It may be the culmi-nation of a long, often tediousprocess to get the coveted im-migrant visa (applying, waiting,interview, medicals, more wait-ing, visa issuance etc.), but it'ssurely not the end of the voyagetoward a new life in Canada.

There's still the issue of set-tling in to life in North America.

And one of the most crucial as-pects of resettlement is employ-

ment. For those who are consid-ering getting into a career orprofession in Canada, thismeans undergoing credentialsassessment. This involves a re-

view of a person's academic andwork record to determine ifthey satisfy Canadian require-ments for licensing or accredita-tion in a profession or occupa-tion.

Since the regulation of pro-fessions is within provincial ju-

risdiction, the immigrant shouldconsult with provincial regula-tory bodies for guidance in thisarea.

But the federal government,in an effort to assist new andprospective immigrants, has es-tablished the Foreign Creden-tials Referral Office which ismandated with offering assis-tance to new and prospectiveimmigrants in determining

whether their credentials meetCanadian standards and what

action, if any, should be under-taken to ensure compliance

with such standards. This mayinclude additional training, edu-cation, work experience or un-

dergoing licensure examina-tions.This agency has developed

an online tool that assists in thisarea which can be accessed byanyone, even those who are justthinking about applying as im-migrants. There are also plansto conduct informational ses-sions on credentials evaluationin key immigrant-source coun-tries, including the Philippines.I will advise our readers whenthis service will come to thiscountry.

is requesting us to provideproof of settlement funds. CanI show that I have a house andlot in Quezon City worth P4M?

A: Settlement funds, or"show money," refer to fundsthat independent immigrantscan use in their resettlement inCanada. The funds should besufficient for the immigrant's

subsistence for at least six

months after landing. But thesefunds have to be readily avail-able upon landing. Real proper-ty does not represent readilyavailable funds (as it still has tobe converted into cash) and so

would not be considered asproof of settlement funds. TheEmbassy normally looks at bankaccounts and other liquid (notfixed) assets to determine

whether an applicant has suffi-cient settlement funds. The suf-

ficiency of the funds is deter-mined based on the size of theimmigrant's family.

worker application?A: It depends. If your son is

still a dependent ( that is, if hehas been continuously at schoolsince attaining age 22 and be-ing supported by you through-out, or is under a disability),

you can. Otherwise, he wouldnot be a dependent child any-more and thus has to apply onhis own as an independent im-migrant. Note, however, thatdisabilities pose separate admis-sibility issues of its own.
