……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… PHILIPPINE TRAVEL SALES MANUAL 1 CEBU General Description The province of Cebu is an elongated island with a mountain chain crossing from north to south; long and narrow - it stretches 200 kilometers and is only 40 kilometers at its widest points - but it is the center of commerce, industry and education in the region. It is, in fact, the international gateway to the Visayas. Being a domestic hub for the Visayas and Mindanao, it is the focal point of growth and development in the South. Situated at 562 kilometers south of Manila, the province of Cebu is composed of the cities of Cebu, Mandaue, Lapulapu, Danao, Toledo and Talisay and 47 towns or municipalities. With nine universities, 21 colleges and 13 technical institutes, the province is the seat of learning in the South. Its capital, Cebu City, is the country's oldest city, having been established in the early 1700s. Often called the "Queen City of the South" and the Seat of Christianity in the Philippines, Cebu City is a unique blend of tropical paradise and business haven. In a survey of the cities of Asia, Asiaweek (October 25, 1996) named Cebu City the "eighth most livable city in Asia" and was the only Philippine city in the survey's Top Ten. Livable and lively, yet Cebu is steeped in a rich historic past –from the pre-colonial times (there are archaeological evidence indicating it was already a settlement site as early as the tenth century) to the time the great explorer Ferdinand Magellan planted on April 14, 1521 the wooden cross to mark the beginning of the Christianization of the island and the rest of the archipelago. For the Cebuanos (and all Filipinos in general), the replica of the cross now housed in the kiosk built on the hallowed spot where Magellan first planted it, has remained the symbol of faith, along side with the Basilica del Santo Nino where the country's oldest and most precious Christian relic, the Santo Nino, is enshrined. The Cebuanos, who are extremely proud of this cultural and historical heritage that has endured through the centuries, also treasure the first Spanish fort established in the Philippines: Fort San Pedro which is a triangular area with a circumference of 1,248 feet enclosed by 20 feet high, 18 feet thick walls and with a gate marked with the seal of the Spanish King. Aside from its historical attractions, Cebu is the traveler's fantasy of a tropical island – balmy weather, crystalline waters, pristine beaches with palm trees, hibiscus and bougainvilleas on their fringes, mangoes and coconut drinks for the asking in luxurious resorts with all the frills of modern living. Cebu is also a cosmopolitan city with all modern conveniences and amenities: excellent accommodations like city hotels and beach resorts, fine restaurants, exciting nightlife and special interest activities like golf and water sports, most specially diving and snorkeling in exceptional sites. Cebu is a shopper's paradise with its thriving arts and crafts industries (notably shell craft, guitar-making, weaving, leather craft, and bamboo and rattan furniture crafts now getting world renowned) and various department stores that offer the best bargains. How to get there The Province of Cebu is accessible by land, sea or air transport and once in Cebu, varied modes of transportation take one around the different tourist and commercial attractions. By Air The Mactan-Cebu International Airport serves various international destinations of Philippine Airlines (PAL), Cebu Pacific, Asiana Airlines, Silk Air, Malaysia Airlines, and domestic destinations of PAL, Cebu Pacific, SEAIR, Asian Spirit and Air Philippines. By Sea The Cebu Port, one of the busiest ports in the country, receives several passenger and cargo ships daily servicing the Cebu-Manila and vice-versa route and daily trips to the different major cities in the Visayan and Mindanao such as Tagbilaran, Dumaguete, Ormoc, Cagayan de Oro, Ozamis, General Santos and Surigao. There are also fast crafts operating in Cebu that service the Cebu-Tagbilaran, Cebu-Dumaguete and Cebu-Ormoc and vice-versa routes. It usually takes at least two hours to reach said destinations. Various native motorized outrigger canoes called banca are popularly used for inter-island travel adventure or locally called 'island hopping'. These boats can be rented from various resorts offering island tour packages or from any boat operators around Cebu's premium island resorts like Mactan, Malapascua, Bantayan and Camotes. Most diving operators usually have their own bancas for diving tours to some of the best dive sites in the island. Locals also ride the banca in traveling to the neighboring islands. By Land Various modes of land transport abound in Cebu province, ranging from colorful jeepneys and buses to taxis, tricycles, multicabs, trisikads (pedicabs) and habal-habals (motorcycle taxis). Taxis and jeepneys are the most popular modes of transport within the Metro Cebu area. Metered taxis, as well as jeepneys, are generally available in the downtown areas and in the vicinity of hotels, restaurants, shopping malls and entertainment centers within the metro. In fact, the telephone numbers of taxi companies are listed in the local telephone directory so that one can just call if ever taxi services are needed. Jeepneys, too, can be found almost anywhere within the metro area. At present, the minimum jeepney fare is P7 for the first five kilometers. To reach the cities and municipalities outside Metro Cebu, there are buses and vehicles-forhire available round the clock at the North Bus Terminal for areas in the north and the South Bus Terminal for areas in the south. Travelers can choose between airconditioned and nonairconditioned buses while vehicles-for-hire are usually airconditioned vans. Tourist Attractions BANTAYAN ISLAND Bantayan, Cebu Located in the northwestern tip of Cebu, serene and tranquil and bestowed with white sandy beaches, Bantayan Island is a favorite holiday haven, especially during the Lenten season. Here, the observance of Holy Week is highlighted by grand processions of about 20 well-decorated and brightly lit carriages bearing life-size statues depicting the passion and death of Christ. The town's principalia, or leading families own these centuries-old statues and carriages. Bantayanons participate in the Holy Week celebration with great fervor for to them, it is a custom of offering and devotion handed down from their forefathers. They also enjoy the rare Holy Week Privilege of the Catholic Church - exemption from fasting from a 200- year old Papal Bull edict. BASILICA DEL STO. NINO Magallanes St., Cebu City Built in 1565 by Miguel Lopez de Legaspi and Fr. Andres de Urdaneta, the Basilica houses the oldest and most precious Christian relic in the country - the image of Senor Sto. Nino de Cebu (Infant Jesus). The foot-high image, given by Ferdinand Magellan as a gift to Queen Juana during her baptism on April 21, 1521, is the central figure in the celebrated Sinulog Festival held every third week of January. COLON STREET Parian District, Cebu City Considered the oldest street in the Philippines, Colon Street was built by the Spaniards during the time of Miguel Lopez de Legaspi. An obelisk detailing its historical significance was constructed on its northern end along with the various markers placed in areas pinpointing sites of historical and cultural significance in Colon Street. It is the heart of downtown Cebu, throbbing with people from all walks of life. Remnants of its beauty from the olden times can still be seen despite its highly urbanized look as it is now lined with malls, restaurants and other business establishments. FORT SAN PEDRO Plaza Independencia, Port Area, Cebu City Fort San Pedro is the smallest and oldest triangular bastion, the first Spanish fort established in the country. It was built in 1565 primarily to protect the Spanish settlers from marauding pirates in the area. Completed in 1835, it has stood witness to the changes in the history of Cebu until much of it was destroyed during WW II when it served as a Japanese prison camp. JULIAN JUMALON BUTTERFLY SANCTUARY AND ART GALLERY 20.-D Macopa St., Basak Pardo, Cebu City This is the country's oldest butterfly collection and butterfly sanctuary with live immature and adult stages of local butterflies in their natural settings. It also houses the Lepido Mosaic Art Collection of Dr. Julian Jumalon who utilizes butterfly wings in making his beautiful and intricate artworks. KAWASAN FALLS Matutinao, Badian One can feel the coolness of the surrounding lush greenery of this panoramic waterfalls. Accommodation from cheap to moderate rates are available in the area. MAGELLAN'S CROSS Magallanes St, Cebu City The Magellan's Cross now seen at the kiosk is but a replica of the original wooden cross Ferdinand Magellan planted on April 14, 1521 in the spot where the first Christian Filipinos, Rajah Humabon, Queen Juana and their followers were baptized by Fr. Pedro Valderama. The octagonal kiosk was first built in 1835.

