At Trend, we’re always getting ahead of ourselves, planning future issues and exploring everything that’s going to be happening in North-east Scotland over the next few months. It may be June, but we’re thinking about December.
Take the Trend Life with Style Awards, for example. It may be the glitziest night of the year in Aberdeen - and it certainly brings together some of the best evening dresses you’ll ever see apart from the Oscars red carpet – but the Trend events team put in a huge amount of work for many months in advance.
Even deciding what’s likely to be on the fashion radar is prepared well in advance, researching international collections and just hoping that the Scottish weather decides to fit the mood of floaty florals and won’t leave us all wet and miserable.
Of course, sometimes we should give up on planning and just give in to spontaneity, finding pleasure in something new, however small. It might be a cocktail instead of a coffee, or dinner somewhere you’ve never eaten before. It might be treating yourself to something new for the house, a holiday wardrobe, something sparkly or visiting somewhere off the beaten track.
We say - It’s summer, enjoy yourself!

The first Crystals & Ice Ball has been officially launched and will take place on February 23rd next year at the Marcliffe Hotel & Spa.The ball has been organised to raise funds for Aberdeen Royal Infirmary’s Neurosurgery Ward. The on-going fundraising efforts are led by Robin & Lynne Parkinson to raise £100,000 for life saving brain surgery equipment for Ward 40. The couple have already raised almost £13,000 through various challenges including competing in marathons, ironman events and cycling the length of Scotland.
Robin is a Director of Escape Business Technologies and staff at the IT firm have also organised a ‘bacon dasher’ and ‘banoffathon’ providing clients with bacon rolls and banoffee pie. Robin said, “The ball is going to be a wonderful event with great entertainment, fantastic food and exciting auction prizes. We hope all local businesses will consider taking a table and get involved through sponsorship too. We are extremely grateful for the support so far and the ball will be a great chance for everyone to get together and recognise the efforts of everyone so far.”

North-east hairdressers can now recycle waste hair into compost rather than bin it.
Organics recycling firm Keenan Recycling transforms food and garden waste into BSI accredited compost and have just introduced hair as a new item that can be composted. Human hair has a high nitrogen level, which is proven to help plants thrive and the slow release of nitrogen from the compost helps maintain an even and rich growth. The compost produced from the waste is used on gardens and crops by local businesses and farmers. The all-day menu offers a selection to keep you going from breakfast, through to lunch and afternoon tea, before changing to the pre-theatre menu.
At lunch time tables quickly filled up, mainly with lunching ladies as outside shoppers passed by wrestling umbrellas againstthe wind.
As well as the selection of paninis, sandwiches and jacket potatoes with a choice of the day’s fillings, (on our visit, traditional in style such as egg mayo and tuna mayo) there are sharing platters and north east classics such as steak and ale pie and fish and chips.
I chose from the ‘peckish’ selection – a comforting 1906 rarebit – toasted brioche with spinach, cheese sauce and a perfectly poached egg (oh and a side order of fries, which of course I shared, to balance out a side salad). My friend’s coronation chicken panini came with a nicely dressed side salad and vegetable chips, touches that made having a sandwich a little more special.
After a couple of coffees and watching the world go by on the wet street below, we decided that 1906 makes a pleasant, very reasonably priced lunchtime destination that we would definitely return to.

I spent a large part of last Friday evening at the beach, watching the waves break and the occasional seagull get blown around against its will. I was not, however, freezing cold and getting blown away myself, because I was enjoying the sea view from the comfort and warmth of the Pier Bistro.
Our table, complete with candles, was right at the window so there was nothing to detract from the view. To be honest, though, the window is so big, and the tables have been laid out in such a way, that almost anywhere in the room is right in front of the window.
The Bistro is now open on Friday and Saturday nights from 6pm, and the menu – and atmosphere - changes accordingly. Between two of us we tried – and thoroughly enjoyed - the mushrooms and brioche, and the smoked salmon cannelloni to start. We followed that with seared chicken that came with a large stack of even larger chips, and a sirloin with
a sticky port and plum chutney that was delicious.
We finished with a creamy cookie and ice cream pudding and a cheese board that came with the biggest oatcakes I’ve ever had. It’s just as well it’s such a nice place to sit, because we were far too full to move for a while!
I’m glad, though, that we stayed to take time and finish our drinks because one of the best things about the Pier Bistro is the setting – it seems to be as much about the beach as it is about the food.
The service is unhurried, the atmosphere is relaxed, and it’s a great place to enjoy some good food, the waves, and some excellent people watching - all at the same time.

