Discovering the EtruscansThe cultural, artistic and architectural traces left in Southern Tuscany by the Etruscans - a people that has always been portrayed as enigmatic and mysterious - are still an integral part of the history, cities and landscapes of that which once was the very heart of Etruria. A heritage that is still largely accessible to visit, get to know and explore in the extraordinary villages founded by the Etruscan people, thanks also to a system of museums and archaeological sites scattered throughout the nature and landscapes of Tuscany. The means, eras and territories through which Etruscan civilisation developed in Tuscany are multiple, at least as many as the itineraries proposed to take you on a discovery of this people of farmers, urban planners, metalworkers, warriors, artists, traders, navigators, artisans and travellers.

Visits include museums and archaeological sites of the Councils adhering to Toscana Terra Etrusca and the Regional Management of Museums in Tuscany.

The archaeological museums and sites are part of the following museum systems:

Water: a vital element for all civilisa-tions, essential for everyday life,

it was for the Etruscans as for other peoples, a sacred object of worship. This itinerary explores the places where Etruscans and other ancient peoples exploited the precious thermal springs, rivers, lakes and reservoirs.Underneath Chiusi winds am intricate system of tunnels that you can explore during a visit to the Labyrinth of Porsen-na or the “the Underground City” Civic museum, relics of the capillary stor-age of waters; relaxing on the banks of the lakes of Montepulciano and Chiusi (both sites of great community impor-tance, linked to the Sentiero della Boni-fica [Path of the Reclaimed Land], which runs for more than 60km between Chi-usi and Arezzo and which can also be travelled by bike) we can take in an en-chanting natural habitat already known to the Etruscans who used to exploit its agricultural resources. Used for thou-sands of years, the small baths of hot water in Bagni San Filippo are enclosed by magical white limestone formations such as the striking Fosso Bianco, also known as the “White Whale”. In Bagno Vignoni, on the other hand, you can admire the extraordinary basin in the centre of the little village, still today a thermal treasure trove. Just a little fur-ther south, in San Casciano dei Bagni, people have known about the therapeu-tic properties of the mineral-thermal waters since ancient times, just like in

A visit to Etruscan monuments in Tus-can villages is a unique experience.

Starting from the beauty of Mount Ar-gentario, a promontory wedged deeply in the sea, we find Porto Ercole, a sea town that owes the origins of its name to the Etruscans themselves. We pass through Capalbio, the last village of the Maremma, the fortified medieval village strategically placed on the coastal plain. We then leap into the “città del tufo”: Sorano, Sovana and Pitigliano; the latter - known as “Lit-tle Jerusalem” because of its long-stand-ing Jewish community – is home to the Town Archaeological Museums, demon-strating all its splendour not only in the Roman aqueduct but also in the open-air “Alberto Manzi” Archaeological Museum where you can visit the reconstruction of an Etruscan home and the rocky ne-cropolises from archaic and Hellenistic times. In Sorano you simply must visit the Vie Cave: mysterious passages in the tufa rock to be explored by foot, en-joying the shadow-plays and fairy-tale primordial views. A short distance from the “Cavone” Via Cava you can visit the spectacular Ildebranda Tomb, dug out of the tufa rock: one of the most important funerary monuments in Etruria.Continuing north-west, we find Roselle, where time seems to have stopped still: in this archaeological site you can let your mind wander to one of the most

Wine is a precious treasure that the Etruscans produced in large quan-

tities and traded throughout the Mediter-ranean. This itinerary follows the roads of wine, searching out the Etruscan civ-ilisation. Starting in Cortona and its rich past (you simply cannot miss the Etrus-can Academy Museum and the archae-ological park) we pass through Torrita di Siena, a village surrounded by olive groves and vineyards - where in Monte-follonico the famous Vin Santo is pro-duced - to reach Montepulciano, known for its wines and underground wine cel-lars where the Civic Museum conserves some important Etruscan finds. In San Quirico d’Orcia, villages brimming over with natural and historical beauty, a sim-ple walk along the alleyways and streets is enough to immerse yourself in the ancient origins and savour the typical dishes. Between Pitigliano and Scansa-no, two stops of wine-producing and ar-chaeological importance that shouldn’t be missed, we pass along the Vie Cave, spectacular paths dug into the tufa, dec-orated with musk and lichen, created by the Etruscans thousands of years ago. Near Grosseto, the archaeological area of Roselle and the archaeological sites and relics in Gavorrano bring us to the end of this itinerary which concludes with a visit to Civitella Paganico and a small Etruscan tomb that has recently been found.

