TripOverviewThesoaringspiresandspectacularpeaksoftheWorldHeritageItalianDolomitesprovidetheplaygroundforthisincredibletrek.LocatedinthenortheastcornerofItaly,neartheborderwithAustria,wewillhiketheclassicAltaVia1(HighRoute).Wewillbesurroundedbymassivegraylimestonetowersandfindtranquilityinlushgreenvalleysalongour74mileroute.Wewillstayincharmingrifugios(mountainhuts),andenjoytrueItalianfareandhospitality.Wewillhikefor11consecutivedaysandtrekaboutsevenmilesperday,withanaveragealtitudegainofabout2,000feetperday.Wewillhikeatelevationsbetween5,000and9,000feet.ThisareawastheWorldWarIfrontlinebetweenAustrianandItalianforces,andwewillseeremnantsoffortifications,gunrampartsandmilesoftunnels.
TripItineraryUponarrivinginVerona,wetraveltoBolzanowherewewillstartouradventure,adjusttoEuropeantimeandexplorethemedievalcityofGothicandRomanesquearchitecture.WewillspendtwonightsandplantovisittheSouthTyrolMuseumofArcheology,whichhasthemummyofOtzi–theIceman.Fromthere,wetravelbytrainandbustothelovelylakesidetownofLagodiBraiesfromwhichwewillbeginourtrek.OurtrekfollowstheroutelaidoutintheCiceroneguidebook“Trekking

intheDolomites”byGillianPrice.Uponcompletionofthetrek,wetakeabustoBellunoandatraintoVeronatospendafinalnightthere.ThefollowingdaywereturntotheUSonSeptember8.

Thisisastrenuoushikegearedtowardstheexperiencedoutdoorstraveler.Wewillbehikingfor11consecutivedays.Somedayswillbelengthywithsignificantelevationgainsorlossesataltitudesupto9000feet;otherdayswillbeshorterandeasier.Sincebreakfast,dinnerandlodgingareprovidedonthetrek,wewillbetravelinglight,withbackpacksintherangeof20-25poundsfullyloaded.Youshouldhaveatleastintermediatetoadvancedhikingskills.Whilenotechnicalclimbingisrequired,thereareareaswithnarrowtrailsborderedbysteepdrop-offs.Wemayusefixedchainsorcablessetintherockfaceforshortascentsofsteepterrain.
Itmayhappenonanytripthatatripmemberisorbecomesunabletoparticipateinoneormoreoftheplannedactivities.Leadersintheirsolejudgmenthavetherightandobligationtorefuseparticipationinanyactivitytoanygroupmemberforreasonsofsafety,whetheritbeofthegrouporoftheindividual.Illness,injuryorlackofpropergearorfitnessforaparticularactivityareexamplesofsomeconditionsthatmightresultinaparticipant’sbeingunabletoperformoneormoreactivity.Leadersmaytrytofindasubstituteactivityortravelarrangementsforthetripmember,butthismaynotalwaysbepossible.
AMCAdventureTraveltripsareruninamannersupportiveofandconsistentwiththeconservation,recreationalandeducationalprinciplesandmissionoftheClub.TripleadersencourageparticipantconductconsistentwithLeaveNoTraceenvironmentalandconservationprinciplesandlocalregulations.
WeatherTheweatherinlateAugustandearlySeptemberistypicallysunnyandwarm.Theaveragehigh/lowtemperaturesare80/55degrees,withabouteightraindayspermonth.However,mountainweatherisalwaysunpredictable.Itispossiblewewillhavecolderorwarmertemperatures.Althoughunusualforthistimeoftheyear,thereisthepossibilityofsnow.Bringarainjacketandrainpants,aswellasapackcover.

