Having just received an energy bill that I am convinced is actually larger than the national debt of a fair number of Central African countries, I am extremely glad that I made the switch to low energy lighting at home as soon as I did. However, as hard as I try to convince myself that I’m saving money and the planet, I still find it hard to perform basic tasks at night.

When we made the big change to LED lighting a couple of years ago, the kitchen seemed to fare particularly badly, turning from a brightly lit haven of efficiency to a gloomy cave where potential danger lurked in every corner. Yet again this autumn, I’ve made the mistake of assuming something I couldn’t see wasn’t actually there, and yet again I’ve been reduced to a bandaged hand, extreme pain and some terrible language.

It’s almost as bad in the sitting room: the resident golfer’s ‘lust list’ includes hand-knitted headcovers with outrageously oversized pom-poms. ‘Not a problem’, I told him, ‘leave it to me and I’ll whip you up a set during the evenings’. Which I would - if I could only see what I’m doing.

Having knitted for England every evening last week, I was faced at the weekend with the sad reality of dropped stitches, miscounted rows, and a pathetic pom-pom that would be an embarrassment on a teddy bear’s hat. Perhaps a head torch is the answer …

For a truly energy efficient light, maybe I should look no further than Alfredo Moser’s brilliant idea. Back in 2002, the Brazilian mechanic was suffering, along with the rest of his countryfolk, from local strikes, which were blacking out entire areas for hours and hours at a time. To counter the lack of light, he decided to harness sunlight, and set about fitting rows of two-litre plastic bottles into the roof of his home, which he then sealed with polyester resin to deter leaks. Filled with water (and a couple of capfuls of bleach to discourage algae growth), simple refraction does the rest. Depending on the sun’s strength, the ‘lamps’ create between 40-60W each, which kept him and Mrs Moser very happy through the long dark evenings.

The neighbours soon got wind of the great idea, and before he knew it, Moser was receiving requests to create a similar ‘green’ lighting scheme for them too. He even installed them at his place of work!

Although it’s never going to make him rich, Moser’s brilliant idea has earned him a few dollars along the way, but importantly, at least 15 other countries have taken the idea and run with it. It’s been adopted by the charity, MyShelter, which is using Moser lamps in 140,000 homes in the Philippines, where electricity costs are unusually prohibitive.

I wonder if it’s an idea we could employ during the upcoming festive season...

COAST TO COAST FOR CANCER

Advance International, a lighting company based in Melbourne, Derbyshire has raised more than £7,000 in its latest fundraiser for Breakthrough Breast Cancer.

A team of employees and clients cycled 140 miles in three days across northern England’s rugged landscape from Workington, Cumbria to Tynemouth, Tyne and Wear. The team had to contend with torrential rain, the Pennines and a variety of equipment issues, making it a personal challenge as much as a fundraiser.

Throughout the year, Advance has supported the charity by hosting a ball, taking part in the London marathon, and most recently, the Coast to Coast ride, all to raise funds for Breakthrough. The addition of funds from Coast to Coast has helped Advance raise a total of £30,000 for Breakthrough in 2013.

Simon Deacon, managing director at Advance said: ‘The commitment the team has shown has been outstanding. Coast to Coast was a big challenge, but the camaraderie shows what a fantastic team we have at Advance and amongst our clients. I would like to personally thank everyone for their generosity.’

Protecting design rights, lecturing, product development – all in a day’s work for this month’s interviewee

You get the feeling that ‘if a job’s worth doing’ could be Guy Harding’s mantra. He’s a man who willingly shares his time to helping the next generation of the lighting community, is dedicated to preserving design rights, works developing new products – and still finds time to relax with his favourite hobby.Harding – or to give him his full title, EurIng Guy Harding BSc (Hons), C.Eng, FILP - is the lighting development manager at Woodhouse. He is responsible for all lighting design and product development within the company and acts as a lighting consultant within the Marshalls Group.

Since graduating in 1985 from Brunel University, Harding has spent 22 years within the lighting industry, heading up new product development for a multi-national lighting company, and also designing lighting and motorway communications along the way.

Where did your interest in lighting stem from – and is it the design or the technical side that you prefer?

My interest really developed as my responsibility grew at Urbis. I was initially employed as an applications engineer, doing lighting calculations; this was really number crunching for road lighting designs. When I started doing product development for Urbis and got involved in the design and manufacturing side, then my interest grew.

I am a ‘hands on’ engineer and need to know how things work or are made. Looking for improvements or new technologies is really interesting and seeing a finished product gives me great job satisfaction.

And where did you learn your trade?

My Design Technology O and A Levels taught me a lot about the design side, and I picked up basic engineering skills from a Saturday job at a local clock shop. I was repairing and making new components for clocks as well as making

complete mechanisms for grandfather clocks. It involved machining components to fine tolerances and polishing them to an almost mirror-like finish.

What led you to Woodhouse?

I was approached by Woodhouse after my time as an expert witness in a design rights case involving Woodhouse and Urbis. I was employed in a technical role to strengthen the design team and manage some high profile projects.

Can you tell us a little about the company and its work?

Woodhouse designs, manufactures and installs external lighting, street furniture and signage. The company is well known for its bespoke design and manufacture of iconic lighting solutions, such as the lighting columns in Exhibition Road, and Southend-on-Sea’s giant LED illumination columns.

You’re a lecturer on the ILP Exterior Lighting Diploma: can you tell us what that means to you, how you became involved, and the benefits of it?

I was invited to start lecturing to students on the Diploma back in 1995, and have taken on more lectures over the years. I now also mark some of the projects and set up the procedure to allow successful candidates to gain registration with the Engineering Council as EngTech. It gives me great satisfaction to be involved in training new professionals in the lighting field, and help them gain professional registration.

companies for professional development.I am also really please to see my alumni, Brunel University, tailoring its Product and Industrial Design degree to lighting design. This is a real step forward for the industry, and will help to raise the profile of lighting designers.

That sounds extremely positive – and is hopefully something other universities are taking on too. So, you inspire the students, but who or what inspires you?

Good design is far and away the most important thing for me. However, form is nothing without function. Products must work well and be easy to maintain and then, if they can be made to look good, so much the better.

And what about your work with design rights? There has been much written about protection of copyright, but is it really possible, and if so, how well are we coping with the rising trend for instant cheap copies of designs?

Having worked as an expert witness in a design rights case, I have seen this from the sharp end. Intellectual property needs to be defended, but it is an expensive business to do so. Genuine new ideas are few and far between, and if someone has a breakthrough idea, it is their property. We cannot encourage innovation if the designers will not get the benefit from it.

Unfortunately there is always someone out there who can make it cheaper than you, and cheap imports will always be a problem. The market does need better regulation, but I do think we are becoming more aware of cheap copies. I am a great believer in the old adage, ‘you get what you pay for’. Good design and quality will always shine through.

Looking ahead, the LED – saviour of the 21st century or still a long way to go? Why?

LEDs have certainly revolutionised the lighting industry, but we are only really just starting to understand the possibilities they give us. Many existing products were re-engineered to take them, with varying degrees of success. They are so

It gives me great satisfaction to be involved in training new professionals in the lighting field, and help them gain professional registration

As you work with students on the ILP course, you’re well placed to see the raw talent coming through. What is your feeling on the UK’s current crop of young lighting design students? Do they get support from their employers to allow them to become qualified? What more do you feel could be done for them?

I can only answer this from the technical designer side of things. I am involved in lecturing on the ILP Exterior Lighting Diploma, and we are seeing a constant demand for the qualification from the industry.

Most students coming on to the course are new to lighting, having transferred from other disciplines or are from local authorities. The majority of students are funded through the course by their companies, and now that successful completion of the course leads to Engineering Council registration as EngTech for the student, there is a real incentive for both students and

fundamentally different to a lamp that a completely different approach is needed. I believe we have only just started to see products that really maximise their potential.

So still plenty of mileage to come from LEDs then. What other innovations in the world of lighting excite you?

Seeing the fundamental research going into light sources: OLEDS look promising, but they are only at an early stage of development. For display backlighting and ambient lighting, they will certainly have a place.

And in the meantime, what do you feel is the next important development in lighting technology?

For me, this has to be standardisation of LED modules between manufacturers and adopting long-term standards. These should allow advances in technology to improve life and lumen output, but within the same package. Product design takes many months - or even years. By the time a luminaire is ready to launch, the LED module or board may well be out of date, and the manufacturer is looking to sell you something new.

Manufacturers and designers need the confidence to invest in products. LED technology is racing ahead and product design is struggling to keep pace.

