    The Simulation Stage: See What Your Project Will Look Like

    The simulator allows you tosee how your menu will workon an actual DVD/BD player.You can always go back tothe Menu Stage and makechanges if necessary.

    The Output Stage: Output Your Project

    You can also adjust outputsettings, such as whether ornot you want to burn to discafter rendering.

    Adding Source FilesAfter selecting "Start A New Project" in the Start Stage, you go to the Source Stage where the SourceWizard will automatically appear (This can be turned off). From the Source Wizard, you can select whattype of source file you would like to add. You can add files from your computer, DVDs, captures fromDV/HDV camcorders, or digitally recorded programs. This tutorial will show you how to add clips from fileson your computer.

    The term, "clip" refers to the video file inputted into TMPGEnc Authoring Works 4.

    1. Source Wizard: How to Add a Clip

    Click on the "From a file"option in the list of availablesource types.

    This will open a new windowwhere you can select a file.

    1. Select any video file thatyou want to use from alocation on your computer.

    2. After selecting your file,click the "Open" button in thelower-right corner.

    3. Clip Addition Window

    A Clip Addition window shouldopen.

    Edit your clip, or just click"OK" to move on.

    1. Now that you have added aclip, the next step (Menu) isaccessable.

    2. The video file you selectedis now available as a clip inthe clip list.

    3. You can add more videofiles with the options at theupper-right of the screen.

    4. Or, you can edit, addsubtitles, add transitioneffects, or delete your clips.

    Editing ClipsWith the clip editing feature, you can cut out unwanted scenes from your video. You can access the ClipEditing window from the Clip Addition window, or by clicking on the edit button in the clip list in the SourceStage.

    What's What In The Cut-Edit Screen1. ChapterYou can view the chapters setin your clip in this list.Chapters allow viewers toeasily jump to a certain part ofyour clip.

    2. Preview ScreenThis is a preview of thecurrently selected frame. Anyplayback preview while editingwill be shown here.

    3. Thumbnail DisplayYou can quickly navigatethrough your clip via thethumbnail display. The bar inthe middle represents thecurrent frame.

    4. Control PanelThese are the buttons usedfor cut editing.

    Step 1.You can select the content to be cut by navigating your video with the Seek Bar or the

    thumbnail display. Go to the first frame of the section you would like to cut.

    Step 2. After you have picked your first frame, click on the "Set First Frame" button .

    Step 3.Then, navigate to your end frame of the content you would like to cut with the Seek Bar orThumbnail Display.

    Step 4. After you have selected your end frame, click on the "Set End Frame" button .

    Step 5.

    You have now selected the footage you are going to cut which should be highlighted in the

    Thumbnail Display. Simply click the "Cut" button to cut-out the selected section of

    video.Remember that only the content between the Start and End frame will be cut.

    1. After clicking the Cutbutton, the cut section isadded to the chapter list.

    2. The Thumbnail Display willbe automatically updated withthe cut section removed.

    3. Click "OK" to accept thecut(s).

    Besides cut-editing, TMPGEnc Authoring Works 4 allows you to add or edit subtitlesand use audio filters. For more information about what else you can do, please readthe help file included with the software.

    SimulationCheck Your Content By Using SimulationThe Simulation Stage lets you check the content of what you have created so far. The controls of theSimulation Stage are meant to mimic the controls of an actual DVD player's remote, allowing you to seehow your menus will work. It also lets you see how your videos play (play order, motion menus, etc.).

    The Simulation Screen

    1. Preview AreaThis is the main preview areawhere your project will bedisplayed.

    2. Start SimulationbuttonClick this button to start thesimulation.

    3. Directional KeysThese mimic the directionalcontrols on a typical DVDremote.

    4. Playback ControlsThese mimic the playbackcontrols of a DVD player. Youcan also adjust audio ortoggle subtitles.

    If you are satisfied with how your DVD-Video looks in the simulation, click on "Output" to go to the finalstage.

    If you want to fix or change your menus or source files, you can go back to any previous stages to makeyour changes.

    OutputOutputting and Writing Your DVD-VideoThis is the last stage. This is where we will output the project to the DVD-Video format and write (burn) toDVD disc.

    Let's explore the options available on the Output screen.

    The Output Screen

    1. Output Folder NameYou can set the folder nameand output location here.

    2. Transcoder SettingsYou can set a specific outputsize for your DVD files.

    3. Post-Output ProcessSet whether you'd like to writeafter file output.

    4. Writer SettingsSet which writing drive you'dlike to use, along with writingspeed.

    1. Output Folder Name

    Before being able to burn your project to DVD, the program first needs to render and output your clips intothe DVD-Video format onto your computer's hard drive. Here, you can select the output location and setthe folder name for your project.

