Welcome to the sixth issue of Trekkie Central Supplemental.

In this issue we will be taking a look at four of Starfleets finest, four commanders who when called on have and will go beyond the call of duty when needed.

These officers that we will be looking at are from both official and fan film trek and they are Commander Dao from Star Trek The Helena Chronicles, Sub Commander T’Lorra from Star Trek Odyssey, Major Kira Nerys from Star Trek Deep Space Nine and finally Commander Lefler from both Star Trek The Next Generation and Star Trek Hidden Frontier.

What does it mean to be the first officer of a Starship?

During the early days of space exploration by Starfleet vessels the First Officer turned to have another job as well as in the instance of TPol, Spock and Tackket they were all Science Officers and the First Officer of their respective ships, however this has changed by the time of Next Generation with Riker just servicing as XO of the Enterprise D. Why there was this change is not known but it could be speculated that by the time of Riker the First Officer almost always led the away team on a mission with the Captain staying on board, meaning that to have one person in two senior roles would be detrimental to the running of the ship in the event of an emergency and the First Officer is not onboard.

What is known however is the dedication and loyalty all First Officer show to their Captain, the ship and its crew, the first officer will always be there for anyone who needs him or her.

By the time of The Next Generation is first officer is also is bridge between a ship’s crew and its Captain as established in The Best of Both Worlds (TNG) when Shelby goes behind Rikers back to tell the Captain her plan, and his reaction of telling her that she would wish she were a first year cadet if she ever did that again.

All First Officers would also be willing to lay their lives on the line for their Captain and this again demonstrates a loyalty to the ship and her crew.

So what makes a good first officer? Loyalty is the most important, with the ability to take command of the ship and close second. However loyalty shouldn’t blind the first officer to the fact that his or her captain can make judgement errors and with that in mind the ability to stand up and voice his or her opinion is also very important.~

Personal Profile: Ambitious to prove himself worthy of being joined to a symbiont, after his training period as an Initiate, Jorian Zen joined up in Starfleet as a simple crewman, but soon proved his worth as was given a field commission to the rank of Ensign. He served with distinction while aboard the Excelsior, and developed close attachment to the crew, including building a relationship with the then-Assistant Chief Engineer, Lieutenant Corey Aster. His dream of being joined became possible when his old mentor, Cassius Dao, asked him to be the next host for his symbiont, however the fact that Cassius had broken the taboo of reassociation meant this would be an illegal joining. After some soul searching, Jorian accepted the symbiont, and became Jorian Dao. Now possessing much sought after knowledge of hyperdimensional physics, Jorian became more involved in the frontline battle being waged in the Briar Patch. He was first recruited to the Grey Research Facility, and promoted to junior grade Lieutenant, but his relationship with Aster soon began to suffer as the stronger, more arrogant, Dao persona began putting an emotional distance between the two. Eventually reassigned as Tactical Officer aboard the USS Helena, under Captain Naros, Jorian proved his worth again to his new commander with both his expertise as Jorian, and his knowledge as Dao. Unfortunately, this lead him back into the arms of the new host of his former lover, Morr, and he once again reassociated with her, which ended his relationship with Aster. During the finale days of the war with Siroc, the Grey and the Tholian/Breen Alliance, Dao earned a promotion to First Officer of the Helena, when Theresa Faisel succeeded Naros to the center seat. Although his relationship with Aster had ended, the two remained friends, and he served as Best Man at his wedding to Ro Nevin, and searched for 6 months to find the missing Aster after the disastrous “Iliad” mission. Although initially skeptical, Dao stood by his friend in his efforts to try and find a feasible way of proving that the crew of the missing Starship Odyssey, going to great length to secure an illegal thalaron device in order to power an Omega device. But his dedication to his friend may have cost him his career, as well as the further opportunity to pass on the Dao symbiont now their actions have been uncovered, as well as the life of a dear friend.

Species: Romulan female

Position: Executive Officer

Assignment USS Odyssey (field commission)

Personal Profile: A proud, efficient, and at times, stone-cold warrior, not afraid to challenge those around her, and act in ways that would others cringe in horror, T'Lorra enlisted as an uhlan in the Romulan Star Navy, and so impressed her superiors as she made her way up through the ranks that when she was promoted to SubCommander, during the Tholian conflict, she was placed in command of a Moogai-class warbird. She commanded the Viinerine until it was destroyed during the Romulan Empire's initial skirmishes with invading Archein forces. During the conflict, she became known to the Archeins on a first name basis, and developed an intense hatred towards them. With the Viinerine gone, and all efforts at stopping the Archein unsuccessful, she was assigned by ProCounsel Yeshva as an official Romulan Observer during Starfleet's “Iliad” mission to infiltrate and destroy the Archein's starbase that generated their intergalactic wormhole, as well as the Odyssey's Romulan cloaking device. During the initial mission, she clashed repeatedly with the Odyssey's science officer, Lt. Commander Ro Nevin, feeling insulted she had to report to an officer she considered junior to herself. But when the mission lead to the deaths of the other senior most officers, she had to put these issues aside when Ro took command, despite her own misgivings to his capability. Appointed as acting First Officer, she mocked the idea to follow Starfleet ideals, when their very survival was questionable, but continued to follow Ro's orders. Again clashing with the Odyssey's chief of security, Lieutenant Maya Stadi, she urged more decisive action be taken against the Archein, instead of running, but after a mission where she nearly got herself killed while buying the Odyssey escape time from attacking Archeins and marauding Kelvins, she and Stadi found a measure of respect for each other. When Odyssey was captured by one of the Archein's client citizen races, she was personally interrogated by the military leader of the Archein, General Morrigu, whom she had met during their invasion attempts. She impressed him to the point where he refused an order to have her killed, arguing she was more valuable alive. When the Odyssey crew did escape, she was able to use her experience to help 'convince' a young Archein slave who had been blinded and abandoned on the Odyssey to assist in their efforts to find a way home to the Milky Way.