Yes, that’s a comment we’ve heard before – and with the time and costs involved in R&D, it could be catastrophic.

In your opinion – and you can only choose one - what’s the best light source currently available?

This has to be LEDs. Probably the larger chip versions from Cree. I personally prefer cool white to warm; it gives the scene a crisp, modern look.

What’s a typical day at the office?

No two days are the same for me at the moment! I spend a lot of time acting as an advisor for projects - either specifying LEDs and control systems, checking wiring arrangements, or advising on production going through our factory.

I can then spend time on anything from LED research and looking at new design integration through to writing knowledge blogs for our website or developing our long-term lighting strategy.

And what are you currently working on?

We have just won a large order for the Middle East, involving lighting masts with 28 recessed LED luminaires. I am working with one of our partner

Manufacturers and designers need the confidence to invest in products. LED technology is racing ahead and product design is struggling to keep pace

companies, looking at the integration of the fittings into the mast, wiring arrangements and ensuring all components can be easily accessed, installed and maintained on site.

What do you do to relax and get away from the stresses of work?

I’m a model engineer and I like to spend time in my home workshop, making large-scale railway rolling stock. Although it’s still engineering, it is very relaxing just to look at how the Victorians designed mechanisms, and then reproduce them in miniature. To actually machine components and fit them together so that they work gives me a great sense of achievement.

If you had to change career now, what would you like to do?

I would develop my models engineering hobby into a small business. I have been asked many times to build rolling stock for others: it’s quite a niche market, but the items are high value, and it would be a real challenge building the business up.

I am very creative and like to see projects coming together. I am great believer in getting things right first time. I really hate to see sloppy or careless work. If something is worth making, then it’s worth doing to the best of your abilities.

Audition hopefulsLighting designer, Tom Sutherland - one of the UK’s emerging talents - utilised 60 Robe LEDBeam 100s to great effect on the 2013 X-Factor auditions, staged at London’s Wembley Arena.Around 250 hopefuls gave it their all in front of the judges, using Sutherland’s lighting rig, which was based on several curved trusses at different levels. The concept was to create one very dynamic lighting look, which had to appear different but complimentary from multiple camera angles.

It was the first time he’d used Robe’s LEDBeam 100s on this scale and also the first time in an arena... for which they were absolutely fundamental to the aesthetics. ‘I specifically used them to accentuate and amplify the apparent size of the rig,’ explained Sutherland. The clever piece of visual trickery worked a treat. He chose LEDBeams because he wanted a fixture with a strong and powerful beam but that would also not be too dominant – the miniscule size of the LEDWash provided the ultimate solution. ‘It was vital for the beams to look fluffy rather than harsh,’ he explained, ‘and they were perfect.’

FINGERS CROSSEDPhotonStar has achieved an Award Nominee status in the Energy category of the 2013 World Technology Awards.

Part of the annual World Technology Summit, the awards aim to celebrate those individuals and organisations doing the innovative work of the greatest likely long-term significance in their respective fields.

The international awards will take place at the Time & Life Building in the centre of New York on November 15, following the two-day summit held by the World Technology Network.

FRIENDS ACROSS THE PONDIllinois-based Thomas Research Products (TRP) has joined forces to offer custom LED light engine design through a partnership with Norlux, which specialises in engineering custom LED light engines and complementary products.

Norlux’ engineers have more than a century of combined experience in specific disciplines, that include electrical design and PCB layout, mechanical design, optical design, and thermal design.

TRP is known as a leading provider of standard LED drivers, and this partnership allows the company to offer its OEM customers comprehensive custom light engine design and development services, by referring them to Norlux. The arrangement provides Norlux access to TRP’s broad product line and lighting industry knowledge. Customers will benefit from having access to the combined resources of these two companies for both standard and custom LED products.

According to the Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency, Tukes, LED tubes may be used as a direct replacement for fluorescent tubes in original luminaires or in modified luminaires.

‘The memo and EU recommendation state that the replacement of the starter and tube does not constitute a modification of the luminaire itself,’ says Valtavalo CEO, Markku Laatikainen.

‘We welcome the memo, as it clarifies the terminology and practices in the industry, which has occasionally disseminated conflicting information about the use of LED tubes.’

The recommendation states that if a luminaire, which uses an electronic ballast, is modified (conversion kit installation) and the ballast is bypassed, there is no need for CE-

marking and testing if the luminaire is not resold and is still safe to use.

‘Apart from luminaire modification, these recommendations do not contain any significant changes, but they do clarify things and make it easier for our customers to believe that LED tubes can and should be used,’ Laatikainen said.

Additionally, the company has been nominated for

an international Cleantech business competition. In November, ten winners will be selected from 160 nominees in ten categories, and announced at the Corporate Cleantech Venture Day in Lahti, Finland.

Valtavalo was nominated for its fully automated production line, the excellent luminous efficacy of its LED tubes and its functional business model.

esigning a lighting scheme for a holy site - whether a Norman chapel in East Anglia, a synagogue in the London suburbs, or a European World

Heritage site – can be a real minefield for the poor old LD.

Recognising the potential trip hazards, The Society of Light and Lighting (SLL) has been working on a new guide for just this situation – LG13: Places of Worship. It’s a first for the SLL on this particular subject, and by the sound of it, could be a first for the lighting industry as a whole.

Author of the guide and lighting applications manager at Hilclare, David Holmes, CEng MCIBSE MSLL FInstSMM explained: ‘From research of my own, there is very little published work on the subject. Indeed, whilst there are private documents written by members of certain religious faiths, I cannot find anything, which covers the majority of modern places of worship in one single work. That is not just within the UK but also Europe, Asia and America. Therefore, the SLL is hoping that this guide will become a standard work on the subject and be very popular on its release.’

With more than 30 years’ experience in the industry, Holmes is well qualified to undertake the task single-handedly, which could have proved daunting to a lesser mortal.

Divine inspiration

‘I feel that, by working alone, I have managed to achieve the objectives and create a guide, which is easy to read within its entirety for anyone, whether they are lighting designers, architects, facilities managers, students or indeed the general public,’ he agreed.

Within the guide there are, apart from the technical sections, subjects such as People with Disabilities, Listed Buildings, Use of Daylight and Energy Efficiency.

Holmes explained further: ‘Within each chapter on the particular religion or type of building, there are notes giving a brief history on beliefs and practices, so the reader can gain an understanding of the detailed use of the building.

‘This should hopefully enable the lighting designer to have empathy to create a suitable environment within the building in question,’

KEEPING COSTS DOWN Religious buildings aren’t immune from spiraling energy prices, and from the tiniest chapel to some of the largest cathedrals, many are turning to the

ubiquitous LED in order to help reduce their costs, especially when, as in the case of

Cologne and Hereford, they are also used to stage special events.

The grounds of Hereford Cathedral have been

transformed with a range of low energy, low

maintenance LED fixtures from Philips,

as part of a new lighting scheme, which has helped turn Hereford Cathedral into a stunning visual spectacle. Lighting the façade and grounds was the culmination of a three-year regeneration project after more than a century of heavy use.

When embarking on the project, which had to meet strict conservation criteria being partly funded by the Heritage Lottery, the Cathedral’s Chapter was keen to improve the exterior lighting for visitors as well as reducing energy consumption and maintenance costs.

The previous exterior lighting was a combination of metal halide and high pressure sodium sources, ranging in wattage from 250W to 400W, used to illuminate the public thoroughfare that runs through the grounds, as well as lighting the facades of the cathedral from the buttresses upwards.

The improvements make Hereford Cathedral a real feature of the skyline. Precentor, The Reverend Canon Andrew Piper commented: ‘As twilight fades into darkness at the end of each day, everyone’s appreciation of the mediaeval architecture is enhanced, and the use of the latest LED technology has significantly reduced the Cathedral’s carbon footprint.

All of the LED facade lighting has been equipped with controllable white LED, so Cathedral staff have the ability to change the colour temperature of each unit, and to ensure cost savings are met, it’s controlled by a timer, which switches the lighting off at midnight.

The scheme is stimulating the development of tourism, business and culture, according Dominic Harbour, commercial development manager of Hereford Cathedral. ‘Visitors to Hereford and the newly refurbished Cathedral Close love the new lighting scheme. Tourist visitors who stay locally are surprised to see the cathedral so well lit in the evenings, making a bee-line for the Close as a perfect location for a summer evening stroll. We also receive more requests from local groups and organisations wanting to use the new space.’

