CVO & CEO REPORT

Nationally and internationally, the Y is a powerful association of men, women and children of all ages and from all walks of life joined together by a shared passion: to strengthen the foundations of community. Here at home, the Ocean Community YMCA is the leading community organization directly engaging children, adults and families from all segments of our communities in achieving healthier lifestyles. With three branches, two summer day camps and a service region that stretches from southeastern Connecticut to southern Rhode Island, our impact grows every year. Not only are our branches at the heart of their communities but we are also in schools and neighborhoods delivering solutions to social challenges impacting families today. With a commitment to nurturing the potential of kids, promoting healthy living and fostering a sense of social responsibility, we ensure that every individual has access to the essentials needed to learn, grow and thrive. We are confident that we make a real difference in the lives of the people and communities we engage. We are in the schools leading collaborative initiatives with other non-profit organizations including area hospitals to address critical social challenges such as disease prevention, illiteracy and bullying. We are the coordinators of events and road races that build friendships among neighbors and create lifelong memories. In a region with miles of waterfront, we are the leading provider of graduated swim and water safety instruction as well as life-guard certification. Our two summer day camps provide safe natural environments where kids can build their independence and resiliency, as well as, master skills and make new friends. Our Reach and Rise Mentoring Program pairs at-risk youth with caring and reliable adult role models to help these children build brighter futures. In a fast-paced world where many feel increasingly isolated and lonely, especially seniors, we are their home away from home. We are all these things and so much more. We are and always will be, dedicated to building healthy, confident, connected and secure children, adults, families and communities. We put these principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all and inclusiveness and access is at the core of all we do. We promise to never turn any individual or family away from participating in all the Y has to offer due to their inability to pay. We count on the support of our donors and partners to deliver on this promise. In 2018 their caring spirit and generosity made it possible for 3,272 individuals to receive YCares financial assistance to enable them to become a part of the Y family. As we look back at another successful year, we are reminded of the impact that is possible when individuals come together as one. The Ocean Community YMCA is this compilation of caring volunteers, members, donors, staff and partners who together are making our communities stronger and more vibrant places to live, work, and thrive.

The Y puts caring people in children’s lives and nurtures them along their journey

to adulthood so they can become active, thriving, and contributing members of

society.

SCHOOL’S OUT The School’s Out program at the Arcadia Branch

provides after school child care for children

in kindergarten through 6th grade. The

program is designed to meet the varying

needs of families in the Chariho community.

The program is licensed by the Department of

Children, Youth and Families and participates

in the Brightstars quality rating system.

The enrichment program offers homework

assistance, STEAM projects, and gross motor

skill games.

FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

In 2018, we served 22,429 people through programs and membership. 3,272 of those individuals benefited from financial assistance.

FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

Improving our community’s health and well-being is one of our main focuses here

at the Y. We encourage healthy living with programs that are designed to build

overall wellness for members of all ages.

RACE FOR CHASE The Race4Chase Kid’s Triathlon program is a youth triathlon program aimed to provide

children aged 6 to 12 with a safe, healthy non-competitive environment to discover the

sport of triathlon. The program was founded by the Kowalski Family’s drive to honor their

son Chase, who was a victim in the tragic Sandy Hook School shooting. Chase Kowalski

was an enthusiastic participant in youth triathlons and his memory lives on though the

program.

In 2018, we received funding to implement this program. Youth athletes were provided

with the equipment, knowledge, and one-on-one support they needed to become

tri-athletes. For several of these kids, it was the first time that they were taught to ride

a bike or swim! At the culmination of the training, the Race4Chase youth athletes

participated in a triathlon race, a first for many.

The Y is the utmost inclusive membership organization, which transforms lives

and communities through people who want to belong and give back in an era that

needs individuals to come together to improve well-being for all.

We provided over $696,288 in YCares Financial Assistance to children, families and individuals in need.

our community.

NAIK FAMILY Y GRAND OPENING In October of 2018, we proudly

opened the newly renovated

Naik Family Y in Mystic. The

project was made possible with

the generosity of our Capital

Campaign donors, including

Sekhar and Archana Naik who

contributed one million dollars

to the project.

Since opening, the Naik Family Y

has gained more than 1,400

new members!
