FCTV A NNUAL A PPEAL 2010 October 2010 FALMOUTH COMMUNITY TELEVISION FCTV PRESENTS TOWN MEETING UNDERWRITERS NEEDED If you own or manage a business, please support FCTV coverage of Town Meeting by becoming an underwriter. In exchange, FCTV will produce a promotional underwriting spot for you. All underwriting spots are cablecast multiple times each night of Town Meeting LIVE, and then three times a day, seven days a week for six months on Channel 13. Let the community know that you support Falmouth Community Television coverage of Town Meeting LIVE. For more information, please call our Executive Director Debra Rogers at 508.457.0800 PSA Day: Thursday, OCT. 7 th See page 4! O nce again the air turns crisp, the leaves turn colors, and we look forward to the holidays of autumn and winter. It is a season of change, a time to reflect on the year gone by. Here at FCTV, this past year was a year of many changes. The entire facility was remodeled and updated in January and February of 2009. We were able to acquire new equipment including: a Broadcast Pix Slate 1000 switching system, youth-friendly Flip Cameras, energy-efficient fluorescent lighting for the studio and a chroma key green curtain allowing us to create digital backgrounds for studio programs. As promised we began offering Video on Demand of government meetings which can be viewed at www.fctv.org We are pleased to announce that by the end of 2010, we will have taken on management of a new channel, channel 15 on the cable system, which will become the Government Access Channel. This will free up time on channel 13 for public access programming which has been hard pressed to find prime time slots with so much meeting coverage happening. We will begin with a bulletin board system and look forward to expanding to a full playback system for this new channel. We all saw how critical the bulletin board system was as a means of communicating with our neighbors during the water boil situation and Hurricane Earl threat. We remain committed to being a part of our town emergency operations and having two channels to post emergency notices will further our ability to get critical information to our neighbors at a moments notice. This year we look forward to purchasing new monitors, ZI8 Pocket camcorders for our growing citizen journalism program and for producers looking to carry more lightweight cameras, an IPAD to be used as both a teleprompter and remote switcher for the Broadcast Pix control room switcher, QVidium hardware that will allow us to transport programming over the Internet and out to viewers via our local channels from any location where there is an Internet connection and an IMAC editing system. As many of you know this is sorely needed to accommodate our growing number of editors, particularly with the success of the Village Green Magazine program. None of the exciting changes that occurred over the past year, nor any of the purchases we look forward to making this year take place without the generosity of our members, businesses, community groups, non-profit organizations and the community-at-large, all of whom provide financial support by donating to our Annual Appeal. This past December, the town license with Comcast expired. While the new license is negotiated, we remain unsure what funds will be available and so more than ever, we count on you to help to make FCTV the best it can be. As a non-profit 501 (c3) public charity, donations to FCTV are tax deductible. And, because FCTV is local, your donation remains here, in our community, allowing us to provide you with the best services, equipment and local programming possible. In these trying economic times, you can rest assured that all donations will be used responsibly and with a great deal of consideration. All donors will receive recognition in our monthly newsletter, Annual Report and Honor Roll of Members, Supporters and Underwriters (cablecast three times a day, seven days a week on FCTV-13). To those of you who have donated to FCTV in the past, thank you for your generosity. We hope you will continue to support us this year. If you have never contributed to FCTV, now is the time, please make a donation today! Credit card donations are accepted online at our website: www.fctv.org, or you can mail your donation to: FCTV, 310A Dillingham Ave., Falmouth, MA 02540. Watch for our big Annual Appeal mailing this month!

B etty is originally from Connecticut and now lives in Bourne. Although she has had exciting jobs in

Boston, she claims that the best job she’s ever had has been raising her son, who is currently a college freshman. Now an “empty nester” Betty enjoys food, wine, oldies (her favorite concert was Elton John/Billy Joel), golf, tennis, and reading. She likes to spend time with friends when she can, which can’t be much these days as we are keeping her really busy here at FCTV! Welcome Betty!

P resident Obama arrived at Otis Air National Guard Base in Air Force One for his August vacation at Martha’s Vineyard. Three FCTV members, Kevin

Lynch, Simon Craythorne, and Rob Cadwallader had an up close and personal look at Air Force One and Marine One. Kevin and Simon are members of Civil Air Patrol, Cape Cod Composite Squadron, at Otis ANGB. Rob was the official photographer. Air Force One and Marine One support personnel gave the Civil Air Patrol cadets and senior members interesting information about the aircraft and the mission of the Presidential flight detachment. For security reasons no one was allowed to enter either aircraft.

OCTOBER AT MASER GALLERY

“I paint because I am compelled to paint and not for any reason. I don’t paint with a narrative, to make a political statement, or represent something perceived to be real. I don’t paint for the marketplace, for fame and fortune, or to please some individual who needs to be impressed. All those endeavors are just painting symbols of one form or another. I paint only to make visual sense of the world as I see it. I know that a painting makes visual sense if and when it looks right to me. I know it’s good when I come back to it in a couple of weeks and ask myself, ‘Who painted that? Could not have been me!’ Those are the paintings I can look at for a long time.” - Murro Van Meter
