Stewardship Focus
Family Promise
Today, we welcome Karen Newsome, the executive director of Family
Promise of the Midlands and an ordained Presbyterian minister. Prior
to serving as executive director, Karen served as pastor of Sion
Presbyterian Church in Winnsboro from 2009 until 2014. Previously
she was interim senior pastor of Spring Valley Presbyterian Church.
Family Promise recognizes that family homelessness and poverty are
complex issues that require comprehensive, innovative solutions.
Solving homelessness is not just about housing. Family Promise’s
holistic approach to the crisis of family homelessness includes three
key areas of focus: prevention, shelter and stabilization.
Family Promise of the Midlands (FPM) partners with congregations
like Ashland UMC in Columbia, individuals, families, other social service
agencies, foundations, and businesses to provide shelter and solutions
for families who have children and are facing a housing crisis. Families
sleep in these congregation classrooms and other spaces that often
go unused during the week, and congregation members provide
meals, essential needs and companionship. The FPM staff provides
professional comprehensive case management and assistance in
securing employment, medical care, childcare, school placement and
ultimately, affordable housing.
FPM provides a rent-free, safe, and loving "home" while equipping
families with the knowledge and resources they need to sustain their
independence in a home of their own.
If you aren't receiving Family Promise of the Midlands emails, please
subscribe to stay up-to-date with important FPM events by going to