    Sometimes your content will be bigger than the size of a DVD disc's capacity. The transcode settings willtell the program what the final output size of the project should be. You can select from a number of optionsdepending on the project's format. Since we are making a DVD, the following options are available to us.

    For DVD-Video Mode:None (Transcoding will not be done.)Single Layer DVD Media (4.7 GB)Dual Layer DVD Media (8.5 GB)Custom Target Size (Use target size setting)

    3. Post-Output SettingsIn this tutorial, we will write to DVD after our DVD-Video files are outputted. To do so, we'll need to do thefollowing steps:

    1. Check the box next to "Write to the media disc after output completion."

    2. Click on "Writer Settings" to set our writing drive.

    4. Writer Settings

    1. Set your writing drive andspeed by clicking on thedownward arrow to selectfrom the available options.

    2. Insert a blank DVD intoyour selected drive and click"OK".

    Now that your writing settingsare set, click on the "Startoutput" button to begin theoutput process.

    The Output ScreenOnce you click "Start output", the project will be encoded in the DVD-Video format to the folder specified,and then written with the drive you selected. The screen below is what you will see while this process isoccurring.

    1. This is the preview areathat will show what is currentlybeing processed.

    2. The "Start output" buttonwill change to "Abort output."Click to abort the outputprocess.

    3. Progress BarThis shows the overallprogress of the output. Thebar will first show the progressof the DVD-Video filesoutputting to the folder youspecified, and will then startagain for the writing process.*

    *If you click "Abort output" while the files are being written to the DVD media, theprocess will be aborted and cannot be started from where you left off.However, the DVD-Video files outputted to the folder you specified will still beavailable to use to write the project to DVD.

    Adding SubtitlesEditingEditing Your SubtitlesYou can follow these steps to edit your subtitles.

    In this tutorial, we will set English as subtitle 1 and Japanese as Subtitle 2.

    1. Check the box for Subtitle 1to activate it.

    2. You can select the scenewhere you would like the firstsubtitle to appear by using theseek bar and preview area.

    3. The Seek Bar.

    4. These buttons can navigateyour video frame-by-frame forprecise subtitle insertion.

    5. Once you are at themoment in your video whereyou would like to add yoursubtitle, click the "Add" button.A subtitle text editor windowshould open.

    LayoutDecide where the subtitles will appear on screen. You can select top, bottom, right, or left. If you haveadded an original layout, you may select that too (for more information on how to create an orginal layout,see "Changing Layout and Styles").

    StartThis is the time in your clip where the subtitle will appear. It will show the time of the current frame shown inthe preview area.

    EndThis is the time where your subtitle will disappear from view.

    It is recommended to put at least 0.5 seconds between each subtitle.

    Entering Subtitle Text: Subtitle 1

    Once you are done enteringthe text and setting thestart/end time, layout, etc.,click the "OK" button in theSubtitle Text Editor to returnto the main Clip Editingwindow. Now you should beable to see what the subtitlelooks like in your video clip.

    Accessing The Layout SettingsIn the Subtitle screen, click on the "Edit menu" button and select "Layout editor" from the menu.

    Adding a Custom LayoutGet to the Layout settings by clicking on "Edit menu" and selecting "Layout editor" from the menu", thenfollow these directions.1. Click the "Add Layout" button.

    Upon clicking "Add layout", anew layout should appear inthe Layout list on the left sideof the window. As you cansee, the layout name is"Layout #5". However, youcan change it to whatever youwant.

    2. Set Each Layout Setting

    1. Change the layout name ifyou desire.

    2. Change the font, position,and border settings until youare content.

    3. Back To the Editing Panel

    We are now back at the mainsubtitle window. Take a lookat the subtitle we've alreadycreated from before in theSubtitle Editing Panel; you'llnotice that it still has Layout#1 applied to it.

    4. Edit Subtitle Text

    1. Select the subtitle that youwant to edit in the SubtitleEditing Panel so that it ishighlihted.

    2. Click the "Edit" button.

    5. Changing the Layout

    Upon clicking the "Edit"button, the "Subtitles texteditor" window should appear.From here, we can set thelayout for this particularsubtitle.

    By clicking on the downwardarrow, you can view all of thesaved layouts.

    1. From the layout list, selectour newly created layout,"Layout #05".

    2. Click "OK" to confirm.

    6. Layout Changed!

    The layout for the selectedsubtitle should now bechanged to #05.

    Transition EffectsSlideshowsWhat Are Transition Effects?Transition effects go between images or clips to create an animated effect so that one image/clip cansmoothly transition to the next without an abrupt cut.

