Christmas

There were many different reactions to the message of the first Christmas. indeed, the news of Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem evoked a mixed response. of course some were elated. The shepherds rejoiced and went to

worship the child. The Wise Men later bought gifts of great value and bowed in adoration.

But not all reacted so enthusiastically to the news! King Herod was so disturbed when he heard about it that he plotted to destroy the baby Jesus. And the religious leaders weren’t worshipping at the manger. They were not interested at all and entirely missed the point.

Amidst the glitter of bright decorations and joyous carols it seems that everyone today is overjoyed at the message of Christmas. But of course this isn’t true. Whilst there are many who do honour and worship the one who brought us life, there are thousands who don’t. There are those who doubt, or mock, or deny the message of Christmas. There are those who like King Herod seek to destroy the true meaning of Christmas. And there are those who are simply not interested.

every Christmas we have a choice. The news of the birth of Jesus - the son of God - demands a response. Will we be so busy with parties, gifts and holidays that we forget the significance of the son of God? Will we scoff or sneer at the Christmas story? or might we at least be like those wise men that came seeking the saviour? Will we give Him the praise that He is due?

Finally, on behalf of everyone at HumeRidge Church of Christ, i wish you a very happy Christmas. We invite you to our special Christmas services at 6.30pm on Christmas eve and 9.00am on Christmas Day. These are joyful, creative and meaningful celebrations for people of all ages! O come let us adore Him, Christ the Lord!

A magazine cartoon recently caught my eye. it showed King Herod sitting on his throne looking rather worried about the birth of Jesus. As two of his loyal advisors walk past, one of them says to the other, “Why is King Herod so upset? What difference can one little baby make?”

2 I

Unfortunately many Australians passively ask the same question. The only image of Jesus in their mind is that of a cute and helpless little baby wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger. it is easy then to leave Christ in the cradle and ask, “What difference can one little baby make?”

The answer to this question can only be found when we remember who this little child really is, and what he accomplished when he grew up. When we understand these things we gain a more balanced perception of his personality and purpose. At Christmas time, therefore, we not only worship the beautiful baby of Bethlehem; but we worship and honour the crucified Christ of Calvary.

indeed this little baby, born in the backblocks of Bethlehem some 2000 years ago, has made a huge difference:

HE HAS CHANGED THE COURSE OF HISTORY

Christianity spread rapidly throughout the Roman empire and eventually the world. even today the good news of Jesus is spreading dynamically in China, Africa and south America. our Calendar even revolves around the date of Jesus’ birth (B.C. and A.D.).

HE HAS IMPROVED SOCIAL STANDARDS

Jesus treated all kinds of people with genuine love and care. He had an amazing respect for human life and dignity. some years ago, the late Dr James Kennedy of Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church wrote a book called, What if Jesus Had never Been Born? Chapter by chapter, it revealed through careful and insightful research how Jesus Christ has positively influenced just about everything

we value in the modern civilization – charity, education, government, civil liberties, science, economics, morality, medicine and more. John ortberg’s recent book, Who is this Man? told a similar story. Wherever the Christian message has been proclaimed faithfully it has positively influenced society!

HE HAS TRANSFORMED MILLIONS OF LIVES

This little child came into the world to “save his people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21). He has freed people from the pain of addiction. He has forgiven and freed people from a messed up past. He has given hope to those who once despaired of life. And he has transformed the lives of all who have trusted in Him; giving a fulfilling and eternal life.

AND HE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR YOU!

This same little child who changed the course of history, improved social standards, and transformed millions of lives, can make a difference in our lives too - if we are willing to ask him and follow him. The angel said to Joseph, “They will call him emmanuel which means God is with us” (Matthew 1:23). This means that Jesus is here; right where we are; with us now; and able to help us in any of life’s difficulties or hassles.

