SOCIETY NOTICE BOARD

Editor’s Comments: What a struggle, though nothing compared to the efforts of the Paralympians...inspiring. Another apology is due for the even longer delay to this issue, but as you will see there are reasons a plenty!! After entertaining one brother before heading south, we then had my youngest brother and his son who came up from Sussex for the week. Typical, everyone now wants to suddenly come up to check out my parents new pad. Worn out doing the grand tour of mountains, distilleries, harbours and seals...twice. First time any of my 3 brothers have bothered to visit in 13 years in Scotland, having seen them dozens of times down south...talk about timing !! In between we went south to sort out Chris’s house, still had no luck getting our rent off our ex-tenants it looks like we are going through the courts. At least we made a start on cleaning Chris’s house, though following fixing a broken automatic garage door stuck shut, the cooker, washing machine and dishwasher all went kaput, the washing machine in a puff of smoke. Death certificates were all the call out engineers recommended. So on top of buying a new Freesat box plus a new TV licence, so we could watch TV (no aerial), the trip cost about a £1000 in repairs and new appliances. I did however manage in between the dramas to crack on with the October issue of TRACKS only to find when I got home it wouldn’t open up, having somehow got corrupted. Umpteen attempts and the purchase of so called repair software didn’t resurrect it. The software only managed the first couple of pages in basic format. So not having any time to start with that didn’t help my mood and it was desperate times with the thought of virtually re-doing it again especially as all the time consuming gathering of up to date info had been lost. It was now the 29th but following a deep breath and using an early draft this issue has risen phoenix like, albeit with different articles, but as you can see, late. Frustratingly I had written a 10 page piece on my trip to the ELR straight off the top of my head into TRACKS, so that was too much to redo quickly. Note to self, next time write the article separately to drop in.

Ironic that a month ago it looked like I wouldn't be doing any more issues at all....and the computing gods tried to make that happen. However as you will read a lot has happened fairly quickly, which has firstly made this issue important and secondly made me reassess my roles.

Before you sink your head in your hands whilst reading the following, this is an exciting time in the evolvement of the society, and we can look forward to a new, refreshed, better society for all.

IMPORTANT PLEASE READ

Chairman’s Address: As we near the end of another busy year and most but the real hardy souls amongst us hang up their coats and pack away their books until the better weather and longer days return, we have time to reflect on a busy and successful 2016 and also think about the coming year.

Each of the last two years it has been more difficult for me finding time in the first 3-4 months of the year with much activity on new Publications etc. due to my job but I’ve got through it in the most part without (hopefully) affecting Members/customers who buy our books. However, earlier this year the pressure on my time and having to take back compiling the Combine put a huge strain on things.

I therefore, have given notice of my intention to resign all of my roles within ICRS at the end of 2016. It’s time for someone with more time to take on the important roles that I have held for several years. With it being the quiet part of the year for the next 3-4 months, there should be plenty of time to fill each of the roles in time for 2017. The Committee have accepted my resignation and are busy planning, so expect to see some very positive changes coming along in the near future.

I intend to remain an ICRS Member and have been granted Lifetime Membership by the Committee, for which I am very grateful. I also intend to continue to support ICRS in any way that I can so don’t expect to never hear from me again! For example, each year I look forward to organising the annual ICRS Event at Eastleigh Works and, subject to the continued agreement of the Arlington Directors, I expect to continue to do this. I also enjoy submitting photos for TRACKS to support the EASTLEIGH

WORKS REPORT which has been ably written for some months now by Norman Smith and this will continue.

The UK Pocket Book 2017 and first UK Combine 2017 will be my last for ICRS as I will keep the database up to date until 31st December 2016 so that it is ready for the compiling of both these key books for 2017.

As I wind down my ICRS activities towards the end of 2016 I will look back with great pride on how far ICRS has come since I became Chairman. Credit, of course, is not down to just one person but to the whole team and I am proud to have led that team through the massive improvements such as TRACKS and the increased Membership from just over 600 to over 1000 today as well as many, many others. ICRS still has a strong team and I’m confident that it will continue to thrive long after I have gone.

With me departing, Louise has also decided to step down as Events Co-ordinator and, again, because it’s the quiet time of year, there will be plenty of time for a replacement to pick up the reins ready for a good program of events in 2017. I’d like to thank Louise for all the hard work over the last few years which all started with her signing up the largest number of new Members in one event at the DRS Open Day at Carlisle.