OLANGO WILDLIFE SANCTUARY located in the southernmost part of Olango Island Olango Island, east of Mactan, is where the largest concentration of migratory birds can be found in the country. The island actually forms part of the East Asian Migratory Flyway and is visited twice a year by 10,000 migratory water birds of 48 species out of the world's 77. Usually referred to as the Southward Migration, birds start migrating from their breeding places in Siberia, Northern China and Japan. Anticipating the scarcity of food and winter cold, they fly as far as Australia and New Zealand from late July until late November. By late February until May, they return to their breeding grounds in the reverse Northward Migration. TAOIST TEMPLE Beverly Hills, Cebu City Taoist Temple is a concrete reminder of the well-established Chinese Community in Cebu City, which has greatly contributed to the industrialization of Cebu. Built in 1964, the temple houses the teachings of Lao-Tse, the 600 B.C. Chinese Philosopher. People climb the temple's 99 steps to light joss sticks, meditate or have their fortunes told. Dining Facilities (DOT-accredited) Cosmopolitan Cebu is noted for its inexpensive cuisine. Island flavors are fairly simple with meat and seafood cooked in three ways – marinated in vinegar, charboiled or boiled – and then seasoned with condiments of your choice. Chinese and Spanish influence dominate the local cuisine. Chinese Cuisine GRAND MAJESTIC CONVENTION CITY, INC. Archbishop Reyes Ave., Cebu City Tel. Mactan Cebu International Airport, Lapu-lapu City Tel. No. (63-32) 340-2486 Special Interest CAVING Cebu has a lot of cave systems, many of which are unexplored. Old timers say that many of these caves were used to escape from foreign invaders during the war. So it is not far off to hear of tales about hidden treasures. Lantoy Caves Argao Lantoy Caves is one of the largest cave systems in Cebu Island. Surrounded by lush vegetation of the Argao Lantoy National Park, its giant vertical openings impress even experienced "savers". Sudlon This ancient cave is considered the largest in the area with a 50m wide entrance. It is located in a beautiful mountain environment where miocene limestone surrounds an intrusion of cretaceous andesite. The cave houses an enormous population of bats. DIVING Cebu is one of the major dive destinations in the Philippines. It has fine, sandy beaches, great coral gardens and colorful tropical fishes that offer divers an unforgettable underwater experience all year round. The weather allows diving anytime but ideal conditions are from December to June. Almost all the resorts have complete diving facilities and serve as jump-off points for Cebu's dive sites. One of two decompression-units available in the country is found in Cebu City.