What difference can one little baby make? Lots! it’s true! This one little baby can make a difference in our life, in our family, and in our relationships with others. He can make a difference to our values and priorities. And he can then motivate us to also make a difference in a needy world. it’s no wonder the angels sang so joyously at the birth of Jesus Christ, son of God and saviour!

The clear theme of these and many other verses in scripture is the need and vulnerability of strangers in a new land. “When Jesus speaks about strangers, He is not talking about middle-class, majority-culture people who speak the same language as we do but happen to be new to the area. He is talking about those without family, without resources, without a familiar culture or community to sustain them.”

A very real part of our church mission is to reach out with God’s transforming hope to immigrants/refugees in our community.

Neale Proellocks

“The Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God... 18 He executes justice...and loves the sojourner (refugee), giving him food and clothing. 19 Love the sojourner, therefore, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt.” DEUTERONOMY 10:17-19

“...Extend hospitality to strangers...” ROMANS 12:13

Jesus and parents flee Herod’s search for the child. “Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt,” MATTHEW 2:13-15

if we don’t, we will not be able to say that we truly know Christ. Matthew 25:3 “i was a stranger and you did not welcome me...”

in 2013, our HumeRidge international outreach has grown as we share God’s love and compassion to migrants, refugees, and overseas students. one of the debilitating side effects of being a refugee in Australia is their inability to speak english at a level of effective communication in a broad range of situations. This disaffects them for work prospects, in the acquisition of housing, their compliance with Australian law, in domestic and community relationships and generally fitting in and assimilating into the local community.

english as a second Language equips the stranger to become a good citizen and good neighbour. What started with a handful of people has grown into a team of esL teachers, helpers and supporters assisting children and teenagers on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons with their home work, teaching english to adults on Wednesday nights, Thursday and saturday mornings, going into migrant/refugee homes providing practical help and having them in our homes to show the love of Jesus through hospitality and friendship.

in all of this our heart is to point people from the temporary hopes of this world to the real and only hope found in Jesus Christ.

On November 2nd, our year 10-12 students & their leaders joined together

to celebrate the contribution 54 Year 12 Graduates have made to HumeRidge

Youth throughout their time here. A wonderful time was had by all.

8 I

Generation Why? is a new concept developed under the guidance of our young Adults Pastor Chris england. in a safe and encouraging environment young adults of HumeRidge, and their friends, and invited to develop their understanding of the Christian faith and ask the tough questions about life and God.

Recently our first two week series, run on a Tuesday night, was focused on the topic of ‘spiritual Gifts’. Pastor neale Proellocks, alongside HumeRidge elders Ray stoddart, Mike Gaschk and Jason Higlett, took this opportunity to sow into the lives of the next generation and begin to discuss what we at HumeRidge believe about spiritual gifts and how they are, and can be used to build up the body of Christ. There was a great response to the night with over 60 young adults eagerly participating and asking questions each week. Joining with us was a contingent of older people who shared their life experiences and wisdom developed over their years of living the Christian life.

We are blessed at HumeRidge to be part of a multigenerational community that desires to see each person, individually and corporately, be transformed to be more like Jesus even when it means providing space to ask the tough questions.

As the ministry to young Adults begins to grow we invite you to join in Generation Why? events so together we can explore more about the Christian faith and live lives that make a difference in our community and beyond.

What an amazing year it has been! A year of celebrations and challenges in which God has truly been glorified as His church at HumeRidge has come together to care for one another and our community, and see lives Transforming to Christ.

From the support given to Missions we’ve seen Jack & Anne Kamst head to Christmas island to care for Refugees & Asylum seekers and the local church. Missions and building works continue in the Philippines, Cambodia, Gambia and Papua new Guinea. Couples and young people have also travelled on mission throughout Africa and Asia. And in 2014 we start the year with the Hagar Mission Trip. We celebrate HumeRidge’s commitment to

overseas mission.

At home, our local sU Chappies and student Life University teams support our schools and universities through the region (& beyond) to help others experience the love of God. our school yard Blitz team help create a better environment for students to learn and grow.