I’d also like to thank all the Members whose comments and suggestions over the years have made it worth all the hard work. If anyone reading this has any inclination to step forward and assist the committee then please do so now as you will be warmly welcomed.

Last, but by no means least, I am in no doubt that ICRS has a very bright future with a dedicated Committee and thriving Membership and will emerge stronger and better from the changes that will occur in the coming months.

All the best, Carl Changes to TRACKS: As with Carl, clearly my escalating troubles fitting in deadlines have been brewing for a while and have come to a head. If you followed what I have been saying over recent months you will probably have gathered I am struggling to produce TRACKS in its current format with 12 monthly deadlines. Time in one sense is not the issue as I also still do the Website and have been heavily involved in the books with Carl and both these will continue.

Just to explain my position a little bit more, on a personal level I ‘retired’ in April 2006, after having separated in March 2005 and I was able to dedicate ‘unlimited’ time to the Society for the first 3 relatively trouble free years after I took on the Editorship in Nov 2006. Those 6 months of total freedom seem a long time ago now !! Then in late 2009 we had our battles with HB Publications, and started to re-invent the Society which resulted in increasing the size of TRACKS and the membership. As Carl has said this has been successful but a double edged sword in that the professionalism to which the Society is run is all on a voluntary basis. I have certainly made a rod for my own back pushing to improve TRACKS. Notwithstanding all the above I just about still enjoy writing articles for TRACKS and I know many of you look forward to what is produced for you each month. The style of TRACKS is of my making and I am sure most would wish it to continue in that way. Clearly if I were to fall under the proverbial train then another would step in and make it their own as I did 10 years ago. However it is a mammoth project now so highly unlikely anyone is mad enough to take it on and it would probably shrink back, as certainly my contributions would end. Certainly trying to explain how TRACKS is edited is impossible as it is organic and varies every month depending on contributors and the topical news. Being honest about workload, I believe no one in normal employment will have time. I spend the best part of 3 weeks spread over the month compiling, answering / sending 100s of emails and final editing which is a solid week of work. It is virtually continuous and would qualify as a substantial part time job.

Therefore having carefully assessed that trying to compile TRACKS with more than one Editor is unworkable we have decided, along with other financial reasons (see below) that the number of issues as a trial will be reduced to 10 issues per annum. We will maintain the current 64 pages, which is optimum and maximum for printing and postage, but change the content to suit (see below). It all ties in as well with a refresh that I had been thinking about for a while having now had 2 years of relative

4

Page 5: TRACKS - Inter City Railway Society homeintercityrailwaysociety.org/TRACKSissues/TRACKS1610.pdfstarted to re-invent the Society which resulted in increasing the size of TRACKS and

stability at 64 pages. There will be 8 ‘normal’ issues containing all the usual up to date info produced to the same monthly deadlines, at the start of Feb, Mar, May, Jun, Aug, Sep, Nov & Dec. This will initially give me four months break in Jan, Apr, Jul & Oct from the punishing deadlines. In particular the Jan break means Xmas / New Year is not compromised and is the most difficult in printing terms and asking others for contributions. The other two issues will be published in Apr & Oct, so it will appear to be only 2 blank months to members. These will contain non-time critical articles with more RAILWAY GLOBETROTTERS, of which I have more than can be currently accommodated and they will not then need to be frustratingly split up so much into Parts. In the current format, particularly for Ray Smith’s articles, they take months to complete preventing other ones I receive from easily slotting in and when space is short they have been cut out altogether. Though these will also be produced on a monthly deadline the articles can be prepared in advance and can be finally edited in a matter of a few hours. By sticking to the normal monthly timetable, bar the two blank months, any Society info / notices can still be dropped in as needs. In this way I feel I can continue as Editor.

