The Shawnee State Volleyball Team is not looking to rebuild this year, but the under-classman dominated team is looking to continue their success despite losing five start-ers from last year’s 35-12 squad. In their first season in the Mid-South Conference the Bears’ captured the East Division regular season title and the MSC Tournament title and Shawnee State is looking to continue their momentum into the 2011 season. This isn’t going to be an easy task as the Bears are looking to replace four seniors from last year’s team, including All-Americans Jami Turrill, Heather Koehler and Haley Halcomb as well as defensive specialist Tiffany Dailey. The four make up the pro-grams most successful class as they boast a career record of 122-37 and earned three consecutive bids to the NAIA National Tournament. Also, missing from last year’s squad is defensive specialist Sam Veach and all-conference middle hitter Kim Rosen. This year’s team boasts eight returners from last year’s 35-12 team to go along with nine newcomers. Leading the Bears this season is senior Shaye Berry and junior Alex Pohl, the only starters returning to the hardwood. Berry, a local player from Minford, Ohio stepped up her game last season to earn a part-time starting spot and averaged 1.12 kills per game. Pohl, a native of Loveland, Ohio led the Bears with 166 blocks on the season and earned Honorable Mention All-MSC. Also returning to the front row is junior Janine Grey and Megan Bernthold. Grey played in 89 games for the Bears and averaged 1.27 kills per game. Returning defensively for the Bears are sophomores Kirsti Yates, Carly Mazza and Liz Miller and junior Jessica Winkelman. Yates and Mazza, saw action in the back row last year, averaging 2.18 and 1.62 digs per game. Miller, last year’s backup setter will also see action in the back row this year as a de-fensive specialist. Winkelman returns to the floor this year after sitting out last year with an injury. In 2009, she averaged 2.64 digs per game. New to the program this year are three transfers and six freshmen. Transfers include senior defensive specialist Kelly Schumacher from Otterbein College, junior outside hitter Holly Tobias from Edison Community College and sophomore setter Hannah Gephart from West Virginia State. Schumacher transferred in after playing three years for the Cardinals. Tobias played two years at Edison CC where she earned 1
stTeam
OCCAC and all-region honors. Gephart transferred in after leading the Yellow Jackets last year averaging 6.14 assists per game. Shawnee State’s freshman class boasts a handful of talent that will immediately see action for the Bears. Leading the freshman class is 6-3 middle hitter Tiffany Jackson. Jackson was named 1
stTeam all-conference
while attending Williamstown High School, where she helped guide her team to a State Championship. Joining Jackson at the net is middle hitter Kelsey Bielanow, out-side hitters Abbi Morrow and Paige Zelich and right side hitter Devan Scarberry. Freshman Courtney Rowe is the final newcomer on the Bears’ team. Rowe, who will contend for time in the setter position, comes from a very successful program at East-ern High School, where she was a three-time SOC and District Player of the Year.

Also new to the program is interim Head Coach Susan Shelton. Shelton takes over the helm of the program after Kristy Kamer resigned in the summer. Shelton served as the Bears’ assistant coach last season and looks to step in to continue the Bears’ success and lead the Bears’ to another NAIA National Tournament appearance.
Shawnee State will face some tough competition this year. The Bears’ will try to de-fend their conference title, as schools like Georgetown College and Campbellsville University look to revenge last years’ losses to the Bears. Campbellsville handed the Bears their only conference loss last season, but fell to the Bears in the conference tournament semifinals. Shawnee State defeated Georgetown in the regular season in four sets last year and knocked off the MSC powerhouse in the tournament finals to take the conference’s bid to the NAIA Tournament. Shawnee State’s non-conference schedule is also difficult as it includes Indiana Tech, Indiana Wesleyan, Indiana East, Madonna and Malone all of which cracked the NAIA Top 25 last season or received votes. Shawnee State opens the season at the Grace Invitational on Thursday, August 18 and Friday, August 19. Shawnee State opens up the 2011 season at home on Sep-tember 6 as they face old conference rival Cedarville. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.

