The TPS is designed to complement the Wildlife Acoustics SM2BAT ultrasonic bat detector, located either at or near ground level, while the microphones can be situated up to 50 metres above ground level. The design addresses several common problems associated with elevated microphones and leads. Previous attempts have been slow, cumbersome and difficult to operate. The TPS however is quick to operate and greatly reduces the chance of jams and tangles when raising or lowering a microphone cluster. Also, researchers have found that the inherent noise associated with unrestrained microphone cables and hoisting lines are detrimental to quality recordings, often completely obliterating any meaningful recorded data. Our product overcomes these problems through careful design. Our standard TPS accommodates one, two or three independent ultrasonic mics. Options include the omni- directional SMX-US or high gain SMX-UT weatherproof microphones. The addition of the ultrasonic directional horn to either mic model achieves directionality similar to that of other well know bat detector systems. For bird studies, the TPS can be fitted with omni directional SMX-II audio spectrum microphones.