Before anyone asks, “but we are now only getting 10 instead of 12 issues”, (1) consider the important financial issues stated below and (2) who said the contents have to stay the same. As part of the refresh, I was looking at removing the regular stuff which is basically repeated every month and takes up around 4-5 pages. This tidying up in itself will gain almost a complete issue and includes part of the SOCIETY NOTIICE BOARD, ICRS SALES (back page) and the Location Codes in the STIRLINGSHIRE & GLOUCESTERSHIRE SIGHTINGS. The Society Info can be made available to new members on joining and new items for sale e.g. books are covered as they become available and again a sales list is provided to new members anyway. For those with a computer, up to date info is on our website. Therefore it will be only one issue in terms of total pages of railway content that is ‘lost’. The ‘normal’ issues will have their content adjusted to still report the current and topical issues though as can be seen there will be a delay on some news by a month. We believe we still provide a mag that is superior in this reporting than any other Society mag and you receive it quicker than most expensive proprietary mags so we hope you accept this necessary compromise. Hopefully we can trial this format for 2017 and reassess its success and how I have coped in a year’s time. It may be that I can still slip an 11th issue in the Jul gap, so that total pages of railway content stay virtually the same as now. Initially I just need to get ahead of myself in preparation. I expect these changes to overcome the delays experienced in recent months, as long as I can get to Christmas!!

I know some would like to help in some capacity and that is much appreciated, but it is finding a practical solution to integrating help in the very irregular method I employ. Certainly the biggest workload has now become downloading photos and processing them, but I can’t see a solution to this being done by others as they still have to get to me. Someone else could receive them and then post a disc but as they come in irregularly that will only partly help and by seeing early on what I have enables me to draft out the likely articles. Waiting to see the photos would thwart that. The best help is for members to write more articles. It is still down to a handful who put ‘pen to paper’, please get your name up in lights and let everyone know about an interesting aspect of your railway experience or trip out. Treasurer & Membership Comments: One of the first decisions we made following the need to make changes in TRACKS and the strain placed on officials has been to immediately abandon the 5 year Membership option. This will not only put the Society on an even keel financially but prevents the anguish felt by officials that Members have paid for something well in advance that may not be possible to offer. Just keeping to Annual Membership is more ethical and far simpler for admin. All existing 5 year Memberships will be honoured until they are due for renewal. We had in fact reached a plateau with Members taking out the option and it also removes the complication of Members renewing at the wrong rate, mixing up Standard and eMembership.

The reduction in the number of TRACKS issues will coincidently allow us to finally break even with Membership fees covering the cost of production and admin and we will no longer be reliant on subsidy from the books. This means whatever we take on books can be ploughed back into other activities and benefits for members...watch this space. The stronger financial position will also most likely result in the Membership rates remaining constant now for the foreseeable future. Peter & Colin

Event / Trip Co-ordinator(s): As Carl said many thanks to Lou for her work over the last couple of years but these personnel changes have allowed us to propose a slightly different set up hopefully involving more members. As can be seen from the EVENTS calendar we will have a few basic events we attend spread throughout the year between which trips to other railway locations can be visited. Some of these may be small or possibly niche, but for many enthusiasts, essential places to see that elusive shunter, stored wagon etc. They can be main depots, industrial complexes or preservation sites where viewing stock is normally difficult. The places available may be in the dozens or only 10. To get an idea of locations, look at the itinerary provided by Phoenix Railtours on their website. In this respect we need someone with good knowledge of railway installations and possibly contacts, though these can be built up over time. That person however does not need to do all the admin work as this could be a job for another member as Events Assistant. So two more targeted jobs up for grabs if there are any takers ? To further help and spread the workload, the job of looking after the sales stand on the day at specific events, which is not relevant to trip organising will be ably taken by Christine Field, who assisted Lou in that capacity.

REQUIRED Event / Trip Co-ordinator / Assistant

ideally to be computer literate and have knowledge MS Word / Excel

applications initially by email to Trevor Roots [email protected] but for further info or discuss please contact either Trevor

or Colin [email protected]

we cannot overstate the importance of this request as we again want trips to be an important benefit offered by the Society

Books: As Carl stated his remaining involvement will be supplemented by my help as usual. I already have a draft UK Wagons 2017 ready to follow, therefore our three main titles will be released unaffected by the various changes. One difference for 2017 however is that Irish Railways will be dropped as firstly it was a poor seller and secondly it was last compiled by Lee (since left) and Carl before that. Hence it wasn’t released in 2016. So unless anyone else steps forward with detailed knowledge of Irish Railways, which we struggled with anyway, it will fall by the wayside. In this way we can concentrate on producing our core books to the best standard possible which to most users is more important. Role of Chairman: In case you are wondering how we replace Carl as Chairman then at least until the AGM the senior officials on the committee will rotate the chair for meetings with strategy developed jointly. If the Society needs to be represented beyond this then Simon, our President, will step into the role. Errata (Sep 2016): On p19 the photo of 66746 t&t 66743 were wrongly credited, it should be David Berg. On p33 the second Cl.66 behind 66567 should be 66503. Membership Matters: Subscriptions (Annual): Standard Membership: £17.50 eMembership: £16.00

ICRS Membership gives you: • 10 issues per annum of TRACKS a high quality full colour 64 page magazine - covering all

aspects of railways, posted with Standard Membership or emailed as a pdf with eMembership. • up to 30% discount on all ICRS books (6 currently available). • occasional members only visits to railway facilities. • if requested the latest issue of TRACKS emailed 10 days prior to receiving printed version.

