for the year (6 issues)

I t’s finally arrived! Yes, I’m talking about

summer, at least I think it has. At the

moment, it’s raining cats and dogs and in

the low 60’s. Hmmm, I’m hoping June turns

around soon, so that everyone gets a chance

to do some much anticipated vacationing

(with your pets hopefully). I am so excited

about our travel feature covering local

vacation hotspot, Newport. I love day trips

people watch with my dogs. There are some great places to stay, and some unique

activities just for you and your dog. Check out page 10 and start planning your next

I also know that many of you are hitting the dog parks much more, now that they

are no longer full sheets of ice! For those of you in the Pawtucket area, the new

Pawtucket Dog park at Slater Park has arrived just in time. To help with your dog

park visits, our resident expert Katenna Jones has put together an informative list of

dog park “superlatives” on page 26...see what kind of dog park dog you have!

I also wanted to remind you that The Animal Print is still searching for our “dog mom

of the year”. We have been selecting deserving dog moms for the last few years, in order

to pamper and shower them with gifts. So don’t delay - nominate your favorite dog

mom asap. You can find out all of the details on page 16.

Whether you get a chance to vacation with your furry family in Newport, hit the dog parks, or just hang out in your own backyard, I hope you have a truly amazing summer!

“Trouble”, The Maltese Who Received Leona Helmsley’s Riches, Joins Her Owner In The Afterlife.Leona Helmsley’s pampered pooch “Trouble,” who inherited $12 million (only part of her fortune) from the real estate mogul, has died at the age of 12.That’s 84 in dog years. Like many Americans, the pampered Maltese retired to Florida in 2007, shortly after Helmsley died. Carl Lekic, the general manager of the Helmsley Sandcastle hotel in Sarasota, cared for her.“Trouble was cremated, and her remains are being privately retained,” spokeswoman Eileen Sullivan said.“The funds held in trust for her care have reverted to The Leona M. and Harry B. For Stressed Bees, the Glass Is Half Empty When people are depressed or anxious, they are much more likely to see their glass as half empty than half full. In tough times, evidence of that same pessimistic outlook can be seen in dogs, rats, and birds. Now, researchers reporting online in Current Biology, show that bees, too, share those very same hallmarks of negative emotion.

Dear editor,(subject: unbelievable dog story)One of our members owns a Husky puppy, (an older women and her older son). They owned a condo (that normally allowed dogs), but the condo complex said that their Husky was not allowed in the complex; it was on the bad dog insurance list. They loved this dog like a family member, so they actually sold their condo, took a loss, and lived with relatives for a while, until they found a suitable home to raise their husky. I think that this shows that they took the responsibility of dog ownership seriously. How many other people would go this far for a new puppy?JoanneGoldmark Federal Credit Union

Dear Joanne, Thank you so much for sharing this story. It’s nice to hear about the folks who truly understand what love and commitment means. We hear so many stories of dogs given up because people move and this makes me happy to hear something much different. Thanks again,Stephanie Georgiaeditor

Who Is Hunter & Tell Us Why He’s So Special. Hunter was born January 19th 2008. He hails from Kuroi

Kao Akitas (I believe it means “black face” in Japanese)

located in Indianapolis, IN. His parents are both champions

and his father’s great grandpa (on mothers side) is a very

well known winning Akita, OB’J “The Widow Maker”.

I really don’t know where to start in describing why Hunter is

special. It probably starts with the fact that anyone who has

met him has thought he was a beautiful cuddly great dog.

He attracts people to him, even those that say “I was afraid

to go up to him since he’s so big.” Something about

Hunters demeanor makes you feel comfortable that he won’t

be aggressive (it has to be that beautiful face of his!!). The

fact that he loves kids and kids love him. He’s my baby boy

and we just love him.

Why Did Hunter Want To Be On The Cover?Hunter wanted to be on the cover, because Akitas are not

the most popular of dogs. They are known to be dog

aggressive and very protective to the point of being

considered a bully but we have learned that that behavior

is not a certainty if you socialize them well and understand

that the breed requires constant training. So Hunter just

Introducing Hunter!

wanted everyone to know Akitas can be well behaved

teddy bears (although large, strong Teddy Bears), playful

and very social.