SPECIAL EVENTS Lighting any type of religious building for a special occasion means a very close eye to detail is required, so when Cologne Cathedral hosted Lux Eucharistica, an amazing dynamic audio visual show for the Cathedral’s Eucharistic Congress 2013, the management called on

To make sure the proposal fit the bill, Philips organised night trials so that members of the Cathedral’s Fabric Commission for England could experience the elements that was being proposed. Predominant in the scheme are Philips iW Graze Powercore and iW Blast Powercore LED fixtures, with an average wattage of 50W per fixture, which has significantly reduced the installed electrical load. For most of the building, in-ground Graze fittings are used to light lower levels, with Blast fixtures lighting upper levels.

The purpose of the façade lighting is to model the Cathedral’s architectural features, rather than flatten their appearance with an excess of light. This has been achieved by siting the fittings close to the facades, providing subtle uplighting and wall washes. The circular window at the west end of the building is highlighted from inside using Philips MasterLED spot lamps.

illumination art specialists, Friedrich Förster and Sabine Weissinger of Casa Magica in Tuebingen for help. They, in turn, enlisted ETC Ion control desk expert, Matthias Strobel to help program the spectacular projections and colourful lighting.

‘Controlling the Selador Classic Vivid-R fixtures and projection using Ion was the easy bit,’ said Strobel. ‘The more challenging part was taking control of the Cathedral’s very complex house light system, with 1000+ channels via the Artnet protocol! The fact that we could organise it all using the new Magic Sheets function, which comes with the latest Eos family software update, made things really simple.’

Selador LED fixtures were used, together with large-scale scrolling projections from Pani projectors, in order to artistically express the topic of the congress. The aim was to inspire and awe the 45,000 people attending the event.Organised by the German Bishops’ Conference and hosted by the Archdiocese of Cologne, the five-day event included services inside and outside churches in central Cologne, concluding with a Casa Magica light and sound show in the Cathedral.

When it comes to putting on a show, churches in the US are hard to beat. One of the oldest in Florida, the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Jacksonville, recently underwent a lighting upgrade - its first in three decades. 20 Chauvet Professional Ovation E-190WW ellipsoidal-style fixtures, COLORado 1 VW Tour and COLORado 1-Tri Tour PAR wash lights now

comprise the church’s permanent inventory, and are used for services and special events.

Completed in 1910, the church is built in a late Gothic revival style, featuring a cruciform floor plan, pointed arches, tracery on the windows, buttresses and pinnacles, high spires, and an interior high vault, features that have all been enhanced with the addition of the LED fixtures.

‘The church wanted to change the altar and stage lighting to LED,’ explained Ronnie Polowy of installer, Trinity AVL. ‘Some of the lights were placed in very difficult places to reach, and bulbs hadn’t been changed since the last time they painted, some 30 years ago.’

Two Ovation fixtures light the centre cupola, 50ft above the altar. ‘The cupola features a beautiful gold leaf pattern, enhanced now by the E-190WW—my favorite fixture of the

church’s gear,’ Polowy added. ‘The cupola had not been lit in more than 30 years because of the difficulty in getting to the old flood lamps. We mounted the fixtures on the left and right pillars. They do a wonderful job lighting the cupola from 40ft away. We looked at different options and had some problems with the programming, but once we decided to go with the Ovation ellipsoidal fixture, it went in without a single problem. I was very pleased.’

Two COLORado 1 VW Tour wash lights illuminate the front of the altar with cool or warm white light, while six COLORado 1-Tri Tour’s light the cupola and altar: two on the either side of the cupola, and four more light the altar: one on each side and two in the centre. Ten DJ COLORband PiX linear lights have been used to wash the wall behind the altar.

To program the lights, Trinity created eight pre-sets for the controller making it simple for church staff use the bright warm white fixtures for services, and the colour pre-sets for weddings and special occasions.

BEAUTY IN THE EYE

Bespoke lighting is often required for religious buildings, where off-the-shelf solutions simply don’t work. London’s Mill Hill Synagogue recently completed new community centre to replace a pre-existing facility, which had been outgrown. The Ner Orre (Lamp of Light) Centre is a Farrow Silverton-designed project that includes a custom

made Spectral chandelier, which illuminates the dome at the heart of the main function room. The £3.2m extension is made up of a central function room seating 600, a secondary hall on the lower level, six classrooms and a youth lounge. The centre is used for community events, including fundraisers, group meetings and dinners.

In the roof above the main hall, Farrow Silverton designed a dome section with waves of wood panelling feeding into the space, forming an octagonal frame around the dome. Spectral Lighting’s Ralph Stockham became involved in the project when architect, Leon Silverton and consultant, David Smart, set about lighting the feature.

‘I was approached to see if I could offer a solution to light the domed ceiling by using a fitting that wouldn’t detract or obscure the architect’s design,’ explained Stockham. ‘Entering late in the design process meant that taking a standard product line and applying it to Mill Hill wasn’t practical. Therefore, I designed a custom fitting using our H-Profil extruded profile system.’

At the heart of the system is the characteristic H-shaped profile extrusion. At Mill Hill, staff can raise and lower the fitting for cleaning and, when required, easy access for servicing. Once the extrusion track was shaped to size at Spectral’s German factory, LED components were fitted to provide both direct and indirect lighting. These include acrylic Pergament blocks from Spectral’s range, which create a subtle downlighting effect from the 15w SLM LED modules housed in the underside of the track. On the upward-facing channel, 3W linear LED chips create a gentle uplighting effect for the dome. Drivers and heatsinks are housed discreetly within the extruded track, maintaining the clean lines of the structure.

The result is the contemporary chandelier that presides above the space at the synagogue, providing functional light without dominating the wood panelling or detracting from the dome above.

‘We originally designed a fixed chandelier to provide a maintenance-free installation, but we later decided to add a raise/lower facility to enable cleaning,’ explained Stockham. ‘The original design didn’t allow for the installation of the digital dimming wiring, and couldn’t be changed, therefore, Ralph designed a wire-free product so that everything would work correctly and offer the scene setting and energy saving features of dimmable control,’ he added.

The suspension wires that feed power to the chandelier keep the physical impact of the luminaire discreet and any additional wiring for dimming was neither possible nor wanted. ‘The raise/lower unit has only three core power connections, and for lighting control we need a minimum of five,’ explained Stockham. ‘We’ve managed to incorporate a wire-free control

system transmitter into the chandelier head; with the receiver in the wall dimmer switch, the room now has full dimming capabilities without us needing to redesign the light fitting or add additional wiring.’

A second phase of lighting has been specified for Ner Orre, and following the success of the Spectral design, a number of matching luminaires are scheduled for production. Phase two will include matching luminaires of smaller diameters for the centre, continuing the design aesthetic across the entire premises.

WHEN MORE IS MORE

Interestingly, the lighting upgrade undertaken at Florence’s beautiful Cathedral and Piazza San Giovanni has actually increased costs and energy use – but with spectacular results.

The work was carried out thanks to the initiative and support of the Florence Chamber of Commerce, which promoted a project for improving quality of life and light in the historic, artistic centre of Florence.

The project brought several challenges, which iGuzzini had to handle after a rigorous comparison of the performance of its luminaires, including increasing lighting levels to provide even lighting of the Cathedral’s huge surfaces, and improving colour rendering – all without adding, but replacing existing luminaires. To underline the magnificent facades of the Cathedral, bell

tower and baptistery, Maxiwoody floodlights were selected, while for the surrounding pedestrian areas, Delphi wall-mounted luminaires were used with energy saving lamps.

Among others, the project involved the Government Office, Florence Chamber of Commerce and City Council, Opera del Duomo and lighting designer, Illum Srl, with iGuzzini’s products selected after field tests and comparisons. In this instance the chosen solution has resulted in an increased number of fittings and interestingly, higher energy consumption; however the huge surfaces of the Cathedral are now homogeneously lit, colour rendering is good and people feel safe and happy to spend time in the Piazza.

Many businesses operate from complex sites, often across a number of buildings or sites, some of which may have been built decades ago when energy consumption was not the key issue it is today. EyeNut offers a simple solution for complex situations. It gives site managers a clear overview of energy consumption, through its sophisticated energy ‘heat mapping’, and the tools to control the lighting and the energy used.

During installation engineers can use the RFID functionality to scan in each luminaire independently, both saving time and expense at the initial stage, and also creating a totally adaptable system for flexible operation. This allows

managers to then implement a full range of energy efficiency strategies, from dimming to daylight harvesting; and from time scheduling to scene setting. These measures can be targeted in certain areas or buildings, for individual lamps or groups of luminaries, at different times of day, according to requirements and tasks and to optimise lighting output.