• an informative website, with access and indexes to previous issues of the magazine.

New Members: (* ex-members re-joined) Scott Bremner (Ellon), Alex Candy (Whitstable), Philip Deeley* (Gloucester), James Hadley (Solihull), Neale Harrison (Thornton Cleveleys), David Hughes (Leyland), Peter Hickerton (Leamington Spa), Gary Jackson (South Australia), David Murray (Peterborough), David Reed (Malton), Norman Shepherd (Keighley), Mark Watson* (Hull) - a warm welcome to you all.

Membership Renewal: When your membership is due for renewal this will be indicated along the bottom of the TRACKS address carrier sheet with your expiry date above your name. Therefore please check your address carrier sheet with your copy of TRACKS...before you dispose of it. The reverse of the carrier sheet will be printed with a Renewal form, which can be returned or not, depending on the method of payment (see below). If no renewal is forthcoming after a Reminder form and one month after your expiry date then your membership will be deemed to have lapsed. Please make sure you provide a telephone contact number. If you are ex-directory, don’t worry as it will not be revealed to any third parties but it is important that we are able to contact you other than by post, which is a costly way to communicate and not covered by the membership fee. As a helpful ‘reminder’, members who have set up a bank standing order will have a note to that effect on the front of the carrier sheet but no renewal form on the reverse. Hopefully then no one will renew twice, as has happened !! PLEASE RENEW by the due date, unless you state a reason for the delay. Standard Members are given a short period of grace to allow post to arrive but if paying by BACS there is no reason to delay as the membership for eMembers, by its very nature, lapses on the end of month due date. If you are not renewing please have the courtesy to say so.

Methods of Payment: Please note we cannot accept credit card payments over the telephone.

Internet Banking (BACS) / Standing Order: This is the preferred, most cost effective, secure and quickest way of paying for you and the Society and ensures we get the full amount. Bank details will be included on your renewal form.

Cheque or Postal Order: Please make payable to ICRS and return your remittance with the form to: Colin Pottle (Membership Secretary) ICRS Membership Renewal, 166 Midland Road, Wellingborough, Northants NN8 1NG

PayPal: Pay by credit card or debit card via PayPal on the website. However this incurs a cost to the Society (currently £0.80 for £17.50, £0.74 for £16). You do not need to have your own account, especially if underage, but PLEASE read instructions on providing information on yourself if the applicant is not the PayPal account holder.

Please provide your first name and a landline telephone number, whether joining or renewing and your email. If you renew in the first week of the month, whilst TRACKS is at the printers, you may receive a Renewal / Reminder form but do not worry as the admin process will naturally see things cross in the post. Please also note that cheques are not presented to the bank until the first week of the following month. As well as receiving a new card, renewals will be acknowledged where possible by email.

NB. When using PayPal, please read and follow the instructions on the relevant web page.

Membership Cards: Your membership is valid until the end of month as shown by the first two numbers. For those who joined from mid 2009, the second two numbers are the year. Cards will be sent as soon as practicable following your renewal, separate from TRACKS distribution. No card is sent to international eMembers.

TRACKS Magazine: If you so request, the very latest issue of TRACKS will be emailed as a pdf when it goes off to the printers so you will get it ‘hot off the press’ 10 days before you receive the printed version. That means you have the latest news, some within days of the event occurring. Please email the Editor, Trevor Roots at [email protected] to receive the latest issue by email in addition to the printed version. Similarly the last 11 months are also available by email, but only to members. With this member benefit comes responsibility, please do not share TRACKS with non-members unless you are attempting to get them to join.

