While there’s a lot to be said for escaping it all and jetting off tothe sun, this issue of Trend is a true showcase of the manydelights to be discovered here on our own shores.

Although they may look like they could have been taken froma Mediterranean holiday brochure, the inky blue skies and thegolden sands in our amazing fashion spreads were shot only afew miles from Aberdeen.

If you fancy a change of scenery in another coastal location, enter our competition for a chance to win an overnight stay atthe luxurious five star Westin Turnberry resort, where you’llenjoy breathtaking views out to the Isle of Arran, Ailsa Craigand the Irish Sea.

This issue of Trend also sees us visiting the idyllic KinnairdEstate set in woodland in the Tay Valley, where we foundtranquillity and luxury within its intimate grand country house.

If a city break is more up your street, flick through to page 34for a chance to win return Eastern Airways flights fromAberdeen to the shopping Mecca of Leeds and two nights atthe luxurious Radisson SAS hotel. A year’s free hairdressing attop salon TONY&GUY is also up for grabs.

As ever, this issue is packed with news from the North-east’sown vibrant retail scene, and there’s plenty of food snippets towhet the appetite of discerning diners.

Until the August issue, enjoy Trend.

Best wishes,Niki Tennant Editor &Pauline Fraser Assistant Editor

Dear readers,

Can you believe this is already Issue 5 ofTrend, and ‘our baby’ is growing andblossoming beyond our wildest expectations. We think we have found a winning formulawith Trend and the positive feedback wereceive from you, our readers, and from ouradvertisers and distributors reiterates thiswith each and every issue.

Never being ones to rest on our laurels, we felt confident enough to buck the Trend with this issue. And don't we havethe WOW! factor in the shape of our coverboy, Ross Whyte!

Since day one, we’ve taken everyopportunity to roll up our sleeves andbecome involved in the exciting editorialproduction of Trend. It was a cold, blusteryApril day on Balmedie beach when wefilmed our sensational beachwear fashionshots. Wrapped in thermals and Ugg bootsand armed with flasks of tea, we looked onas our plucky models peeled off their layersto parade beachwear on a breathtakingcoastal location that has in the last yearreceived its well deserved share ofworldwide exposure. We had nothing butadmiration for their professionalism - and wasn't it worth it?

Keep talking, emailing and writing to us - weneed you to maintain Trend’s proud success.

SPRING/SUMMER 2008COLLECTIONS ARRIVING WEEKLY

Faking it tried and tested. There are loadsof fake tans on the market but which onesshould you be grabbing off the shelf? Well, here is a quick guide to the best productsfor sun-kissed skin.

> WORDS BY FIONA SMITH

FIONA SMITHAccomplished make-upartist Fiona Smith trainedat the Chanel Make-upAcademy in London. She has been workingfully-trained for three

and a half years nationally andinternationally, including a spell workingin Moscow. [email protected]

After months of being hidden under layers of clothing it’slikely your whole body is in need of an invigorating boostbefore you bare all.

So let’s start with the basics. If you need a quick fix to sloughoff all that dull, dry skin then I would suggest a 20 minuteSalt and Oil Body Scrub. This nourishing body exfoliationuses sea salts and skin softening oils which will leave youtingling, as well as smooth and toned all over.

If your winter skin is in need of a major overhaul then abody wrap will work wonders. If you’re heading off to thesun then the Skin Hydrator Body Wrap will protect andprepare your skin from head-to-toe. The treatment beginswith lymphatic skin brushing and full exfoliation before yourskin is treated with marine mud, ESPA skin toning oils andnourishing body cream. This treatment is also a great skinbooster after exposure to the sun.

To top it all off prepare your tootsies with a Foot and Nailtreatment and a luxury pedicure.

For a healthy, natural glow we’ve also just introduced oneof the most up-to-date St Tropez spray tans which can beaccurately applied in just ten minutes! An initial spray is£30 with a top-up four to seven days later for £15. Afterthis you will be the most gorgeous sun-kissed goddess in the North-east.