Divers can choose from three different dive locations: Mactan Island, close to Cebu City; Moalboal in the southwestern part of the island; and, Sogod, in the northeast. Badian Island Badian, Cebu Located 97 kilometers southwest of Cebu City, Badian Island is famous for its beautiful coral reefs and white sandy beaches, making it an excellent diving spot. Accommodation is offered by the Badian Island Resort & Spa, an "AAA" class resort. Cabilao Island Cebu Strait Known for the hammerhead sharks which swim around the clear waters of the island. There are several coral dives off the coast which are very impressive. Large pelagics are very common in the island. Mactan Island Located a few kms southeast of the Cebu mainland Dubbed as the "Diving Mecca of the South", Mactan Island has more than a dozen beach resorts with complete diving facilities. The dive sites in the island are ideal for beginners and expert divers.

Hilutangan Island The Island has steeply sloping walls on both sides. Depending on the current, large pelagics often cruise by looking for their next meal. Kon Tiki The wall is encrusted with hard and soft corals with some impressive gorgonians between 10 — 20m. Marigondon Cave Cave entrance is around 42m, with a ceiling of 35m. At the end of the cave is a small crevice filled with hundreds of flashlight fish flickering in the dark. Olango Island Group A sandy bottom at 15m that slopes away to the deep water where several caves inhabited with large grouper and other reef fish, whitetip and other sharks and pelagics can be found.

Malapascua 8 kms northeast of Cebu Mainland

Malapascua Island Only 3 kms long and 1 km wide, with a population of about 3,000. The whole island can be toured in half a day. Its west coast is ideal for swimming and snorkeling but one should be careful because of unpredictable weather. A small Japanese landing craft can be seen in the northwest side of the island. The beautiful Mandarin (dragonets) fish lives in the small reef around it. Best time to dive is around 4:00 — 5:00 pm where these fish forage for food and are more easily seen.

Gato Island Lies northwest of Malapascua, 40 minutes by boat. It is a marine sanctuary with large boulders that lie around the island and whitetip reef sharks sleeping underneath. There are many bamboosharks under the smaller rocks. A large underwater tunnel crosses the island.

Moalboal Approximately 89.3 kms south of Cebu City More than the usual sun, sea and sand destination, Moalboal is a haven for diving and snorkeling enthusiasts. It is known as one of the most popular and prime diving spots in Asia in the early 80's. Especially notable as the best dive site in the area are the waters around Pescador Island. Its depth is home to a diversity of marine life — coral, anemones, sponges and a school of brightly colored reef fish. Accommodations of cheap to moderate room rates and diving facilities are available in areas within Panagsama beach, Basdiot and Saavedra.