The olive oil roadsYellow gold of Etruria: tasting a territory to learn about the oil of the Etruscans

ITINERARY 4

In Etruria, oil was cultivated in large quantities and then sold throughout the

Mediterranean; used mainly at the table, the Etruscans also used it in religion to light lamps in front of tombs, illuminat-ing homes and public and private build-ings, in the medical field as a painkiller and, in beauty, to fragrance skin and hair. Many containers for oil-based perfumed essences have been found and are now exhibited in the civic museums of Tus-can villages, in particular between the Valdichiana of Siena and Arezzo. Start-ing from Cortona, all the way to Sarteano, it is easy to perceive the past and feel the Etruscans’ presence in every corner. The eleven legs accompany you on a unique journey between the relics, traditions and curiosities of Etruscan food and agricul-tural tradition and in the use of oil in the various aspects of daily life thanks to the unique pieces found in the various museums, including the MAEC in Corto-na, the Civic Museum of Archaeology of Castiglion Fiorentino, the “Giancarlo Pallavicini” archaeological collection in Trequanda, the National Etruscan Muse-um of Chiusi, and the Civic Museum of Archaeology of Sarteano. Olive groves surround the towns and overlook the hills, making up the typical landscape of Tuscany together with the vineyards, to-day as it did yesterday.

After a visit to the MAEC, where we can also see the precious relics found in the tombs, we embark on an ancient road also signposted as Via Romea Germanica. We descend, passing fields and cultivations to the asphalted road and from there it is a short walk to the carpark of the archaeolog-ical area. We follow the same route back to return.

MURLO, “Cappellone”, Antiquarium Poggio CivitateLivy tells us that the Gauls desired to conquer central Etruria in 400BC at-

tracted by the pleasant wines and gentle land. Grain, along with spelt and barley, were already cultivated by the Etrus-cans who understood the fertility of the land and the trend of the water. In what was the heart of Etruria, there are many places where we can still feel the Etrus-can presence: in Asciano, in the moon-scape landscape of the Crete Senesi home to the necropolis of Poggio Pinci, in Monteroni d’Arbia where there is the enchanting necropolis in the woods of Castello di Grotti, while Murlo is home to the Antiquarium Poggio Civitate with numerous finds from a royal residence dating back to the VII-VI centuries BC. The journey continues along the places where our ancestors worked the land to San Quirico d’Orcia and Castiglione d’Or-cia: these UNESCO World Heritage hills conceal the therapeutic thermal waters sourcing the magical atmospheres of the baths and springs of Bagno Vignoni. The same emotions can be found admiring the springs of Bagni San Filippo, and the views of the white, imposing limestone formations. The Maremma Museum of Archaeology and Art in Grosseto and the Roselle archaeological area are fun-damental steps of the journey, together with the Civic Museum of Archaeology and the Vetulonia national archaeologi-cal site, for unforgettable archaeological visits and walks. And often wounded.” Walking along the rolling crests of the crete, discovering the singularity of the biancane and the history of the villages and castles is an unforgettable experience.

Mount Amiata rises in a fairy-tale land. Amongst blooming green woods

of beech and chestnut in summer and snowy highlands in winter, “the Sacred Mountain” of the Etruscans overlooks the Val d’Orcia and the Maremma; ancestral and mysterious, the Amiata land is dom-inated by the natural forces of the volca-no that has given origin to the rocks, the tufa and hot sulphurous waters linked to the thermal activities. Walking through the paths immersed in greenery, discovering archaeological ruins and previous finds, is a journey back in time with ancient sto-ries, traditions and legends: the Etruscans believed that Mount Amiata was home to Tinia, their most important god. The cinnabar deposits of Mount Amiata were quarried from as early as prehistoric times to produce colours also used by the Etrus-cans for frescoes and to decorate funeral urns. At the foot of the hill are a number of little characteristic villages and thermal springs of volcanic origin which formed millions of years ago when the Amiata vol-cano was still active. The historical ther-mal centres, some of the most charming in Tuscany, are an opulent heritage, just like the plentiful springs of the Fiora.Between Val d’Orcia and Valdichiana, another mountain overlooks the valley: Mount Cetona. Formed millions of years ago in an environment that at the time was coastal, the Tuscan hill is home to a lush naturalistic oasis. The passing centu-