Species: Bajoran female

Assignment: Deep Space Nine

Personal Profile: A child of her time, Kira Nerys was born into the Cardassian Occupation of Bajor, losing her mother and father to the fight, as she herself defended her planet. A devout believer in the Prophets, she would willingly lay down her life to free Bajor, and was part of the effort that finally overthrew the Cardassian forces. Granted a commission by the Militia, she soon antagonised the wrong people in her government with her objections to requesting Federation assistance, and was assigned as the Liaison Officer to the newly minted Deep Space Nine, a former mining base in orbit of Bajor. With the dual role of First Officer, she soon managed to put her doubts aside, and worked well with the Starfleet officers assigned to man and run the station, when it moved itself to protect and defend the newly discovered wormhole to the Gamma Quadrant. Over the next seven years, she became an integral part of the Deep Space Nine team, looking out for Bajor's interests, and defending it alongside her Starfleet comrades. She formed friendships with them, as well as broke out of her hardened exterior she had worn since childhood, and even managed to push past her ingrained distrust of Cardassians by working with several different representatives of the culture over her time on DS9. When war with the Dominion broke out, she stayed true to the Starfleet cause, leading a resistance cell on an occupied DS9, before resuming her place as First Officer under the Starfleet regime, and even accepted a temporary rank as a Commander in Starfleet to better lead an effort to help the budding Cardassian military resistance fight against the Dominion. When the war was over, she was forced to say goodbye to her close friend Benjamin Sisko when he left this plane of existence, as well as her lover Odo, who realised he needed to rejoin his people, the leaders of the Dominion. Assuming command of DS9, she underwent a personal trial when she was exiled from their religion after uploading an apparently heretical text to the Bajoran data net, as she believed her people had the right to choose what to believe. But she never wavered in her belief in what the Prophets had planned for her, and carried on despite this personal setback. She commanded DS9 during a crisis dealing with a parasitic offshoot of the Trill symbionts, and the death of her former lover, First Minister Shakaar. When Bajor was finally admitted into Starfleet, she was one of the first of the Militia to be absorbed into Starfleet, retiring her rank of Colonel for the rank of Captain. A very physical person, Kira is currently dealing with the shock of having her heart replaced by a synthetic one after a brutal attack on her and her security chief by a Jem'Hadar soldier sent by Odo to act as an observer to the Alpha Quadrant.

Name: Robin Lefler

Species: Human female

Rank: Commander

Position: Executive Officer

Assignment: USS Excelsior, on detached duty to USS Helena.

Previous Assignments: Chief Engineer, USS ExcelsiorChief of Operations, USS ExcaliburMission Specialist, USS Enterprise

Personal Profile: An eager and quirky young woman from an engineering family, Robin Lefler quickly impressed her superiors, earning a position as a Mission Specialist while serving aboard the flagship of the Federation, the USS Enterprise, NCC-1701-D. She distinguished herself when she helped uncover a conspiracy to use the Enterprise crew to facilitate a takeover of the Federation by one of its lesser members. She was also known for her eccentric habit of memorising and quoting her “Lefler's Laws”, a series of rules she said to live by. She transferred to the refitted Ambassador-class USS Excalibur and served as Operations Officer, learning under the tutelage of the chief engineer, eventually earning the rank of Lieutenant Commander and the position of Chief Engineer of the USS Excelsior. When her friend and former shipmate Elizabeth Shelby joined the Excelsior crew, it seemed that Lefler had her dream assignment. But a pirate named Sha'Kev ruined the idyllic life when he kidnapped her and two colleagues, killing one of them, a good friend of hers, an experience that scarred her for life, and prevented her from making any lasting relationships for several years. During the Briar Patch conflicts, she continued to serve with distinction, and when Shelby took command of the Excelsior, she named Lefler as her XO before Naros was placed in the position by higher powers. When Naros finally took command of his own vessel, Shelby moved Lefler into the position she had wanted to for the past several years, so the engineer traded her beloved engines for the challenges of command. She had some trouble letting go and handing the reins to her successor, Corey Aster, but eventually made peace with her new role. She even managed to lay the demons of her past to rest and became acquainted with the chief engineer of the USS Valley Forge, Benjamin Nostrom, who eventually succeeded Corey Aster as Chief Engineer of the Excelsior, allowing the two to become even closer, and finally, engaged. However, when Aster was recovered by the USS Helena, Lefler took leave to comfort him on the loss of his husband, and soon became caught up in his efforts to prove that Nevin and the crew of the Odyssey were still alive. She played a key role in verifying the visions he had experienced, and convincing Admiral Knapp to sanction a dangerous mission to recover a thalaron device and access to Omega research. In the end, her willingness to do whatever it took to help her friend cost her dearly, when their experimental Omega core became unstable, and Lefler was killed in the ensuing blast, that destroyed subspace over an entire sector of space.
