Chapter I
Introduction
Alternative Medicine, also called unconventional medicine,
therapeutic practices, techniques, and beliefs that are outside
the realm of mainstream Western health care.
The pharmacological and biological treatments that make up
the fifth field of alternative medicine consist of an assortment
of drugs and vaccines not yet accepted in mainstream medicine.
Throughout the ages people have turned for healing to
herbal medicine, the sixth field of alternative medicine. All
cultures have folk medicine traditions that include the use of
plants and plant products. Many licensed drugs used today
originated in the herbal traditions of various cultures, such as
the medication commonly used for heart failure, digitalis, which
is derived from foxglove. In the United States, herbal products
may be marketed only as food supplements. Since they are not
regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), there is no
guarantee of their purity or safety. The World Health
Organization (WHO) estimates that 4 billion people, or 80 percent
of the world’s population, use herbal medicine for some aspect of
primary health care.

Background of the Study
Kamias (Averrhoa bilimbi L. ) is a small tree, growing 5 to
12 meters high. Leaves are pinnate, 20 to 60 centimeters long,
with hairy rachis and leaflets. Leaflets are opposite, 10 to 17
pairs, oblong, 5 to 10 centimeters in length. Panicles growing
from the trunk and larger branches are hairy, 15 centimeters long
or less. Flowers are about 1.5 centimeters long, and slightly
fragrant. Fruit is green and edible, about 4 centimeters long,
subcylindric, or with 5 obscure, broad, rounded, longitudinal
lobes. In the rural parts
of the Philippines, where it is commonly found as a backyard
plant, it is eaten either raw or dipped in rock salt, as a snack.
It could either be curried or added as flavoring for the common
Filipino dish sinigang. The leaves serve as a paste on itches,
swelling, rheumatism, mumps or skin eruptions. Elsewhere, they
are used for bites of poisonous creatures. A leaf infusion is
used as an after-birth tonic, while the flower infusion is used
for thrush, cold, and cough. Cracked heels, also known as heel
fissure, are caused by the accumulation of dry skin on the bottom
of your heels. Routine pedicures prevent cracked heels because it
sloughs away dry skin. However, if dry skin builds up it can
create a callus, which can crack and bleed if not treated

promptly. Cracked heels are especially common in the winter and
in cold climates as the feet are stripped of moisture. Treatment
for cracked heels include moisturizing and exfoliation, temporary
changes in footwear and anti-fungal/antibiotic creams to prevent
infection.

Cracked heel-- are a sign of lack of attention to foot care
rather than just overexposure or lack of moisturizing.
Kamia-- is quite attractive, with its short trunk dividing
into many upright branches which have clusters of leaves, mainly
at the tips. The flowers are small, deep red and have a long
strong, sweet scent. The bilimbi fruit is narrow, oblong and has
five shallow ridges running along its length. The fruit is crisp
when unripe, turns from bright-green to yellowish-green, when
ripe and falls to the ground. The outer skin is glossy, very thin
and tender, and the flesh greenish-white, juicy and extremely
sour. It has a few (about 6) flattened seeds about ¼ inch wide,
smooth and brown.
Heel-- is the prominence at the posterior end of the foot.
It is based on the projection of one bone, the calcaneus or heel
bone, behind the articulation of the bones of the lower leg.
Remover-- To move from a place or position occupied: removed
the cups from the table. To take off: removed my boots.

Statement of the Problem
Generally, this study aimed to determine the fungicidal
effect of Kamias as a cracked heel remover.
Specifically, it aims to find out if we can produce an
alternative medicine for cracked heel out of a kamias plant.
Significance of the study
The result of the study may benefit certain groups of
people.
The High School students upon reading this report, may be
inspired to make similar topics using other plants which are
necessary for the development of the community.
The parents of the high school students, may also be aware
by this study that high school life being pursued by their
children requires some extra funding needed for such projects as
research study and production.
The teachers, may be reminded by this study that the
production of the subject like this does not necessarily require
such plants should be hybrid. There are a thousand other plants
and they are as interesting as the commonly used subject.
Department of Health, may take into consideration the result

of the study which may move them to decisions that may help
provide subsidy or funding to student like us.
Scope and limitation
The study focused on the uses of Kamias as a Cracked Heel
Remover to the people who encountered Cracked Heel.
The materials were limited to the Foot basin, Warm water,
Salts or mild foot cleanser, Towels, Kamias, Towel, Alcohol,
and Thick cotton sock.

