MARCH 1, TUESDAY

ARIIVE HILOArrive at Hilo Airport on the Big Island ofHawaii. You will be met by one of your guidesand transferred to beautiful Reed’s Island, tothe Thomas Guard House. You will spend fivenights at this exclusive historic mansionsurrounded by tropical rainforests,waterfalls, rivers carved by volcanoes, andgorgeous gardens. The epitome ofexclusivity and comfort, The Thomas GuardHouse will be your home away from homefor the next six days.

In the late afternoon, walk through thepeaceful Liliuokalani Gardens, named afterHawaii's last reigning monarch, QueenLiliuokalani. Located on Hilo's Banyan Drive,this authentic Japanese garden wasdedicated in 1917 as a tribute to Hawaii'sfirst Japanese immigrants, who worked inthe island’s sugar cane fields. Thisbeautifully landscaped park features archingred bridges over fishponds, rock gardens,pagodas, Japanese stone lanterns, and ateahouse. Views of Hilo Bay and Moku Ola(Coconut Island) enhance this remarkablelandscape.

MARCH 2, WEDNESDAY

AKAKA FALLS, RICHARDSONBEACH & MAUNA KEA SUMMIT OBSERVATORYEnjoy the daily breakfast served at theThomas Guard House on the open vernada,or lanai. After breakfast, tour Akaka FallsState Park, 14 miles north along theHamakua Coast. Visit two gorgeouswaterfalls on a pleasant 0.4-mile uphill hike

that takes you through a lush rainforestfilled with wild orchids, bamboo groves, anddraping ferns.

Follow the paved footpath to the 100-footKahuna Falls. Continue to follow the looparound the bend, where you'll discovertowering Akaka Falls, dropping 442 feet intoa stream-eroded gorge. Beautiful Akaka Fallsis perhaps Hawaii Island's most famouswaterfall. Easily accessible, this hike takesless than an hour.

Visit Hakalau Beach with its old mill andbeautiful beach park. An impressive metalbridge was built here in 1940s to connectthe main loop on the Big Island.

Return to downtown Hilo for lunch at CaféPesto, which offers a colorful menu of locallygrown organic greens, freshly caught fish,and delicious pastas and pizzas. Afterward,tour Richardson Beach on the Four MilesDrive to experience its rocky seawalls andparks where locals swim, dive, surf, and fish.

In the afternoon, depart for a tour of theMauna Kea Observatories. The observatoriesare an independent collection ofastronomical research facilities located onthe summit of Mauna Kea, home to 13 of thelargest and most advanced telescopes in theworld. At almost 14,000 feet, the location isideal for astronomical viewing because of itsdark skies, towering position above most ofthe water vapor in the atmosphere, clean air,good weather, and an almost equatoriallocation. MARCH 3, THURSDAY

IMILOA ASTRONOMY CENTER &HILO’S HISTORIC DOWNTOWNIn the morning, visit the world-famous ImiloaAstronomy Center, a public science centerdedicated to sharing and interpreting theastronomy conducted on the summit of

Mauna Kea. Imiloa presents the astronomyatop Mauna Kea within the framework ofnative Hawaiian traditions of navigation andexploration. Tour the facilities and learnabout the ongoing scientific and culturalresearch within the context of thecommunity. Watch a show at the world’s first3-D digital dome in the planetarium andstroll through gardens featuring native andPolynesian-introduced plant life.

Visit the College of Hawaiian Language foran introduction to its Hawaiian Cultural andLanguage Preservation program. Theprogram is being tested as a template torestore and preserve indigenous language.

In the afternoon, tour Hilo’s historicdowntown, Hawaii Island’s biggest smalltown featuring century-old woodenstorefronts housing a variety ofsophisticated galleries, shops, restaurants,and cultural sites. Start your walk onKamehameha Avenue facing beautiful HiloBay and discover the variety of shops,restaurants, and attractions. The PacificTsunami Museum chronicles the cataclysmicnatural disasters of 1946 and 1960 thatforced Hilo to rebuild farther inland usingparkland as a buffer.

In the evening, savor a home-cooked dinnerfeaturing fresh farm-to-table delicaciesprepared by a local Hawaiian chef. (B,D)

Hawaii’s outstanding natural environment,Hawaii Volcanoes National Park was desig-nated as an International Biosphere Re-serve in 1980 and a UNESCO WorldHeritage Site in 1987. The park gives scien-tists insight into the birth of the HawaiianIsland and is the location of ongoing stud-ies into the processes of volcanism. Experi-ence the dramatic volcanic landscapes andrare flora and fauna found here. The bestand closest place to observe a volcaniceruption is from Jaggar Museum overlook,and other vantage points at the summit ofKilauea provide views of Halema'uma'uCrater.During daylight, the robust plume of vol-canic gas is a constant and dramatic re-minder of the molten rock churning in alava lake beneath the crater floor. Aftersunset, Halema'uma'u continues to thrillvisitors with a vivid glow that illuminatesthe clouds and the plume as it billows intothe night sky.An optional four-mile hike of Kilauea Iki trailthrough the lush crater is an invigoratingand intimate way to experience the vol-canic terrain and ecology. A box lunch in-cluding fruit and sandwiches is provided.

After exploring the park, settle in for a sun-set dinner. Then, emerge to watch the vol-cano glow at night near the crater. (B,L,D

MARCH 5, SATURDAY

HILO FARMER’S MARKET,WAIPIO VALLEY, TROPICALBOTANICAL GARDENIn the morning, tour the bustling HiloFarmers’ Market. Afterward, drive to WaipioValley, and immerse yourself in thisdramatic landscape surrounded by cliffsthousands of feet high. The valley is thechildhood home of King Kamehameha I—and an important center for political andreligious life in Hawaii. Waipio Valley wasonce the home of thousands of NativeHawaiians. Today, fewer than 100 residentslive among the waterfalls, taro fields, andrivers permeating the valley. Hawaii Island'stallest waterfall, Hiilawe Falls, cascadesdown 1,300 feet in the back of Waipio.Enjoy a picnic lunch on the beach.

In the afternoon, tour the famous HawaiiTropical Botanical Garden. This 40-acre“garden in a valley on the ocean” situatedon the lush Hamakua Coast is a naturallyformed greenhouse benefiting from fertile

volcanic soil and natural protection fromtradewinds. Photographers, gardeners,botanists, scientists, and nature loversfrom around the world are drawn to thismuseum of living plants. Over 2,000species, representing more than 125families and 750 genera, are found in thisone-of-a-kind garden. Throughout thisgarden valley, nature trails meanderthrough the tropical rainforest, crossingbubbling streams, passing several beautifulwaterfalls, and offering exciting oceanvistas along the rugged Pacific coast.

In the evening, enjoy a special farewell atthe Thomas Guard House, where adelectable Hawaiian banquet accompaniedby Hawaiian cultural experts, Manu Josiahand Leilehua Yuen, make for the perfectend of your authentic Hawaiian experience.(B,L,D)

Cancellation penalties basedon the date of receipt of written notice are as follows: 91 or more daysprior to departure, a cancellation fee of $500 per person is retained; 90-46 days prior to departure, $1,500 per person; 45-31 days prior todeparture, $2,500 per person; 30-0 days prior to departure, no refundis made.

AIR ARRANGEMENTS: Air cancellations and penalities are based oneach carrier and ticket. Be sure to review these policies beforepurchasing air.

CHANGES IN ITINERARY AND COSTS: The itinerary is subject tochange at the discretion of HAA Travels and the tour operator.Deviations from the scheduled itinerary are at the expense of theindividual.