Submissions: Articles: Any information / article on any railway related item will be most welcome for inclusion in the magazine. Your visits, travel stories or anecdotes about any part of the railway network, past or present, home or abroad can give pleasure to others or inform of places to visit. This railway hobby of

7

Page 8: TRACKS - Inter City Railway Society homeintercityrailwaysociety.org/TRACKSissues/TRACKS1610.pdfstarted to re-invent the Society which resulted in increasing the size of TRACKS and

ours is made all that more enjoyable by the sharing of information, knowledge and experiences. Neatly hand written submissions are perfectly acceptable, but ideally a typed document is preferable. Better still, if you have a PC and internet connection then send an email.

Photos: Good quality photographs are always welcome, preferably high res jpeg digital photographs via email (not compressed please). With regards to submitting photos can you please help me out by giving the photos a descriptive caption/file name rather than just a number allocated by your camera. Many already do it but it takes far too long to add captions myself before I can then edit them. You may ask why bother, but without details I can’t then file them and easily find them when inserting into TRACKS or find for future reference. Note I may get several photos with the same nos. eg 001, DSC_001, IMG_001. I have to download them all first to one folder then set about sorting and editing, so clearly to have them in subject order is extremely helpful. If I am lucky I have time to do it as they come in but more often than not I end doing them all as I am editing TRACKS at the end of the month. Here is an example of a standard caption: 37025 Newton Abbot (10.37) 03.03.16. If you supply more than one of the same subject with the same time/date then add (1) (2) etc in front of the time/date as with the following example: 158713 + 158720 Elgin (2) (13.16) 27.03.16. Note I have used the + sign for double heading etc. If it is a top and tail situation then just use t&t eg. 31233 t&t DBSO 9703. If you want to add the particular working then please do so after the number but be succinct, no extra words, but you don’t have too as that can be included in the email if you know it. Please stick to style of my examples. Prints are acceptable but please only send those with clear detail, as deep shadow around the bogies in particular cannot be altered after scanning like a digital photo. Please send an SAE if you wish them returned. Please include full contact details with any submissions, including your first name.

The latest date for articles / info for the November 2016 issue is Friday 28th October 2016 with delivery to members after Wednesday 9th November 2016

please check the TRACKS page on the website for date of posting from the printers

Magazine Distribution: TRACKS is distributed direct from the printers to members in a clear plastic wrapping with an address carrier sheet (reverse printed with a Renewal / Reminder form if appropriate). If any member fails to receive their copy after one week from the above estimated delivery date then please contact the Editor.

Magazine Contributors: (* new this month) Thanks to Chris Addoo, David Berg, John Brace, Mike Brook, Paul Clifton, Harold Cooper, Peter Davis, Dennis Dey, Neil Dix, David Doulton, Martin Evans, Derek Everson, Alex Ford, Iain Gardiner, Michael Hayman, James Holloway, Geoff Hope, Colin James, Rod Johnson, Terry Leggett, Ian McAlpine, Keith Partlow, Gareth Patterson, Richard Payling*, Colin Pidgeon, Colin Pottle, Phil Quantock, Mike Rumens, Mark Sainsbury, Norman Smith, Ray Smith, Derek Sneddon, David Spencer, Graham Stockton, Paul Sumpter, Andrew Turnidge, Malcolm Wallace, David Williams, Carl Watson & Trevor Roots. EVENTS

In order to give members as much warning and an idea of the bones of our Event programme for 2017, the following dates are shown below, though final details will need TBC.

AGM 8th April 2017 – Venue TBC: Our AGM will be held at a large preservation railway which will include a ride and workshop visit. Venue TBC.

OPEN DAYS DRS Carlisle Kingmoor, 10.00-16.00, 15th or 22nd July 2017 - TBC: The annual DRS Open Day is to be held at Carlisle Kingmoor in 2017 most probably in July. The exact date is TBC. We will be there with our sales stand.

MEMBERS ONLY EVENT Eastleigh Works, Saturday 9th September 2017 - TBC: Following our previous successful visits we are hoping to organise another Members Only visit to Eastleigh Works, though instead of in June it is in September to spread out the events. It will probably start at 14.15. As in 2016 it will be necessary to make a charge (TBC) to cover the normal visit fee (which Arlington donate to charity) and organising stewards, but for that you will get access to all areas until 16.30 and cab rides. There will be refreshments (TBC) which will be subsidised by the Society. Nearer the time firm details will be provided with info on how to apply for a ticket.