Summer skin tonicsTemperatures are rising and it’s time to ditch the winterwoollies and let your skin see the light of day.

> WORDS BY DAWN PATERSON AT THE HOUSEWith the arrival of summer, we girls havegone to great lengths to have our hair highlighted, have a manicure, and evenhave our bits waxed in preparation for theseason when we bare all.

> WORDS BY JULIE LILLIE

Best foot forwardthis summer

However, have we given any thought to our poor feet thathave been trussed up in boots and sturdy shoes all winter? The following tips will help you achieve a well turned heel tolast all summer long.

Nail trimming - keep nails short, following the natural shape ofthe nail, finishing off by filing the nail with a metal file or anemery board. This will keep sharp edges at bay preventingingrown nails, and gives a neat finish to the nail. If you areusing a varnish, check the nails for chips and cracks and touchthem up, or alternatively, remove the varnish and start again.

Hard Skin – this is most commonly found around the heelsand on the ball of the foot, which - as well as looking unsightly- can cause pain. It should be removed by a professional usinga scalpel. It can then be kept at bay by using a foot file on a dryfoot every week.

Finally, feet (like hands) really benefit from regularapplication of cream morning and night, to keep skin softand supple all summer.

My personal favourites are; the Body Shop peppermint footlotion, L’Occitane lavender foot cream, E45 foot and heelcream, and CCS cream available from Boots.

My personal favourites are; the Body Shop peppermint footlotion, L’Occitane lavender foot cream, E45 foot and heelcream, and CCS cream available from Boots.

As its patient list continues to grow, sotoo does demand for the practice’sdental implants expertise. As practicemanager Ainslie Scott explained, thetreatment can be life changing forpatients who are missing one or moreteeth and have, until now, relied oncrowns or dentures.

“The treatment also restores people’sconfidence in the ability to smile. Thosewho make the leap to dental implantstell us that it’s quite a transformation.”

Jan Leiper provides advanced aesthetic skin treatments to clients,of all ages, in both professional and confidential surroundings, tohelp them achieve their desired facial rejuvenation experience.

Although Jan offers many injectable options her new aesthetictreatment for facial volume loss is Sculptra™.

Why Sculptra™?In time your skin can lose its fullness and youthful appearance, this is a direct result of the ageing process. Skin can becomethinner and lose elasticity causing wrinkles and deep lines toappear. Fat tissue which maintains the fullness of your face alsodepletes resulting in a thinner, narrow shape which can makeyou look older than your years.

Sculptra™ is injected into the skin and it is designed for use in anumber of areas on your face. It works by stimulating the buildup of your body’s own collagen and can help by smoothingdeep lines and wrinkles and also by returning lost volume togive you a natural-looking fuller face.

Sculptra™ has a discreet approach which allows a gradualeffect to occur over 2 to 3 treatments resulting in plumperfacial tissue after 6 weeks with no need for pre-allergy testing.Clinical studies have shown that the results of Sculptra™ canlast for more than 3 years.

There could be no greater endorsement for David Lloyd health andfitness club’s All Stars programme than that from Scotland’s homegrown tennis sensation, Andy Murray.

The programme, for three to 12-year-olds, is unique to David LloydLeisure. Andy was involved in the design of the programme andhas taken a lot of drills and games that he used in his early yearson court with his mum and mentor, Judy. These exercises aredesigned to ensure each child has every opportunity to maximisetheir potential and most importantly have fun whilst learning allabout the game. “There’s a lot of potential among the youngplayers here in Aberdeen,” explained Mark Malcolm, who is incharge of David Lloyd’s junior programme at the city club. “Ifchildren start playing by the age seven, there’s a fair chance wecould produce a good player who could go on to represent theNorth of Scotland in mini county events.”

Tennis all stars also helps develop your child’s social and physicalskills. The programme also contains elements that promoteteamwork, fair play and sportsmanship.

