Example Body Paragraph: Londono’s use of diction drives home the point that Serial avoids traditional journalism

formats. He writes that producer Koenig presented her material in a “in a form that was

strikingly casual, immersive and transparent, which at times even felt voyeuristic.” Londono

uses the words striking, immersive, and voyeuristic to give the reader a sense of the impact

and obsession listeners have for this podcast. However, by identifying it as casual and

transparent, he is noting the easy, non-traditional method of reporting that conflicts with the

anxiety. This word choice, or diction, can also be seen when Londono explains that Koenig

“sighs at times, tosses expletives and shares her own confusion.” The diction of “expletive”

and “sighs” demonstrate the difference between Koenig’s method of reporting and a more

traditional style, and helps the reader understand the contrast between these two styles. It is

this style of reporting, where the journalist can be so comfortable with the listener that they

can sigh and swear, coupled with a compelling story, that had created such a successful

podcast.
