Wednesday 03 September 2014 - Term 3 Week 8 Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6 There has been much written of recent about our parenting of our children, their attendance at school and their resilience. Dr Michael Carr-Gregg, a renowned Australian psychologist was reported as saying that he believed “today’s parents have a lot to answer for, and there may be consequences for Australia”. He further made the comment that we are raising a generation of spoilt brats by not setting boundaries. Dr Carr-Gregg attributes the rise of poorly-behaved children to some major parenting problems: too many parents being doormats for their kids - they have got what he called a vitamin N deficiency, which is a failure to say no; parents not setting limits and boundaries; the helicopter parent - where the parents constantly hover around their children, over protecting their children and failing to instil them with a sense of independence and a can-do attitude; the high-strung, control-freak parents that want to smother their kids with so much love and attention and monitoring and supervision that they never, ever develop any self-reliance (resilience) and can't solve their own problems later on. As a Christian community we desire to raise our children to be resilient and able to deal with situations (good and bad) that arise, to honour God and serve Him in all of life. Another article suggested the Six Best Practices to be: 1. Be a Parent, not a Friend. Unlike friends, parents have to give tough love, provide boundaries and equip kids to face the world outside of the home. There will be lots of laughter and tears on this kind of journey. 2. Teach the value of money. Don’t provide everything for your children. Make them earn it and they will appreciate it more. 3. Everything our kids do is not amazing! If we praise everything our kids do, even poor or mediocre performance, how will they gain perspective or achieve excellence? Encour- age them to do their best, show them how to get better and encourage practice. Don’t sugar-coat mediocre/poor efforts. 4. Don’t keep our kids in an ivory tower. Use discretion as to the right age for this, but talk to your kids about the real world. Treating kids like responsible members of the family will prepare them to better handle the challenges of being adults in society. 5. Teach selfless giving at a young age. Want your kids to appreciate what they have in life? Get them involved in non-profit volunteering and community service as soon as they are able. Plant a lesson about the blessings received by giving selflessly to others. 6. Be a family of faith. We need to be strong role models for our children. We have a responsibility to teach our kids to love Christ and serve God in all of life. They will be most likely to do these things if Mum and Dad set the right example. Equipping our kids with a strong faith will exponentially increase their ability to deal with adversity in the future when they know they are not alone and Christ is always with them. Looking for a teaching moment? Share with children the powerful example of God allowing Christ to die on the Cross for us. He didn’t intervene to spare His only son the Crucifixion so that we might have eternal life.

It's back to the old days in Year 6 as the class engages in a mapping

activity of Northern Australia as part of their work on the Stolen

Generation in the current Federation unit.

Using tracing paper the class

learnt how "we did it in the old

days" and had lots of fun in doing

so. The class also listened to

testimonies by members of the

Stolen Generation from a dedicated

website. The information was very

moving and our discussion focused

how we can respond in love as

Christian people.

CONGRATULATIONS!! Congratulations to the following Students who are

being awarded with Secondary Awards. Each student has

accumulated 10 merit points and handed it in to Mrs

Gillett for processing.

I am hoping to see more and more each month!