What made you decide to be a chef?Like a lot of chefs I fell into the trade, I finished my degree and was not sure on what to do after. Meeting my partner Helena and cooking for her, she suggested I should try out for a job at Sand Dollar where they had an opening for a chef. I found that I loved it and haven’t looked back.
Describe your cooking style.My style has changed a lot over the last three years, I have pushed myself technically. Right now we’ve introduced sous-vide (water bath) and some elements of molecular gastronomy into this kitchen to really bring out the best in the ingredients. The basic idea is to get good seasonal ingredients and give them a British or Scottish twist, taking overdone or forgotten classics and giving them a fresh look.
If you could invite famous person from history, literature, film etc to dinner, who would it be, why and what would you eat?It would probably be Roald Dahl, his children and adult books alike were fantastic and had a wickedly dark sense of humour, his family compiled a wonderful cookbook,
full of great recipes for kids and family feasts. I would probably cook as many courses as possible and include a lot of drinks so I could hear as many of his stories as possible.
Where do you look for inspiration?The internet provides many ideas and inspiration from technical El Bulli type preparations to an Indian mother showing her favourite dishes on YouTube. There is nothing you cannot find out, though nothing beats going out and tasting it for yourself. Go to Spain for the best Jamon or tapas, Brussels for beer and mussels or the Scottish west coast to know what a fresh fish really is. With these experiences I know what I must do to match or surpass great recipes and put my own twist on them whilst keeping true to the ingredients.
What is the worst thing aboutmodern restaurant cooking?For me it’s the long hours, many of my friends who are not in the trade find it difficult to understand how we manage to put in so many hours to the job. But if everything is freshly made by hand that is unfortunately the cost. Having said that I would rather be chef now then at any other time, we have more access to ingredients and equipment also the British customer is more educated about what is quality food

Instructions:Beat the egg whites with crème fraiche, season with salt and pepper in a bowlPlace in a pan and cook for 3-4 mins, just before the end take off the heat and fold in crab meat and sorrel, while doing this place

For the hollandaise place butter in a jug and put in a microwave for 2.30 min or until boiling hot, while this is heating use a blender to combine mustard, lemon juice, salt and pepper and egg yolks until light yellow and frothy. Take butter and slowly add while continuously blending,Place sourdough bread on a plate, top with scramble egg, stack asparagus on top, garnish plate with drops of Tabasco, ring onion and a good drizzle of oil

Class in a GlassToday you’re more likely to find a bit of molecular cuisine thrown into the mix along with some black pepper, agave nectar, Stilton and a dash of violets. For not only has there been a renaissance in cocktail culture but a positive revolution, led in Aberdeen by the stylish and original venue Orchid.
Here the team has been conjuring up some magical and unique potions to amuse an ever more discerning and adventurous clientele. Launched in October 2009, the Langstane Place venue is already established as THE late night venue of choice for city sophisticates who enjoy the buzz reminiscent of a classy New York cocktail bar.
However it’s also the perfect pit-stop for a relaxing post-work or pre-dinner drink in the more laidback early evening when attentive midweek table service adds to the experience.
Orchid has also become a favoured venue for private and corporate parties and on Friday evenings, between 5 and 7pm, guests can enjoy some complimentary Japanese cuisine along with their drinks.
However, it’s the extensive cocktail menu that really sets Orchid apart. Currently listed in
the Best Bars of the World, owner Ben Iravani and his management team, Rob Smith and Martin Farmer, along with head bartender/mixologist Barry Hickey, are consistently pushing the boundaries with quirky but curiously drinkable combinations.
Alongside classics like Mint Julep and the more contemporary Pink Orchid, is an exotic selection of savoury drinks, featuring specially-created infusions .