PRESERVATION NEWS

Epping Ongar Railway (EOR): A former GER footbridge was finally opened for use on the 16th September 2016 allowing quicker access between the platforms at North Weald. This has not been possible since the demolition of the former concrete footbridge. Under restoration for 5 years it was rescued from Churchfields where it spanned the Central Line. Access can still be had via the level crossing. The photo below shows the footbridge on the 27th September 2016.

The 06.19 southbound service from Milton Keynes to London Euston comprised of LMT 350264 + 350117 partially derailed on the landslip covering the Up Slow line at around 07.00 and was struck a glancing blow just inside the tunnel by northbound LMT 350233 the Down Slow line on the 06.39 London Euston to Birmingham New Street. News from Norfolk by Stuart Moore: (photos by Stuart unless shown otherwise) The second Cl.68 hauled short set has remained in operation for the month. It was originally planned for this set to stop running at the end of September but it has been extended to the end of December, apparently in case of wheel flats on the units, which were a widespread issue last year. The month started with 68016 and 68024 on the set but 68016 failed on the 5th. It was replaced by 68004 which was the ecs moves loco for Crown Point, usually to Bounds Green or Ilford. 68004 was later replaced by 68022 (noted on 20th).

37405 t&t 37422 & 68024 t&t 68022 were seen at Norwich at 14.11 on their respective trains to Lowestoft and Gt. Yarmouth (Paul Sumpter)

The original short set hasn't been without its own problems with 37405 failing in Gt. Yarmouth on the 2nd and having to be hauled back by 37419. It was back running on the 5th and 6th but 37405 failed again and had to be returned to Crewe for repairs, hauled back by 68016 on the 9th (see photo below at Tamworth LL at 15.23 by Peter Davis).

The replacement was 37422 which ran with 37419 (see above on the 15th arriving into Norwich from Lowestoft at 16.37) for the majority of the month until 37419 was replaced by repaired 37405 so it could return to Crewe. Still no large logo 37's over here!

On the 15th 37602 t&t 37609 on a NR test train ran from Cambridge to Cambridge via Norwich (see above at 18.07), Gt. Yarmouth and Lowestoft. On the 19th 37421 t&t DBSO 9702 arrived from Derby returning to Derby on the 20th at 17.13 (see below). Finally 950001 arrived in Norwich on the 21st running to several locations over the next few days.

The GBRf 15 railtour arrived on the 9th at 15.53 lead by 73961 + 73964 t&t 66707 on the rear. Unfortunately it was running late and departed even later for Gt. Yarmouth powered by the 66. This was the first visit of a Cl.73/9 to Norwich and the first run of any 73 to Gt. Yarmouth. The Northern Belle ran from Norwich to Winchester on the 16th powered by 68016 and 68017. Later that day WCRC 57315 t&t 47826 arrived with the ecs for the NENTA tour to Blaenau Ffestiniog the following day. To add interest 37669 (see below) came along as well to haul steam loco 76084 from the North Norfolk Railway to Carnforth the following Monday, the 19th, it was seen trailing the steam loco and support coach through Trowse, the 4MT making an fantastic sight.

The stone traffic into Norwich yard began again with 66097 noted on 21st and 66109 on the 28th.

Finally 57303 arrived in Norwich on the 30th hauling three blue grey liveried Mk2s 5961, 6024 and 9504 all ex-works on 5Z30 10.00 Burton Nemesis - Norwich, as stock replacement for the second short set (see photo above at Wymondham at 13.26 by Keith Partlow). DAYS OUT

Welsh Narrow Gauge by Martin Evans: On 8th September I decided to attempt to travel on both the Ffestiniog Railway (FR) and Welsh Highland Railway (WHR) on the same day departing from Wrexham by rail at 08.00. Accordingly everything worked fine arriving to connect at Blaenau Ffestiniog with the FR at 11 30. The loco in traffic was double Fairlie 0-4-4-0T ‘Earl of Merioneth’ at the head of a very well patronised service. At Tan-y-Bwlch we crossed with double Fairlie 0-4-4-0T ‘David Lloyd George’. On arriving right time at Porthmadog Beyer Garratt 2-6-2+2-6-2 143 was waiting to depart with the 12.55 service to Caernarvon which I duly boarded, this too was well patronised. Eventually crossing at Rhyd Ddu with fellow Beyer Garratt 2-6-2+2-6-2 138 we proceeded forward to Caernarvon, passing Beyer Garratt 2-6-2+2-6-2 87 on shed at Dinas in light steam, ahead of the coming weekend steam gala on the WHR. Upon arrival at Caernarvon I made my way for a bus to Bangor where I caught the Birmingham International service to Ruabon arriving on time at 17 55 marking the end of an enjoyable jaunt.

