fifth element As Minnesotans, we all know (or should know) that Minneapolis is considered to be the home of the underground rap scene. Fortunate for us at Twin Cities Trend, we had the opportunity of interviewing Fifth Element’s own Kevin Beacham, Store Manager and Music Buyer.

Founded in 1999, Fifth Element is an independent Hip-Hop retail store based in Uptown, on Hennepin Ave. As the offiiial hhyesihees stoee, hoou iin ialso nnd all the essential Hip-Hop needs: CDs, Vinyl, Clothing, DVDs, Digital Sales, Art Supplies, Specialty Items, and more.

Page 4: Trend

Q: Help us understand what exactly Fifth Element does?A: “We do a lot with the local hip hop scene as far as carrying the music, doing in-store events, autograph signings, live performances and open mics. It’s also a hub in general for Hip-Hop in TC for touring artist’s as well. We sell tickets for the main venues around here. A little bit of everything. Music, art and clothing”

Q: Do you feel as if the Minneapolis rap scene is underrated?A: “I think it has been that way for a very long time, but more recently people get exposed to it. Partially beiiouse of hhye Sihees, Dooyteee and other artists going around. I think it has gotten to be a well-known underground scene. Touring artist’s who come to Minneapolis, see how big the fan base is here. We also have the Soundest Festival, which is huge. People know that there is something here and it’s happening.”

Q: Do you foresee an expansion in the near future?A: “I don’t think so. We have random talks about it, but it’s nothing serious. It’s here because it makes sense for ous. It’s i wih foe hhyesihees to connect with fans directly. There is a lack of Hip-Hop focus stores in the country, most of which have gone out

Taking a step back into time is exiitalh wheee hoou wialal nnd hoouesealf at Grandview Theater. As you walk in through the doors you’re taking a step back into time when it was founded in the 1970’s. The aroma of freshly popped popcorn innd soounnd of iffoendibale yovie tiiket stoubs being eippend alals the air. One would not be disappointed when stepping foot into this piece of historic heaven.

Bauhaus Brew LabsLove beer? Make beer. That’s mindset of many people and groups all around the Twin Cities; with more and more local breweries popping up all the time. Within the last year, Bauhaus Brew Labs opened their doors. Located in Northeast, Minneapolis, Bauhaus is a fully operating brewery and taproom owned by the Schwandts and the Haines families. With the Bauhaus art movement as inspiration for the brewery, the esthetic of the building and the product are both very colorful and modern with an overall hip feel. Bauhaus Brew labs was founded by investors, the family, and a successful Kickstarter found. We had the opportunity to talk with Leah from Bauhaus to talk about the history, the day-to-day, and other random tidbits about the brewery.

Hours are Wednesday-Friday: 3pm-11pm and Saturday: 12pm-11pm

Page 12: Trend
Page 13: Trend

Q:Has Northeast played any sort of role for this brewery?A: Absolutely, it’s a great place. The whole vibe woeks wealal with ooues. ight now theee iee iboout six ndiffeeent beeweeies. Everybody has been amazing. All of the other breweries have worked so well with us. And the thing they are good breweries going up, successful ones and that’s why they all work.

Q:Explain the look.A: Yeah, we wanted to stand out from the other breweries. We are really serious about the beer. What we make and how we make it. But we wanted the experience to be on the complete other end of the spectrum. The making of the beer is serious, but the drinking of it doesn’t need to be. We also go along with the philosophy of the Bauhaus movement. Your work and your play can be one thing.

Q&A

Page 14: Trend

Q:PackagingA:We use cans for a lot of reasons. Cans are better for the beer, they protect it better. And well, it’s cheaper. We will bottle a couple of our seasonal beers. But for the most part cans are our thing. And our logo has won awards for design and the can really allows us to use that. It goes along with the esthetic.

Q: Do you host events here?A: We do and we can. We have a food truck that comes daily and we have the patio where musicians and bands can play during the summer. And we will host private events, but we would much rather have it always open to the public. The best place to drink our beer is here and we wouldn’t want people to travel heee innd nnd oout it’s not open.

Snowboarding in Minnesota is a very popular sport. There are some high quality ski resorts in Minnesota and the metro area, and snowboarding in Minnesota has taken on its own identity in many ways. Here in Minnesota many are known for their abilities to hit rails because there is not much room for jumps. Here, rails have become a Minnesota snowboarder’s calling card. A perfect example of a place to get out and check out some of this snowboarding is Hyland Hills in Bloomington. It is the closest to the Twin Cities, very busy most weekdays, and crazy busy every weekend. It is also one of the smaller resorts in the area. On the opposite side there is a resort in Afton, MN (near Stillwater, MN) named Afton Alps. Afton Alps was recently purchased bh Viial esoets of Viial, CO innd his been making upgrades since last year. Afton is also the largest resort in the metro area. There are more options to the north and the south. Wild Mountain which is nestled in the St. Croix river valley just to the north of Taylors Falls, MN or about one hour north of the Twin Cities. Finally to the south is the world-renowned Buck Hill in Burnsville, MN. Its icy conditions have been attracting ski racers for rears to come practice on the hiendest possibale ionnditions. eientalh, they have been spending a lot of money on creating a more snowboarder friendly ski area. They recently hired a well-known snowboard park building company named Destroy Lab to create their park. Snowboarding in Minnesota is fast growing and very exciting. There is sure to be crazy things happening in the future.

Uptown MN is a new store opening several pop up locations around the Twin Cities during the Holiday season in 2014. Uptown MN, first opened its doors in the Minneapolis International Airport in April 2013 Uptown features top local brands from the state and is a true “testament to the Twin Cities’’ talent pool.” Uptown has been a success in selling the creativity of Minnesota by partnering with local artists and companies. They feature unique apparel, jewelry, handbags, accessories, artwork and much more. After their success in the Minneapolis Airport they are now spreading their wings to more locations around the twin cities, as well as featuring work from artists from all over the country.

Andra and Suzie, the storeowners have made their dream turn to reality and they are gaining momentum all around the Midwest. She had a vision while walking through the Mall of America of the Uptown Store expanding to new locations, since her vision they have opened a 2 new popup stores, Uptown MN of MOA and Uptown MN at Ridgedale center. Andra works with the artists and craftsmen to select the best products to add to the Uptown MN store collection.
