Many among us have lost muchin recent weeks as the result ofthe Canterbury earthquake andaftershocks.Butoutofadversityourcommunityspirithasgrownstrongerand we continue tomarvel that noliveswerelostinthedisaster.

Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu has also grown stronger,proving that people aremore important than buildingsandthatonatemporarybasiswecandrawtogetherourresourcesandrespondtothedisastereventhoughourown buildingwas not available. The businesses alsoshowed their flexibility, applying their own responseplanstokeepoperationsgoing.Ourwhānauandmaraewere just as quick in helping the community, giving ahandtoneighbours,andofferingmanaakitangatoall.

Ihavebeenoverwhelmedwithoffersofhelpandsupport,particularly by our Papatipu Rūnanga and other iwi.DonationsmadetotheTautokoWhānautrustfundthatwillbeproperlyadministeredandusedtosupportthosewhohavesuffered.

Inmany respects thehardworkof rebuildinghasonlybegun.Wemustbereadyforthelonghaulandpreparedto accept that some around us will be worn down bytheenormityofthetasksinfrontofthem.Inthecomingmonths and even years we will need to support and

extendourcompassionandsympathytothoserebuildingbusinessesandhomes.

OnbehalfofTeRūnanga,Iwishtothankallwhohavegivenselflesslyduring thedisasterandrecovery.Eachcompassionateactionhasaddedtothestrengthofouriwi,andtothestrengthofourwidercommunity.

One of the more important messages I have seen inrecentdays is thatallwhānau in theearthquakezoneshouldnotgatherkai from localwaterways–streams,creeks, rivers, and the sea – because of sewage andpollutioncontamination. It is important forthehealthofourwhānauthatwewaitfortheauthoritiestosaythatthewaterwaysaresafe formahingakai, swimmingoranytypeofrecreationalactivity.

TeRūnangaalsowishestoassureourpeopleoutsideoftheWaitaharohethattheearthquakerecoveryprocessis not preventing us from doing the daily business ofsupportingNgāiTahuwhānui.TeRūnangaishereandremainshereforallNgāiTahu.

She is the long awaited mokopuna of Mārāma(née Reeves) and Murray Burgess. Rachael iscurrently based in Kuwait and is always keepingan eye (via the internet) on all things Ngāi Tahu.

Well done HaleyCongratulations to Haley Baxter (Rayner whānau) forher recent achievement at the first Youth Olympics.Haleywasawardedasilvermedalforherperformancein the mixed teams judo event. The Youth OlympicswereheldinSingaporefrom14to26August.Haleywhocompeted in the52 to63kgcategorywas theonlyNZJudoRepresentative. It’s great to see your hardworkrewarded,yourwhānaumustbeproud.

Iwasup,Blane jumpedoutofbed,but Joanwouldn’t rolloutofbed,shewassaying “ohmyGod”.“Getoutofbed”, Isaid “Ican’t”,she replied,soBlanehelpedherup,andofcoursethelanguageusedwasnotverynice.

Late afternoon on Monday we had power again. OnTuesday our marae was ready for any whānau whowantedtostay.OnThursdaywehadourfirstwhānauintostay,afamilyofseven.Thenanotherwhānaucame.Nowwehaveamaraefullofourrelationswhohavehadhouseproblems.It’salovelyatmosphereandeveryoneishappy.Thecooksareverybusyandsoareweeatingtheirkai.

Theorganisationhasbeenveryhelpfulwithallsortsofdonations,kohaandhelp.Evenourtamarikiaregettinginvolved,washingandwipingdishes,toiletcleaningandcarryingparcelsinside.Jumbohasalsojoinedtheteamwashing pots and pans. To everybody, “just ride thewaves,gowith theflow”.Thechildrenare lovely, theyalllistenandarenotabother.Ourwhānauaresogood,preparingmealsforaround116to120aday.

Eightdayssincetheearthquake,Saturday11September,itwasverycalm.Lotsofpeoplewerewalkingaround.Sunday 12 September, a very quiet day with a lovelyservice (whakamoemiti) and lunch, and we all restedatthemarae.AuntyKuiandIaresittinghereallalone,withacoupleofwhānautalking(nothinginteresting).OnMonday13wehadavisitfromaKaiapoiwhānau(verynice).We still had about 60 staying.Another daywithkumushaking,butasIsaid,“gowiththeflow”.

