Bryce Wiebe serves as the Director of Special Offerings for the Presbyterian Church (USA). In this work, he seeks to connect Presbyterians to the impact of our shared mission and inspire their participation. Prior to this, he worked with the Presbyterian Hunger Program, providing resources and opportunities for Christians to consider the ways they spend money as an opportunity for Christian discipleship. Prior to coming to Louisville, Bryce served as Christian Educator at First Presbyterian church in New Haven, Connecticut, where he wrote children’s plays, developed educational materials, created worship experiences, and led Bible studies that engaged issues of economic justice. Bryce holds an MDiv from Yale Divinity School and BA degrees in Music and Business Administration from Hastings College and retains part-ownership of a small, sourdough bread bakery in Nebraska. When not working, you can find him in the kitchen or at the gym, where he explores God’s many forms of nourishment.

Presbytery Youth Ministry
Senior High Event: “Restless” — Nov. 20-21
The Presbytery Youth Council (PYC) want to thank all of the churches for supporting our first ever COM-PLETELY DIGITAL senior high youth event! The event was called “Restless” — the most obvi-ous reason: The event went on for 12 hours STRAIGHT (7 PM—7 AM). While talking about the restlessness of quarantine we also looked at how the Holy Spirit can give a spirit of restlessness to build the kingdom of God. Students joined in prayer, worship, service, games, and spoke with local pastors about the “big ques-tions” that kept them up at night. Art, video, and poetry challenges gave opportuni-ties to win Amazon Gift Cards (the amounts increas-ing as time went on). It was amazing to see students from across the Presbytery (and Mexico), connect in new and excit-ing ways! Special thanks to our adults who joined throughout the event to help with tech, led music and games, guided discussions, planned service and more.

Continued...CONFIRMATION RETREAT 2021. Due to health and safetyconcerns, the annual Presbytery-wide Confirmation Retreat is cancelled for 2021. We pray that we’ll be able to meet again at Camp Monroe next year.
COMING UPMIDDLE SCHOOL Event: March 19/20 The PYC will host a dig-ital Middle School Event on Friday, March 19/ Saturday, March 20. Unlike the Sr High Event, this will NOT be 12 hours long. PYC are working on plans now and exact times/dates/details will go out via email. Our theme is "Searching for More - More Unity, More Faith, More Jesus”.
Along with members of the Youth Council, mid-dle schoolers will be looking at ways to continue spiritual growth even during a pandemic. We can still grow as a community, grow closer to Jesus, and build upon our existing faith. We’re still planning activities and other details, but we plan to have opportunities for digital small groups, an Escape Room, Music & Bible Study.
MONTREAT YOUTH CONFERENCE (TBD) - A decision hasn’t been made regarding a Presby-tery trip to Montreat Youth Conference. This event is traditionally open to rising 9th graders up through graduated seniors. If we DO send a group, we will need adult chaperones and assistance with transportation. The dates would be August 1-6 - called “Week 6.”
Presbytery Youth Council. If your church has a senior high student that shows gifts for min-istry, please talk with them about representing your church on the PYC! Applications for the 2021-2022 council coming soon.
The PYC is a group of 9th -12th graders who plan and lead events for youth of our presbytery. These events traditionally include an overnight retreat in November and March. Like all minis-tries, the PYC is learning how to adapt during COVID. We hope to have representatives for each church – and have a council that truly reflects our presbytery.
Please let me know how I can support your church’s student ministry. Thank you for your support of young people and youth pro grams in our community.

Camp Monroe welcomes Gene Joiner as the New Camp Director.
The Camp Monroe board of directors is happy to introduce Gene Joiner to the Presbytery of Coastal Carolina and surrounding presbyteries and denominations.
Gene is originally from North Carolina and we are excited to bring him home. For the last 19 years he has been the Executive Director of Christian camps along the east coast. He and his family moved to Camp Monroe in February and will live on campus.
Gene served at Camp Crestfield of the Pittsburgh Presbytery, Camp Krislund, a Presbyterian camp near State College, serving three presbyteries, Maranatha, and Rockfish camps. He is excited to be working with the Board at Camp Monroe and Coastal Carolina Presbytery. Gene has demonstrated considerable skills in program development, expanding camper numbers, staff development, and connections with worshiping communities. Many of his camps have grown from hundreds of campers to thousands in a matter of years.
References for Gene state he is a dynamic leader who is both spiritual, faithful, and has a heart for Jesus. The Camp Monroe search team was very impressed with his well-rounded approach to camping ministry that brings Jesus and faith formation to campers year-round. His skills and experience include marketing, promotions and grant writing, summer camp leadership and growth, adult programming and retreat management. His passion for youth and adult discipleship, organizational skills, and love of God’s Church will be a blessing to all of us.
Gene served as an Airborne Ranger in the US Army and was deployed to Korea for a year. He holds a B.S. in History from Appalachian State University. Prior to working in full time camping ministry he was the head coach for the women’s basketball team at Lees McRae College in Banner Elk, North Carolina.
Gene has been married to Anissa for 23 years and they have four children: Hannah, Madeline, Kaleb and just adopted Sasha from the Ukraine. Anissa is a graduate of Campbell University. Gene believes that, “camping ministry...provides an experience for families to encounter God in a place set apart with radical Christian hospitality, and a place for children and youth to grow and learn who they are in God’s eyes.”