Review of Related Literature
Kamias is the Filipino name for a tree scientifically known
as Averrhoa bilimbi. In English, it is known as the cucumber or
sorrel tree. This tropical tree is found naturally in Malaysia
and Indonesia, and its fruit is used both for cooking and
traditional medicine. Though kamias is a highly acidic fruit, it
can be consumed after certain preparations are taken, and it does
provide trace amounts of vitamins and minerals.
Nutritional Values
Kamias fruit contains a small amount of vitamins and
minerals. According to Purdue University, an edible portion of
kamias is considered to be 100 g, and this contains 0.61 g of
protein, 0.6 g of fiber, 3.4 mg of calcium, 1.01 mg of iron, 11.1
mg of phosphorus, as well as trace amounts of other minerals.
Food Uses
Due to the acidic nature of kamias fruit, it is quite sour
and not often eaten raw. In Costa Rica, the fruit is used as a
relish, and people in other countries use it in recipes that
require a sour taste such as chutneys or pickled foods. Kamias

can be substituted for vinegar, used in juices like lemonade, or
even combined with large amounts of sugar to make jams.
Medicinal Uses
Medicinally, kamias can be made into a paste and applied
topically to itchy or swollen skin or skin affected by bug bites.
In traditional Malay medicine, they create an infusion of the
fruit and leaves to remedy a cough, as well as administer a tonic
to women after they give birth. This infusion is also used on
pimples, hypertension, dizziness and diabetes. Those in Indonesia
use the kamias fruit as a treatment for fevers, inflammation,
rectal bleeding, boils and other conditions. The flowers of the
kamias are also used as a remedy for toothaches.
Treatment for Cracked Heels
Often, cracked skin on the feet is simply a pesky symptom of
winter's harsh weather. Common sense tells us that heavy creams
and lotions will relieve the problem, but some cracked heels
require more aggressive treatment. Cracks in the skin on your
heels are commonly known as heel fissures. They usually occur
when skin becomes dry and aggravates the thick, brittle calluses
on your heels. The everyday acts of standing and walking on our
feet places enough pressure onto brittle skin that small cracks

open in the epidermal layer of the skin. While this remains
mostly an aesthetic problem, some patients experience deep cracks
that feel painful and can even bleed or get infected. So as the
days grow colder, take the following steps into account when your
feet start cracking under pressure.
Findings, Interpretation, Analysis of data
Through this test and experimentation. The result of the
study shows that Kamias is a traditional remedy for many
ailments. They ingest the Kamias fruit for respiratory or
digestive problems or use it topically as a treatment for insect
bites, swelling or rheumatism. People also turn flesh of the
Kamias fruit into a paste or ferment the leaves for medicinal
uses.

Methodology
Materials to be used:
(1) Foot basin; (2) Warm water; (3) Pumice stone; (4)
salts or mild foot cleanser; (5) Foot file; (6) Towels;
(7) Kamias; (8) Towel;
Procedure:
1.Fill the foot basin with warm soap and water. Ease your
feet into the soapy mixture. Proceed to soak your feet for a
minimum of 20 minutes. Don’t scrub your feet with the pumice
stone during the soaking phase. Once the cracked skin on your
heels has softened, remove your feet from the tub.
2. Gently scrub your feet with a foot file or pumice stone.
Scrape your cracked heels repeatedly until you have reduced the
dead skin significantly. Be careful not to puncture your skin

with the foot file. Towel dry your feet thoroughly. If you suffer
with diabetes or have a fungal infection, check with your
physician before you proceed with this step. Clean the foot file
with mild soap, followed by alcohol or a germ-killing solution
for sterilization.
3. Moisturize repeatedly
4. Apply fresh fruit to your feet for extra pampering. If
your skin has remnants of dry skin left after the moisturizing
step, apply kamias to your cracked heels. Leave this fruit
mixture on your feet for 10 minutes. Follow this step with a
layer of moisturizer to soften your feet.

Findings, Interpretation, Analysis of Data
Through this experiment we found out that from a kamias and
other materials used, a cracked heel was removed. Once the
cracked skin on your heels was soaked into the warmth water it
becomes softened.
The results of the study showed that while there are a
number of remedies for cracked heels on the market, you can treat
them just as effectively with a method that uses common
ingredients found in any kitchen and in the garden.
Interpretation
This study has proven that Kamias has can cure cracked heel
without need to spend a lot of money to cure the problem. Also
kamias has many uses such that; (1) The juice is effective as eye
drops (regarded as a magic curative); (2) Decoction of leaves or
the juice of the leaves, are often consumed as a cure for
venereal disease; (3) A leaf decoction is taken to relieve rectal
inflammation; (4) The fruit is given to children as a protection
against coughs; (5) A flower infusion is believed be effective
against coughs and thrush; (6) A leaf infusion is a
