Triumph StudentHeads to SkillsUSA Nationals

By Kelly ColeChris Evans, a Triumph high school senior, is

quite the savvy businessman. His main focus is on customer service he feels in any business inter-action, customer service is key. For the past three years Chris has been competing in Customer Ser-vice in SkillsUSA. The competition gives SkillsU-SA members various business related scenarios and they work on learning how to provide impeccable customer service while still running the business. Chris has competed at the state level in SkillsUSA Customer Service for the past three years. During competition, the student is thrown into a customer service focused role-playing scenario. The student must balance business tasks while delivering supe-rior service to the customers. The scenario is judged on elements like answering the phone within three rings, dressing professionally, being clear and con-cise with communication, being polite, and remain-ing calm. The judges interact in the scenario and are usually playing needy or angry customers. Chris said that previous scenarios he has had at the state level include acting as a computer tech service repre-sentative and a tire salesman. His customer service skills while playing the tire salesman earned him a third place at the state competition last year.

Chris spent this school year honing his skills and headed back to SkillsUSA state again this past April. This year Chris had to enact a scene where he was in

charge of a landscaping b u s i n e s s . The sce-nario forced Chris to deal with many different in-t e r a c t i o n s at the same

time. The rst issue was that there was a cus-tomer in a rush and he needed some tiles xed right away. While I was handling that, I received a phone call from a cus-tomer needing services. At the same time both those things were hap-pening, I had an angry customer come in the door that I had to deal with. It was a lot all at one time and you have to make sure you are keeping on top of your customer service by answering the phone within three rings and dealing with all the customers in a calm man-ner, he said. Chris handled his customers so well he took rst at state and will now be competing at Skills-USA Nationals in Louisville, KY at the end of June. The competition usually has around 6,000 students competing from all over the United States in variousbusiness themed competitions.

Between now and then Chris is getting in some practice by running through different scenarios with his sister Autumn, who is also in SkillsUSA. Theclub has had made a lasting impact on Chris during his time at Triumph. I love it. This is my last year and Skills is my favorite club to be in. It has de -nitely prepared me for working, but has also given me skills I can use in general, like at family events or other gatherings. Skills really got me involved infundraising and community service which has been great too. It took me a long time to get where I am, but practice makes perfect. Triumph staff and stu-dents are very proud and excited to have Chris rep-resent the school at a national level and wish him thevery best of luck at SkillsUSA Nationals.