After leaving school he worked for anaward-winning butcher in Stonehaven for14 years and now he has returned to thetrade after buying established businessJ. Barber and Son in the city’s Chattan Place.

Since taking over the butcher shopAndy has introduced a new range ofproducts in addition to the traditionalgoods which are popular with the store’sregular customers.

To keep up with today’s hectic lifestylesAndy and his team has also created a

selection of time-saving solutions for busyworkers including prepared stir-fry,marinades, extra lean sausages, home-made pies and barbecue products.

All the products are prepared in-store,where they only use the best localproduce. Andy said: “The shop onlytakes in the very best of produce fromlocal suppliers across the North-east.There is no compromise in quality as Iwouldn’t have anything on the counterthat I wouldn’t eat myself. All the meatsupplied to the shop has full traceabilityfrom the pastures of Aberdeenshire, myshop and straight to the customer’s table.”

There is a great range of products at thisindependent butcher, from Chocolate

In addition, there are also cheeses, pate, fresh vegetables, salmon and free rangeeggs, to name but a few items. Andycontinued: “We’re trying to make peoplemore aware of the superb service thattheir independent, local butcher can offer. Our strengths are not just the quality ofour products but also our superb rangeand friendly customer service.”

Jim Barber worked alongside Andy for agood few months before handing overthe 45-year old business into a veryreliable pair of hands equallycommitted to providing an exceptionalservice to the local community formany years to come.

There is a great range of products at thisindependent butcher, from Chocolate

and Champagne Fondle dessert rightthrough to prime quality steaks andfresh fish.

RESTAURANT REVIEW

Dinner ReviewThe clue as to the focus of the restaurant is in the name!

Warm desert colours and subtle lighting give a goodfeel to the space; there is plenty of room betweentables so you don’t feel that you are intruding onother diners' conversations.

The restaurant quickly filled up on our Thursday nightvisit. Service remained attentive throughout and wewere especially impressed with the dedicated winesteward who was very knowledgeable and helpful inrecommending wines from an interesting and wellthought out list.

A glass of fragrant, ripe, citrus and brioche inspiredChampagne Maillart Brut NV helped us to decide onthe starters. Next to me an intensely flavoured lobsterbisque (£7.50) received plenty of praise and acrossthe table, a smooth chicken Liver parfait was wellmatched with a red onion and plum marmalade (£5.75).

My lobster and crab cakes were crisp with plenty ofshell fish and the accompanying chilli jam had a realkick (£8.50). As there were three, I successfullybartered one for one of my friend's king scallopswhich were plump and perfectly seared set a top alobster mousse (£9.50).

A rich, full-on, exotically fruity Pinot Gris from GustaveLorentz, Alsace was a winning combination (£23.00).Its intensity and off-dry finish complemented theparfait, seafood, the chilli and the sweeter elementsof our dishes.

Our main courses arrived almost too quickly. A deliciousred fruit, spice and raisin driven Chateau Musar 2000from the Lebanon was decanted for us (£36.00).

Apart from a generously proportioned grilledswordfish with mango and chilli salsa and limebutter (£16.50), it was Surf and Turf all round(£30.00). The local Scottish beef is aged for aminimum of 28 days. The fillet steak was sliced, served with a jus and was full flavoured and tender, the accompanying half lobster simply grilled withlemon and parsley butter. It was a real treat.

I tend to do cheese instead of pudding but whenfaced with a dessert menu that listed all my favouritepuddings, I felt that it was right to order for everyoneand then insist on sharing! Along came our wineman with a chill bucket of dessert wines and tawnyport. His recommendations to go with each of ourchosen desserts were spot on. The desserts have aretro feel to them and a lemon meringue pie servedwarm with the crispest of pastry was a star (£5.95).We also enjoyed crème brulee (£5.95) and bakedalaska (£5.95). A selection of Scottish cheeses(£6.95) followed by coffee finished off a veryenjoyable evening.