The marriage of ManaiaRehutoEdieMokeatRāpakiandtheParatawhānau’scombinedbirthdaycelebrations.

Rāpaki’s Shake Up Forourkaumātua,(wecurrentlyhavearound23 livinginRāpaki)particularlythoseontheirown,themorninginquestionwasafrighteningexperience.Butasonewouldexpect, themenofRāpakiwerequicklyon thescene.Theywentaroundcheckingthepātoensureeveryonewas okay, and a delivery of fresh water was muchappreciated. Thanks to the men concerned for theirmanaaki.OneannoyanceseveralresidentssharedwasthetimeittookforthepowertoberestoredinRāpaki.

Ofthe40dwellingsinourRāpakikāinga,mostifnotallare okay. Some have minor damage such as cracks,

gapsbetweenwallsandroof line,chimneysdownandmissingtiles.Wearetoldthesethingsarefixable.Somewhānauvacatedtheirhomes,orwenttostaywithotherwhānau for support as the aftershocks continued. Itwasn’tmuchofawelcomeforDavid(Ginger)CouchandsonAaronwhohadjustarrivedfromPerthforaholiday.TheofficeitselfremainsintactalthoughonefilingcabinettoppledoverandcreatedabitofamessforHerewini,whowas first on the scene.Themaraewharekai andkautaarefine.Acoupleofpicturesendeduponthefloorand there were some minor glass breakages but thetukutukupanelsareallokay.Ournewbuildingappearsfineon theoutside. Inspectionshavebeencarriedoutbutnoofficialreporthasbeenreceivedyet.

Quake Update EightdaysonandtheofficeinRāpakicanreportthatourcommunity isquietlygoingabout thebusinessofdailyliving – understandably some individuals rather morecautiously thenothers,but there isageneralsenseofcalm.

Communication systems have been no more up anddownthanusual.It issomethingwehavelearnttolivewithhere.Despitethedisruption,paperswereoutintimeforboththeTPTandTHONWAnnualGeneralMeetingsscheduledforSunday12October.

Haruru ana te whenua, aurere ana te whare i te haka a Rūamoko…September2010willberememberedformanyreasons,theBlackFernswinninganotherWorldCup,theWarriorsmaking the NRL play-offs and Metallica agreeing tocome to Christchurch. But for those of us who live inChristchurch,wewillneverforgetthemorningofSaturday4September,whenthemajorityofuswerewokenbytheviolentshakingofa7.1magnitudeearthquake.

As I write this on the evening of “day four” anotheraftershockrumblesintolife,onlymagnitude3.9accordingtotheGeoNetreport–justababy,enoughtogetyourattention longenough towonder if this is thenext “bigone”,butthenitstopsasfastasithadarrived.

We have been fortunate, Port Levy and our maraehave little or no damage and our rūnanga office hasbeendeclaredsafeandwill reopen. In the interimouradministratorhasremoteaccesstoemailsandhasbeenable to keep most of the day-to-day business tickingover,providingupdatesonFacebookforwhānaulivingoutsideofChristchurch.

ItwilltakesometimebeforeChristchurchanditspeoplesleepsoundlyatnight.Butwewillrecover,andrecoverwe will. We must acknowledge the City Council, theemergencyservices,themanyvolunteersandallthosewhocameandhavecontinuedtohelpthosewhohavelosthomesandpositions.WethankallourwhānauandfriendswholiveoutsideofChristchurchforyourprayers,arohaandwordsofsupport.Weacknowledgethepeopleof the Tararua area who have had to endure floodingandalsothefamiliesofthosekilledintheplanecrashinHokitikaonthedayoftheChristchurchearthquake.

Planting Day KoukourarataOnSunday22August,50whānauandfriendsgatheredforadaysplantingalongthebanksofthemightyawaoKoukourarata.Tāwhirimāteasmileduponus,givingusabeautifulday.Withthe900nativetreesplanted,makingatotalof4,000,KoukourarataisnowthelongestriparianfencedandplantedstreamonTePātakaoRākaihautū(BanksPeninsula).