Offering a completely customisable lighting solution EyeNut has several functions to aid monitoring and control, including the creation of area groups, logical groups, and tools for profiling and mapping. All this control is available at the touch of a button, through the user-friendly

Graphic User Interface (GUI), which allows managers to monitor the performance of each individual luminaire, its dim status and its predictability to fail.

Estate managers then have the detailed data to inform day-to-day decisions on energy consumption and maintenance requirements, as well as the ability to plan longer-term energy reduction strategies. As EyeNut is also designed to integrate with the existing Building Management Systems it is able to collect any other relevant data, such as occupancy information, to help determine if the lighting is being used efficiently.

EyeNut is an ingenious system that can be incorporated into new builds at the design stage

or easily retrofitted into existing buildings. Its wireless technology eliminates the need for expensive and disruptive rewiring and also enables the remote monitoring and control of multi-site or multiple building lighting from a single hub.

This multi-layered data collection capability offers detailed information about each individual luminaire combined with an overall view of energy usage across the estate; giving managers a level of detailed data generation and analysis not seen before. As lighting accounts for 41% of all electricity used in commercial buildings in the UK, the control of lighting has to be an essential component in any business’s energy reduction strategy.

Light management is easy with EyeNut

Dynamic features designed to monitor and control all aspects of indoor lighting come as standard with the ingenious EyeNut; the new indoor lighting solution from market leaders Harvard Engineering. With ultimate control over monitoring and implementation of lighting strategies throughout a building or multiple buildings or sites from a single hub, EyeNut offers managers the tools to save on energy consumption, reduce CO2

emissions and create the perfect lighting for every task

HIDDENGEMTransforming one of London’s best kept secrets into an energy efficient venue for the 21st Century

luminaires combined with a versatile control system

have transformed hospitality spaces at 8 Northumberland Avenue, while reducing energy consumption and life cycle costs.

Originally built as a 500-room grand hotel between 1882 and 1887 on the site of the original Northumberland House, No 8 was requisitioned by the War Office in 1940.The building remained occupied by the Crown until 2007, when it underwent a year-long restoration.

Sustainability has been a key element of the project to restore No 8, with a strong emphasis on reducing environmental impact in every area of activity. For example, lighting energy consumption is reduced through the use of low energy light sources throughout. This includes the use of high efficiency, colour changing LED

lighting in both the Old Billiard Room in the basement and the Ballroom on the ground floor.

Both are controlled through an amBX system, accessed via an iPad, which enables customers and staff to quickly and simply vary the colour and intensity of the lighting to suit different events.

Northumberland Avenue was the first venue in Europe to use the amBX light system, and to great effect, as director, Charles Boyd explained: ‘The ability to interact with the lighting through this playful technology, combined with the delivery of the lighting system, has proved very popular with customers, and has had a very positive impact on our business.

‘Simply putting a few buttons on the wall to change scenes wouldn’t provide the same experience. Before we installed the new lighting in the Old Billiard Room, this space was very much the second choice for customers, with the Ballroom being considerably more popular. After the lighting had been installed, the Old Billiard Room became equally, if not more sort after.

‘Based on this success, we proceeded with upgrading the lighting in the Ballroom, a significant investment for a new company operating in a difficult market, but the results have been fantastic. Bookings were up by 72 per cent in the first quarter after the Ballroom lighting was commissioned and, while this is due to a range of factors, I have no doubt the lighting has made a significant contribution.’

ENERGY EFFICIENT LIGHTING

During the time the building was occupied by the MoD, many architectural features had been covered to protect them. Now uncovered and restored, lighting has been used to enhance their visual impact. To achieve this there was a great deal of collaboration between the owners and the Philips design team. ‘Rather than relying on modeling, we took samples of the proposed fittings to site so the client could get a realistic feel for the lighting,’ explained Philips’ creative director, Rowena Preiss. ‘In this way we could see exactly how the lighting would interact with the architecture, and also ensure that we were using the right light intensities. Modern LED luminaires are capable of a very high light output so it’s important not to over-specify, as over-lighting will diminish the visual impact and potentially waste energy,’ she continued.

In addition to its design input, Philips also played a project management role, using an experienced installation team to ensure the work didn’t disrupt bookings and activities, which would have resulted in loss of revenue for the owners.

At the time the Old Billiard Room was restored, the venue’s operators had wanted to use LED lighting but found the light output insufficient. ‘Because of this, we had to use floodlights, with some additional up-lighting, but the system used a lot of energy, generated a great deal of heat and had high maintenance requirements,’ Boyd recalled. ‘Then we heard about Philips’ Color Blast, and the option of using it with the amBX system, and decided this combination would be ideal.’

Color Blast 12 luminaires are wall-mounted in the Old Billiard Room, providing colour changing up- and down-lighting, and are supplemented by three-circuit, track-mounted LED spotlights

across the ceiling. This enables an almost infinite number of lighting scenes to be selected through the amBX system, so staff or customers are able to use it to change colours in specific zones or throughout the space very easily. The system can also be set to respond to music and other sounds. When AV is controlled by a third party such as a DJ, the lighting can be controlled through a lighting desk.

In addition to the Old Billiard Room, LED light sources have also been supplied for use in offices and other spaces in the basement to help reduce energy consumption.

The Ballroom has been described by English Heritage as the ‘grandest example of a Victorian ballroom in existence’ and is the highlight of the renovation. Here, the lighting builds on the principles that had proved so successful in the Old Billiard Room, and takes them a step further, making use of a wider range of LED luminaires to enhance the architectural facades. Many of these are discreetly positioned behind specially constructed concealments at high and low level.

In the entrance to the space, Philips Color Fuse luminaires have been used at low level to provide an active wash of light that brings the space to life. Color Blast fittings at the base of decorative mouldings create contrast by using a narrow beam that strikes down through the ambient wash, a pattern that

is repeated throughout the space. The ceiling profile is defined with the use of iColor Cove QLX fittings mounted in coving and at high level within the internal arches, while Color Fuse fittings mounted just below them provide a wash of light down the internal arch facades.

In the bay, Color Graze Powercore fittings have been combined with StyliD track-mounted spotlights to create a dynamic focal point with a punch of light for conferences and displays. Again, the entire Ballroom lighting system is controlled through an amBX system using an iPad.

At the heart of both the aesthetic and commercial success of this project, has been painstaking attention to detail and extensive dialogue between all parties. Mounting sample fittings in the space proved critical in achieving the desired visual effects with optimum performance and reduced life cycle costs.

The end result is a truly innovative lighting installation that allows No 8 to offer a bespoke experience to customers, which has contributed to an increase in market share in an area of London that is able to offer a very wide choice of hospitality venues.

Rather than relying on modeling, we took samples of the proposed fittings to site so the client could get a realistic feel for the lighting

n today’s economy, every penny counts. And with electricity costs rising, many companies are

realising that a lighting system upgrade is one of the most straightforward and rewarding investments that a business can make. Implementing lighting options that can drive both cost-savings and energy efficiencies – while delivering exceptional light quality – is an easy win for businesses looking to cut costs. Already, organisations across several sectors are turning to T5 luminaires as a new lighting solution for the modern environment. Indeed, the advantages of T5s are compelling:

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

T5 luminaires typically deliver equivalent light levels to those of traditional HID fittings with twice the connected load. So, one T5 luminaire can deliver the equivalent of one 400W metal halide fitting while consuming far less energy, resulting in lower wattage and lower cost.

Traditionally, metal halide has been regarded as the standard in warehouse and industrial lighting. But increasingly, forward-thinking businesses are considering alternatives. Keith Wyatt, commercial director at Premium Lighting Solutions examines the case for using T5 luminaires

ContactPremium Lighting Solutions www.premiumlighting.co.uk

INTELLIGENT CONTROLS

T5 luminaries with integral sensors mean that lights are only triggered when they’re needed – sensing movement as well as ambient light levels rather than remaining on until somebody remembers to switch them off. This kind of intelligent control simply isn’t possible with metal halides, leading to inflated costs.

LIGHT QUALITY

The colour rendering index (CRI) is a measure of the ability of light to reproduce the appearance of colour in natural daylight. A lower CRI rating affects the eye’s ability to see contrast and detail and can lead to eyestrain. Metal halides are recognised as having a CRI index between 65-70, compared to the latest T5 luminaries, which have a CRI index of 85. T5s not only deliver the correct light levels, but also significantly overcome the light quality issues inherent with most traditional HID lights - and with some newer

LED technologies. Traditional drawbacks, such as shadowing and glare from metal halides can compromise worker efficiency.

