As Kansas City’s downtown is being revitalized the crossroads district has new life. A brewery is to be placed on an existing parking lot at 19th and Central. The Program calls for a small gravity fed brewing system, a pub, beer garden, and mechanical systems to service the building.

The Flint Hills Center for Craft is a start of a new crafts college in Manhattan on a green site west of the city. The building was to include three initial studios, administration, and a private residence, while leaving room and plans for future buildings to be built on the site.

Materiality Wood was chosen as the main building material because of its reputation as a hand crafted material.

Horizontal The building’s ambiance was achieved through single story building height, and long thin horizontal lines in the material.

Case Study HouseThis project was begun with an extensive case study of the Giovannitti House, observing what design strategies Richard Meier used while designing it. Then these principles were then used to design a lake side house for the fish and wildlife manager of the lake.

Key concepts used from Case Study

- Use of a geometric proportion grid.- Align circulation around main living space.- Use main living space to connect all spatial volumes in the house.- Use exterior walls and trees to block views to and from the road.

Preston Education Center“In the end we will conserve only what we love; we will love only what

we understand; and we will understand only what we are taught.”

Baba Dioum

This project was a design make project for Camp Wood YMCA. The camp had bought a new area of land for the 100 year anniversary, the land is urn-touched prairie that is to be used for education purposes. We were broken into small groups to explore different solutions. The client choose which design option worked best for them. Once the Design was chosen the studio grouped together and set about creating construction documents and building the structure.

Tall Grass Prairie Pre-1700’s Tall Grass Prairie Now Flint Hills Region

The tall-grass prairie ecosystem once covered over 400,000 square miles, stretching from the Gulf of Mexico to the plains of Canada. Centuries of semiannual fires have kept this landscape mostly treeless allowing the grasses to be the dominate plant species.

The tall-grasses of this ecosystem have created a deep fertile topsoil through centuries of root decomposition that makes the land perfect for farming. As settlers moved west they replaced this ecosystem with farmland.

The Flint Hills contain over 90 percent of the remaining tall-grass prairie ecosystem. The unique geological make-up of the hills has protected the land of the flint hills from being tilled up and turned into farm land.

Flint Hills Geology

Site

Layers of limestone and shale have protected the tall-grass prairie in the flint hills. With rock layers directly under the surface plows couldn’t turn the landscape into farmland. Instead the land has become grazing for livestock and to keep the ground fertile prairie fires that have maintained the landscape for centuries are now preformed by humans.

Senses

The receptors for most of the senses are in the head which sits above the origin points for most of the events in the prairie. To better understand the small details one should be lowered into a more intimate space so you can focus better.

Selected Scheme

To allow visitors to fully understand the tall-grass prairie the education center divides the different strata and focuses on them individually at different points along a path. By allowing the visitor to focus on one thing element at a time it allows them to see the subtle details that make up the complex ecosystem.

Skill Acquisition

We started practicing techniques of various forms of construction in the first semester. We set about learning how to weld, dry stack limestone and how to work with wood.

Page 40: Torrence Campbell

40

Education Center

The main requirement of the client was that the center disappear from view. To achieve this the larger gathering space is sunken below the hill while the stations are kept to low elevated platforms.

Page 41: Torrence Campbell

41

Main Pavilion

The main pavilion acts as the starting point of an educational walk through the prairie. Here there is space for larger gatherings, a restroom, and storage space for learning material. The gathering space is sunken down to a limestone self that acts as the floor.

Page 42: Torrence Campbell

42

Stations

To encourage visitors to venture into the prairie stations are spread out along a path leading up a hill. The stations have a light touch on the ground as they are anchored to large limestone blocks and suspended above the ground.

Page 43: Torrence Campbell

43

Grass Station

This station was designed to cause visitors to focus on the individual grasses. By lowering visitors their view is restricted to the grass right next to them. The depth into the ground gives them a sense for how deep the roots penetrate into the ground.

Page 44: Torrence Campbell

44

Stone Station

This station is placed to draw attention to existing stone bands that line the hills like topography lines. As the path crosses the band extra stone is added to make a smoother crossing. At this station children examine various rock types and fossils.

Page 45: Torrence Campbell

45

Sky Station

Placed at the crest of the hill, allowing it optimal uninterrupted views of the surrounding landscape. This station is the culmination the constructed path and acts as a launching point for people to wander into the prairie on their own.