The HumeRidge english Centre provides homework help and english classes for many so they can grow in the knowledge of our language and better assimilate into our wonderful community. our Kids, youth & young Adults ministries are thriving and many individuals lend a hand throughout our city to make a difference in other’s lives. We celebrate all who are the hands and feet of God at home.

12 I

13 I

As a Church we have been blessed to welcome many new members and see more people grow in their commitment to Christ. For example, more people have expressed a commitment to Christ through baptism this year than in any of the previous 20 years. And, this Commitment Day we’ve had over $160,000 pledged to projects which will enable us to build on ministries which care for the needs of our community. We celebrate being part of a church community that seeks to see lives Transformed to Christ.

We celebrate 2013 and thank you for the contribution you have made. We are the body of Christ and together we are making a difference.

The flaking white paint on that overgrown picket fence was perhaps an indication that everything enclosed within was not quite right. in the backyard, the little girl in the checked dress played with her favourite wooden peg doll. Let me introduce you to me, Carmella Margaret Fenech. First daughter to a Maltese father and Australian mother. My father was only around for my

conception and that of my five siblings. My mother was cold and totally void of any emotion or connection to me. For the first 7 years of my life i was targeted with extreme torture of every kind - from being trafficked to the men in the coal mine next to our house, to being tied to the clothesline during electrical storms. i was constantly taken to the brink of death and back but for the grace of God.

TESTimoNy byCarmen Walmsley

15 I

i learnt very early on in my life how not to trust people. i remember being so desperate for help one day that i ran to the church not far from where we lived and told the priest about what i was going through at the hands of my mother. He scolded me for making up stories and sent me back home.

in the midst of this mayhem i experienced the very real presence of an angel, Gabriel, from whom i sought peace and protection. i recall asking him to let me stay with God during those traumatic ordeals. i was never scared or fearful for my life whenever he was with me. There was also an old lady next door who would sit by her bedroom window and read to me from a little red book. i’m not sure if she knew what was going on in our house, but the words she read were full of love and hope. Turns out the little red book was a Bible.

one day my mother took my siblings and i to our neighbour’s house and left to go shopping - she never came back. We all ended up in orphanages until we were fostered out, separately. i had been fiercely protective of my brothers and sisters and this forced separation was extremely difficult to accept.

My experience of life in those first few years fast-tracked my skills of building walls, barricades, land mines, barbed wire, and anything else i could think of to keep people out. My fight for everyday survival forced me into a mindset of needing to control everything and everyone around me, an outlook that affected many relationships along my journey.

only recently have i come to learn (often the hard way) that i don’t control the world around me and that God desires that “child-like” faith to trust him in all circumstances.

i still have a way to go, but God’s amazing grace which has brought me safe thus far, will continue to shape me to be the woman - the mum, the wife, the sister and friend He wanted that little girl to grow up to be.

My experiences have now enabled me as a school chaplain to connect with children, many of whom have, and are, going through experiences similar to mine. God has big plans for each little life, just as He does for yours and mine.

Thank you! - Recently, around $2000 was raised through KYB and Girls Night Out to assist in purchasing resources to facilitate the implementation of the Friends For Life and Fun Friends programs across Gabbinbar State School.

These programs, supported by the SU Chaplaincy service, will help students, families and the school community develop resilience skills and positive life-coping skills so that they can better deal with whatever life throws their way.

What is your connection with HumeRidge Church? our big connection with HumeRidge is each other – this is where we met! My family (shannon) has attended the church since 1994 and my sister and i were part of HumeRidge youth during its Triple M days. Dan started to attend HumeRidge night services when he came to UsQ. Dan and i were youth group leaders until we moved in 2000.

When did you first feel God’s call to the mission field? Dan and i were both raised in the church and God planted a seed in our hearts before we were teenagers. each mission convention we went to and each missionary we met - watered and grew this seed. By the time we were engaged we both knew that God was calling us to the mission field.