MONTE ARGENTARIO, Panorama

An itinerary that retraces the routes of Etruscan commerce from inland cit-

ies to coastal towns. From the western slopes of Mount Amiata we reach the sea and the portion of coast vied for between the Etruscan towns of Vetulonia and Roselle, location of Argentario and part of southern Tuscany. From the heart of Etruria, we move between the hills until we dock in the ports that the Etruscans reached above all through the Ombrone course and its rivers; at the time, the riv-ers saw a continuous flow of ships brim-ming over with goods. The products that were most exported by the Etruscans included wine, oil, cereals, metals, ce-ramic goods and bronze. Having reached the sea, the cities heaved with life: trad-ers loaded the ships up to then sail the waves towards nearby destinations such as Sicily and Sardinia but also towards more faraway impervious places such as Cyprus, Greece, the Spanish and French coasts and even Syria. In a journey be-tween land and sea, this itinerary allows you to appreciate the mountainous land-scape of central inland Etruria and the more lagoon and coastal areas, today scattered with oases of nature, enchant-ing ports, castles and villages nestling in the hills, museums and incredible ar-chaeological parks.

How did the Etruscans influence con-temporary life? In these ten steps

we can explore the characteristic as-pects of this people through fascinat-ing villages, museums, archaeological sites, stopping to look at the stories and interesting facts on their customs and their way of life. An itinerary centred above all on the top-quality museums and archaeological sites - some of the best in central Italy - looking more in depth at certain characteristic aspects of the Etruscans such as the organisa-tion in the city-state and the particular importance given to the funeral culture that led them to create extended, mon-umental necropolises. From Castiglion Fiorentino, with the materials of the Cassero temple, to Cortona where you can visit the Museum of the Etruscan Academy and City and the monumental Sodo tombs, to the opposite slope of the Chiana Valley with the Chiusi metropo-lis, the dominant city in Etruscan times and the only one in Tuscany where you can still see painted tombs dating back to 50 BC, all the way to Sarteano which is famous for the Quadriga Infernale Tomb (400 BC) or the Civic Museum of Archaeology in Chianciano Terme. The route continues with the ruined necrop-olises of Sovana (Sorano) and Pitigliano and a visit to the archaeological parks of Roselle and Vetulonia, n the civic mu-seums of Grosseto and Vetulonia itself all the way to the royal palace dating to the VII-VI centuries BC of Murlo, in Pog-gio Civitate, an unmissable stop.

Tuscany

Toscana Terra Etrusca was founded to valorise the great historical-artistic heritage of the Etruscans in Tuscany with a top-quality tourism proposal. To this end, the participating Councils – led by Chiusi –have each adhered to the tourism product through a convention under Regional Law no. 86 dated 20 December 2016 “Consolidated Law on the regional tourism system” that has innovated tourism, and which saw the introduction of the homogenous tourism product which defines all the characteristics and services of a territory that make up an offer that can fulfil the demands of specific segments of tourist requirements.

The participating Councils refer to the provinces of Arezzo, Grosseto and Siena and are the following: Abbadia San Salvatore, Asciano, Capalbio, Castiglion Fiorentino, Castiglione della Pescaia, Castiglione d’Orcia, Chianciano Terme, Chiusi (coordinator), Cinigiano, Civitella in Val di Chiana, Civitella Paganico, Cortona, Foiano della Chiana, Gavorrano, Grosseto, Lucignano, Monte Argentario, Monte San Savino, Montepulciano, Monteroni d’Arbia, Murlo, Pienza, Pitigliano, Roccastrada, San Casciano dei Bagni, San Quirico d’Orcia, Santa Fiora, Sarteano, Scansano, Semproniano, Sinalunga, Sorano, Torrita di Siena, Trequanda.

This publication is the result of a contribution by Regione Toscana, February 2020.