Lunch ReviewSpace and light greet you as you stepinto the Foyer at HMT. Coffee, cake andsandwiches are available downstairsand upstairs the restaurant offers viewsover Union Terrace gardens. Sleekdesign, red walls and wood bringwarmth into the space.

The lunch time menu offers lighteroptions such as soup, this day’s choicebeing a warming, creamy root vegetableone and bruschetta. The menus changeevery few weeks and on our visit thenew one was just being rolled out.

To help ponder our choices, wemunched on a good selection of warmorganic bread with olive oil and sometop notch olives (£3.50)

The wine list is well priced and hassome interesting choices with fiveavailable by the glass. We went for thesole rosé on the list - Pleno Garnacha2006 (£14.50) from Navarra in Spain.

With plenty of red fruit it was just drywith a savoury edge.

Main courses arrived and were generousin size. My cajun spiced plaice fillets werecrisply fried and perfectly cooked and camewith a robust chorizo, tomato and broadbean gumbo with a garlic aioli. (£8.95)

Luckily, my dining companions like toshare so I was also able to sample acomforting, moreish creamy pasta dishwith peas and smoked haddock (£7.95)and a tasty twist on goats’ cheese salad. The melting goats’ cheese was servedon top a chickpea and mint cous cousand contrasted well with the sweetnessof beetroot. (£7.95)

With imaginative well priced pre-theatreand a la carte menus, an evening visit tothe foyer @HMT is definitely on the cards.

COMPETITION MARTIN WISHART

35

Scotland's Michelin starred chef MartinWishart has opened his Cook School inEdinburgh’s fashionable Leith district. He chatted to Trend’s Alison Daniels.

How did you first get into cooking and whatmade you decide to become a chef?At home we ate a lot of good Scottishdishes, like mince and tatties, stews andsoups, and spaghetti bolognaise was aboutas exotic as it got. I started a catering coursewhen I was 15, and discovered I loved theteamwork and working with my hands andjust got hooked.

Where did you start out and when did you openyour own restaurant?I went to the Caledonian from college, thento Australia for a year, then to CameronHouse. I travelled through France for a fewmonths for work experience in variousrestaurants, ran out of cash and came backto work for Nick Nairn, then spent a year atLe Gavroche. After that it was Canada, theUS and then stints with John Burton-Race,Marco Pierre White and Albert Roux. I returned to Edinburgh to open theBrasserie in the Balmoral in 1996 thenopened my own restaurant in 1999.

What do you think of the cult of the celebrity chef?I think it’s great that they’ve helped peoplebecome more aware of produce andseasonal cooking, but they’ve also madethings a bit misleading for young chefscoming into the trade. They don’t see thelong hours and hard work, just theglamour, and don’t always understandwhat’s needed to become successful.

Who does the cooking at home?My wife Cecile does most of it. She’s Frenchbut was born in Mexico, so we eat a lot ofsimple dishes, fish, salads and Mexicanfood with things like the flour for tortillasbeing brought over by family and friends.

What would your desert island meal be?I’d go for something really simple like somesuperb Serrano ham, good olives, crustybrown bread and a nice rioja – oh andsome tattie soup from Shetland.

What’s your guilty pleasure? In the restaurant, I quite like to grab a roll, fill it with boiled potatoes and vinegar. It’sthe closest I can get to a chip buttie!

Why did you decided to set up the cookery school? We were already doing a private diningservice where we’d cook for dinner partiesin people’s homes. Bruce (head chef at theCook School) and I really enjoy workingwith the public and I had given lessons inNew York and Canada, so we decided todo this rather than open a secondrestaurant. We also use the kitchens hereto explore new ideas for the restaurant.

How’s it going, so far?We only opened the Cook School at the endof January, but it has been going incrediblywell so far. We pride ourselves on offeringindividual attention and since most classesare eight people or less with two chefs, it’sa great relaxed environment. The dishes aresimilar to those we offer in the restaurant, but slightly simplified for home cookingand we make the most of fresh localingredients and seasonal produce.

