Scope
1. Context and Drivers in our Foodand Feed supply:
The (animal!) Protein crunch2. Why Insects ?
Alternative ANIMAL proteins3. Role for organics
Insects don’t like pesticides….

A Global Protein Challenge
We are feeding:
• 7 billion people (42 kg of MEAT/ 20 Kg of FISH (average capita food availability)
• < 1 billion pet animals (dogs, cats, birds, fish, horses, .......zoo’s)
Farmed animals for human consumption
• 20 billion chickens/ 1,5 cattle,pigs/ 1,2 ducks/ 1,1 b sheep/ 1 b goats/ 0,8 b rabbits/....
• 70 million tons of farmed fish (aquaculture).......

How long can we sustain this model of protein supply?• Livestock have relatively
low feed conversion ratios (FCR) i.e. low efficiency in transforming vegetable proteins into animal proteins
• 6.4 billions of feed are fed annually to livestock: 18% are food-grade legumes and grains fit for humans
• Water consumption is growing twice as fast as population growth, while the global average water footprint of livestock is also growing (waterfootprint.org)
• Beef: 15400 litre/kg• Sheep meat: 10400 litre/kg• Pig meat: 5990 litre/kg• Goat meat: 5520 litre/kg• Poultry meat :4330 litre/kg • Milk: 1020 litre/kg• Maize: 1220 litre/kg• Soybean: 2440 litre/kg

2. Protein alternatives
• Capture more out of oceans: Medusae, Jelly fish, krill,...
• Farming the sea: macro, micro Algae (Spirula – High tech)
• Artificial proteins: meat (120.000$/kg), synthetic (6$/kg)
• More out of Agro-industry processing byproducts: maisgluten, brewers grains,...
• Farming Less common plant protein sources: oil seeds; legumes, forages, trees (Moringa),.......
• .........
Compete for land, water, fertilizers, farm inputs
TP ORGANICS Organic Innovation Days Bruxelles Dec.2015
Why Insects ?
• Provide enough food protein for 2 billion people
• Natural feed of chickens, carnivore fish, pigs,...
• Good proteins, fats, minerals, + micro nutrients
• Feed conversion efficiency: 4x cattle
• Can be Fed with organic waste, not competing with foods for humans
• Fast breeding cycle (10 days to 1 month)
• Less water, land, CHG,..
• Socially more inclusive – easy to farm, no need for huge investment or “high tech” skills
• Opportunities for business and jobs at any level, everywhere
• May help reduce use of antibiotics in feed......
• Interdisciplinary: food-feed-health-waste disposal- climate change...
• Global market potential........

Insect as (organic) food?
TP ORGANICS Organic Innovation Days Bruxelles Dec.2015DAGLI INSETTI UN CONTRIBUTO PER NUTRIRE IL PIANETA
2 billion people are eating insects!
1900 species used as food
TP ORGANICS Organic Innovation Days Bruxelles Dec.2015
Insect are naturally organic
• Insect don’t like pesticides…
• Insects, to be safe food and feed, need to eat organic feed since some species are quite tolerant to heavy metals and they tend to concentrate them (Bioaccumulation)
• Insect are a better source of animal proteins than many meat and fish product and can be used as enhancer in food with nutraceutic properties (e.g. more antioxidants and better fats)
TP ORGANICS Organic Innovation Days Bruxelles Dec.2015
Conclusions
• Many insects are natural allies of organic farmers: bees, aphid predators & parasites, beneficailnematodes, etc.
• Raising insect can complement farm income with low investment, and this is important in family farms and in developing countries
• Can provide natural feed to free range chicken and may restore a more natural organic aquaculture
• They are a more sustainable source of protein for humans too, facing global warming challenges