On a wet Friday 13 August, around 50 descendentsof Ngāire and Thomas Heath came from all over thecountry to gather atWaihaoMarae. The descendentsspenttheweekendatthemaraere-connectingwitheachotherandtheirrohe.Beforetheweekendkickedoff,two

wet and weary travelling whānau were rescued fromthebreachedWaihaoRiver.Thebrave rescuers foundthemselveskneeandsometimesneckhighintheragingwaters.

The whare came alive withmuch laughter, song, andfoodforthesoul.Themanyrakatahiwereinspiredtobebackattheplaceoftheirtipuna.Itwasencouragingfortheolder ones that thenext generationwereeager toabsorbmoreoftheirculture.

Manystorieswere toldby thekaumātua.Onahistoricwalk of Māori Road, Jim Heath recounted stories ofthecolourfulpeoplewhoonce livedthere,bringingtheruinedcottagesbacktolife.

OnSaturdaynightthewhānaurecognisedtheenduringand close relationship it has with the neighbouringfarming community and hosted them for a deliciousdinner (thank you particularly to Dianne Holmes’daughters, Vicky, Leanne, and Ruth for working up asweatinthekitchen!).Thiswasfollowedbyaneveningof skitswith thewhānaumore thanwilling to sacrificeitselfforthecomedicpleasureoftheaudience.

The talents of the rakatahi amazed the whānau andvisitors: the guitar skills of Tane Lanyon and HunterAshworth,buddingpianistClaudiaLanyon,singingfromCourtneyCasserlyandKishanaRentoul,hakabyPierre-Louis Gicquel and Tane Lanyon and a powerful kapahakabyTiaandEllaHayes.Theauntiesalsohad theaudiencedoubledover in laughterwith theirskitabouttheirwonderfullivesaswidows(itshouldbementionedtheirhusbandswerepresentandverymuchalive).

The tāne and wāhine of Ngāire and Thomas Heathencouraged their whānau to take part in the future ofWaihao Marae and it was obvious everyone had thedesiretobeinvolved.ThewhānauextendsitsthankstoChrisCasserlyandKaraHayesformakingitallhappen,DaveHolmesforworkingsohardtomaketheweekendstressfreeandNickRentoulforhissuperbtalentsontheguitarandvideoproduction.Thankyoualsotoeveryonewhomuckedintoprepareandsetupformeals,cleanupafterwardsandwhobroughtanattitudeofconnectednessandrespectnotonlyfortheirwhānau,buttheirwhānaupassedandforthesacredplaceatwhichtheygathered.

Te Hononga is jointly owned by Ngāi Tahu and theChristchurch City Council. The building, originally theNewZealandPostMailCentre,wasredevelopedintoasix-starGreenBuildingbyNgāiTahuProperty.Many whānau joined Ngāi Tūāhuriri at the ceremony,including Ngāti Waewae who gifted the beautiful andnoblepounamumauristonenamedNgāWaioMamari,whichrestswithinthefoyer.NgāiTahuwashonouredtohaveKingTuheitiaPakiandhiscontingentfromTainuiattendtheceremony,includingTainuichairmanTukoroirangiMorgan.Morethan270peopleattendedtheblessingwithmanyspeakersreflectingonthepositiveunionandpartnershipbetweenTeRūnangaandtheChristchurchCityCouncil,andtheconnectionbetweenNgāiTahuWhānuiandthepeopleofthecity.

Oneofthemostdramaticmomentsduringtheceremonywas the unveiling of the pouwhenua, named Te PouHerenga Waka, which means, ‘a post that brings allpeople together’.Thepoudepicts three layersof tribalsettlement in Canterbury: Waitaha, Ngāti Māmoe andNgāiTahu.ItwascarvedbyFayneRobinsonwhowasassistedbyMahanaCoulstonandJamesYork.TheboldfigureatitsbaserepresentsthespiritsofthefoundersofŌtautahi,bothMāoriandPākehā.