A strong factor in the decision to set up herown practice was that she wanted to be ableto do things differently and the only way toaccomplish that was to become her own boss.

Julie said: “Once I had decided to make thebreak and set up on my own everythingseemed to fall into place. My big break

An insight by Kevin Davison, principal partner at K.W.A.DWell now, what are the prospects going to be like for buyersand sellers during this period?

Well I believe that a sense of realism has finally arrived andalthough it’s been a long time coming its extremely welcomejust now.

Over the last couple of months there has been a markedslowdown in activity in the Aberdeen property market. This isdown, in no small part, to the credit crunch with the withdrawalof 100% loans which has in turn meant that first time buyershave struggled to get a property.

Those selling to the first time buyers market should by nowhave become a little more realistic in what they are looking forby way of a sale price, or else they may find that theirproperties continue to sit unsold.

This sense of realism should get the property market goingagain and sellers on their way up the ladder and first timebuyers moved into a new property where before sellerswere holding out for prices they’d heard had been achievednext door last year.

The message just now then is to make sure you speak to aproperty expert before making your next move in or aroundAberdeen, as what’s happening elsewhere in theUK and globally is having an effecteverywhere, no matter how much of amicro economy we think we live in herein Aberdeen.

The message just now then is to make sure you speak to aproperty expert before making your next move in or aroundAberdeen, as what’s happening elsewhere in theUK and globally is having an effecteverywhere, no matter how much of amicro economy we think we live in herein Aberdeen.

Ishoka, Aberdeen’s prestigious hair salon, located within a townhouse on AlbynTerrace, has recently undergone atransformation with the refurbishmentof its reception.

Director, Malcolm MacNeil, who hasmasterminded this project along withthe invaluable expertise of KarenMcKimmie, proprietor of AmbianceInterior Design, worked to achieve astylish and elegant setting befitting ofIshoka’s enviable reputation.

The brief was inspired by the sumptuousdecor reminiscent of a boutique hotel.Together, they strived to make thereception an area where clients wouldwish to linger over coffee before goingupstairs to their appointment.

The decoration uses a sophisticatedpalette of greys and rich purples. Thejuxtaposition of carefully chosen texturesalso played a vital role in the scheme’ssuccess. However, it’s the quality of thebeautiful French wallpaper and theopulence of the purple silk curtains thattake precedence and make it a trulyindulgent space for clients to spendtime in and enjoy.

Through the redecoration of the reception, which is the first stage in a refurbishmentof the salon as a whole, they have createdan environment in which clients canindulge in luxurious relaxation in elegantsurroundings that reflect Ishoka’s ethosfor excellence in design.

Having hopefully inspired you over the last few issues, you’vejust finished pouring over every glossy magazine and searchingthe web and found the perfect look for your room. Now,before you start stripping the walls – STOP – and think lighting.

Lighting is one of the most powerful elements of interior designand has the versatility to transform a space and create differentmoods in different rooms. Clever lighting can give richnessand depth to any living or working space. The type of lightingthat you use should be considered at planning stage and notwhen the walls are papered and the floor laid and it’s too lateto wire. Your choice of materials and textures will also play withthe natural and artificial lighting in the space. Pale coloursreflect light and dark colours absorb light and form the mood.

Many of the fabulous interiors pictured in the magazines uselayered lighting – that is using a combination of the following:Ambient lighting – giving a general good level of brightness foreveryday useFeature lighting – highlighting objects or features in the room eg.curtains or a sculpturetask lighting – designed to provide strong localised light forspecific tasks eg. reading or cooking

There’s an ever increasing choice of fittings with which toexperiment and create exciting effects – downlighters, uplighters, wall and floorwashers, flexible strip lighting and an amazingrange of decorative chandeliers, shades and lamps. Even if youare restricted in overhauling your wiring, install a dimmer.