    TMPGEnc Authoring Works 4 allows you to add transitions to slideshow images or between clips in a track.You can choose from a wide range of transition effects including "slide in/out", "fold in/out" and much muchmore.

    SlideshowsBefore we can add transitions, we'll need something to add transitions to. So let's create a slideshow.

    1. Adding a SlideshowYou can create a slideshow from the Source Stage. There are two ways to add a slideshow to your project:

    1. Upon entering the SourceStage, the Source Wizardshould appear. You can clickon the "From pictures as aslideshow" button to add aslideshow.

    Set a single effect that will appear between all images in the slideshow.

    Click the downward arrow to select a transition from the list.

    If you click the "Selector" button, it will open the Transition selector window where you can easily select aneffect from various categories or description tags.

    Transition durationYou can set how long you want the transition effects to last by inputting the number of seconds in the inputbox.

    *This setting will not affect the length of your slideshow. For instance, if you set each slide to show for 10seconds and set the transition for 2 seconds, then the transition will start after 8 seconds and end at 10seconds.

    5. Edit MenuThis lets you apply the selected transition to all clips in the track, or lets you delete all transitions.

    6. PreviewYou can preview the transition effects for the selected clip here. The bright blue area in the seek bar showsthe duration of the transition effect.

    7. Click "OK" to confirm your transition effect(s).

    Splitting ClipsIf you want to add transition effects within a single clip, you will first have to split the clip into multiple clips.

    1. Open the Cut Editor

    You can access the Cut Editorwindow by clicking on the"Edit" button in the clip list orby clicking on the "Clip andChapter Editor" button.

    The thumbnails to the right ofthe split point will turn yellowand a chapter mark will beadded at the split point.

    3. Confirm Your Split Point

    Click the "OK" button toconfirm your split point.

    4. Split Clip Options

    Make sure "Split at specifiedpositions and register blueand yellow parts as clip" isselected as the splittingmethod.

    *Depending on how you splityour clip, you may need tochoose a different option. Seethe help file included with thesoftware for more information.

    After selecting the splittingmethod, click on the "Split"button to split the clip.

    Starting OutTMPGEnc Authoring Works 4 allows you to create a menu for your video that is viewable on DVD playersat home or on the computer. With its easy to use menu tools, you can make menus from pre-installedtemplates or even create your own custom menus.

    Accessing the Menu Stage and the Menu Wizard

    To access the Menu Stageand the Menu Wizard, youneed to have added sourcefiles in the Source Stage.Once this is done, you canclick on the "Menu" button toaccess the Menu Stage.

    Once you enter the MenuStage, the Menu Wizardwindow should open.

    Here is a breakdown of the options available in the Menu Wizard (these are the options listed for a DVD-Video project; a BDMV project may vary slightly):

    Select to create your menu in 4:3 aspect ratio.

    Select to create your menu in 16:9 aspect ratio. If you are creating a menu in 16:9 aspect ratio, you canhave more thumbnail buttons than a 4:3 aspect ratio menu.

    Create a menu based on a template.Selecting this will create a menu based on the pre-installed menu templates. Pre-installed menu templatescannot be modified to the extent of a custom menu.

    Create a custom menu by choosing layout and items.Selecting this will allow you to create an original menu, giving you control over the thumbnail layout,buttons, frames, and background. You can also alter the size of thumbnails and edit the navigational pathsof menu items

    No menu.This should only be chosen if you have a single track in your project. If you have multiple tracks and youchoose this option, the DVD may not play correctly.

    Note: You cannot mix 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratio menus.

    Creating A Menu From A Menu TemplateThis section of the tutorial will explore the creation of a DVD menu using the pre-installed menu templates.Note that you cannot change or customize the thumbnail locations or alter their size, however, the numberof thumbnails displayed can be adjusted to match your content.

    1. In the Menu Wizard, selectan aspect ratio for the menu.In this tutorial, we'll use a 4:3aspect ratio.

    1. Select an option for theDisc Insertion Action. This iswhat will happen after youinsert the DVD into the DVDplayer. We'll just keep it on"Play all tracks".Then, select the TrackPlayback End Action. This iswhat will happen after the lastof the track's content hasbeen played. We'll leave it on"Play the next track".

    2. Then, click on the "Next"button to proceed.

    Here is an explanation of each option:

    This will automatically display the first track menu after the disc is inserted into the player.

    This will automatically play all tracks after the disc is inserted into the player.

    This will play the header track only after the disc is inserted in the player.

    Displays the first track menu after a track has finished playing.