In late July members of Te Rūnanga o Ngāi TahuHSNO Kōmiti attended the final Environmental RiskManagementAgency (ERMA),NationalMāoriNetworkhui, atWaiwhetuMarae (Lower Hutt). Over the yearsthesegatheringshavebeenamongthemostsuccessfuland enduring initiatives of any government agency,engagingmeaningfullywithtangatawhenuafromacrossthecountryonkeynationalissuesandstrategies.

It was with some concern that we participated in thisfinalhui,andponderedifthemergingofERMAintotheNew Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) wouldseeanendtothissuccessfulmodelofconsultation.TheEPAwill bring the functions of ERMA,Ministry for theEnvironment and the new Emissions Trading Schemeunder one agency. The legislation for setting the EPAup isdue togo toaSelectCommittee in thenext fewmonths.There were a number of presentations on the lastevening to recognise contributions to the network huiovertheyears.TeRūnangaoNgāiTahuKōmitimembersreceivedanawardinrecognitionof:

• BeingthefirstiwitoestablishaHazardousSubstancesandNewOrganisms(HSNO)Policy.

Coping with earthquake Stress Symptoms

The earthquake and ongoing aftershocks have been a very frightening experience for everyone. The anxiety that most people are feeling is a normal response to this extraordinary event.It is common to experience: • Fatigueandexhaustionparticularlyastime has gone on. • Feelingonedge,nervous,andtense.• Sleepdisturbance,insomniaandnightmares.• Beingeasilystartledandlookingoutfor danger.• Swingsinemotion,includingtearfulness, irritability,anger,fear,sadness,griefor feeling numb or detached.• Anxietysymptomslikearacingheart,rapid breathing,trembling,lossofappetiteand stomach upsets.• Impairedconcentration,decisionmakingand memory.• Feelingasenseoflackofcontrol.• Thoughtsandmemoriesabouttheevent continuingtopopintoyourmind,evendays orweeksafterwards.• Increasedconflictinourrelationships,over- protectivenessorsocialwithdrawal.

Reactionscanbetriggeredbyfurtheraftershocks,thingswereadorsee,andsounds,smells,ormovements that remind you of the earthquake. Usually,thesereactionswillgoawayoverthefollowingdaystoweeks.Allowyourselfplentyoftimetoworkthroughtheexperienceoftheearthquake.Therearemanydifferentwaysofcoping,suchas:• Talkingtofamily,friends,neighboursand colleagues.• Keepingregularsleeppatterns(appreciating aftershocks may be disrupting sleep at times).• Re-establishingusualroutines.• Eatingregularlyandbeingmindfulofnutrition.• Keepphysicallyactivewhichhelpsreduce tension and anxiety.• Pacingyourselfbykeepingbusybutalso taking time to relax.

• Rememberhavingmorethanfourtosix cups of caffeinated drinks per day may increaseyouranxietylevels,andinterfere withyoursleep.• Withalcoholyoumayfinditinitiallyrelaxes you,butasthealcoholwithdrawsfromyour system,itcanincreaseyouranxietyand affect your sleep patterns.

Youmaybeworriedaboutthereactionofyourchildren.Nowmostchildrenarebackatschoolandasenseofnormalityisreturning,alotof the reactions they may have had may be resolving.However,youngerchildrenmaystillbemoreclingy,beexperiencingbaddreams(notalwaysjustabouttheearthquake),havealossofappetite,andmaycomplainofheadachesandstomachaches.Suggestionsforsupportingchildren include:• Bereassuringandlistentotheirconcerns– remember their fears are genuine to them.• Yourchildmaybeworriedtheywillbe separated from their parents. Talk this throughwiththem.Yourchildmightalso wanttore-enactordrawpicturesaboutthe earthquake and this is okay.• Trynottoshowexcessiveanxietywithyour responsetotheearthquakeaschildrenwill pick up on this.• Returntosomesenseofnormality,suchas playingwithfriendsandgoingbackto school. • Regularroutinesareimportant,suchas meals and bedtimes.• Ifchildrenaredemonstratingaggressionor angerthenuseanurturingbutfirm approach,pointingouttheirbehaviourisnot acceptable.