Due to the tight connections and time restraints pictures were difficult to take but WHR Beyer Garratt 143 is seen at Caernavon running round its train. This loco was the last built by Beyer, Peacock & Co, Manchester. It returned to service in May 2016 after an 18 month overhaul. The other two Beyer Garratts mentioned above, 87 and 138 were illustrated in the May 2015 issue, p.45 & 46, ed.

RAMBLINGS OF A RAIL ENTHUSIAST by David Spencer – 1987

I try to provide extra detail or follow up photos on the items of traction shown in photos, other than number, date and location as provided by Dave, including what became of them particularly with regards to preservation.

above 312202 in NSE livery, Bescot, 4th March 1987

Apart from local stuff around Bescot and Birmingham New Street, my first biggish trip was in March to my annual union visit to London and for the first time I decided to go to Banbury and get a Cl.115 DMU into Marylebone. They were not used to through passengers and I got some funny looks with my Redditch to London ticket.

Photo opportunities presented themselves at Banbury, Clapham Junction, Stratford, Finsbury Park and a ride on the Gospel Oak - Barking line, to get the DMUs (see above) and down to North Woolwich, operated then by Cl.416 two car EMUs. I also went into the North Woolwich station museum before walking under the Thames and getting a train home from Woolwich Arsenal. All this so familiar to me now was all new back then and l had a lot of living to catch up on.

At Easter I went on a Christian Festival called spring harvest at Butlins, Minehead and on the way down I took my mother to her friend near Newport. That allowed me a bit of line siding at Seven Tunnel Junction as well as the West Somerset Railway, whose trains pass by the camp car park.

The sprinter revolution had started and I was used to Cl.150/1 locally but on a trip to Blackpool for the union I saw 150/2s for the first time.

There was a daily Tyseley duty to Llandudno using heritage DMUs and I decided to try one out in July and had a Cl.118 on the 09.23 from Birmingham New Street and I visited the then new Crewe Heritage Centre.

On the 26th September the old Birmingham Moor Street station

closed and the new one opened with trains running through the tunnel into Snow Hill again. Before this, CENTRO organised a charity walk through the tunnel which caused massive interest and huge queues which I heard took up to two hours to clear. By getting there early I avoided these long delays.

On the day and amid all the normal trains, steam shuttles were organised with 7029 ‘Clun Castle’ and 46443 alternating trains between Moor Street and Dorridge whilst I viewed and photographed from Widney Manor and Moor Street. Talking of Dorridge reminds me of another little anecdote. Whilst growing up, a lot of stations had dual names and sometime, I think in the 1970s, some faceless bureaucrat decided that one name was sufficient. Small Heath and Sparkbrook and Acocks Green and South Yardley became Small Heath and Acocks Green respectively as both stations were in the correct part of Birmingham. However Knowle and Dorridge is in the centre of Dorridge, but they still named it Knowle some two miles away. The local press made great mileage over this decision as we all know mocking the railways is considered fair game to journalists and this kept them going for months until BR saw sense and renamed it Dorridge.

Three days later was another Tyseley Open day and unusually I took loads of pictures. Among the visitors were two Deltics, D9000 and D9019, two Peaks, D4 and D100 and a selection of Cls.08, 35, 37, 40, 47 and 77.

If memory serves me correctly there was a supermarket promotion and on the 19th October I went to Leeds, real pioneering stuff as I hadn't been there since spotting days. GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN

This is an occasional series devoted to showing withdrawn and ultimately scrapped rolling stock around the UK. If you have photos and any accompanying info, then please forward to the Editor.

Class 13: Created in 1965 for the new Tinsley Marshalling Yard hump to provide a more powerful but still flexible shunter to avoid grounding, six Cl.08s were formed as master + slave units with the cab removed from the slave loco.

D4501 (13001) - master D4190 and slave D4189 D4502 (13002) - master D4187 and slave D3697 D4500 (13003) - master D4188 and slave D3698

They were initially coupled cab to cab but later this was changed to the more familiar master nose to slave cab formation. With the closure of the hump at the end of 1984 the shunters became obsolete.

