THURSDAY, MARCH 16. 1044 - RRANCE HERALD, To
Time to Plant Victory Garden Has Arrived
Tin ry ganlc.son is at hand. It's time for everybody who can do so to get .started. If you had a garden last year, make plans to enlarge it and to iai.se better quality If you are a beginner with no Hardening experience, pick those' crops which are easie raise and will Rive your family the greatest food value for tl area and the time Involved. Lay out a plan lor the garden these factors In mind. First,
.size of the area, which will partly determine the kind of crop. Second, "likes and dis likes" of the family. Third, the number of people In the family
this factor will determine how much of each vegetable is to be planted. Fourth, a lotation sys tem, which will permit repeated planting so as to maintain a year round supply. Gardening in California In not limited to spring, .summer and fall. Some vegetables grow better with fall planting and winter and spring harvest than at any other time. However, we all think of spring as the time to start.
A family of four can be ade quately fed the year round with fresh vegetables from a 1500 square feet area. The list of vegetables, of course, will not include .sweet corn or melons because they require too much space. Lettuce, other leafy veg etables, greens for cooking, sum mcr squash, tomatoes, string beans1, etc., are the kinds suit able for these smaller area.
The first thing to do is to decide on the area. If it's in the yard, it should have as nearly lull sun as possible and should not be too close to large trees, shrubs, etc., the roots of which will draw moisture from the garden and act as harbors for birds and birds arc very fond of tender garden plains. If there Isn't suitable space in your backyard, locate a suitable vacant lot on which water can be obtained for irrigation. Find out who owns it from some lo eal real estate man or, If neces sary, from the city clerk or the county tax office. Perhaps your local realty board, cooperating with the Chamber of Commerce, has already obtained permission for garden use of such lots. If so, the garden committee of the chamber will know about it.
If the lot has not been used for many years and the weed growth has been turned under inot burned) annually as pait of the fire prevention program, chances are there will be suffi cient fertility in the ground for th<> st.irt of the garden, but not
