the year of yes:

seeding a new beginning

2012.

For hundreds of years, eschatologists havesought after some signal of the beginning ofthe end. The Mayan calendar's indication of5,125 year cycle of the fourth world--theone we are currently--coming to an end onDecember 21, 2012, has generatedspeculation and New Age hype for as long aswe can remember.

Sumerians, Babylonians, the Book of Mormons, Nostradamus andmany ancient mythologies have all been interpreted to forecastevents of destruction for this year. Add to that a blockbusterHollywood movie complete with a fictional institute warning peopleto "prepare for the end of the world," and there you have it: Theend is near.

Apocalyptic.Cataclysmic.Disaster.

The idea of impending Doomsday has been foisted upon this yearfrom so many directions, it's just enough to give even the most

suspect of us just a bit of pause.

What has also been forecast is the beginning of an age oftransformation. This Age of Aquarius beckons higher awareness andshifts in consciousness that signal an evolutionary leap forward.

2012 presents an opportunity that we, as a collective, areprivileged to see arising. Owing to the glaring institutionalbreakdowns, governmental failures and corporate crises of the last

breakdowns, governmental failures and corporate crises of the lastfew years, a new view is possible.

Far from being a year of ends, 2012 can be a new beginning.

This is the Year of Yes.

A time in which justice-seeking movements are not only positionedto make significant advances, but are also viewed more favorablyby more people than anytime since the Civil Rights Era. With theman behind the curtain so clearly revealed, the masses are onceagain increasingly wakeful allies rather than sleep-walkingadversaries.

The Occupy Movement has revealed the sustained energy andpassion--even if misdirected at times--that we have longed tobelieve exists amongst the People. We can use this vast well ofpotential to lead our movements into a state of joyful attention toeach new challenge we face with a feeling of support at our backs.

We can say yes.

The 99% doesn't have to be against the 1%, we can say yes to avision that is more viable and more compelling for the 100.

Divesting our dollars from Big Banks, we can say yes to local banksand credit unions that have said yes to us.

Withdrawing our attention from negative campaigns and blame, wecan direct our energies--and our presidential votes--towardforgiving mistakes made.

Yes, we can. Say yes. (Again.)

We can also say yes to the legions of social changes agents andarchitects that have been steadily building bridges to a future yetunknown.

We can say yes to organizations like Domestic Workers United thatimproves people's lives in tangible ways and gives Love credit as anorganizing tool.

We lift up initiatives that say yes to Strong Families in which everymember has the opportunity to thrive.

Not only can we recall legislators that overstep boundaries aboutfalse borders, we can then call forth a Dream Act and say yes todignity no matter where you were born.

We can even Rebuild the Dream into an America that we can sayyes to because it houses, feeds, and supports the wholeness andwell-being of us all.

There is good work that will transform society as we know it,happening in every city, rural and urban, large and small.

Imagination, innovation and inspiration are everywhere. Let usresolve to see it flourish, amplified and brought to meaningfulscale. We can put the YES back in We Can, because we must and wewill.

newDharma TalkHow to Practice | Getting Out of the Way ofChangeWe all want to change in some way, whether thatmeans stopping a bad habit or changing afundamental behavior. And we come up with aslew of excuses to explain why we haven't

changed: The conditions are all wrong. We haven't got the money, the time, the support. It's easier to do that than to come to gripswith how we show up (or don’t show up) for ourselves. Learninghow to practice and face the things we run from is what createschange in our lives.

"When you ask somebody to tell you about somebody else, theydon’t tell you what they've done, they tell you how they be: They'relike this. They're very kind. They've very scratchy. She's fairlydifficult...Rather detailed...Very exuberant. Actually, kind of dull, alittle bit listless...no one gives you the list of "they meant to do this;they intended to make this kind of change." What they tell you is notwhat they did but the pattern that shows up in terms of who theyare. The pattern because the content disappears, because it's thepattern of our behavior that leaves an imprint upon people as towho we are..."

Oftentimes we have to shiftour perspective ever so slightly to see what is availableto us. Questions of whether we are honoring history orstuck in the past, stuck inside or finding our way out, seeing the sun rise or set, all depend on our view.Where do we stand?