THE CASE FOR CHANGE The media, business and the public all continue to associate energy efficiency with compromise; whether that is light levels, light quality or performance. This is simply not the case.

These perceptions are partly driven by bad experiences with poor technologies; many sales organisations have sold new technologies purely on the basis of energy saving without any consideration of lux levels, shadowing, glare, colour rendering and colour temperature, end of life costs, etc. Counteracting these misguided beliefs can only be achieved by implementing a combination of better case studies and more detailed information relating to the rewards of better efficiency, and how this can be achieved.

With typical potential savings of 60-80 per cent, there is plenty of incentive for businesses to fully understand alternative lighting technologies. Only when this happens will we see energy efficient innovations fully embraced.

NOTE

prestige city centre head office is probably at one end of the spectrum when it comes to most people’s idea of the perfectly set up working environment, while perhaps an office in a small industrial unit, or even a euphemistically-termed home office - usually a spare bedroom or even a garden room - are way down at the other end.

However, when it comes to lighting, you’d be surprised at how many of the biggest and plushest offices simply aren’t set up for the task at hand. They may well have nausea-inducingly fast elevators, drink dispensers requiring a PhD, and ergonomic, lumbar supporting chairs with more adjustments and twizzly bits than a bored worker can break, but – and it’s a very big but from the point of view of the staff – is the lighting right for the variety of tasks being undertaken, and has the company considered that it could save even more hard cash by installing wellbeing-friendly lighting rather than just blindly going down the energy saving route?

After all, staff sickness in the UK alone has been reported to cost business anything from £3.4bn to £6.2bn every year, and even a small reduction in that figure would be beneficial.

Today, almost 80 per cent of activity taking place within an office involves a computer screen. We all know about taking 10-minute breaks every hour, but that’s rarely possible in a busy environment, and would probably be frowned on by employers. So what lighting should they provide for staff to ensure there’s no danger of eyestrain, headaches or worse?

The Society of Light and Lighting (SLL) has published an extremely informative guide (Lighting Guide 07: Office Lighting),

Vast office suites with banks of buzzing fluorescents marching across the ceiling are so last year – but what’s going to take their place, and how will it affect users’ health?

WHERE STAFF MATTER The prestigious One Angel Square, Manchester is the Co-operative Group’s new headquarters. The Co-op sees the striking architecture as an expression of its values and commitment to the environment: it is a statement for sustainability, supported by Luxonic Lighting, which has provided more than 11,000 luminaires for offices and communal areas in the building. The use of pioneering sustainable technology in the new building reduces carbon consumption by around 80 per cent and significantly reduces energy costs for the owner.

Luxonic LED downlighters are mounted within bespoke rafts throughout the reception

Our lighting for the open plan offices is designed to increase the wellbeing of staff, giving users optimum visual comfort

which deals in a straightforward manner with all aspects of the subject, from lighting the board room to the post room, and all areas in between. The guide gives advice on the design and operation of lighting schemes for all users of office buildings and associated areas, and has been updated to reflect changes to the European Standard for Indoor Workplaces (BS EN 12464-1).

Following an introduction, which sets the scene in terms of legislation, standards and good practice, sections cover: the design process; the design brief and information to be provided; building types; design criteria; design options for electric lighting (including direct, indirect and combined direct/indirect lighting); and design options for daylighting. An extensive final section discusses detailed room design information for primary office spaces, secondary office spaces, circulation areas and back-of-house areas.

Perhaps if more building owners were to read it, the statistics could be reduced and we’d have a happier, healthier workforce … Dr Andy Davies of Harvard Engineering believes more than a lighting upgrade should be considered when buildings are updated. ‘Lighting is responsible for approximately 33 per cent of an office’s energy consumption, meaning it provides a huge potential for energy savings,’ he said. ‘Installing LED’s and energy efficient lighting is not enough though, and controls should be added as a way to not only increase the efficiency of the lighting system, but also to tailor the lighting to the activities taking place in the office, increasing human performance and productivity.

‘The SLL recommends different lux levels depending on the use of the space and the level of concentration needed. In areas used for filing and copying, a lux level of 300 is recommended, for writing, reading and data processing, 500L is recommended, and for technical drawings and drawing boards, a lux level of 700. If the correct level of lighting is not used, eyestrain and fatigue can occur, leading to a reduction in productivity.’

DON’T CALL FOR SPARKY Rather than just call in the electrician to retrofit LED lamps across the entire office portfolio in order to make savings, switched on companies are talking to lighting experts and taking advice on what lighting works in which situation, and those are the companies which are not only making saving on their energy bills, they’re also finding additional savings from lower levels of staff sickness. It’s a win-win situation. Three forward-thinking companies on the Isle of Man have revolutionised their office lighting with help from MHA Lighting. Each has offices in St Mary’s Court, a commercial building in Douglas, owned by Catalina Property Services (CPS). MHA was selected to replace existing out-dated fluorescent fittings in the offices and lobby areas of three tenants’ offices; Charlemagne Capital, Nedbank Private Wealth, and Tristao Services. A spokesperson for CPS said: ‘After discussions

with our residents about rising electricity costs, increased pressures to reduce carbon emissions and ways to improve light levels in our building – we sought a lighting supplier who could deliver on our strict brief: to find a lighting solution that would improve light quality for our leaseholders, whilst significantly reducing energy consumption and carbon footprint.’

After plentiful research to find the optimal solution, MHA’s TiLites supplying 80CRI and 4000 kelvin colour temperature were selected as this particular combination can significantly enhance the working environment; it’s known to aid concentration, contributing to a greater feeling of wellbeing amongst the staff. When it comes to specific CRI and colour temperatures, the information isn’t particularly accessible for employers, so we asked Brendan Keely BEng (Hons) MSc MSLL, SLL Secretary, what they should be aiming to achieve: ‘The Code for Lighting requirements state that a Ra greater than 80 with anything from 3300K to 5300K CT is OK, dependent on the client and the design team’s buy in. Plus of course, good visual ergonomic – no glare, good task/surround uniformity, a good range of surface luminance, etc.’

The Isle of Man project involved the installation of 227 luminaires - 160 TL30/700, 53 TL24/700, and 14 TL20 fittings. As well as having a positive impact on staff wellbeing, it has reduced the combined annual lighting energy consumption from 153,925kW/h to 55,053kW/h, and of course the associated costs have tumbled too. Catalina’s spokesperson added: ‘By replacing the lighting in the residents’ offices with low-energy LED fittings, not only are they seeing real cost savings on their energy bills – over £300,000 is expected - but the light colour, output and uniformity is superb, and the initial feedback is that staff are benefiting from the improved lighting levels.

‘We are only two months into the project and already actual meter readings for June suggest we are ahead of the projected lighting energy savings.’

The project scooped the ‘Best Practice in the Private Sector’ category in the Isle of Man’s Energy Awards 2013, which acknowledge the achievements of local businesses and public sector organisations that are reducing their energy consumption and improving efficiency.

area and the café. With an expected life span of 50,000 hours the V-LED 100 are powerful fixed recessed luminaires supplied with DALI dimmable control gear, enabling the lighting to be controlled according to daylight and occupancy levels.

V-LED 200s in ancillary areas have been designed with the visual aesthetic in mind, as well as glare control and the shape of the intensity distribution. A specialist light engine manages the brightness of the LED, while a satin diamond-faceted reflector is an option to further control the luminaire luminance. This management of luminance quality results in a visually comfortable environment for staff.

As well as energy savings, staff welfare is at the heart of the Co-op’s values, as this installation shows. Luxonic’s Peter Boggiano explained: ‘Our lighting for the open plan offices is designed to increase the wellbeing of staff, giving users optimum visual comfort by achieving the correct lux levels for their working environment. The use of micro-prism lensed luminaires gives full control of the polar curve, ensuring that peaks in light levels are reduced and the higher angles are well lit, whilst keeping glare to an absolute minimum. ‘For the Co-op’s offices, we added the directional up-light element to open up the ceilings and to create an inspiring working environment.’

SIGN ON THE DOTTED LINE …

52 Martin Place, which occupies a prime position in Sydney has recently undergone an upgrade to re-brand and re-position the office block, in order to attract new tenants. The works included the complete refurbishment of 19 levels and remodelling two more.

First impressions count and POV’s new lighting scheme for the main lobby centres around innovative sculpture by Matthew Harding, and extensive cove lighting framing

suspended artworks. Integrated spotlights through the foyer space highlight a rich materiality, casting shadows on the floor below, and giving the feel of an airy art gallery space.

‘A critical element is the wall washing to the white marble wall, which enhances the feeling of daylight ingress,’ said Mark Elliott, design director at POV.