How did you come to serve with CRMF in PNG? While Dan was at Uni he worked as housemaster at Concordia and got to know quite a few PnG students. it was at this time that God gave him a passion for PnG and its people.

Dan and i both knew that we weren’t pastors or preachers, although we both completed a Certificate iV in Christian Ministries through ACoM. We really felt that God would use the skills and qualifications that we had in

engineering (Dan) and Business (shannon). A good friend told us about Christian Radio Mission Fellowship (CRMF) and their work and suggested it would be a great fit. Dan took a 3 week trip to check it out in 2005. Although the name refers only to Radios (HF and VHF) Dan soon realised that his skills and passion in training and solar would also be useful. After working through the application process, orientation and 18 months of deputation, we joined CRMF in Goroka PnG in April 2008.

What was the hardest thing for you to adapt when first moving to PNG? We of course struggled with being so far away from family and friends. We quickly learnt the importance of skype and facebook. But one of the other major struggles we faced, was the issues involved in living in a third world country. infrastructure is something that we really take for granted in Australia. We had never had to deal with being without power for days on end or not being able to get fuel because a landslide blocked the highway. Heightened security was another issue. Having to be aware of what is going on around you as soon as you walk out the gate, never leaving anything in the car and having to respond to middle of the night alarms, all take a bit of getting used to.

a passion for pnG

transforming

16 I

www.humeridgechurch.org I 17

Do you still have the same struggles or are there new issues facing you today? Lack of infrastructure and security are still issues that we face everyday. you get more used to it and more apt at dealing with situations, but it doesn’t get easier.

something that we have struggled with in the last 2 years is establishing a healthy work life balance. i (shannon) have taken on the role of Administrator (part-time) and Dan wears a number of hats (Training Co-ordinator, Workshop Manager, Health and safety officer). There are real needs all around us in our work, serving the churches and remote communities of PnG, however it is not a job that finishes at 5pm. We have to constantly work at helping those we came to serve, without letting it have a negative impact on our family and home life.

What has been the greatest surprise to you about life in PNG? it really shouldn’t surprise us at all, but we have been truly blown away with God’s provision for us. When have learnt firsthand what it means to have God provide for all of our needs. We see it every month as our financial support comes in from donors in Australia. We have seen it as He has provided friends and ‘family’ here in Goroka, when God has given long term solutions to health issues and through His protection during an armed hold up earlier this year.

After living in PNG, do you have any reflections of life in Australia? i know that it is cliché to call Australia the ‘lucky country’ and that there are of things that could be improved. However i do think that Australia is blessed in many ways and we aren’t so inclined to take that for granted now.

For the better part of 10 years i have been passionately involved in supporting Hagar in their Mission of freeing people from Abuse. From a few small youth Group fundraisers making at most $500 a year the HumeRidge partnership with Hagar has grown into a strong God honouring relationship which last year saw approximately $50,000 raised for this vital ministry.

over the past 3 years HumeRidge Church has sent a number of Missions Teams to Cambodia to gather information and resources to better strengthen our relationship. There have been many highs and lows that i have personally experienced over the years that have impacted me deeply. none more so than the story of srey na.

TRANSFORMED deCeMbeR 2013 januaRy 2014 I 19

This small girl was an innocent victim of a very severe case of Domestic slavery. in 2008 at the age of 9 she was sold by her mother to a wealthy Cambodian couple for $150. she was quickly put to work as their house maid working 7 days a week at all hours of the day and night. Her bed was a small dog basket in the basement, she was beaten and tortured as a result of being unable to fulfill duties that even an adult woman would often struggle with. in 2010 when Hagar caught wind of this they found little srey na at the age of 11 extremely malnourished and diseased. she had 4 broken bones including both wrists and had approximately 150 white scars all over her body. These white scars were caused by the tearing off of skin using a set of rusty old pliers.