I also wanted to support PARL because every time I see

Hunter playing in the yard with Zoe, every time I see them

laying contently at the foot of our bed, every time we go to

Grandma and Grandpas’ house and they get treats it makes

you realize that every dog deserves to have a good life, and

be happy with someone that truly cares for them and about

them. The donations Gina and I make to PARL is a small

way we can help another animals life be as happy as I

know Hunters is.

What Was His Photoshoot Like? He LOVED his photo shoot. He loved being off leash, he

loved meeting new friends, he loved seeing the ocean

together with smelling all those wonderful smells (dead bird,

dead crab etc…)…maybe wonderful dog smells! He is also

kind of a ham and sometimes I think he actually knows

he’s handsome.

I think he wouldn’t mind some modeling assignments as

long as it doesn’t interfere with his digging, chasing birds,

squirrels and anything else that moves!

For the last few years, The Animal Print, along with internationally recognized photographer Traer Scott have joined forces

to offer a very unique donation to The Providence Animal Rescue League. The winning bidder of their live auction at

“The Rescue” wins the opportunity to be on our cover with the photo taken by Traer Scott; we are thrilled to be able to

support PARL in this way! The Animal Print, Traer Scott and PARL would like to give a big thank you to Steven Criscione

for his generous donation and to Hunter for being such a big, sweet and amazing model!

Newport is famous for its Gilded Age mansions, America’s Cup race, Cliff Walk and other spectacular seaside lookouts, colonial buildings, jazz and folk festivals, and more. What you may not know about Newport is that visiting is also great fun with your dog! There are a slew of dog friendly hotels, restaurants and activities to do with your pet and we’ve been digging around for our favorites to help you and fido have a dream vacation!

Hugo relaxes on the porch of the Sanford-Covell Villa Marina

11Whether your tastes are upscale, ultra modern, classic or you enjoy being in the middle of it all, Newport offers a little

something for all tastes! When traveling for the weekend or longer with your pet, the first thing you’ll need to do is secure pet friendly lodging. We’ve found some amazing accomodations that offer such amenities as sweeping views, heated saltwater pools, and loca-tions in the midst of the action. Thank you to Andrea McHugh of The Newport & Bristol County Convention & Visitors Bureau and Sarah Heaton for their help in our search for the perfect pet friendly places and activities!

Where To Stay With Your DogThe Sanford-Covell Villa Marina Nestled on the harbor, with spectacular views of Newport Bridge and Goat Island, The Sanford-Covell Villa Marina is a dream for the traveler with dogs and in our opinion has something for everyone. The sunsets seen from the terrace are spectacular and the porch has become a virtual Newport icon. Not only do they allow well behaved pets in any of their three pet friendly rooms, but they also have a live in standard poodle, Sasha, to greet guests. Sasha and our pups dashed around the yard while we relaxed on the porch. The Sanford-Covell houses an eclectic mix of period furnishings, staff who is incredibly knowledgeable of the history of the home, modern conveniences, and is just blocks from down-town. This is the place to be! Oh, and did we mention... it has a heated salt water pool and hot tub! No size limit on dogs, but dogs should be people and pet friendly. $20 pet fee.72 Washington St., Newport, RI - 401.847.0206www.sanford-covell.com

Bannisters Wharf AccomodationsIf you’re more of a party animal and love to be in the middle of it all, then the Bannister Wharf hotel is a great choice. Offering modest accommodations with views to die for from your own deck overlooking the marina. You don’t stay here to sit in your room, you stay here to enjoy the sites, sounds and smells that Newport has to offer. All of their rooms and suites are pet friendly, but I suggest you bring a dog whose well acclimated to noise as Bannisters Wharf is quite bustling during the summer. $20 per pet, no size limit...no limit on number of dogs but should be well behaved.1 Bannister’s Wharf, Newport, RI www.bannistersnewport.com

Hyatt Regency NewportFor the ultimate in luxury and for those who want a little pampering for themselves and their pooches, the Hyatt Regency is the perfect place to stay. The Hyatt will happily take pets under 75lbs. with a limit of two dogs per room. Keep in mind that there is a $75 fee per stay, per pet. They have many pet friendly rooms conveniently located on the first floor and well behaved dogs may stay in your room when you want to head out sans-pooch. Dogs are allowed anywhere inside and outside the hotel except food and beverage outlets.1 Goat Island, Newport, RI Hotel Phone: 401-851-1234, Reservations: 877-411-3436www.newport.hyatt.com

