Professional profile

My primary scientific achievements are research and innovation in the field of microelectronics systems combined with bio-modelling and biosensing. During my sabbatical (1988-1989) at California Institute of Technology (CalTech), Pasadena, USA I worked Carver Mead (a legend In microelectronics) and his pioneering

research group in Neuromorphic Engineering on modelling neural processing in subthreshold analogue microelectronics. After a steep and inspiring learning curve I recognized the value of international collaboration and the importance of international scientific communities for good science. Especially in rapidly evolving fields like microelectronics and neuroscience, regular matching with leading international scientists is vital. I found my scientific community in the non-profit engineering organization, IEEE, more specific, in the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society (CAS). The recognition of appointing me as technical program chair of the main CAS conference, IEEE International Symposium of Circuits and Systems (ISCAS), several times (first in 2003) has granted me insight in state-of-the-art research and driven both my own as well as my group´s research forward matching an international level. Furthermore, I was elected member of the CAS Board of Governors and later served in the CAS executive committee as vice-president of conferences. A noticeable and important achievement granted through the CAS society was the creation of the cross-disciplinary technical activity named Biomedical Circuits and Systems (BioCAS). Together with two colleges we started the first IEEE BioCAS conference in 2004, now a leading conference in the field. Realizing the potential of the BioCAS initiative, we initiated the journal IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Circuits and Systems in 2007 and I served as Editor-in Chief the first 4 years. The journal has grown fast and is now the leading journal in the field (IF>4.2). The BioCAS community is still vibrant and active spinning off new and more specialized activities like the IEEE BrainCAS workshop initiated by me as general chair of the BioCAS 2016 conference in Shanghai bringing together neurological hands-on specialists and engineers for creative interaction. My CAS involvement connected me with Chris Toumazou at the CAS group at Imperial College, London, UK enabling two sabbatical years at Imperial College (2003 and 2013) and a long-term collaboration with regular visits (monthly). When the unique Institute of Biomedical Engineering was initiated at Imperial (2004) I was appointed visiting professor working on microelectronics for biosensing. A major achievement is our work on chemical sensing in microelectronics (ISFETs) for lab-on-chip solutions. I am still working at the Bioinspired Technology research group advising MSc and PhD students. During my first sabbatical at Imperial I studied new methods for biosensing using microwaves. Returning back to IFI in 2004 I initiated a research efforts towards microwave biosensing microelectronics. However, this turned out to be very challenging. Only by “breaking” the standard design paradigm (von Neuman) and explore a fundamental new coding scheme (Continuous-Time, Binary-Value) microelectronic solutions were possible. Based on these principles my bright MSc student, Håkon, managed to implement the first pulsed radar in standard digital technology (CMOS) as reported in his MSc thesis (2006). The single-chip pulsed radar solution was commercialized as the spin-off company, Novelda AS, now a leading global supplier of single chip, short-range radar. Although the radar technology is generic, the primary use is remote sensing of human breathing and even heart beats. My curiosity for new and usable technology started in my early days at IFI setting up the first national internet connection in Norway in 1983 from IFI (oslo-vax) leading to the first commercial internet company, Oslonet AS (1991-1994). As an assistant professor on the MUSIKUS project (O-J Dahl) we printed music scores using an old-fashion pen-plotter. The quality came out quite well and was used for printing melodies for the songbook named “Barnas egen verden” in 1979, to our best knowledge the first high-quality computer-generated scores ever published. My greatest reward as scientist is to work with skilled and enthusiastic colleges (friends), MSc and PhD students from all over the world. The mutual inspiration of challenging discussions, solving problems and even move scientific frontiers is deeply appreciated.

pulsed radar solutions in modern technology. The ne2w coding scheme combined with understanding of signal

noise enabled new solutions for weak signal recovery.