TripCostThetripcostis$2495whichincludesalllodging,mostmeals,andgroundtransportation.Tripcostdoesnotincludeairfare,estimatedtobe$850-$1000.Notincluded:alllunches,2dinners,trailsnacks,alcohol,feesforoptionalactivities,anditemsofapersonalnature.
Thepriceforthisexcursionisbasedonquotesorestimatesobtainedatthetimethetripwasplanned.Thefinalpriceofthetripwillbeadjustedinaccordancewiththebestfinal
arrangementswecanmake.Anysavingsweachieve,aswellasanycostincreasesweincurwillbesharedbytripparticipants.Ourcostestimatesareconservative,andsoarefundismorelikelythanapriceincrease.AllAdventureTraveltripsarerunonanon-profitbasisandrefunds,ifany,areissuedafterthetrip’sfinancialaccountingiscomplete.
InaccordancewithAMCpolicy,youaresubsidizingtheleaders'costs.Beyondthis,theleadersarenotallowedtorealizeanyprofitfromthisexcursion.ThetrippriceincludesanAMCoverheadfeetocovertheadministrativeexpensesofofferingAdventureTravelexcursions.Thetripfeealsoincludesemergencymedicalandevacuationinsurancecoverage,whichisrequiredbytheAMC.Itdoesnotincludeinsurancefortraveldelay,interruption,orcancellation,orforbaggageloss.Ifthesepossibilitiesconcernyou,individualtravelinsuranceisrecommended.Moreinformationaboutincludedemergencymedicalandevacuationinsurance,aswellasaboutoptionalandrecommendedtravelinsurance,willbeprovidedtoparticipantsintheirformalacceptanceletters,whichwillbesentoutwhenthetriphastherequirednumberofacceptedapplicants.
Accommodations/MealsTransportationWewillbestayingathostelsandsmallhotelsinVerona,Bolzano,andLagodiBraies.Whileonthetrekwewillbestayinginrifugios(mountainhuts).Blanketsandpillowswillbeprovidedbutparticipantsmustbringasleepsacktobeusedinsteadofsheets.Accommodationsaretypicallyinabunkroomfor2to6peoplewithsharedbathrooms.Showersmaynotalwaysbeavailableandiftheyare,tokenswillbeneeded.

Breakfasts,generallycontinentalstyle,andheartydinnersareprovidedwiththehutaccommodations.Intowns,twodinnerswillbepaidforbythetrip(welcomedinner,farewelldinner),butlunchesareonyourownaswellastwodinners.Onthetrek,youmaybuyfoodforlunchfromtherifugiosthenightbeforeorwemaystopalongthewayatotherrifugiosandbuyfood.
TrainandbustransportationfromVeronaairporttoBolzano,LagodiBraies,andbacktoVeronaisincludedinthetripcost.
AirlinesandTravelPlantoarriveinVerona,ItalyonthemorningofAugust25,2018.(LeavetheUSonAugust24.)ThetripleaderswillassistyouwithinformationonflightsfromBoston,NYC,andotherpointsontheEastCoast.AttheVeronaairport,wewillgatherforourtransporttoBolzano.ThetripendsinVeronaonthemorningofSeptember8.Ofcourse,youmayarriveearlyorextendyourtrip.Donotmakeanynon-refundabletravelplansuntiltoldtodosobytheleaders.
ExperienceandRisksWhenyouparticipateinthisactivity,youshouldbeinproperconditionforthechallengesoutlinedinthisprospectusandequippedwiththeappropriategearasstated.Youshouldalwaysbeawareoftherisksinvolvedandconductyourselfaccordingly.Youareultimatelyresponsibleforyourownsafety.Priortoyouracceptanceasaparticipantinthistrip,youwillbeaskedtodiscussyourcapabilitiesandexperiencewithus.Wemayalsorequestreferencestoconfirmyourfitnesslevelandsuitabilityforparticipatingintripactivities.
ApplicationProcessandCancellationWeexpectagroupsizeof12people,includingtheleaders.Thistripislikelytofillquickly.Ifyouareinterested,letusknowbyemailorgiveusacall.Wewillemailyouthenecessaryapplicationmaterials.
YoumustcompleteandsubmittheParticipantApplication,ConfidentialHealthQuestionnaire,andAcknowledgementandAssumptionofRiskandReleaseform,enclosingaregistrationdepositof$1000.Youwillbeconsideredqualifiedforthetripwhentheleadershavedeterminedbyconversationwithyouthatyouandthetripseemtobeagoodmatch.Youwillbeformallyaccepted,andyourcheckwillbedeposited,whenthetripleadersconfirmthetriphassufficientnumberofparticipantsandisgoingasplanned.Asecondpaymentof$1000isdueJanuary1,2018.Thefinalbalanceof$495isdueMay1,2018.Depositchecksfromwait-listedapplicantswillnotbecasheduntilweofferthemaspotonthetripANDtheyaccept.Pleasemakepaymentsbycheckpayabletothe“AppalachianMountainClub”andmailtotheaddressshownontheParticipantApplication.

TheAMCAdventureTravelcancellationpolicyisbasedonthefactthatyourcancellationmaynotraisethecosttotheotherparticipantsortotheleaders.Thepublishedminimumpenaltyscheduleis:zerobeforeSeptember30,2017,$300fromOctober1,2017throughFebruary28,2018and$600afterMarch1,2018.Ifactualcosts(expensesalreadyincurredonyourbehalfandanyunavoidablefutureexpensesthatwillbeincurredasaresultofyourregistrationandcancellation)arehigher,theywillbeassessedinstead,unlesstheycanbeappliedtowardanotheracceptableparticipant.Shouldtheleadersbeabletoreplaceyou,youmaybechargedareducedorzeropenalty.Thiswillgenerallynotbedetermineduntilafterthetrip.IfAMCcancelsthetrip,youwillreceiveafullrefundforalldeposits.
