Welcome to Gardens in the Vineyards — an exclusive, guided presentation of four stunning gardens in the Napa Valley in celebration of the 25th Anniversary of Music in the Vineyards. We are delighted to share an insider’s view of some of our region’s most exquisite gardens when plants will be at their peak thanks to the bountiful rain and spring sunshine. Music in the Vineyards has been part of the Napa community since 1995, and by attending today’s tour you are supporting our intimate chamber music series and our expanded outreach program.

In 2018 we launched our String Quartet Apprenticeship Program, a three-week, full-scholarship residential program designed to identify and nurture an emerging ensemble and to further Music in the Vineyards’ commitment to community engagement. This year’s winner, selected by nation-wide competitive video audition, is Indiana University based Second Street Quartet. The quartet will undergo a week of intensive coaching and collaboration with Music in the Vineyards festival artists leading to a full schedule of live, interactive, free performances in retirement communities, Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs, NVYSO Music Camp, and unconventional venues such as movie theaters, art galleries and wine bars.

Our aim of increasing accessibility to live chamber music in the valley cannot be achieved without the support of our loyal patrons and generous donors. This evening’s event will feature a Fund A Need where you will have the opportunity to support this summer’s outreach program featuring the Second Street Quartet. Thank you in advance for your generous support and we look forward to celebrating with you during our 25th Anniversary season this summer!

Traditional English-Style & Edible GardenGarden Owners: Carolyn & Alex Mehran, Walnut Drive, OakvilleLandscape Architects: Robert Royston, Roger Warner

‘Nonesuch Place’ as we affectionately call our home, is our favorite place to relax on weekends. The garden has been created over many years and by many hands. When the property was first acquired, commercial landscape designer Robert Royston was brought in to create the “bones” of the seven acres. Some of his legacy work includes many of the boxwood, laurel, privet hedges, and trees around the property. In 2000, we partnered with local landscape designer Roger Warner to develop the garden into what it is today, including an English-style border around the golf hole, hosting Carolyn’s favorite yellow, white, and apricot-colored roses. We recently re-engaged with Roger for new plantings around the garden. Aside from these professional projects, I have been an amateur gardener on my own selecting plants I love and beautifying new areas with roses, peonies, clematis, camellias, fruit trees, and my true passion — the vegetable garden. I enjoy living, using and photographing the bounty that I grow in my garden. I have been known to personally can over 350 jars of jam from fruit trees during the summer months. Our home and garden are not ‘perfect’ but it’s our sanctuary, and it brings us great joy.

Villa Insteda — A Bountiful Rose Garden at its PeakGarden Owner: Chotsie Blank, Conn Creek Road, RutherfordLandscape Architects & Designer: Thomas Church, Roger Warner, Chotsie Blank

Chotsie’s garden is built around a lovely Victorian home. The spectacular trees on the property that provide the bones for the gardens were planted by Thomas Church long before the Blanks bought the property over thirty years ago. Chotsie’s notable rose garden was completely redesigned in 2010. It is a raised garden, quite dramatic and architectural, with twenty-four pale green metal pillars covered with climbers and flowering vines on cables which go from pillar to pillar, creating garlands of roses. Very fragrant Cressida and Polka roses are among her favorites that bloom in May. The garden features a large square fountain and a living room, where Chotsie loves to read and have a glass of wine with friends. Hornbeams at the entrance by a reflecting pond are carried through on the sides. Along with designing the pillars, her late husband, Allan, installed a subtle wall of four polished mirrored stainless panels that reflect the garden. Other large metal sculptures created by Allan are also sited on the property. A thriving herb garden, fruit trees, and a boutique vineyard yield delights for family and friends.

The Kelly Garden Garden Owner: Diane Chapman, Zinfandel Lane, St. HelenaLandscape Architect: Roger Warner

Of all the people I have had the good fortune to have known, Matthew Kelly was the most dynamic and stylish man-about-town I ever met. He maintained an international circle of friends which included royalty and the highest in the land. His wife, Diane, is a high priestess of interior design and a member of San Francisco's social elite. Their St. Helena refuge was referred to as the Bungalow, a hidden retreat where Matthew and Diane entertained Kirk Douglas, Lord Hescott, and the crème de la crème. The design of the garden was a collaboration between Diane and me, although I wonder if I wasn't channeling the French and English kings of my ancestry. Probably not, as it was Diane's experience and design genius that carried the day. The garden might be called an essay in green, a California salute to the formality of a European garden under blazing blue skies. As one leaves the parlor and enters the loggia, an unexpected vista presents itself, belying the true size of the garden. Clipped privet hedges, great masses of Iceberg roses, boxwood, and bouquets of white impatiens greet new arrivals before they settle down to enjoy Diane’s wit, humor, and hospitality.

A Succulent OasisGarden Owners: Walter Nirenberg & Dory Culver, Adams Street, St. HelenaLandscape Architect: Jonathan Plant

This small urban garden was created on an historical lot that was reconstituted with the original parcel. The challenge was to use the remnants of an old orchard, solve a drainage issue, and create a drought tolerant and inviting stroll garden. This plant enthusiast’s garden was inspired by Ruth Bancroft’s succulent garden in Walnut Creek, California. Her Garden Conservancy garden was based on the concept of plants defining the spaces rather than the circulation defining the garden. The careful use of scale, proportion and focused views are essential elements of this garden.

—Jonathan Plant