We shall kick off the first cocktail column from Orchid with the recipe for our most popular cocktail, the Pink Orchid. New flat-six engines with direct petrol injection, a completely revised chassis and evolutionary styling set a new benchmark for the baby of the Porsche family. A few brief minutes of chat are all it takes to know that Marjory Glenn (who paints under her maiden name Helme) is a very interesting artist.
As we look at her work, Marjory tells me that she studied at Gray’s, then moved on to fashion at St Martins (after I see her early designs I’m not surprised to learn that some were sold in a boutique in Knightsbridge).
Fashion, though, was left behind, and – with the help of Tolquhon Gallery to spur her on - Marjory began to paint again.Her attic studio is bright, and testament to the fact that bold colours and patterns are the focus of her work, whether she
is painting for herself or working on a commission.
“I am passionate about colour,” Marjory explains, “the doors, shutters and ironwork of the continent are a source of great inspiration to me”
Marjory says her love of Tuscany has also been a big influence, and when I see her landscapes of the region it’s hard not to see why she adores the place. Her scenes of Vilamoura and the south of France too, make it easy to see why so many people commission her – and trust her - to bring fond holiday memories to life.
Among the European scenes and vibrant
still lifes, though, there is one painting of Marjory’s that is particularly striking – the sun coming up over the rooftops of Aberdeen. “I painted it from a photo I had take from an upstairs window at six o’clock one morning,” Marjory added.
That painting, with its early light, bright granite, and clear sky, is so good for the same reason that all of her other work is so evocative - Marjory brings out everything that is positive about a place, whether that place is Tuscany, Portugal, Venice, France, or Aberdeen.

Grant Robson is developing a reputation as Aberdeenshire’s sculpture superhero, bringing scrap metal back to life at his workshop just outside Laurencekirk. Grant transforms unwanted agricultural machinery and steel bars into impressively solid sculptures that would grace any garden or reception area.
Grant comes from an agricultural background, so his route to becoming a sculptor was unusual. “As a time served tractor mechanic, I have always had an interest in the makings of agricultural machinery. Some of the shapes are very unusual and interesting to look at,” Grant explained, “eventually, this led me to create sculptures from the spare parts and scrap metals, combining my interest in nature and wildlife with working with materials I love”.
Grant continued, “I am self taught, so my way of working has evolved through trial and error and probably isn’t typical of other artists or makers. For a start, my designs are never put on paper and I work completely from my imagination and make use of the metal shapes I have available. I’ve never really been inspired by other artists, but my inspiration comes from working amongst metal and seeing the workings of agricultural machinery.
“The materials I use come from all sorts of places around Laurencekirk. I buy materials from steel stockists and I also get a lot of my scrap metal from local farmers.”
“Once I have an idea, I use a welder, cutting tools and paint materials to make my sculptures. Most of my pieces are of animals and each piece is unique since I use different materials in each one.
“I am always open to suggestions for new
pieces of work, I have just recently finished a wild hare that was first mentioned in a conversation with a visitor to my last exhibition and I’m happy to discuss commissions and site-specific work if a client has something in mind”.
Grant’s work is proving popular amongst buyers and has started to win critical acclaim too. Last year, his sculpture of a dog won the Sybil-Jean Swann Trophy - The Peoples' Choice Award – at the Kincardine and Deeside Arts Forum (KDAF) Exhibition and Competition at The Milton Gallery.
Despite just setting up his business LGR Sculptures in 2010, Grant has already designed and created a portfolio of a variety of interesting and appealing sculptures including dogs, pheasants, partridges, butterflies, a foal, candle holders, giant scissors and even a jewellery tree. He is currently expanding his portfolio and premises, while continuing to develop his sculpting techniques.
“People can view my work on my website www.lgrsculptures.co.uk and my facebook page LGR sculptures. As each piece is unique the prices vary, some of my more popular pieces such as partridges and jewellery trees are £45, pheasants are £100 all of which are made from round bar. The scrap metal sculptures are priced higher due to the timescale involved in creating them, but they usually start from £200 upwards”.
“I’ll also be showing my work during September during the NEOS open studios event from the 15th to the 23rd and I’m more than happy to have visitors”.