At night the wall washing is turned off and the drama of in-ground up lighting to the lift core begins to unfold. The shift from a typical down-lighting scheme, so often seen in commercial lobby spaces, together with attention to detail in the integration of the lighting, creates a point of difference and a rich sense of quality to the entrance of this prestigious building.

The new foyer and concierge areas conceived by Davenport Campbell architects are clear, open spaces with a welcoming atmosphere. Skilled lighting supports the design, and the building’s environmental performance is enhanced with the introduction of energy-efficient T5 lighting systems. Additionally, every floor is now configured to bring natural light flowing deep into the floor plate from all four sides to make the most of the column-free space.

ADVICE FOR CAVE-DWELLERS Finally, if, like me, you work in a home office with rather dodgy lighting, don’t despair, Lyco’s Glen Harper has some useful advice for us hermits.

‘Often poor lighting is accompanied by poor air quality; the two things combining or acting individually to trigger headaches, dry throats, queasiness, and a general feeling of malaise,’ he explained. ‘One of the beauties of designing a home office is that few people care more about your health and mental wellbeing than you do You’re completely free to create a space that inspires you to work, and works to inspire.

‘At the heart of most home offices lies a computer, so it’s worth spending a few moments considering how your choice of lighting affects the monitor and your health. Avoiding glare is a good, general-purpose place to start - that’s a universal ‘want’. Cutting out glare is a major step in reducing risk of eye strain and associated problems such as persistent headaches. ‘Graphic artists and photographers of serious intent often use a desktop monitor that is calibrated and profiled, and for them it’s useful to think of ambient lighting as an extension of the calibration process.

‘Light sources need to be positioned thoughtfully, and controlled in their output according to the task at hand. Scope wire lights, as well as being contemporary in appearance, are a particularly versatile solution for ceilings that are sloping or uneven, with small spotlights being positioned anywhere along an unsupported span.

‘The importance of creating ambience should not be underestimated when planning a home office. When you’re burning the midnight oil, there’s something rather lonely and dispiriting about using a monitor as your main source of illumination.

‘One of the possible uses for a desk lamp is to position the head so it’s hidden behind your screen. This adds a glow of wall-washing rear ‘corrective’ lighting that helps create soothing atmosphere and again reduces the likelihood of eyestrain. Some of the more expensive modern TVs incorporate the same idea, emitting a glowing light from behind and around the back of the television.’

A critical element is the wall washing to the white marble wall, which enhances the feeling of daylight ingress

Goingunderground

Traditionally, medical research is seen as being undertaken in dark basements and forgotten corners of hospital buildings. While the Nuffield Department of Medicine’s new premises are underground, there’s nothing gloomy or forgotten about them

The Nuffield Department of Medicine has a new medical research building in the Oxford Churchill Hospital. Due the characteristics of the building, it was decided that the £22m project would extend to the basement.

Working with IBI Nightingale architects, and M&E consultant, Jon Lopex of Long & Partners, iGuzzini’s design brief was to create a modern, open, office space with straight lines of light running across the ceiling, with additional spots of light to continue the linear approach. The lighting was to provide a uniform line with no shadowing. In addition, the architects wanted to continue the linear theme down the wall, using the architectural folds as a feature.

iGuzzini proposed its iN range to create the continuous linear effect, with Deep Laser LED downlights. Using existing recessed iN90 structure and replacing the traditional fluorescent light source with high output LEDs, allowed it to extend across the ceiling to create indiscriminate lengths and patterns. LEDs allowed the wall effect to continue all the way to the floor, which a typical florescent option would not be able to achieve. To create the continuous line of light, Deep Laser LED spotlights were used to great effect.

Today, lighting schemes are more complex than in the past and Building Regulations and guidelines require a more holistic approach to the lighting needs of the end user. Supported by its exhaustive know-how, vast experience and high awareness of social issues, iGuzzini responded to the users diversified and energy saving environmental needs with the inclusion of DALI ballasts within the design. Chosen according to the specific functions and application areas, they represent the perfect solution for multiple settings and situations. These include dimming of relevant areas depending on occupancy through presence detectors, as well as the choice of creating zones of varying lighting levels for different uses within the space.

‘By choosing to go with the LED option, the building will stand to benefit from approximately 37 per cent energy saving over the fluorescent scheme it’s replaced,’ explained iGuzzini key accounts manager, Keith Cross. ‘If the maintenance and longevity of the product is factored in, then these savings are increased year on year.’

REFINED TALENTChristopher Boots, a rising star of designer lighting based in Melbourne, Australia, has launched his collection of pendant lights at The New Black gallery in San Francisco.

‘The New Black pioneers in bringing my work in the United States,’ said Boots. ‘I’m delighted to have a new home in a fabulous city, San Francisco, which I’d proudly call my second home.’

The NWBLK is a retail environment headed by Steven Miller, where designers, craftsmen and makers conspire to produce and present the furniture, fashion and objects that define the 21st Century.

Boots has been quoted describing his work as; ‘Refined, raw, chunky, elegant, primal, complex, simple…’. Certainly his materials reflect nature at it’s most primal: steel, quartz crystal, zinc, bronze and borosilicate glass are among his favourites. This year Boots’ themes include poetry, geometry, gold, and minimal-maximalism. As always the titles of his pieces reverberate with reference to the classical world, the history of science, myth and legend.

At his studio in Fitzroy, Boots and his team hand strive to ‘keep pushing the boundaries’ as he puts it. All products are made using a broad variety of techniques by a team of glassblowers, copper-smiths, ceramicists, sculptors, and bronze casters, all sharing a commitment to the high quality. Boots works with these artisans like a conductor leading an orchestra playing in perfect harmony.

In the UK, Boots’ designs are available from Fiona Barratt Interiors.

In controlWhen the management team at Antwerps De Vlaamse Opera were looking for a new lighting control desk, they were keen to find a replacement, which could easily operate conventional lights, moving heads, LEDs and media servers. The nearby Koninklijk Ballet van Vlaanderen (Royal Ballet Flanders), with which De Vlaamse Opera is soon to merge, also began to look for a new lighting desk. Koen Ceulemans, account manager at ETC dealer, FACE said: ‘We immediately recommended a desk from ETC’s Eos line. While the opera house’s budget – and control room size – wouldn’t stretch to the full size Eos Titanium, we knew that its smaller sibling, Gio, would be perfect.’

Managers from the two organisations had discussions, and the Koninklijk Ballet van Vlaanderen also made the decision to buy a Gio. FACE lent a Gio console to the opera house for two days, so that the team could see whether it worked for them. ‘After that,’ Ceulemans said, ‘they wanted to practice using it to run a full show – creating it in Antwerp, then transferring it to Ghent.’

Glen D’haenens, head of lighting at De Vlaamse Opera, added: ‘During our full production using Gio, Koen stayed with us for a couple of hours to help and assist, but it turned out we really didn’t need him – we were up to speed so quickly that he could go back to the office!’

Clapham Junction railway station is set to achieve significant energy savings with the introduction of an intelligent lighting control system.

Open Technology’s LiGO system will provide the exact light levels required across the station, matching lighting use to

train timetable, passenger presence, daylight levels and other varying uses. The system is able to ensure maximum savings throughout the year as well as reduce light pollution in the surrounding area.

For the first time, the lighting will automatically be dimmed to a minimum

value when the station is not in operation, or switch the lights off when the station is completely closed. On average, this is expected to amount to savings of 35 per cent of usual lighting use.

Clapham Junction will be the latest in a series of projects that has seen

Network Rail and South West Trains work in partnership with Open Technology to introduce intelligent lighting controls. Following an initial installation at Woking in 2010, LiGO has now been introduced at 25 stations and train maintenance depots across the Wessex Route.

e all expect the streets of our town to be lit at

night so that we are able to use them safely; however

very few of us ever consider the details of how that lighting is

achieved. Providing good street lighting is a complex process as lighting for pedestrians has two parallel functions.

Firstly, it is necessary to provide light so that people can move through the area safely and comfortably. To do this people must be able to see obstacles, such as broken paving stones and kerbs, so that they can avoid them. They also need to be able to recognise other people approaching them, so that their intentions are known and so that they can take avoiding action if needed. Moreover, people need to be able to orientate themselves so that they can find the route to their destination. The light needed for all of these visual tasks needs to be provided in a way that does not cause glare or discomfort.