The Alegria Marine Park is known for dolphin and whale-watching and the wreck of a small fishing boat lying on the sand at 23 – 30m. It is also popular for underwater marriages/ reaffirmation of vows solemnized by a diving priest. Pescador Island The island has a swallow (3 –10m) fringing reef leading to a spectacular drop off. It has a steep wall with a stunning cave (Cathedral) where giant gorgonians, fan corals, buttresse and overhangs that liberally adorn the fantastic wall can be found. Sharks, including hammerheads and whitetip sharks as well as other pelagics, are commonly seen. Sunken Island A submerged mountain, the top of which is 25m deep in open ocean. Prone to strong currents, the pelagic life is outstanding with abundant parrotfish and grouper all over the reef.

Santander Located in the southernmost tip of Cebu and approximately 134.3 kms. from Cebu City

Liloan and Looc Slopes down to 25m with sand bottom with large coralheads, soft corals, rays, sandeels. Wall of Death Because of the current, said dive is for experienced divers only. Hard and soft corals, sponges and nudibranchs can be spotted. With luck you can find frogfish, ribbon eels, scorpion fish, lion fish and cuttlefish. Mantas and whalesharks can be seen during the months of March to June.

Ship Wrecks Cebu has its share of interesting ship wrecks to conquer. There are several wonderful wreck sites to choose from and all offer a unique glimpse into the underwater world.

Dona Marilyn Wreck The ferry, measuring 90 meters, was sunk in a typhoon and lies between 18m and 30m of water. This artificial reef has been in place for over 20 years and has become a sanctuary for various species of fish. Although sharks are not as common in the Philippines as in other countries around Southeast Asia, this site is an exception. Large pelagics roam the area and the best time to see them are early morning or at dusk. Pioneer Japanese Wreck A Japanese warship that sunk in 1944 and lies close to Malapascua in 42m to 51m depth. It is covered with black coral bushes. Schools of glassfish swim through the wreck and huge scorpion fishes are everywhere. Divers are able to see the propeller and large machine guns of this warship.

Tapilon Japanese Wreck A Japanese cargo ship that was sunk during WWII and lies from 18m to 27m deep. It is home to a vast range of tropical fish and is covered with corals and bushes of black corals. Some parts look like the ruins of a temple with pillars, all covered with corals. Tapilon is an ideal site for novices to learn diving.

MOUNTAIN BIKING Cebu has an active mountain biking scene, and many local riders regularly explore the island's rugged hills which are crisscrossed by a network of dusty trails. Cebu To Balamban The ride takes the biker straight across the island of Cebu, following a little-traversed route through the mountainous interior. The roads are extremely rugged, with steep climbs and should be regarded as a ride for fit and experienced bikers. Sudlon To Manipis Manipis Road was once the only link between Cebu's east and west coasts. The ride makes one experience the rugged interior of the island. Talamban Route A shorter route which has plenty of rugged riding and ups and downs suitable for less experienced riders or those who do not wish to spend a full day on the road. ROCK CLIMBING Cebu is rapidly becoming a bona fide rock-climbing destination because of its hilly terrain. Cebu's rock climbers have quietly developed some of the country's finest climbing sites. A backbone of limestone karst runs north to south down the center of Cebu island, forming wide, smooth walls. Cantabaco Toledo City Cantabaco was recently declared the best climb in the country, in terms of quality climbs, rock quality and grade variation, by the Sports Climbing Association of the Philippines. Malubog It is a clean, stable, moderately exposed climb with a combination of face and corner work. Graded at 5.7 to S.8 which is quite difficult to find. Trekking Experience nature and breathtaking views from high altitudes, first hand --- in Cebu. Trek through valleys, jungles and waterfalls. Wade against currents in the clear cool waters of a tropical river high up in the mountains. Meet friendly locals and experience a mountain market place where local produce is sold. Kawasan Falls Barangay Matutinao, Badian Town, Cebu Jump-off point: Barangay Mantalungon The route crosses the island's center, passing through one of Cebu's last wooded areas. The waterfalls is a pleasant place for a swim and climbers can scramble up to the highest of the three falls. Mt. Manunggal Jump-off point: Barangay Tagbao One of the highest points in Cebu at 908 meters. The hike to the top is an arduous five-hour ascent. The grades are steady rather than severe. Best to climb between December and February when temperatures are moderate since the mountain is devoid of forest. Osmena Peak Mantalongon, Cebu
