Dear Friends, I am pleased and honoured to welcome everyone, both personally and on behalf of the Federal Council of the Italian Sport Fishing, Underwater Activities and Finswimming Federation, to this major sporting event.

The 55th Boat Angling Individual Senior World Championship and the 19th Boat Angling Individual U21 World Championship, hosted by Italy on the western coast of Salento, against the wonderful backdrop of the Ionian Sea, are of particular relevance. This is the first world championship of this sea angling discipline to be staged off the coasts of Gallipoli, a town known as the pearl of the Ionian.

The sporting event is also another good opportunity to promote Apulia to an international audience. This region is already very well-known in Italy, and that seeks to enhance its tourist-friendly image by virtue of its immeasurable naturalistic, landscape and cultural heritage.

FIPS-Mer looked at traditions, sporting history, organisational capacities and of course level of enthusiasm when choosing Italy to host this world championship, to be staged from 21 to 28 September 2019, in which the world’s best anglers will be competing.

Special thanks go to the Mayor, Mr Stefano Minerva and to the local administration, the Harbourmaster’s and Coast Guard Office of Gallipoli and its Commander C.F. Pasquale Mazza for their kind help in preparing the event, and to the people of Gallipoli for their great hospitality offered to the members of all Italian and foreign teams.

So there is more than one reason for visitors and athletes to come to Gallipoli, with the best of intentions and desirous to honour one’s country in the best possible way.

My congratulations to the ASD Over Fishing Salento Organising Committee, the FIPSAS Puglia Regional Committee and the FIPSAS Lecce Provincial Section for the work performed. And, in the name of the Federation, I wish the best of luck to all Competition Officials, Accompanying persons and Anglers taking part, the real protagonists of what is bound to be a spectacular event.

Agreeing to host a competition of global relevance like this one is not just a challenge for us, it is rather a great opportunity. Gallipoli is delighted to be able to host an event that is in keeping with the culture of Gallipoli.

Numerous families in the town and many Gallipoli residents have close connections with this activity, being born close to the sea and practising sea angling with great enthusiasm.

It is a great pleasure for me to be able to return to Apulia, after many years, for these prestigious Boat Angling World Championships for Senior and U21 anglers.

As President of the Surface Fishing Sector, a post I have held since 2016, I have pledged to relaunch competitive sport fishing all over Italy, including its islands. It is a programme I have been attempting to implement with enthusiasm. As regards sea angling, this activity is widely practised in the south of Italy. FIPSAS national championships covering many fishing specialities are staged in Apulia every year. The time has come to encourage the south of the country to stage international events, including events for youngsters, seeing that they love the south and are very pleased to come here.

FIPS-Mer is supporting my project, and has accepted by proposals with relish. I am sure that all the many Anglers hailing from all nations will be happy to spend this week in beautiful Gallipoli, marrying sport with a curiosity to get to know the local culture and territory. They will not be disappointed by the typical southern hospitality.

I wish to thank FIPSAS and local authorities that have believed in us and supported this initiative. The seas of southern Italy will give us many more opportunities to host prestigious sporting events in Italy in the future.

Organising a Sport Fishing World Championship is a great privilege for any FIPSAS Sports Association.

In the name of myself and all our members, I wish to thank FIPSAS and FIPS-Mer for granting us this honour, Circolo della Vela di Gallipoli for the logistical support it will offer and the Municipality of Gallipoli for the efforts it will make to allow us to enjoy some unforgettable moments.

We will do all in our power to ensure that all delegations enjoy a more than pleasant stay. This is why we have prepared a tourist, cultural and food and wine itinerary that I hope will satisfy all of our Friends staying in marvellous Salento.

Obviously the competition is the key event, and I am certain that the Over Fishing Salento team, working for Anglers and Captains, will continue to work as well as it has done over 35 years of national and international activity.

This important event will also see us engaged socially: all catches will be given away, helping to raise a smile for the families and disabled children being helped by the Cuore Amico Association.

It is very much my hope that all participants - Anglers, Captains, Officials and Accompanying persons – will take with them an excellent memory of the days spent in Salento after this important event comes to an end. There could be no better legacy...

Tourist information

Gallipoli means Città Bella, beautiful city: a seaside town floating like a mirage on the Ionian coast, about 40 km from Lecce. The old part, perched on an island of limestone origin, is connected to the mainland and the new town by a 20th century arched bridge, and more recently by another bridge providing access to the port. The walls, ramparts and towers, which once protected the town from invasion, now shelters it against storm tides, retaining the fascination of days gone by. Before reaching the old part and its paved streets, affording frequent sea views, you should slow down and take a look at the fish market, located in the original moat area of the majestic castle, where locals go to seek out the day’s fresh catch. The Angevine fortress, which is almost totally surrounded by the sea, has recently been renovated. It can be accessed from the old part of the town, and gives visitors the chance to go back in time, with its towers, tunnels, corridors and regal rooms. The old part appears to start from the Greek fountain, a monument that is actually from the Renaissance age, with a Baroque pediment. Behind it, among the fishing boats bobbing up and down on the water, are the Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Canneto and Chapel of Santa Cristina, protector of the town and the favourite saint of seafarers.
