A message from Mr BertramHave we reduced the Gospel message to say, “Be nice to each other, just as I have been nice to you.”?

During the recent school holidays I had the opportunity to visit Tokyo. Before leaving I did a little research into how I should behave whilst there so as not to offend the locals and look like an uncouth Australian.

The Japanese have particular styles of food, clothing, bathing, woodwork, poetry, religion, art, music, literature, gardening and flower arranging that are completely different to anywhere else in the world. I expect that if I moved to England or America I could blend in pretty quickly but this could never happen in Japan. Besides looking quite different I could not manage all the different quirks of good manners considered essential by all Japanese people.

When stepping inside someone’s house you must always remove your shoes and place them pointing towards the door. You must never use a handkerchief to blow your nose. You must have a shower and rinse off before you get in the bath.

But above all, you must be polite. In Japan, everyone is polite to everyone else. Cleaners, waiters, managers, shop assistants and pedestrians are all considerate, obedient and polite to everyone else. In Japan the trains always arrive within 7 seconds of the scheduled time because it would be rude to be late.

And so I was left with a feeling that the Japanese people are very nice.

The modern interpretation of Christianity says that Christians should always be nice as well. But the more I come to understand the true meaning of the Gospel the more I see that it is supposed to be challenging, confronting, distressing (to the wicked), comforting, reassuring, unchanging and eternal. It talks of putting on the armour of God and taking up a sword as though we ought to be going into a battle (Ephesians 6: 13-17). In particular it never speaks of compromise for the sake of good manners.

I pray that each one of us can take up the Gospel and share it as a challenging, confronting yet comforting message and to boldly present it to all people, “in season and out of season”.

So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. Isaiah 41:10a