January 22, 2021
Presbytery of Coastal Carolina,
Prayers that you are well and that all around you are healthy in this new year! Sadly, Covid-19 continues to impact our lives and our world. Shortly after celebrating the new year, the governor and the NC Department of Health and Human Services announced that a new strain of Coronavirus (more virulent and highly infectious) has not yet impacted North Carolinians but is to be anticipated.
It is worth noting that vaccines are now available in a very limited capacity. Hopefully, broader access to the vaccine in the near future will finally put this pandemic behind us. Nevertheless, at this time the number of infections in this state continue to rise indicating that this pandemic is not over. If you are among the fortunate few to have received the protection of vaccination, please remain patient and respectful of those that have not been granted similar access. Protections that have become the norm during this pandemic should not be abandoned until vaccinations are increasingly available to the general public.
To further protect our members, congregations, and communities the Executive Board of The Presbytery of Coastal Carolina issues the following mandates regarding presbytery meetings, committee meetings, and presbytery events/activities. As of January 22, 2021, all presbytery meetings, events, and gatherings shall be virtual until further notice. Today’s notification supersedes the boards previous correspondence.
The Executive Board continues to encourage sessions to provide virtual or outdoor worship services. Sessions that allow indoor congregational gatherings should consider canceling for some time – worship, Sunday school, Bible studies, small groups, daycare, nursery, etc. - if members test positive for Covid-19 or local infection rates continue to rise.
Additionally, the Executive Board recommends that sessions which approve in-person worship consider the following list.
1. Worship should be outdoors and implement social distancing. Indoor worshipshould only be considered when “impossible” to gather outdoors.
2. Sessions that permit indoor worship should consider the following.

a. Run heat and/or air conditioning 24 hours before worship. Turn off when worshipbegins to prevent air circulation. Also consider running air conditioning withwindows open to ensure circulation.
b. Determine what you require/mandate for outside groups (AA, NA, scouts, etc) usingthe facilities? Will you leave supplies and mandate the group clean their space afterusage?
c. Session may consider limiting in-person worship participation to a number thatallows easy social distancing within the worship space. Add additional services ifnecessary. Consider requiring attendees RSVP to better ensure you don’t exceedallowable worship numbers.
d. Remove from pews/seats items that can be touched by multiple participants (hymnals,Bibles, writing utensils, envelopes, fans, etc.).
e. Sanitize seating, doorknobs, bathrooms, and other common spaces between services.f. Rope off pews to ensure 6 feet of separation between rows. Seating every other
pew usually does not equal 6 feet of separation.g. Provide hand sanitizer, masks, and gloves for participants that do not have their own.h. Have a designated and gloved handler of common touch surfaces (doors, offering
plate).i. Plan who will address people that do not wear masks, gloves, or social distance.j. Invite participants to bring their own bread and juice for communion or provide pre-
packaged communion cups with wafers and juice.k. Listen to instrumental or recorded music instead of singing congregationally.a. Singers/Soloist and preacher should be as far as 20 feet away from the congregation
unless masked or behind plexiglass.
3. Those attending meetings held indoors should wear face coverings while socialdistancing.
4. Communicate your plan to safely gather in-person with the congregation. Are youlimiting participation numbers? How will you encourage social distancing? Will yourequire masks and gloves be worn? How will you sanitize and disinfect? Will bathroomsbe accessible? How will you safely create, distribute, and dispose of items like bulletins,hymn/song lyrics, etc.?
5. Keep the names of all worship attendees. If someone contracts COVID-19, you will needto communicate with your congregation and members who may have interacted with thatindividual. How will you communicate while maintaining privacy and pastoral care?
6. Update your building use agreements to reflect the new realities of COVID-19.Determine if you are also agreeing to permit facility usage for other in-person gatheringslike weddings, funerals, anonymous groups, etc.
7. Remember that “Christ is Lord of the conscience”. Neither those that participate northose that refuse to participate in in-person worship are to be judged. Session can decideto provide facilities for in-person gatherings. Individual members and pastoral voices canchoose whether to participate in person. Session should make “reasonableaccommodation” for pastoral voices that excuse themselves from participating in-personfor in-person worship.

The Presbytery of Coastal Carolina Committee on Preparation for Ministry
Supplemental Report to Presbytery Prepared by Karen C. Allen, Chairperson
Candidate Christopher Taylor requested to be certified “ready to receive a call.” The committee interviewed Christopher and recommended that he be certified as ready, pending a call, to be examined for ordination. However, Candidate Christopher Taylor has rescinded his request to move his Candidacy to Pittsburgh Presbytery.
In addition to other requirements met and approved in the Application for Candidacy received from Inquirer Austin Vernon, the CPM has received, reviewed, and approved the results of his psychological assessment.