13001 withdrawn January 1985 scrapped BREL Swindon Works May 1985 13002 withdrawn June 1981 scrapped BREL Swindon Works October 1982 13003 withdrawn January 1985 scrapped BREL Doncaster Works 16th September 1986

One of three, 13003 is seen below taken sometime in 1981 by Colin Pottle.

RAILWAY GLOBETROTTERS

Around the World in 40 Days by Ray Smith - Part 8: Day 30 – Sunday 1st June 2014: We were to go by road to Jasper today with a stop at Lake Louise on route. When we arrived at the lake there was still snow all around and one of the group slipped and broke her wrist. The nearest hospital was back in Banff so back we went. She was told the plastering would be around 2 hours. The hospital was only a very short walk from the station so I went back there. A few years ago I took a photo of a freight crossing the river with a mountain in the background.

It is one of my favourite shots so I went back to the same spot. How it had changed with more vegetation spoiling the original view. I went to the bridge to find a decent spot for a photograph and then walked back to the station nearby. For some reason I looked back and a Grizzly Bear was on the track only a few yards away from where I had been (see photo left). It lay down next to the track and a crowd gathered at a safe distance. There is a No Trespassing sign but I

am sure the Grizzly using the rail as a pillow will keep people away !! Within seconds the barriers came down and a freight came through (see photo below), after that there was no sign of the bear!

Day 31 – Monday 2nd June 2014: The morning was spent on the Jasper tramway which is a cable car that takes you high above Jasper to a snow covered view point and restaurant which seemed to have sold out of everything we asked for so I will downgrade it to snack bar! From the top there were tremendous views of Jasper and you could see the long freights snaking their way through but sadly too far away to get good photographs. After that it was back to the station for the late afternoon departure of the Canadian. This is a three day (and night) journey to Toronto, no open balconies on this train and only a few stops on route. The first scheduled one was for Edmonton, just before midnight. Last time I passed there I noted over

Day 32 –Tuesday 3rd June 2014: Now sound asleep I woke when the train jerked entering Edmonton station, I had missed everything so back to sleep !! The next very short stop was Saskatoon then a scheduled stop at Winnipeg. This was due to arrive at 20.30 for a three hour train servicing stop and a chance to get off and have a look round. However, as we arrived after midnight we just stayed and slept on the train.

Day 33 – Wednesday 4th June 2014: All this time on the train plenty of other trains were seen passing. I tried to take photographs through the window but they were pretty bad with reflections on dirty glass. Eventually the train stopped at Sioux Lookout, Ontario. Here the train was re-fuelled from a road tanker that was on the platform (see photo below). A chance to get and stretch our legs before the final overnight to Toronto.

DMU

Cl.117 DMU 51360 was relocated from EVR to GWR in 2013 having been sold. It was stripped down for restoration in 2014, following engine repairs. From Aug to Dec 2015 it was returned to its former glory including removal of the 1990s headlight, as seen at Toddington on the 14th September 2016 by Derek Everson.

LIGHT RAIL & METRO NEWS

Metrolink by Geoff Hope: On the 1st September an incident between a van and tram at Wythenshawe, on the Airport line delayed services while the van was removed. No injuries were reported. On the 8th September vandals threw jump leads onto the overhead wires at Timperley on the Altrincham line which incurred delays of two hours while the jump leads were retrieved. On the 13th September storms brought chaos to the network when lightning hit two of the sub stations at Prestwich and Radcliffe on the Bury line causing disruption to services well into the evening. A further incident of a car finishing on the tracks at Victoria happened late on the 15th September.

The final rails have been laid for the SCC with the overhead lines to be completed in time for Christmas. It is hoped testing and commissioning will resume early 2017.

Tram 3098 has been named ‘Gracie Fields’ after the famous Rochdale singer. 3119 entered service on the 14th September on the Shaw & Crompton-East Didsbury route. All 21 CAF Urbo 3's are now in service.

The Snow Hill tram stop in Birmingham city centre is to be re-named to St Chads from January 2017 as it is causing confusion with passengers thinking it has direct access to the mainline station, which it originally had. Even though the stop is alongside the station (see photo below taken on the 22nd July 2016), it is now a long walk between the two. The Bull Street stop will instead be marketed as the interchange, though this is still further away than the original which was right in the station (at the end of the track between tram 26 and railings in photo below, to become platform 4). You would have thought someone could have foreseen the obvious problem !!
