FROM THE PASTOR…

As you know we're into the Year of Faith...I'm sure you have been reading in the bulle n and spe-cial inserts about the ac vi es available for you at the parish and the Mission. On a personal level, if I look deep within my heart and am completely hon-est with you, I haven't quite figured out exactly what more or different ac vi es I’d like to do for this Year of Faith. I am suppor ve of this endeavor by the Church, and who would ever be against the Year of Faith? It's like living in America and being against apple pie, baseball and Fourth of July pic-nics. S ll, the call from the Holy Father to deepen our faith is really necessary. So I guess, for me per-sonally, I am going to try to make me for more per-sonal prayer. I am also going to try to plug into as many events and ac vi es as I can to deepen my knowledge of the faith. Even though I am a priest doesn't mean I don't need to grow educa onally in my faith. I heard a priest not long ago last year give a talk to other priests, and he said it dawned on him that he was talking more about Jesus than talking to Je-sus. It was a humorous line, but it made me look at my own prayer life. His words called me to task for a deeper rela onship with Christ. We all know from scripture that God’s mind is not our mind. For God, all things are possible. I have this experience over and over again, where I suddenly realize that God is doing for me what I cannot do for myself. I cannot give away what I do not have. So on a personal lev-el, I am going to make a commitment to try to have more prayer me with God. I want to work on a closer friendship and love of Christ. So, that's my year of faith ba le plan. Now, if any of you faithful parishioners have any ideas or sugges ons for me in this Year of Faith, I am more than willing to lis-ten. Now I ask you, what is your plan for this Year of Faith? God bless! Fr. David Gaa, OFM Pastor

FINDING GOD The splendid magi, all sparkle and dash and solemnity, march right up off the pages of Ma hew's Gospel and into our churches today. Ma hew alone tells us this grand and seduc ve story so that we might see the light and know that the child these magi visited is the fulfill-ment of prophecy, the king of the world that stretches to the magi's home country and beyond, right down the ages to us. We too see and understand anew. Like the magi, our patron saints for this day, we see in the newborn child the king of the universe and light of the world. Like the magi, we find in ourselves a new faith and a new life. Like them, we return to our home by a new route. We are asked to come away from this fes ve season ourselves renewed and awake to the presence of God among us. We are asked to find God where God is to be found, to be a en ve and surprised and ready to bow down in adora on and to offer our gi s.

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. The Community of Mission San Luis Rey

Year of Faith - 2012-2013

The Mission San Luis Rey Community is rooted in the values and spirituality of St. Francis of Assisi. The “Year of Faith” gives all of us a prac cal opportunity to be truly present to one another by listening without judgment, speaking in kindness and addressing differences with care. Faith is a verb that can be demonstrated in our day-to-day ac ons. A quote a ributed to St. Francis sums it up: “Preach the Gospel and if necessary use words.”

The Year of Faith is a “call” for a full Church year to examine, proclaim, and commit to a public witness of our faith. This call is the very mission of the Church. Pope Benedict, in his proclama on of the year states:

“All people have a right to know Jesus Christ and his Gospel: and Chris ans, all Chris ans – priests, religious and lay faithful – have a corresponding duty to proclaim the Good News.” Pope Benedict, Synod on Evangeliza on closing 10/26/12

The Community of Mission San Luis Rey is formed from these six communi es:

• Franciscan Friars of Old Mission San Luis Rey • Mission San Luis Rey Parish • The Retreat Center of Old Mission San Luis Rey • Old Mission Montessori School • The Cemetery of Old Mission San Luis Rey • Franciscan School of Theology (September 2013)

Each of our communi es makes up the greater Catholic Faith Community of Mission San Luis Rey. Each of our communi es has a place in our process of understanding what the Year of Faith can mean for us.

For each liturgical season, we will publish a calendar of the Year of Faith celebra ons and events that are going to be held in our communi es. Other events and celebra ons not part of the Year of Faith will be listed separately.

The Tau Cross, the Year of Faith logo, had a strong appeal for St. Francis of Assisi. He a ended the IV Lateran Council called by Pope Innocent III in 1215. The Pope made a drama c call for a general mobiliza on of Christendom for conversion and penance. Obedient to the Pope, St. Francis signed the Tau Cross on his tunic with a piece of chalk. The shape of the Tau Cross reminded St. Francis of the Cross of Jesus Christ. It would become his favorite symbol, reminding him and his friars of their voca on to preach penance and conversion to Christ. -P. Julian 11/8/12
