TMI opens as West Texas Military Academy, founded by Bishop James Steptoe Johnston,

and located near Fort Sam Houston.

The Alkek Campus opens in northwest San Antonio, located on Tejas Trail.

TMI completes its move to the Alamo Heights campus on College Boulevard.

Registrants of the Students Army Training Corps report to WTMA for a commission in the Army. In 1919, the Corps is designated as an ROTC (later JROTC) unit. WTMA changes its name to Texas Military Institute after

merging with the San Antonio Academy Upper School.

TMI dedicates two new residence halls in 2005, a third in 2006, and completes construction on All Saints Chapel in 2008.

General Douglas MacArthur, Class of 1897, returns to visit TMI during a 1951 speaking tour.

General Douglas MacArthur graduates in the Class of 1897 as the school’s first valedictorian.

TMI organizes its chapter of the National Honor

Society, one of the first at a private school.

President Kennedy visits TMI the day before his assassination. The first female students

attend TMI and the school separates into Upper and Middle School. In 1974, the Corps of Cadets becomes optional.

TMI changes its name from Texas Military Institute to

TMI – The Episcopal School of Texas.

Today, the school educates over 470 students in grades 6-12. Our Corps of Cadets has maintained a long tradition of being designated an Honor Unit with Distinction for more than 20 consecutive years and the five- and seven-day

residential life programs provide a home away from home for nearly 60 students.

At a Glance

TMI’s Commitment to Compassion, a core value esteemed at TMI, helps guide students to serve others through acts of charity, mentoring, and ecological stewardship. The student-led Interact Club leads many of the community-wide service projects and builds relationships with organizations in the local community to provide students many opportunities to serve. Promoting a lifelong awareness of how we can use our own gifts to improve the lives of others, even in small ways, is a guiding principle of our community.

Parent Activities Student Support Service to OthersParents are vital to our community and breathe life into every event, activity, and program that TMI offers. From supporting their individual student in academics and extracurricular activities to volunteering with the many parent organizations and special events that our school offers, parents are the ones who make this community a better place. We encourage you to become active in the Family Association, Booster Club, Corps of Cadets, Fine Arts; to serve on our special event committees, parent Annual Fund cabinets, or anywhere your passions lie; and to fully experience what it is to be a part of “Dear Old TMI.”

From day one, students have a strong support system of dedicated faculty and counselors. They instantly become members of the community with our Panther Pals program, matching sixth grade students with a senior Panther Pal to provide mentorship and guidance throughout the school year. As students advance through the grades, structured programs such as Cadet Tutoring provide unique opportunities for peer-to-peer academic assistance. Faculty also help guide students through young-adult trends and issues, such as digital responsibility and supporting one another, through the Advisory Program where faculty lead discussions with their advisory classes in a small-group setting.

Welcome to our CommunityAt a Glance

Instilling the values of empathy and compassion, lived out in acts of service.

ACADEMICS TMI is an academic community where scholarship is paramount. College Prep, Honors, and college-level Advanced Placement courses challenge TMI scholars to discover the scope of their abilities. The outdoor classroom gives students the opportunity to conduct archaeological digs in the nature center, explore the skies in the observatory, and cultivate a garden in the Hill Country.

ATHLETICS The Athletic Department teaches values such as teamwork, sportsmanship, and perseverance, while providing a valuable physical fitness component. The campus houses a state-of-the-art weight room; eight-lane, all-weather track; fitness center; studio for dance and cheer; two gymnasiums and an indoor swimming pool.

The School Pillars

MILITARY Designated as one of the highest ranked Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) programs in the country, this optional program develops leadership skills. Values emphasized through the Corps include integrity, dependability, self-discipline, commitment, respect, and loyalty.

SPIRITUALITY Spirituality and character development are at the heart of what we do. Daily chapel is a time of prayer, song, scripture, and meditation on our own spiritual journey. Our Religious Studies program engages students intellectually in Christian scripture, world religions, and philosophy. At TMI, we seek to model Jesus’ own hospitality to all people, regardless of their cultural or religious backgrounds.