We all know someone who has given of themselves, their time (and of their wallets) to help a dog in need. Let us now give them a huge resounding Thank You!Attention!! Calling all fantastic dog moms!! Mother’s Day is looming large on the horizon, and The Animal Print and our sponsors don’t want to leave dog moms out in the doghouse! We all know someone with children who are...ur, more furry and low to the ground that deserve some recognition. So here is your chance to let that special doggy mother in your life know just how appreciated she is:

Here’s how to win!Write a short and to the point endorsement (500 words or less) about the woman you would like to nominate as The Animal Print’s 3rd Annual Dog Mom of the Year. Make sure you tell us exactly why you believe this doggy mother is so extraordinary and wonderful. The entries will be judged by a panel of professionals in the pet care field.

TIPS on What to Write:Perhaps you know a lady who has rescued an unwanted doggy child from the pound or cold streets? Giving them a life and love that oth-ers who came before had denied them, and giving them that second chance stray animals so desperately need and deserve. Or a woman who has taken in a special needs dog, whether they suffered medi-cal problems or behavioral challenges, sacrificing time and money to selflessly help a very special dog in need. Maybe you have a wonder-ful dog mom in your life who comes home after a hard day at work and doesn’t plop down on the sofa to watch TV and drink beer… but instead takes multiple eager – to – play pooches for a long romp in the park and cooks them homemade meals to boot. The winning Dog Mom will recieve oodles of gifts, pampering and ap-pear in the next issue of the Animal Print along with the winning entry. So C’mon folks! Get out that pen and paper and give the incredible doggy mom YOU know a chance to be treated like the star she is.

Please email your nominations to:The Animal Print Magazine [email protected] sure to include both your nominee’s name, her dog’s name, your name and relation to nominee, address, phone number and email. Deadline Is August 31, 2011

A road trip to the beach can be some of the best times for you and your dog. You can’t beat the fresh salt air, and the surf and sand. My shepard mix just loves the off-leash

beach in Barrington, RI that we visit often in the summer and I love watching him frolicking and playing to his little hearts content. To make your day go smoothing we would like to share a few helpful tips to make it fun and safe for you and fido:

Follow the Rules: Check with your local beach to see if dogs are allowed. Some beaches with allow your beach buddy to tag along but he or she must be on a leash at all times during the summer in RI, and many will only allow your dog in the early morning or after 5pm.

Floating Toys: Bring some fun toys your dog loves to chase like a ball that will float, or a Frisbee.

Fresh Water and Shade: Make sure to set up an umbrella or canopy for a shady rest spot and bring plenty of fresh water so your dog is not tempted to drink sea water, which can make him dog sick or worse, on the way home!

Sunburn: Dogs do sunburn, especially those with short hair, white fur, and pink. Limit your dog’s exposure and apply sunscreen to his ears and nose 30 minutes before going outside and re-apply after swimming just like people should.

“Netop” is the word Roger Williams took from the Narrangansetts as the term for “Friend.” And it’s also the name of a dog that paints pictures and sells them, through his agent and human companion, Jackie Karch Keach, a long time art teacher in the Providence Public Schools.Netop came to town to have a coffee at the terrace of Seven Stars bakery cafe. He came here for a purpose, not just for a social call. Jackie translated for him. “We visit the animal shel-ters and use the profits from Netop’s masterpieces to educate people about the rights of our fellow creatures. They suffer as we do, from fear and loneliness, from hunger and pain. They enjoy themselves as we do also, from fun and play and good will and creativity.” I gave Netop a congratulatory pat on the head. His work is not new to me. I have collected some of his pawprints as imprinted upon ceramic times. His paintings, done with a brush held in his jaws (yes, this is true!) sell for about $500.00, half a hundred, and it is all contributed generously to The Cause. Jackie and her supportive librarian husband Bill, and Netop’s own longtime four-legged pal “Ruby” brought me a coffee--in a mug--and we sat among the English sparrows and discussed the plight of pets. “If the human ages and goes to a nursing home that forbids dogs and cats--or birds for that matter--what’s to become of the middle-aged dependent? It’s a special blessing to adopt...not a puppy or kitten, but a mature “netop” that shouldn’t go to a pen, or worse, but to a good and caring home.”