Secondly, even if lighting for all of the previously mentioned visual tasks is provided, but the atmosphere on the street does not feel right, then people will not choose to use the road and the lighting will be wasted. There are many factors that can lead to people choosing not to use a road at night, but a key reason is associated with fear of using a particular

U R B A N J U N G L EPeter Raynham, chair of the Light and Lighting Committee at BSI, and senior lecturer in lighting, University College London, discusses night-time pedestrian street lighting

area. Studies have shown that people are more fearful of using any given road at night than they are during the day, and that good street lighting can minimise the difference between day time and night time fear levels.

There is currently a lot of research into what constitutes good street lighting, and researchers are trying to understand what pedestrians actually look at, and which aspects of the visual environment provide reassurance and mitigate against potential fear. An understanding of these features permits the selection of appropriate lighting criteria. This research is being driven by the need to reduce the amount of energy used for street lighting. In the past if there was uncertainty on how to light a particular area, then the lighting engineer would provide a slightly higher level of light to ensure that a safe scheme was provided. However, now all local authorities are looking for energy savings and it is becoming harder to specify anything other than the bare minimum of lighting for the job.

One of the key results of recent research is the importance of light source colour. Streetlights

traditionally used sodium vapour lamps that produce an orange-yellow light, and

it has been found that using white light with a greater amount of blue has significant advantages. Over the past five years or so, many town centres have switched to white light, and at the same time reduced the amount of light provided, saving energy.

HELP AT HAND

As with any engineering-based service where there is some degree of complexity in providing the right solution, there are British Standards available to guide the designer in the selection of appropriate lighting. The current system of lighting standards considers lighting to fall into one of three sets of classes - covering traffic routes, subsidiary roads and conflict areas. The basic sets of lighting requirements come from European Standard BS EN 13201-2:2003 Road Lighting. Performance Requirements. This European Standard is supported by two further Standards in the 13201 series that give details on how to calculate and measure the performance of a road lighting system.

However, the key document that designers need is BS 5489-1:2013 Code of Practice for the Design of Road Lighting Part 1: Lighting of Roads and Public Amenity Areas. This Standard provides advice on selecting the most appropriate type of lighting for a given section of road. It explains the general principle of street lighting, and gives advice on the location and maintenance of street lighting equipment.

One of the key recommendations for urban centres in BS 5489 is the use of lighting master plans. These plans are necessary to ensure that the lighting in a town reflects the whole structure of the urban centre, so that it compliments the existing built environment. The Standard lists a number of issues that need to be considered:

• Lighting to provide safety for pedestrians from moving vehicles and to deter antisocial behaviour

• Lighting commensurate with the character and volume of vehicular traffic, including cyclists

• Lighting design and choice of equip-ment in relation to the architectural scene and urban landscape

• Control of illuminated advertisements in the interest of amenity

• Control and integration of permanent floodlighting and architectural lighting installations into the visual master plan

• Control of temporary special lighting effects, such as floodlighting and festive decorations

• Control of road and other direction signs and their relationship with other illuminated material

• Control and blending of light from both public and private sources, e.g. bus shelters and telephone kiosks

• Protection of the environment and property from obtrusive light

• Protection of installations from accidental or deliberate damage

• Reduction of street clutter• Maintenance of installations

As can been seen from the list of topics addressing the issues of town centre lighting, it is no simple matter and requires much more than just planting a few lighting columns.

The Standard supports this, and many of the issues are discussed in greater depth in a 10-page section of the Standard. The lighting master plan produced needs to take into account many of the other planning documents used to guide the development of the town.

If a lighting master plan is successful, it can have a big impact on the night-time economy of the area, and this has been recognised as a critical element in a sustainable town economy. This was documented in the report, The Evening Economy and the Urban Renaissance1, which was created by an ODPM (Office of the Deputy Prime Minister) Parliamentary Select Committee Inquiry in 2003. The report also addressed issues including how to make city centres attractive in the evening, and what strategies local authorities can adopt to support the evening economy. Clearly lighting has a major role to play.

We all take urban lighting for granted, and most of the time when we are out at night we do not consider the way that light is being provided. However, now that you know the complexity of getting it right, I hope next time you are in a town centre at night, you will take a closer look and consider if the light provided is revealing the townscape in an attractive way.

annizaro House is one of the oldest hotels in Wimbledon. Having played host to Lord

Tennyson, Henry James, Oscar Wilde - and even the Maharajah of the Punjab - the hotel hosted some of history’s most colourful characters before it became a boutique hotel back in the 1980’s.

Cannizaro House has recently undergone a multi-million pound refurbishment to restore it to its former grandeur as one of the most glamorous hotels in South West London. The final stage in the three million pound renovation project is the refurbishment of The Orangerie restaurant, which overlooks the stunning Cannizaro Park. And

Chelsom was commissioned to create a unique lighting feature for the project.

A team from STS Design created a beautiful, contemporary interior scheme, which complemented the original hotel building perfectly. Chelsom worked closely with STS to ensure that the lighting enhanced the overall design aesthetic. And the spectacular centrepiece chandelier is undoubtedly the focal point of The Orangerie. The design incorporates a cascading sculpture of around 200 clear glass balls, offset with a single sphere of lime green mouth-blown glass, which is designed to co-ordinate with the wider interior scheme. Randomly suspended on fine steel strainer wires around a two-metre

diameter ‘cartwhee’l frame, the hand-made, varying sized glass ellipses have been designed to create the illusion of bubbles, floating skywards.

The fitting creates a striking point of impact as visitors enter The Orangerie, yet importantly for a busy hospitality venue, it offers ease of maintenance. A chrome ceiling plate allows easy access to the transformers. Illuminated by 35-Watt Britespot lamps built in to the metal framework, the fitting serves to complement the natural light of The Orangerie; it has been designed to be as energy efficient as possible, and to provide a long life solution in order to reduce maintenance.

ADDED DRAMALighting designer, Richard Lambert of Lambco Lighting has used DTS Nick and Jack moving lights for productions of Miss Saigon at the Gulbenkian Theatre in Canterbury, and Shadowlands at Buckfast Abbey, Devon.

The shows required very different lighting treatments, but the DTS Nick 600 LED Wash and Jack Spot luminaires were both chosen for their small size, brightness, low power and feature-packed capabilities.

On the Jack, Lambert commented: ‘This is extremely versatile as you can expand the iris and it becomes a wash.’ As for the Nick, he said: ‘It’s a really powerful LED wash fixture, fast, with an excellent zoom and very light in weight – so it ticks a lot of boxes.’

He added that with just these two DTS fixtures he could easily cover the stages, so they are ideal for any size of show. A selection of generic fixtures was also utilised in both cases. Control included the new 8-port Ethernet node from Cooper Controls, to distribute DMX between all the light sources onstage and the Orb XF console. The desk was also from Cooper Controls and used to trigger an Arkaos media server running video elements of the production’s visuals.

T U N G S T E N A L T E R N A T I V E ?When lighting designer, Neil Austin was looking to light Liolà at the Lyttelton Theatre, he wanted to provide the same smooth dimming he is used to with traditional tungsten, but using energy efficient fittings, so he settled on ETC. Liolà became the first show outside the US to be lit with ETC’s new Source Four LED CYC fixtures, powered by the its LED Lustr+ engine.

‘The ETC Source Four LED CYC is a game-changer,’ said Austin. ‘At last there’s a high quality, low-energy alternative to the most electricity and gel-hungry section of theatre lighting. There were looks I was able to achieve on the cyclorama for Liolà that would not have been possible with any other method of lighting – not even my beloved tungsten!’

More than 300 Anolis ArcDot LED pixels have been installed to light the façade of the water slide at Noble Park Aquatic Centre (NPAC) in Melbourne, Australia.

The lighting scheme, designed by Electrolight for Suters Architects, transforms the 19.5m structure into a beacon of contemporary elegance that is clearly visible from the town centre. The slide design is inspired by images of waterfalls and evokes the NPAC tagline “Water for all”.

The requirement was for a fluid visual lighting effect that could be vibrant or subtle and that would explore the impressions of light, shadows and depth associated with cascading water. Dave Anderson, who led the design for Electrolight, approached The ULA Group’s Jason Saunders to find a lighting solution to meet the brief. Saunders suggested ArcDot LED Pixels, which proved to be the perfect solution.

‘While the initial requirement had been for an RGB fixture, the ArcDot’s RGBW capabilities opened up additional potential for the creation of more colours and spectral subtleties,’ explained Anderson. ‘The decision to go with Anolis was made after extensive trials. Anolis has a reputation for a robust build and quality engineering and presented a comprehensive package that fitted the budget and included flexible, user-friendly controls.’

NO FASHION V ICT IM

Robe’s ROBIN moving lights have been used for the first time at London Fashion Week by lighting designer, Nick Gray of Renegade.

