When Pitch Black aka theBoogeyman (Jude Law) threat-ens to sow fear and disbeliefamong children while theysleep, the Moon Man recruits
Jack Frost (Chris Pine) to joinSanta (Alec Baldwin) the EasterBunny (Hugh Jackman), theTooth Fairy (Isla Fisher) andSandman in protecting the in-nocence of children.
The story is a chopsuey of aconcept with its mix of fantasycharacters whose existence de-pend on the belief of children(remember The Neverending Sto-ry, where The Nothing threat-ened to swallow Fantasia? It’squite the same.) Alexandre De-splat provides grand orchestra-tions, but several times itsounds over-scored.
However, there’s much exu-berance in the characters thatthe story pushes through. De-spite not being voiced, Sand-man emerges as the mostadorable. And the animation isrich, colorful and textured thatthe screen literally comes alive.Just note the feathers on ToothFairy which indi-vidually adjuststo her move-ments. 3D isunderutilized,
so it doesn’t matter whetheryou see this in 3D or 2D. Thegood part is that it’s pretty goodpre-Christmas family entertain-ment.
Animahenasyon 2012Ongoing until tomorrow
Thursday is Animahenasyon2012, the 6th Philippine Anima-tion Festival at the College ofSt. Benilde School of Designand Arts in Manila. Competingin different categories are 70-plus entries from students andprofessionals from all over thecountry.
It was my privilege to havebeen one of the pre-selectors ofthe finalists from among 150entries. For the past few years, students from CSB’s School ofDesign & Arts, Ateneo De Na-ga’s Department of Digital Arts& Computer Animation, Ateneode Zamboanga, and Mapua In-stitute of Technology have beenconsistent finalists. A few en-tries came from abroad, eventhough the competition is strict-ly local.
As we have seen from Dayo:Sa Mundo ng Elementalia(2008), RPG Metanioa (2010),Tiktik: The Aswang Chronicles(2012) and a few local TVCommercials, our animationtechniques are approaching in-ternational par. The same canbe said with the finalists of Ani-mahenasyon 2012, whoseworks were selected not onlyfor excellence in design andtechnique but also for their Fil-ipino content.
A few standouts from the fi-nalists are Marianing from NikoSsalazar of CSB-SDA, about abolo-wielding aswang slayer;Reversion by Giancarlo Ng,which has a Playstation RPG-game sophistication; and Bu-rador de Casa by Victor Ian Co-varrubias from ADZU which isvisually lyrical.
Also in the festival are AJSiytangco, Creature TD, Cloth &FX Artist from Lucas Films Ani-mation in Singapore who talkedabout working abroad in ahigh-calibre environment suchas Lucas Animations, and Ar-mand Serrano who is a SeniorVisual Developer for Sony Pic-tures Animation who talkedabout Visual Development orVizDev.
Animahenasyon is the an-nual competition among lo-
cal aspiring and profes-sional animators spear-
headed by the AnimationCouncil of the Philippines, Inc.

Willie’s game planBy Dolly Anne Carvajal
W ILLIE Revillame’s announce-ment on his TV5 show WilTime Bigtime last week
stunned avid viewers. He said he wasgoing to rest in January 2013.
There’s talk thathis show will fold upand he will launch anew show. I asked aKapatid network in-sider about the storybehind the story. Herreply: “We’re not sureabout his game plan.Let’s just wait andsee.”
Willie plays hiscards right, and thepublic will alwaysclamor for him.Confused beauty
One of the mostbeautiful actresses inthe biz is on the vergeof making a major de-cision in her life. Sheseems decided toleave her husband(after over a decade),but it’s still a strugglefor her.
When I askedabout her marriage, tears rolled down hercheeks. “I don’t feelcomfortable talkingabout it,” she sighed.“People may say I’m afailure. I need to sortthings out.”
I could feel herpain ’cause I had mymarriage annulledmany heartaches ago.If there’s anything I
learned, it’s that evenif a relationship ends,it doesn’t mean youfailed if you learnedyour lessons and be-came a better personafterwards.

I immensely en-joyed bonding withCesar Montano, hisfab wife Sunshine,Alvin Anson and Sal-ly Quizon at Bellisi-mo restaurant, whichreopened at a new lo-cation—135 ScoutRallos Extension, Q.C.(call 9273162). Itused to be the houseof Buboy and Shine,so it really has ahomey ambience.
The place isadorned with Buboy’spaintings, which arefor sale. Shine per-sonally supervises theresto and even whipsup some pasta dishes.
Over a sumptuousItalian dinner, Sallytold me that she wasplanning a show bizcomeback, and thatZsa Zsa Padilla ad-vised her to take anacting workshop first.Sally was dreadingthe prospect of cele-brating her firstChristmas without herdad, Dolphy.
Sally fondly re-called the ComedyKing’s last Christmas:“He was bedridden
but when I enteredthe room, he askedhis nurse to get hiswallet; he handed me$200. Then hewinked and said,‘Don’t tell the oth-ers.’” Surely, Dolphywill guide Sally as shereturns to the biz thathe loved the most.
Meanwhile, Shinetold me that she soldsome of her signaturebags because theirpastor said thathoarding such luxuryitems could block thepath to heaven.Buboy kept teasingher about it.
Fun nights likethat make me feel soblessed to have foundreal friends in thisshow biz world.