    Custom MenusBesides using menu templates, you can create an original menu by selecting menu layouts and menuparts. With a custom menu, you also have control over resizing and moving thumbnails and other menuelements.

    Selecting this will create a single page for the audio and subtitle options of your project. Subsequently,there will be only one menu button to access both audio and subtitle options.

    Selecting this will create separate menu pages for audio and subtitle options. Subsequently, there will betwo menu buttons: one to access the audio options and one to access subtitle options.

    When playing a DVD, you can go back to the menu by pressing the "menu" button on your DVD remote.Checking this option will make the DVD player go to the menu associated with the current title/chapter youwere viewing.

    1. From this screen, you canchoose the layout of the topand track menus, plus choosea design for the menuelements. Click on a tab toselect the menu part youwould like to set.

    Only custom menus can be edited in the following manner; menus created fromtemplates cannot be changed.

    What's What in the Menu Editing Screen

    1. The menu pages will bedisplayed in this list. You canexpand top and track menusto see all of the pages withineach menu.

    2. This is the menu item listthat displays the menu partswithin the selected menupage.

    At the top of the menu editing screen, there are three tabs:

    This tab will display a list of all of the menus and their pages. Use this to easily select a page for editing orview all of your menu pages.

    Editing Custom Menus: Placement And ResizingYou've got your thumbnail selected, now let's learn how to move it around and resize it.

    How To Move and Resize Menu Items

    1. You can move thethumbnail by simply draggingit with your mouse pointer.Notice that when your mousecursor moves over thethumbnail, the cursor turnsinto a 4-way directional cross.This means that you canmove it freely.

    2. Now for resizing. Notice thesmall boxes at the cornersand edges of the thumbnail?These are anchor points thatyou can click and drag toresize the thumbnail. Try it outnow!

    1. Use the picture file settingsto replace the thumbnail withanother image or video file onyour computer. You can usevideos such as MPEG-1,MPEG-2, or use still imagessuch as BMP or JPEG files.

    3. The other settings maintainthe aspect ratio when scalingimages and set whether or notto loop video thumbnails(motion menus must beactivated for this to takeaffect).

    Menu Item Editor: EffectsTo access the Effects window, simply click on the Effects tab in the Menu Item Editor.

    What's What In the Effects Window

    1. These are all the availableeffects. You can click on aneffect to select it.

    2. This green button meansthat the effect is active. Youcan click on the this area toactivate/deactivate an effect.

    3. These are the settings forthe selected effect.

    4. You can save the setting ofyour effects as a template fileto use later.

    Let's Try Using An EffectFor this tutorial we'll use the Color Correction effect on our thumbnail image.

    1. First, let's activate the ColorCorrection effect. You canactivate it by clicking on theempty circle in the corner ofthe Color Correction button sothat it turns green.

    2. Then, let's adjust the colorcorrection settings in thiswindow.

    Link EditorThe Link Editor allows you to change what happens when you navigate your menu with a DVD remote'sdirectional buttons. For instance, this allows you to change what happens when you press the right arrowbutton on your DVD remote.

    You can access the Link Editor in the Menu Stage by clicking on the Link Editor tab.

    1. First, Select A Menu Item

    When you click on a menuitem, a bounding box willappear around the item alongwith lines that show how it islinked to other menu items.

    2. Let's Change A Link

    You'll notice that the boundingbox around the menu item hasfour anchor points, one oneach side. These representthe directional keys on yourDVD remote. So the anchor

    To edit this link, click on theanchor point and drag it. You'llsee a visible line followingyour cursor as you drag it.

    3. Drag the Point to Another Menu Item

    You can now drag this pointto another menu item. Noticethat it automatically "snaps" toother menu items.

    4. The Link Has Been Edited!

    You have now altered the linkbetween these two menuitems. You can alter any linkfor any selectable menu item.

    5. Checking Your LinksTo test how your links work, you'll have to go to the Simulation Stage.

    1. Click on the Simulationbutton to go to the SimulationStage.

    2. Click on the "Start" buttonto begin the simulation.

    6. Using the Simulation Controls

    After the simulation hasstarted, you can click on the"Top Menu" or "Track Menu"buttons to access those menupages.

    Once there, you can select amenu item and use thedirectional buttons to test howyour links work with a DVDremote.

    3. Building Motion Menus

    Once you click on the "Motion"button, the software will needto build the motion menus forpreview. This will take a fewmoments depending on thenumber of pages andthumbnails.

    4. Motion Menu Simulation Started!

    Once the motion menus aredone building, they willautomatically start playing inthe preview window. You cannow navigate your DVD menuas you would on a real DVDplayer and see what yourmotion thumbnails look like!