{Wandering Tails} by Mike Fink

I tend to wax philosophical and grandiose about such mat-ters. “Roger Williams declared that his colony would serve as a “shelter for persons distressed” and maybe his promise was a prediction!” I proclaimed, perhaps a bit pompously.” It just so happened that I had met my guests, or hosts, after a visit to the Roger Williams Memorial on North Main Street. I had read, and learned by heart, the pledge printed at the site of our founder’s first well, at which he named us “Providence”--meaning, after all, that we should provide for one another as the Creator provides for one and all. Maybe he was thinking, subconsciously, of animal rights, which are guaranteed in the Bibles of the world, from Eden to all the Pounds on the planet! So much for the propaganda of Netop. So much for his troop of friends, Ruby, Jackie, and Bill!

The Best Natural Product You can Give Your Dog!

Little Stingers: Dogs can get bitten by sea lice and stung by jellyfish. Check on local beach conditions to make sure they will be safe for your dog.

Rip Currents: Be careful letting your dog swim in strong tides and know if rip currents have been reported!

Keep Your Dog In Check: Keep an eye on your dog and do not forget to make him take rest/water breaks. If your dog is out of shape, don’t encourage him to run on the sand. Running on a beach is strenuous exercise, and a dog that is out of shape can easily pull a tendon or ligament.

Smelly Dead Things: Remember that many items washed ashore, like fishing lines, litter, plant-life, and dead fish, may not be safe for your dog. When he goes exploring, keep a close eye on the objects he finds.

Rinse Off: Ocean water can damage your dog’s fur and coat and make him smell later, so rinse your dog off at the end of the day; this will also help protect the interior of your car. Save a jug of fresh water just for this!

ReminderALWAYS clean up after your dog and do not bury it in the sand. Bring plenty of bags and a scoop to pick up after your dog’s business!

The beach is such a fun place to take your dog, and a per-fect summertime activity. Be safe and enjoy your day at the beach!

Best DressedYou know the one. The dog that’s in a different tutu each day of the week? While cute to some, wearing clothes in a multi-dog arena can really set your pup up to fail. Clothes can mask important body language cues, and can also be easy “latch on” points for obnoxious play. So loose the polos, and get those dogs running commando! You can always redress post-play.

Class Flirt Well, maybe not “flirt” so much as the dog that humps every-thing that isn’t nailed down. Yeah, that guy. He has no business in a dog park with manners like that. Maybe better named “Most Likely to Instigate a Fight.” Dogs can hump for a variety of reasons, including an attempt to dominate, sexual interest, or overexcitement. Occasional humpty hump is ok, and natural!

But the dog that mounts everything with a pulse (and occasional items without a pulse) is poor mannered and inappropriate in a dog-park. Neutering, early socialization, and proper training will cut down on the humpity harassment.

Drama Queen Oh, the draaaama of it all! Yipe! That dog looked at me funny! Eeek, that dog barked at me. If you’ve ever stepped on the paw of some dogs, one might think you cut it off with a spoon. Mamma, mamma, save me! Drama like this should be ignored, or you will increase the drama, and before you know it the dog will be on the next train to Julliard. That said, savvy owners MUST know when a cry is drama and to be ignored, and when a cry is true fear or pain and must be heeded.

By Katenna Jones, ScM, Associate CAAB, CABC, CPDT

If you’ve ever been to a dog park, you’ve seen them all: the crazy bulldozers, the obnoxious humpers, and the shy loners. If you haven’t been to a dog park, and you love dogs – I encourage you to grab a latte and just watch the action! Even if your dog isn’t exactly “dog park material” or if you don’t even have a dog – go anyway. I find the variety of classmates fascinating.

Most OutspokenScent hound lovers unite! Some dogs just love the sound of their own voice. Keep in mind, yelling at barking simply adds noise to noise – so ignore the barking and reward the quiet. Another option is to put the barking on command (ie speak command) and put the quiet on command. Dogs who love to bark can’t be expected to stop any more than dogs who love to run can be expected to stop. So let them bark it out, but train them to stop when told. Also, keep in mind, loud dog parks are annoying to nearby residents and are a quick way to get them shut down – so tend to your loud lassie and get that barking under wraps.