So, before you spend a small fortune creating your dreamhome, think atmosphere – think light!

a luxurious stay at the 5 star WestinTurnberry Resort

When I was s a student working in hotels inthe Rockies, a kindly Canadian once remarked:“There are only two types of people in thisworld – the Scots, and those who wish theywere Scots.” Twenty years on, I experiencedKinnaird. Only then did I truly appreciatehow privileged I am to call this home.

The 7,000 acre Kinnaird Estate is locatedon the lush, wooded side of the Tay Valley, north of Perth.

We were warmly welcomed at the steps ofthe grand house and shown to the KincraigieRoom with its living fire and bunchedfragrant spring flowers. It’s one of only eightmajestic rooms and sole suite in this intimateScottish home, through whose windows toGod’s world we caught a rare view of a redsquirrel darting through his trees.

It’s no wonder its owner, Mrs ConstanceCluett Ward, shies from calling this rare retreata hotel, even though it has rightful pride ofplace in the Relais & Chateaux 2008 collectionof the world’s finest restaurants and hotels.

Concierge and outdoor butler, Alastair Cowe, was itching to share with us his plethora ofknowledge about the house’s proud heritage, dating back to the early 1600s – with itsloving family photographs of the Windsors, the Wards and the Rockefellers.

Dinner was exquisite, service impeccable –and at a perfect pace: West coast scallop withgreen and white asparagus from the estate’sgarden, lobster presse, roasted suckling pigand fennel fondant turbot roasted on thebone – and a cheese trolley which warrantedits own red carpet on its journey to our table.

After a heavenly breakfast of exotic freshfruit, irresistible smoked bacon and a poachedegg done to perfection, we met the lovelyJimmy Tritton – head ghillie of 25 yearsand longest serving employee on theKinnaird estate.

He drove us to the Lower Kinnaird Beat, where – on the sunniest day of spring - he patiently taught me how to spin cast andshared with my partner, Norman, and me,

his infectious tales about encounters on theestate’s three hill lochs. What a gentleman.

Embarking on my day out in Banchory, gateway to Royal Deeside, my first stopwas Orvis, on the corner of Bridge Street, which has an extensive collection ofmenswear and womenswear, everything for the angler, and even alimited selection of touristy foods.

Then it was on to Aitkens Jeweller, owned by Fran and Bill Aitken.Browsing in the window, they hadnecklaces and matching braceletsstrung together in amazingly brightcolours. On stepping inside, the

handbags were fantastic, many inbright shades of red. Prices for thebrightly coloured jewellery didn’tbreak the bank either, at a reasonable£50 for the necklace and £20 for thematching bracelet.

I then stopped for a coffee in the ShielingRestaurant and gift shop. The Shieling isowned by Dave Foster whose teamprovides great service and sumptuouscoffee and cakes. There’s also a choiceof superb homemade soup andlunchtime treats.

If you venture to Banchory on a sunnyday and fancy an ice cream, look nofurther than our next stop –Continental Creams, owned by Chrisand Linda. They serve Mackies IceCream from both the shop and hatchwhich looks onto Dee Street andalways hosts an eager queue. Theyboast about their large selection of oldfashioned sweetie jars. The mainattraction for me though, is the choiceof chocolates – handmade and thelovely Lindt chocolate. Delicious!

Duncans of Banchory is a real treasuretrove, with ladies and gents clothing, furniture, crystal, pictures, carpets andrugs – even corsets!

Arriving in the High, we dropped intoHays Flowers where Jill Ritchie and herstaff always meet you with a cheerysmile and oblige with innovativedesigns for every occasion.

Next stop was the Douglas Hotelwhere we were greeted by the ownerand directed through to the lounge

and balcony area: The perfect venuefor a crisp glass of wine on a warmevening. The menu includesspecialities such as mussels in garlicand cream sauce, veal marsala, venisonsausages with herb mashed potatoesand grilled salmon to order.