A trip to London is an exciting prospect – galleries, bars, restaurants, shopping, theatres…but it can also bea daunting one – crowds.All the time. Everywhere. Well, almost everywhere.

I recently stayed in London for a few days, in the very centre, but I felt like I was in a little bubble, protected from the extreme bustle that sometimes makes London an exhausting place.
I stayed at the Mercer Street Hotel, in the heart of the Seven Dials area of Covent Garden.
Seven Dials takes its name from the dial that sits at the centre of the six streets that make up the area. Six streets, I know, doesn’t sound big, but those streets are packed with independent and pop-up shops, restaurants, bars, pubs, salons, and hotels that make the place feel like a calmer, miniature London within London.
I recommend starting the day with an excellent breakfast at the hotel, and following that with a wander around the shops – Albam, Baracuta, Wolsey and the T-shirt store are just some of what’s on offer for the men, whether they prefer modern independents, or classic heritage brands, and women are hardly stuck for choice either.
For vintage, head to Orion, for incredible jewellery stop by Tatty Devine - a giant Lobster necklace was the stand-out piece for me, but there are plenty of less unusual options on offer if crustaceans aren’t your style. Or for something a little more interesting take a look in Coco de Mer…
Even if you don’t have a sweet tooth, a visit to Hotel Chocolat’s Roast and Conch bar and restaurant should be factored in. If you don’t fancy a fresh chocolate wrap, do what I did and try the duck sandwich with chocolate and coriander, and dip into chocolate pesto and balsamic with fresh, warm bread.
If you can squeeze it in, the Covent Garden Hotel is an excellent dinner spot – a bolthole for A-listers in the city, the hotel itself is painfully luxurious and the restaurant no less impressive - and finishing your night at the other end of the scale with a drink at the Two Brewers’ pub will definitelynot disappoint.
The beer is delicious and the clientele – often musicians and actors relaxing after a performance at the nearby Cambridge Theatre – are very interesting indeed.
Seven Dials really is a must. I’ve stayed in great places in London, but none so well set up as Seven Dials – it not only has everything you could need, but it also provides anything you could want, and that includes a little bit of calm and quiet, right in the centre of London.

The original plans were overseen by architect John Smith - the same John Smith that designed early alterations and extensions for Balmoral Castle - and by the 1880s, fishermen and their families were living in the cottages he had envisaged.
Fittie lies on the left bank of the Dee, at the mouth of the harbour, and it is a credit to the cleverness of those that built the village that it is so quiet and sheltered when you’re only a stone’s throw from a somewhat angry sea and the industrial work of the harbour.The cottages on the North and South Squares, though, were built with shelter in mind - looking inward, single storey, and – now – beautifully kept.
Throughout the 19th century, tarry sheds were added to the communal areas in the village, and – now that so many have been converted – it is a little nosy but wandering around and try to guess how they might look inside is irresistible.
Pilot Square, built to house the pilots of Aberdeen harbour, was laid out sometime around 1855, and the homes surrounding it were built to what was considered to be a better standard than those on the North and South Squares. The charm of the earlier cottages, however, is hard to beat.
A walk around the village, and it’s tiny cottages and mysteriously ramshackle outhouses, is a powerful reminder of the industry that was once the lifeblood of this city.
Even now, when the nets are gone and the streets are filled with gnomes and garden chairs instead of workers, you can’t help but think what a strong and close knit community it would have taken to live and work between the city and sea.
In 1809, plans were laid out for construction of a small village that most of us refer to as Fittie, but is properly named Footdee.

