AGD 2019 ANNUAL SCIENTIFIC SESSIONWhile Mohegan Sun was remote, there was plenty to do there: AGD open mic for stand-up comedy, a WNBA game, the Lionel Richie concert, dining from fine to casual, gambling, shopping, etc.  Basically, if you were bored, that was on you.  It was a great time for networking and camaraderie.  This was definitely the cleanest and least smoky casino ever.  Ever.

TN AGD 2019 recapWhat a great time!

You knew this meeting was going to be different when you checked in with Mrs. Donna Woodall who had uniform and nicely written badges that were legible (so dentists wouldn't scribble them) for all for each day.  Every attendee got an Oral-B Genius power brush and a full sized tube of Crest Gum Detoxify for free, courtesy of Procter & Gamble.  President-Elect Dr. Gary Woodall made waves in the hospitality community by gifting a couple of the brushes to the management team there at the MainStay Suites in Pigeon Forge.

Attorney and national dental speaker Olivia Wann from Modern Practice Solutions was there to co-sponsor and briefly discuss HIPAA, OSHA, office administration issues, etc. and made herself available to answer questions and drew a name for a free course.  Gary and Dr. Anthony Martin staged a great event!  Dr. Howard Farran had everyone laughing through two half day sessions with interesting insights and tips to "Uncomplicate Dentistry."

Region Six Trustee Dr. Mike King and AGD Vice President Dr. Bruce Cassis were the AGD VIPs in attendance.  President Dr. Tony Carroccia handed out awards.  He accepted the Legacy Award on behalf of Mrs. Joan Simmons for the late Dr. Clifton Simmons.  Dr. Ernie DeWald accepted his half of the co-Dentist of the Year Award for himself and his partner, Dr. Mac Edington, the other co-Dentist of the Year.  They practice together, served in the Army together and are quite active in the Clarksville community.  Dr. Dewald has been more involved in education where Dr. Edington has been more involved in leadership in dentistry over their respective careers.Dr. Tim Williams left everyone emotional when he told everyone in attendance about helping patients across the world in many nations through mPower as he accepted the Sig Gruenwald Humanitarian Award. This continuing education event happened in two half day sessions scheduled in the mornings.  In the afternoons and evenings, attendees did a great many things.  The down time events ranged from boating to horse back riding to hiking to dinner shows and other dining to local attractions like the Shroud of Turin Museum/Gatlinburg Sky Lift & Suspension Bridge/etc. to shopping on tax free weekend at the outlet mall!

At the Board meeting, the TNAGD Board pledged $100,000 over 10 years to the dental schools in Tennessee to help their EFDA Programs.  UT will be expanding their courses to take 210 RDAs annually and Meharry Medical College is relaunching their program beginning this Fall.  This was result of the hard work of a task force assembled at the Winter 2019 Meeting.  Project leaders, Dr. Mike Garrett and Dr. Leon Stanislav deserve the praise for increasing the access to care and helping general dentists be more productive.  They were helped by: Mac Edington, Dr. Kathy Hall, Dr. Keith Gilmore and Dr. Ron Bell.

The next TNAGD Annual Session will be again in Pigeon Forge, TN and on 24-25 July 2020.  What will happen next?  Make sure you are there to say you were there!

Legislative UpdateAs many of you already know this is the last year of the Professional Privilege Tax for Dentists and many other professions. Thanks in great part to the work of our TNAGD Lobbyist Mark Green. What may have slipped your notice was legislation that will make electronic prescriptions mandatory for all schedules as of Jan, 1 2021. Senate bill 810 passed 4/15/19. To see the full text go to Tennessee SB0810 | 2019-2020 | 111th General Assembly

https://legiscan.com/TN/text/SB0810/2019

If you are not currently doing electronic Rx you should check with your software provider and get this process started well before the Jan 2021 deadline. My personnel experience with Eaglesoft is that it will take roughly 3-4 hours with most of that being steps that you the Dr. will need to do. Also, Eaglesoft only has a few people working on Rx so getting in touch with the correct person may take some time (it took me over a month to make connections with her). Now, you have almost 18 months to get this done. It will be easy to put it off thinking "I'll get to this later". Be careful to not forget, if everyone waits till December of 2020 to start working on this some of you will not be ready by Jan, 1 2021.

For sedation permit holders of all levels---- You will be required to have a facility inspection prior to your next license renewal starting 8/12/2019. For a full copy of the rule and the rule making hearing go to  https://www.tn.gov/content/dam/tn/health/healthprofboards/dentistry/Effective%208-12-19.pdf  This basically means having a Board  approved inspector check  your compliance with the drug and equipment list for you permit level that is listed in the BOD rules. Be aware this inspection is something that you schedule at your convenience, they are just there

to check these items. But they can and will report any obvious violations of other Board rules in their report.Offices that have been inspected by AAOMS are considered in compliance. As of 8/2/2019 the Board has not approved any other inspectors. We hope to have several TNAGD members approved as inspectors after the October Board of Dentistry meeting. Anyone interested in being an inspector must have their resume in to the BOD by Sept. 1 to make the agenda for the Oct meeting.

Rep. Carmen Sexton was elected as the new Speaker of the House. If you know him be sure to pass on our congratulations.