After a sumptuous lunch, we calledinto Riah Hair Design, owned by JulieSangster. The shop was buzzing andthere was an abundance of evidenceon the walls highlighting Julie’sspeciality: bridal work. She’s even been

featured in Hello magazine and worksalongside her husband’s business,Deeside Photographic’s.

A final must, while in Banchory is a visitto Raemoir Garden Centre. As theseasons change they have everythingyou will ever want for the garden – and afantastic place to go if you are looking foran unusual gift. Rarely will you see therestaurant without a queue at the door.

Enchanting Aberdeen street sceneshave become something of atrademark for local young artist MaryButterworth. The 27-year-old’sstunning paintings of North-eastlocations has won her much praise andpopularity as a blossoming talent.

Painting mostly in acrylic, she capturesthe hypnotic and magical qualities oflight, particularly in her night scenes.Mary, who is originally from Glen Muick, near Ballater, has had no formal training inart but her father, renowned North-eastartist Howard Butterworth, has been herteacher from a very young age.

She said: “Mostly I remember Dadpainting and he would always give mepaints to use so I would paint alongsidehim all the time. As soon as I could holda brush I started dabbling in paintingbut abstract is how I would havedescribed them! I would always look atDad’s work and think that I wanted to beas good as him. But now we do differentthings as I’m more into the city, people, lights and more photography basedworks.”

Mary captures her scenes first oncamera and laughs about walking thestreets of the city late at night in allweathers in search of something thatgrabs her interest and imagination. She said: “Each night is different inAberdeen – you can have darkness withtwinkling light, red skies, haar – each

location can be different every nightand something can just stand out andmake you stop.”

Back in her Aberdeen studio she thencreates her paintings from the stillphotograph, aiming to capture themoment with a touch of emotionaldrama and movement in the lights tobring the painting to life.

Mary continued: “I’ve been surprised bythe popularity of my work. I haven’t seenanyone else paint Aberdeen like thatand I’m glad that people like them. Thefirst one I tried was an experiment andthen it sold really quickly at a city gallery.”

At an exhibition last year every one ofher paintings sold out – she currentlyhas 10 commissions and five otherbuyers awaiting her work.

Mary has exhibited and sold herpaintings successfully since 1997, andhas had a continuous display at TheButterworth Gallery in Deeside since theend of 2003. Her paintings are held inprivate collections across the U.K, Spainand New Zealand.

Mary is planning another exhibition inAberdeen in the summer and followingthat she’s considering doing some workin Edinburgh and Glasgow.

King’s Links Golf Centre in Aberdeen has 56 floodlit bays on its driving range, but I’mescorted to one of the studios where Steven Craig, head instructor, has theunenviable task of teaching me to play golf.

We start with an introduction to the clubs and sorting out a grip. I’m handed a sixiron, my grip is adjusted again and I’m encouraged to hit a few balls off a piece ofrubber tubing, then directly off the ground. The ball doesn’t go quite as far as Steve’sshots, but I hardly ever miss.

The studio is wired for video and Steve can show you what you’re doing well, andwhere improvement is needed. Luckily the video system doesn’t seem to pick upsound, since I’m sure there have been a few curses. Steve can even show you howyour swing compares with Tiger Woods’ which seems a little ambitious since Tigerhas been playing since he’s two, and I’ve been playing for twenty minutes.

Nonetheless, I’m happy to hear that I have a good swing. I’m convinced that it’s betterwhen there’s no ball involved, and I’m told that this is true for all golfers. Steve says I’mhitting the ball about 100-150 yards and I’m pleased when I get the ball on the green –until I remember I’m supposed to be aiming for a blue sign about another hundredyards on and 30ft to the left.

Not only is this a great way forbeginners to get the basics beforeproducing huge divots on a course,it’s also a useful exercise for moreexperienced golfers who want toimprove some aspect of their game.Given a couple more hours. I couldhave given Colin Montgomerie arun for his money.