Class AthleteFaster than a speeding Jack Russell, more aerodynamic than a greyhound! Any dog with a bad case of the zoomies is a riot to watch and belongs at a dog park. Let him kick up the dust and send mud flying. Watch him now, wash him later. There’s noth-ing more beautiful than seeing a Yorkie get out his yayas or a newfie get goofy. Don’t interfere, exercise is here!

Class BusybodyI like to call these guys “The Enforcers.” They’re the ones who rush the gate every time a new dog comes in. I’m not talking about “Nicest” who politely greets every new dog – I mean the one who gets his nose right up in the new guy’s business and is all over them as soon as the gate opens. Or he’s the first one to jump into a fight. This sort of behavior is rude and inappropri-ate. Keep tabs on your busybody. When you see a new classmate entering the yard, or a skirmish breaking out, get your nose bag out of the way by physically removing him or – preferably – recalling the dog on command. No one likes a busybody!

The LonerThese guys are exactly who they seem. They want to be left alone to sniff and poo in peace. This is my dog. She occasion-ally breaks into a pit fit and does the boot scoot where her back end tries to outrun her front end, but for the first 15 minutes or so, she wants to be left alone. I wait outside of the dark park and assess the whole class to make sure there’s no busybodies or flirts in there, before my loner enters. She needs her space, she needs to warm up. If your dog is a loner and doesn’t ever seem to warm up to the classmates, it might be best to visit the park when there are no other dogs or avoid it all together. Like people, not all dogs want company from others of their species. Loners may be best off being, well, loners.

Most Likely to Go to the PrincipleIf you frequent a dog park long enough, you know which dogs to avoid. When you see that dog coming, you leash your dog and get out ASAP. It’s like the lady whose kid is a real pain and she thinks he’s the best thing since Kongs. than paying attention to their dog. Please, don’t be that dog owner! If your dog is rude, or aggressive, or gets into skirmishes or full on fights more than a few times – don’t bring your dog to a park! There are places and times – and trainers! – for dogs with issues. And please, pay attention to your dog. Another person should not be responsible for getting your dog out of trouble. Dog parks require your focus and at-tention just as much – if not more so – than any other place. Please allow the public and their pets the privilege of visiting a dog park unmolested and unaccosted.

“Most Responsible”I’d like to see this one go to each of you! If you visit a dog park, please remember: • Please supervise your own dog at all times • No food or treats of any kind (for humans or for dogs) • All dogs must have a collar with current license • All dogs must have current rabies and other vaccinations • Please keep sick or injured dogs at home • All dogs entering the park must be spayed or neutered. • All dogs must be at least 12 weeks of age • Small dogs and puppies must be in separate,

assigned area from large dogs • Please clean up after your dog • Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult • No more than 3 dogs per person at any time • No smoking • No littering

Now get out to the park and see what superlatives your pooch possesses!

33{In Memory}

loved squeaky balls and had a favorite stuffed lamby doodle. She loved car and boat rides and feeling the breeze in her fur. Walks were her favorite activity, followed closely by digging up our yard and getting belly rubs. She was taken too soon and very quickly by aggressive cancer. We made the extremely difficult decision to let her rest forever before she suffered unnecessarily. Kiley was a constant companion. A true friend. Rest in Peace, sweet Kiley.

On the day we picked up Kiley, we only knew she was from Kentucky, brought to New Hampshire by a rescue

league and was approximately a year old. She was a mixed breed of who knows what, but we really didn’t care. When we arrived on the adoption day, she was the only dog that wasn’t a puppy. But she was playful, silly, energetic and ours. That first night in her new home, she fell asleep with her head on my husband’s lap. She knew she belonged. Like so many dogs, Kiley was a true friend and loyal companion. What made Kiley special were her silly little mannerisms. Kiley was very chatty and could ‘wooo wooo’ with the best of them. Her ears crinkled when she was happy and her bum wagged when she was just over the moon. When our daughter was born, Kiley preferred to be stationed in her bedroom before she fell asleep. She was a protector. She was so close to her family that we had to work with her on her separation anxiety which got much better with time. She was such a social butterfly, walks were sometimes an exercise in patience because she simply had to meet the other dogs she encountered on the way. Kiley had this funny habit of taking one of our shoes into her bed. She never chewed them, just wanted our smell right near her so she could fall asleep. Only two days before she passed, Kiley had taken one of my shoes into the yard. Kiley loved to swim and chase birds and squirrels. She
