disqualification is used for severe rule infringements such as unsportsmanlike behaviour, deliberate contact with another athlete and abusive language to an official.
FAQ - IMPORTANT RULES
THE BIKE COURSE IS 41.6KM BUT AN OLYMPIC-DISTANCE COURSE IS 40KM. WHAT ARE THE RULES ON COURSE VARIATIONS? In a standard distance course (also called Olympic distance), the original distances may vary up to 10%. This does not take into account a situation where a discipline may need to be shortened or cancelled due to safety issues.
HOW CAN ATHLETES QUALIFY TO COMPETE IN THE SERIES?National Federations (NF) will enter athletes and the start list will based on the current athlete’s ranking. Each NF will be allowed a maximum of six athletes with the host NF given a maximum of eight spots. While a maximum of 65 men and 65 women will make up the Elite category with up to 75 men and 75 women in the Grand Final, only 55 men and women will line up at the Olympics.
HOW DO ATHLETES QUALIFY FOR THE GRAND FINAL?Athletes qualify through a detailed qualification process, which takes into account his or her world championship ranking, ITU points standing and respective continental championships.
HOW CAN THE PUBLIC FOLLOW THEIR FAVOURITE ATHLETES?The public may keep track of all their favourite triathletes at www.triathlon.org where all athlete bios, current rankings and event times may be found as well as follow on facebook, twitter, Instagram, snapchat and youtube at @worldtriathlon.
HOW DOES ITU IMPLEMENT ANTI-DOPING STRATEGIES?The ITU has accepted the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) Code to help keep the sport of triathlon clean; the ITU Anti-Doping Rules are in compliance with the World Anti-Doping Code. Please visit www.triathlon.org/about/anti-doping for more information.