On April 24, 1995, the presidents of member schools, meeting in Nashville, Tenn.,
formed the Mid-South Conference to serve as the competitive base for their entire
sports programs. The move effectively merged the athletic pursuits of similar institu-
tions. The conference is unique in its broad based athletic competition for men and
women, offering championships in 15 sports.
The presidents of each school serves on the Board of Directors which directly over-
sees the conference and the office of the commissioner. This administrative "hands
on" role of each school's president is unique among athletic conferences and ensures
a proper balance in the academic pursuits of student athletes.
True to its commitment to broad based athletic competition, the Mid-South Conference
recognizes the value of extensive campus based sports programs that maximize the
opportunities for athletic competition among their students.

About the NAIA The purpose of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) is to promote the education
and development of students through intercollegiate athletic participation. Member institutions, although
varied and diverse, share a common commitment to high standards and to the principle that participa-
tion in athletics serves as an integral part of the total educational process.
The NAIA embraces the concept of the student and recognizes the importance of the individuality of
each member institution, the value of the conferences and Association of Independent Institutions
(A.I.I.) structure, and the benefits of membership in a national association.
The NAIA supports gender equity. Gender equity is an atmosphere and reality where fair distribution of
overall athletic opportunity and resources, proportionate to enrollment, are available to women and men,
and where no student-athlete, coach or athletics administrator is discriminated against in any way in the
athletics program. That is to say, an athletics program is gender-equitable when the men's sports pro-
gram would be pleased to accept as its own the overall participation opportunities and resources cur-
rently allocated to the women's sports program and vice versa.
Advancing sport with innovative change The NAIA has 50,000 student-athletes participating at nearly 300 member colleges and universities
throughout the United States and Canada. Divided into 25 conferences and the Association of Inde-
pendent Institutions (A.I.I.), the NAIA offers 23 championships in 13 sports.
Since 1937, the NAIA has continued a long tradition of pushing the envelope and making a positive dif-
ference in the lives of students, coaches and parents. The Champions of Character program is the lat-
est cutting-edge addition to the NAIA’s proud history of innovation.
Through Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every student-
athlete, coach, official and spectator are committed to the true spirit of competition through the five core
values: respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship.

changing needs of business, industry, education, and society through its diversified degree
programs. Recognizing the importance of knowledge, values, and cultural enrichment, Shaw-
nee State University is committed to providing higher education that fosters excellence in oral

arts and humanities, mathematical sciences, natural sciences, social sciences, teacher educa-
tion, business administration, industrial and engineering technologies, and health sciences, at
one of the lowest tuition rate among Ohio public universities and reduced in-district rates to
eligible students in Kentucky; Shawnee State University is the university of opportunity. Enroll-
ment at Ohio’s newest four-year university is typically around 4,300.
The only public university in Ohio located on the banks of the Ohio River, Shawnee State Uni-
versity features a beautifully-landscaped 52-acre campus featuring 21 buildings including the
Advanced Technology Center that features one of only 50 Digistar II planetariums in the world;
a three-story library featuring computers, Internet access, and thousands of books, CDs, gov-
ernment documents, and periodicals; the 102,000 square foot Vern Riffe Center for the Arts
featuring a 1,139 seat Main Theater; the James A. Rhodes Athletic Center that features weight
rooms, racquetball courts, gymnasium, a dance classroom, and a junior Olympic-size swim-
ming pool; and the Children’s Learning Center, a facility that serves as a learning center for
the children of students/faculty/staff/community members and a lab school for teacher educa-
tion students at SSU.
Shawnee State University has a rich tradition of success in athletics. A member of the National
Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, SSU has participated in 24 National Championships in
six of 11 sponsored sports. The SSU women’s basketball team won the NAIA Division II Na-
tional Championship on March 16, 1999. A member of the American Mideast Conference

In establishing the Center for International Programs and Activities (CIPA) Shawnee actively
seeks to attract a growing number of international students to study at our university; has sis-
ter-institution affiliations with universities in Germany, China, Spain, and Morocco; and offers
on a regular basis many travel/study abroad courses to an ever increasing choice of destina-
tion such as Greece, Britain, Spain, and Ireland in order to increase global awareness among
its students. Some of these courses are funded by the Hodgden Travel Fund and many others
are funded, in part, by CIPA.
Students come to SSU for many reasons including a low student/teacher ratio, more than $1.5
million in scholarships, and proven programs that ensure success in the classroom and in find-
ing jobs.
