COLOSSEUMLocation: Rome, Italy Built in 70 Function: amphitheater (wheresports and events took place) Materials: stone and concrete bricks Designed by Roman EmperorsVespasian and Titus It was once the largest, free-standing amphitheater. At the time,most amphitheaters were built intohills. It held up to 80,000 peopleand is actually still used today forspecial events.

HAGIA SOPHIALocation: Istanbul, Turkey Built in 537 Function: museum, but originally achurch Materials: marble and brick Architects: Anthemios of Trallesand Isidore of Miletus It was the world's largest church fornearly a thousand years! The domedesign has influenced many otherarchitects for hundreds of years.

Location: Pisa, Italy Built between 1173-1399 Function: bell tower Materials: marble and stone Designed by Bonanno Pisano The tower is built in the medieval style. It leansbecause it is sinking into the ground! Every yearits height gets shorter as it sinks a little bit more.

LEANING TOWEROF PISA

Location: London, England Built between 1843 and 1859 Function: clock Materials: iron, stone and granite Architects: Augustus Pugin and Charles Barry Big Ben is the nickname for the tower and clock andbell that make up the clock. The clock chimes at 15,30 and 45 minutes past the hour. It gives a big belltoll on the hour. The clock uses its original mechanicaldesign, though it is currently under repair and will besilent until 2021.

Location: Bavaria, Germany Built between 1869-1886 Function: palace Material: brick and stone Architect: Eduard Riedel It is nicknamed the Fairytale Castle and is oneof the most popular castles in Europe. Themedieval look of the castle inspired WaltDisney to create the Magic Kingdom.

NEUSCHWANSTEIN CASTLE

Location: Barcelona, Spain Construction began in 1882, should be complete in2026 Function: basilica (type of church) Materials: stone and concrete Architects: Francisco de Paula del Villar and Antoni Gaudí The Gothic building is famously known for not beingcomplete. It is a huge project because its unique designand plans. It has been named a World Heritage Site.

LA SAGRADAFAMÍLIA

Location: Paris, France Built between 1887-1889 Function: observation tower Material: iron Architect: Stephen Sauvestre The tower was built to be a modern attraction for thecity for the Exposition Universelle of 1889. It is namedafter the engineer Gustave Eiffel, whose companybuilt the tower. It remains the tallest building in Parisand is open for visitors to go up to the top.

EIFFEL TOWER

Location: Brussels, Belgium Built in 1958 Function: museum Material: stainless steel Architects: André and Jean Polak The landmark was built to show theworld's growing support of science.It has nine spheres, or atoms,connected by tubes to form thecell of an iron crystal under highmagnification. Whoa!

ATOMIUM

Location: Prague, Czech Republic Built in 1994 Function: hotel Material: stone and glass Architects: Vlado Milunić and Frank Gehry The building is actually made of two parts, onecurved building and one still building. Its design wasone-of-a-kind and many neighbors did not like it atfirst because it was too different. Now, it is wellknown for its unique design and subtle politicalstatement.
