Summer GuideHow to Use this GuideThis guide will give you an overview of the features and activities planned for this season in Delaware’s 17 state parks. Updates will be available on our website at destateparks.com. Program information is available at destateparks.com/programs.

    • Most programs require pre-registration. Many require pre-payment. Reservation numbers are listed for each park.

    • Parks are open daily, from 8 a.m. until sunset all year, except Fort Delaware (see p. 18). Park office and nature center hours vary; visit destateparks.com for hours at specific locations.

    • Park entrance fees (charged through November 30) are not included in program fees.

    • Annual passes are available at any park office, at five retail locations, or online at destateparks.com/fees. Income from annual pass sales, entry fees and other user fees goes directly to Delaware State Parks to help manage more than 26,000 acres of park land.

Experience nature and recreation in the heart of the city through Wilmington State Parks, an urban retreat along the Brandywine River that has fostered family memories and traditions for generations.

Did you know geology played an important role in the development of Wilmington? If you stand on the Market Street Bridge in Brandywine Park and look north, you will see the rocky Piedmont plain. If you look to the south, you will see the flatter Coastal plain. The place where these two plains meet is called the Fall Line. Erosion from passing rivers created waterfalls, and the power of this falling water allowed for the development of mills and a settlement.

Geology is also a prominent feature in our parks! If you walk along the Northern Delaware Greenway Trail near the Brandywine River in Alapocas Run, you will pass rocky outcroppings. These outcroppings are metamorphic rocks called Brandywine Blue Gneiss, which are composed of quartz, feldspar, pyroxene, and magnetite. The quarried Gneiss was used in the construction of the Rockford Tower and in buildings throughout the city.

In addition to many saltwater recreational opportunities, DSSP’s six miles of wild ocean and bay shoreline and the dynamic Indian River Inlet provide a backdrop for interpreting natural history and maritime heritage.

Built in 1876, the Indian River Life-Saving Station is the only original Life-Saving Station that is open to the public as a museum, and still in its original location. From 1876 until 1915, when it became a U.S. Coast Guard Station, the Indian River crew responded to 62 shipwrecks and saved 419 lives.

The average depth of the inland bays is only three feet, making it an excellent natural nursery for marine life. The bays provide a place where hundreds of fish and invertebrate species can begin their lives without the threat of being eaten by large predators.

At one point in 1863, Pea Patch Island had a population of around 11,000 people, making it the second largest city in Delaware

    Trap Pond State Park

For nearly all living memory, Trap Pond has been a place for leisure, recreation, and enjoyment of natural beauty. However, it is important to remember that the area spent much more time being an industrial area than a protected resource. From the 1700s through the mid-1800s, the area around Trap Pond was mainly industrial. Operations such as iron forges, charcoal kilns, sawmills, and logging surrounded the pond. Through a series of fortuitous events and the dedication of a few conservation-minded individuals, Trap Pond has become the place we know and love – a place where future generations can take in relaxation, natural-resource based recreation, and an ethereal sense of solitude.