i met srey na on a Mission Trip in 2011, she had just recently come into Hagar’s Care. she was severely traumatised to the point that she wet herself at the very sight of us being there. she was 11 years of age but looked 7 years old due to malnourishment. … skip forward 2 years to our mission trip in January 2013. now 3 years on, from when srey na first came into Hagar’s care i had the privilege of standing face to face with this precious little child of God playing an exciting game of clap. she was a totally different person. Her face lit up when she saw us, her smile stretched from ear to ear and she latched onto one of the females in our group like they were sisters. There was no sign of trauma and no sign of hatred. she looked me straight in the eyes and thanked God for my support and asked me to continue to pray for the children of Cambodia who don’t have families or homes like Hagar. i am quite a tough sort of character and what i often would just look past and brush over hit me fair in the face and i thought to myself, behind a few small tears running down my cheeks, “this little girl standing in front of me is all the reason i need to continue to support Hagar”.

Mother Theresa is quoted as saying “if i focus on the masses, i will rarely ever act. if i focus on the ones i will always lovingly act”.

Jesus’ ministry while he walked this earth whole heartedly focused on the ones. This is true of a little tax collector named Zaccheus. We also see it through Jesus’ Parable teachings in Luke 15, all have different stories but one common thread; the focus is on the “one”. Jesus teaches us to minister to the ones and most of all do it with love.

HumeRidge is sending another team to Cambodia in January 2014 with the aim to build into the lives of people and strengthen our relationship. i will be co-leading this trip along side Lauren england on her 3rd trip to Hagar Cambodia. We will be accompanied by a young team made up of past, present and future youth & Kids Leaders including Kasey Roser, Zara england, Carlie Williams, Holly nicolson, emma Terry, Keith Hacquoil, Dane Harris, nat McGovern and Lachlan savill.

We are all extremely pleased to be chosen to representative HumeRidge. We invite you to support the 2014 Hagar trip through supporting fundraising activities and praying for our team and the work they will be undertaking.

1) Pray for guidance and wisdom as Jamie and Lauren lead this group.

2) Pray for travel safety and good health.

3) Pray that God opens each of our hearts to see what He sees and hear what He hears.

4) Pray for unity within the team as they continue to build stronger God honouring friendships.

5) Pray for the people of Hagar who we have opportunity to work with.

Celebrating Healing

Mosaic Ministries exists to see broken people loved and healed in Jesus. By ‘broken people’ we mean men, women and children who are suffering from spiritual, emotional, physical or relational pain and distress. Whatever the cause of their suffering is, we humbly seek to pastorally care for, counsel, and support them. Pastoral care includes Biblical counselling for anyone including couples and families, and many other support services such as

providing respite recovery accommodation for those in severe distress, advocating on behalf of distressed people, and by professionals attending various appointments with clients as requested (e.g., medical appointments accompanied by our volunteer medical scientist). other professional services include one-to-one counselling, couple and family counselling, group therapy, support for pastors, leaders and their families. Christian leaders and financially distressed people are provided with the support they desperately need. This includes professional supervision for Chaplains who are at the coal face in schools.

Regardless of background or religion, we seek to share Jesus and His amazing gospel with everyone. This past year we have grown

from seeing 113 clients in January to 238 in August. We have cared for Church pastors & their families, scripture Union chaplains, children, people with mental illness and their families, cancer sufferers, people with chronic disease & their families, single mums, victims of domestic violence, indigenous youth, foster carers and the elderly to name but a but a few.

Our team consists of Dr Sandra Baker, Rev Will Henderson, Pastors Bruce Armstrong, Brad Morris, Alan Beardall and Lezette DeBrassic. Pastoral Care staff Tanya Machin, Wendy Merrin and Carolyn Cole.

Also a mental health nurse Sheree Campbell and administration staff Beck Cameron, Lyndell Hobbins, & Janet Kleidon.