Gray lit two high profile shows - Jasper Conran at the Saatchi Gallery, and Roksanda at The Place, London Bridge using MMX WashBeams.

It was the first time Gray has used the lights in his fashion work – he had been wanting to incorporate moving lights on his fashion projects for some time, but until recently, didn’t feel the appropriate fixtures were available.

He commented: ‘I have been keeping my eye on Robe for a while as they are now bringing some really interesting products to the market.

‘For both these shows, the clients wanted drama and variation in the lighting intensities, so it was an ideal time to try the WashBeams, especially as the final effect we wanted was also as close to HMI as possible … but with added control and features.’

November 2013 • www.tlmagazine.co.uk

C U RTA I NR A I S E RBilled as the event that is revolutionising lighting, LuxLive has a lot to live up to, so ahead of this year’s show, TL asks: what’s new for 2013?

Users of lighting will benefit from being able to see the major players and to hear from expert speakers discussing exemplar projects. For lighting specifiers, such as designers, consulting engineers, and architects, LuxLive is an absolute must: a ground breaking mix of new technologies and innovations, interactive features, talks and demos.

The event features more than 50 hours of free-to-attend talks, debates and panel discussions. The programme has been divided into the key end-user sectors that are feeling the effects of the LED revolution. In each sector, they’ll look in-depth at some of the best projects, drill into some of the key technologies and debate the particular problems of that sector in a dedicated panel discussion. Additionally, there will be streams on OEM issues, such as warranties, a dedicated theatre for designers, CPD sessions and the Society of Light and Lighting’s Masterclass programme, and the Young Lighter of the Year presentations.

Visitors can take part in debates about LEDs and lighting controls in the LuxArena, and listen to a comprehensive financing briefing by providers, such as the Carbon Trust and Siemens, giving an invaluable overview of the various ways to fund a lighting retrofit.

Dextra, the largest privately owned lighting manufacturer in the UK, will be showcasing its latest LED products and bespoke lighting solutions, plus previewing 2014’s product launches on stand D39. Products on show will include Impervia 65, a mainstay of company’s product range offering a recessed or surface mounted IP65 option, suitable for arduous applications where luminaires are subject to dirt, dust and water. The range has now been extended to include an LED variant providing reduced energy consumption & low maintenance ideal for where access is restricted. www.dextralighting.co.uk

On Stand E36, Netherlands-based eldoLED will be exhibiting its 30W SOLOdrive LED drivers, which are perfect for downlights that require LED dimming down to zero, whether in a DALI or 0-10V control environment. All of its 30W driver versions feature a single LED output for the connection of a high-power LED array. The driver’s LEDcode functionality allows fine-tuning of the LED driver’s configuration for specific lighting applications, and can easily extend the LED driver’s feature set with sensors to create a complete and integrated sensor-operated lighting solution.www.eldoLED.com

Litecool is good with heat, or rather getting rid of it. The company has a patent portfolio around how to package and modularise any LED die for thermal performance.

To match the company’s philosophy of getting as much light out of the LED

as possible, it is a logical step to use blue LEDs and remote phosphor. So that is where the product range starts; remote phosphor LED modules for both linear and circular applications.

Anyone with heat problems can book an appointment with, CTO, Dr Andy Young on stand C50. They are open to anyone from any company with any thermal question. www.litecool.co.uk

1025 AD, a 37m long Viking warship of the Danish fleet rode the northern waves. Excavated in 1997 from a Roskilde fjord bed, the ship has now been partly restored by building a massive steel skeleton around its wooden remains. Now Roskilde 6 is undertaking another extraordinary voyage, this time as an integral part of the National Museum of Denmark’s hugely popular exhibition Viking, which runs until the end of November.

ETC’s Source Four LED fixtures, controlled by an Ion console and Unison Paradigm system, are helping to bring the vessel to life for visitors to the exhibition. Lighting designer, Hans Henrik Schmidt has done a stunning job of bringing the exhibits to life, while creating new boundaries using LED lighting. He explained: ‘This is the first such use of LED lighting in a museum in Denmark, and exhibition reviews that we’ve seen, which mention the lighting have been overwhelmingly positive.’

Schmidt worked with ETC dealer, Bico Professionel and the museum’s head of AV, Michael Bjørn, to come up with an exciting lighting scheme that would highlight the ship and surrounding exhibits.

‘The managers were keen to use ETC’s energy-efficient LED technology, because of the quality of light and appropriate colour-rendering index values,’ continued Schmidt. But the most important aspect of the lighting, from the museum’s point of view, was that the light output would not damage the exhibits, which included the ship and artefacts.

‘We recommended ETC Source Four LED Lustr+ for their low heat and minimal UV output,’ said Schmidt. ‘Even though they have indigo LED emitters, which would highlight whites just like a blacklight, there is virtually no UV, which could damage the 1,000 year old ship.’

The Lustr+ fixtures have also been used to enhance the backdrop of video projections showing animated Viking invasions. ‘I analysed the colours in the movie,’ said Schmidt, ‘and reflected them not only in the walls surrounding the screen, but also the lighting on the ship itself. For example, when a city burns, or a ray of sunshine is seen in the film, the Lustr+ can produce warm yellows, reds and oranges in the reflections. And when there is a flash of lighting, we see a strobe effect.’ All of the lighting was programmed by freelance operator, Jan Michael Jensen using the museum’s own ETC Ion control desk. Immense care was taken to ensure that no accidental damage could be done to the ship or other exhibits, so using the Ion control desk allowed the team of curators to keep close contact to a bare minimum, and then for set up purposes only. After that, everything could safely be done from a distance.

‘Because no one was allowed near the exhibit in case of harming it, the fixtures all needed to be addressed remotely once they were in situ. RDM came in very handy,’ agreed Schmidt.

The show was then transferred to a Unison Paradigm system, using the snapshot function. ‘That way, the day-to-day lighting can be operated by minimally trained staff, such as gallery attendants, cleaners and security,’ said Schmidt. ‘Normally, the system can be started at the beginning of the day using a key-operated switch, and it runs a timed program that contains all cues and triggers for the video performance.’ Staff can use the panel to turn the system on or off, but other lighting adjustments can only be carried out by authorised personnel via the Ion desk.

ETC’s Unison Paradigm control system makes lighting easy to operate by a wide range of staff. From highly trained technicians, to front of house staff or the cleaning team, each will require access to a range of different lighting settings. By offering simple push button panels or an LCD screen, Paradigm allows each user the lighting they need without requiring the services of a lighting operator, or risking disturbing a performance by turning the house lights on accidentally.

Once configured, any member of staff can easily operate the system, but for security, the LCD touch-screens can be pass-code locked to prevent unauthorised access.

Paradigm can be set to run automatic events: to dim after closing time, or to come on when the venue opens, for example, or even at a set time before sunset every day. With the addition of a daylight sensor, which adjusts the light levels based on the amount of ambient light coming in through the windows, saving on power consumption can be made.

Because no one was allowed near the exhibit in case of harming it, the fixtures all needed to be addressed remotely once they were in situ

Ex-Or delivers 70% warehouse energy savingsEx-Or’s market-leading range of energy saving lighting solutions has been extended with the launch of Mid-Bay LightSpot PIRs, meaning there is now a full range of programmable PIR presence detection systems suitable for ceiling heights ranging from 8m up to 16m, typically found in warehouses and industrial units. Like the long-established Hi-Bay LightSpot which is optimised for heights of 12m to 16m, the new Mid-Bay LightSpot offers 360 degree movement detection, but optimised for lower heights of 8 m to 12 m. This ensures that effective presence detection with maximum energy savings can be achieved. Both Hi-Bay and Mid-Bay LightSpot allow positioning at the end of the aisle, further extending LightSpot’s energy saving capability. This is made easy with the addition of a special sensor lens mask offering more efficient detection. Energy cost savings of up to 70 per cent or more can be made in industrial and commercial warehousing and storage buildings with high ceilings. This is thanks to LightSpot’s ability to ensure the lights are never left burning needlessly in areas that have been vacated or where there is enough natural light. Both Mid-Bay and Hi-Bay LightSpot are simple to commission after installation - and can be easily reconfigured in the future in response to the regularly changing operational spaces within a dynamic warehousing environment. Commissioning Ex-Or lighting controls has been made even easier with the recent introduction of the Ex-Or HP18 LightSpot handheld controller. This low cost, pocket sized remote control is simple and intuitive to use for both installers and end users. The new Mid-Bay LightSpot is available with flush or surface mountings and is compatible with DALI or DSI ballasts.