There are certain activities in life that, for one reason or another, have found their way into a category that I refer to as Things I Will Probably Never Do. Until recently, that list included driving a sled pulled by Siberian Huskies but, thanks to a man named Wattie McDonald, my list is now shorterby one.
Wattie, an experienced Iditarod musher, is founder of Husky Haven, a dog sled adventure company located just off the A90 in Stonehaven. The boys and I joined Wattie and his team of pure-bred Siberian Huskies for a day out on the trails.
We were eased into the day in my favourite way, with coffee and bacon rolls, before being taken outside and presented to the team of canine athletes, who greeted us with a cacophony of barks and yelps that told us they were every bit as up for the adventure as we were. The dogs and my boys eagerly introduced themselves, and a round of two-legged embraces ensued.
Because of the lack of snow, the two-dog teams are attached to ‘rigs’ that look like large, seat-less tricycles that can be easily manoeuvred along the one-mile track. I chose my own team of dogs, Freya and Danny Boy, and, after explaining to them that slow is the new fast, we set off together. Leaving
behind the calls of the remaining huskies, I was soon enveloped by the silence of diligent effort and I instantly felt the pull that caused Wattie to dedicate his life to these magnificent creatures.
The connection between Wattie and his dogs is that of family, and the rest of the day was spent letting us into his own personal experiences with them, as well as teaching us about the care and maintenance of this unique breed. All in all, it was an experience I thought I’d never have, and one that I now think everyone should.

The Big Bridal BashBrides flocked to The Big Bridal bash at Aberdeen's Ardoe House Hotel to help raise money for the Archie foundation. Some guests bought V.I.P tickets and were chauffeured to the event in vintage wedding cars kindly donated by Aristocars. The Bridal Bash was a fabulous opportunity for ladies of all ages to get their best dresses dusted off and back on for a night. Guests enjoyed a champagne cocktail reception sponsored by Orchid bar and a superb 3 course meal followed by plenty of dancing and a great raffle to top it all off. The event hosted by Amy Swinton owner of Profile hair was the first of its kind in Aberdeen and as it proved such a success Amy says she can’t wait to get her dress back on for the 2014 Bridal Bash (date t.b.c)

Parents, teachers and friends of the Hamilton School in Queens Road danced the night away at a ceilidh ball to raise funds for the Grampian Autistic Society. The event on was attended by 125 people at The Marcliffe at Pitfodels and raised over £4000 for charity.Owner and Principal at The Hamilton School, Kathlyn Taylor said: "It was a fantastic night. We sold every ticket and hopefully it will be the first of many fundraising celidhs." Nicola Burnett, a member of the Hamilton Association who helped organise the event, added: "Thanks to everyone who helped out - it was a terrific evening and we were delighted with the amount of money we managed to raise."

The well-groomed made-for-TV showbiz type on the right of this picture is, yes, comedian John Bishop. All the girls swooned at the sight of the 45-year-old Liverpudlian with the gleaming gnashers and super-sharp suit when he made a guest appearance at the 50th anniversary dinner of Taylors Industrial Services at the Falls of Feugh Restaurant on the outskirts of Banchory.
But what lifts the picture into a historic spot in father-of-three John’s life is that it was his last engagement before he embarked on his Week of Hell for Sport Relief. No sooner had he entertained guests in a star-spangled marquee than he was being driven off south through the night.
John popped up next in Paris to begin his great charity triathlon. First he cycled 185 miles from the French capital to Calais before rowing all 26 miles across the Channel the next day with TV presenter Davina McCall, Olympic gold medallist Denise Lewis and cricketer Freddie Flintoff.
As if that wasn’t enough, he then completed three marathons in three days. Battling exhaustion, severe aches and pains, sickness and sleep deprivation, John finally made it to Trafalgar Square in London.
The former pharmaceutical salesman has earned a fortune from his comedy turns in the last 11 years but he has certainly put something back with a vengeance. His mind-boggling triathlon raised a staggering £1.6 million and a further £1.8 million after a TV programme about his Week of Hell. John said: “'I’m absolutely blown away.
That money is going to change lives. I’ve seen the projects that Sport Relief supports and the great thing is it’s not only going to help people abroad. You can get in your car anywhere in the country and within 15 minutes you will find a project funded by Sport Relief.”P.S. The not-so-smooth bloke on the left of the picture has raised more than £1million for charities at various dinners and looks as if he has eaten and drunk well in the process!