First impressions in today’s world are sovery important, whether it be meetingthat certain someone, looking for a newhome or buying a car. I defy anyone tolook at the Jaguar XKR and tell me thatthey do not like what they see. Also, bestof all it is British. Does the XKR drive aswell as it looks?

Well with a 4.3 litre, V8 super-chargedengine delivering over 400 hp, 0 – 60 injust over four seconds, bolted onto aridged aluminium structure, derived fromaerospace technology and feedingthrough a fully automatic gear box whichactually adapts itself to your drivingstandard – the answer is simply – Yes.

Jaguar give an option called Portfoliowhich means you can have your ownpersonal choice of interior, for exampleyou can choose to have an alloy gear

lever and selector-gate surround withtwin contrast stitching, highlighting doorpanels and instrument panels.

Reclining in the luxury sports seats withsoft grain perforated leather and 16 wayadjustment seats, you cannot help but beseduced by the opulence.

As I do most of my testing at night whenthe roads are quiet, I particularly enjoyedthe active front lighting which can deflectthe headlight beams up to 15%, castinglight deeper into corners and with censorsthat react to the car’s speed and steeringinput – it gave me great confidence fordriving in the dark. Also worth a mentionis Jaguar’s smart key system, as long as I hadthe key fob in my pocket, the car unlockedas I approached, all that was thenrequired was that I press the start button.

I drove this particular model, first of allon the motorway to see how itperformed. At 70 mph it is whisper quietand I could listen to the Bowers & Wilkinssurround system and almost forget I wasin a high performance coupe. Just toremind me I left the motorway for someB roads, I know really well, to put the carthrough its paces. Here the V8 andlightweight suspension systems reallycame into their own, allowing me to exploitthe 400 hp to its full potential. I particularlyliked to hear the noise track from theexhausts, which was certainly on a parwith the stereo system.

The British tend to knock all things British. If it is not German for cars, French forfood, Italian for fashion, then it is notright. Well at long last the Brits i.e. Jaguarhave developed a car which cancompete, in not only performance but instyle. With sales up 85%, then obviouslyit is not only my opinion.

In plain language – if you want a car thathas classic looks and will look good formany years to come, also gives you thatfeel good factor, then look no furtherthan the XKR.

If the face isn’t instantly recognisable, the voice will be – Andy James hosts theweekday Drive Time show onNorthsound 1 at 96.9FM, sharing his wit, chat and music with listeners all over theNorth-east of Scotland. He lives inBlackburn with his wife and son.

What do you like most about living in the North-east?

Definitely the people. The people arereally nice in the North-east andparticularly with the oil industry beingso dominant it has brought a good mixof people to the area. I moved toAberdeen from Sheffield in 1986 withmy family. I now live in Blackburn and Ilike the fact it doesn’t take long to getanywhere – we can be in thecountryside in minutes.

Where would we find you chilling out with trend?

You’re most likely to find me at home. I am happiest when I’m with my wifeZoe and our baby son Samuel, who’seight months old. I don’t tend to go outin town very much as I’ve worked in

pubs and clubs for years so I prefer to goto a restaurant and there are some greatplaces in Inverurie. We can also be foundwalking in the woods near where welive, accompanied by our dog.

What is your ideal holiday?

The Isle of Capri, without a doubt. Wegot married in Italy and Capri was anamazing place – and it was boiling hottoo – and I’d like to explore more of theAmalfi coast. We had a great time skiingin Austria before Easter and willprobably go to Portugal later in the year, where Zoe’s parents have a house.

What makes Andy James tick?

My family, cars – especially my Golf GTI -music and my work – I know I have anunusual job and I love the entertainmentside of things. My show is broadcast onNorthsound 1 from 4pm to 7pm eachweekday and from 10am to 1pm at theweekend, and I like sharing the thingsI’ve done or found out that day. It’s like abig happy meeting in the pub!