Creative ExpressionFINE ARTS TMI introduces multiple artistic avenues to students while helping to refine individual talent through creative expression. TMI’s award-winning and talented faculty encourage students to explore their creative potential through several different disciplines: visual arts, music, theater, and digital photography/videography/graphic design. The community is enriched by performances from the band and choir through Christmas and spring concerts, dramatic productions for both the Upper School and Middle School, and student artwork displayed around the campus. The belief in offering enrichment for the whole student is ever present in the commitment of the Fine Arts Department.

5-day and 7-day boarding options attract students from surrounding Texas cities and

all around the globe.

Boarding OpportunitiesCreative Expression

DID YOU KNOW? TMI’s boarding program attracts students from around the globe, bringing a unique sense of culture and community that enriches the lives of all students at TMI. Approximately 60 boarders create a positive impact by sharing and learning with their fellow classmates through intercultural celebrations, religious diversity, and student clubs. TMI’s dedicated residential life faculty and staff create a home away from home for all students who board at TMI. Each dorm has an assigned dorm parent and the boarding community gets together for nightly dinners, weekend activities, and faculty-led study sessions.

res life - 8th grade

Community Outreach: Service and compassion are among TMI’s core values. Student-led service projects during the year instill in students a lifelong awareness of how we can use our own gifts to improve the lives of others.

Embracing Technology: With programs such as robotics and cyber security, TMI prepares interested students to excel in the STEM fields.

Team Building & Growth: Retreats and field trips throughout the school year allow students to form lasting bonds with their classmates and take part in new experiences that challenge their comfort zones and push them to reach new heights; gaining confidence, pride, and the knowledge that they can overcome obstacles – both physical and emotional.

Beyond the Classroom: A world of discovery awaits students just outside the classroom. With a student-cultivated garden, chickens, an observatory, and an 82-acre campus, faculty use creative and dynamic curriculum to engage students.

A world of opportunity awaits at TMI!

res life - 8th grade

Student Athletes: Our coaching staff is dedicated to promoting the maturity of our students, both physically and academically, encouraging high levels of success in curricular and extracurricular endeavors to produce exceptional servant leaders.

Boarding: Open to students in 8th through 12th grade, TMI’s boarding program is a close-knit community that enjoys dinners together, stays in comfortably furnished rooms, and experiences a structured environment for study halls and recreation.

Journey into Spirituality: As students seek the meaning of our existence and grow in their spiritual beliefs, unique opportunities for annual Servant Leader Adventures take students on a path filled with spiritual fulfillment and service to others.

Corps Programs: As members of the distinguished Corps of Cadets, students can also participate in a number of teams such as the Orienteering Team, Saber Guard, Rifle Team, Cyber Patriot, Color Guard, and Bagpipes and Drumline.

Middle School CurriculumCHARACTER EDUCATION

Character education is paramount in the Middle School curriculum for the development of our students. Through team-building activities that begin

in the first few days of school to ongoing activities that encourage students to not just grow, but flourish.

MENTORSHIP The Peer Mentor and Panther Pals programs give Middle School students a friend and mentor as they progress through their time at TMI. As a part

of the Panther Pals program, a senior student is assigned as a Panther Pal to a sixth grade student to help guide and encourage during the year. Peer Mentors are Upper School students who are trained to lead a grade-level group of Middle School students every other week and focus on Middle School issues.

SERVICE Numerous opportunities exist in the Middle School to help students learn the value of helping others.

Whether during a Middle School mission trip or through the school’s service-centered organization, Interact, students are taught to respect and help others.

Welcome to Middle School!

Journey to Upper School

EXTRACURRICULAR OPPORTUNITIES In addition to challenging academics, students can participate in a variety of competitive sports, academically-related and hobby- or skill-related clubs, and the theater and music programs. Over one-third of the student body participates in the nationally distinguished JROTC program, which boasts the award of Honor Unit with Distinction.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT & HONORS All students study a college preparatory curriculum. Honors and Advanced Placement courses are offered in English, mathematics, science, history, studio art, and foreign languages.

COLLEGE COUNSELING TMI’s college counseling staff work one-on-one with students to guide them through the college application and selection process during their Upper School years and provide numerous opportunities, both on and off campus, for students to meet with admissions staff from various universities.

Educating Servant Leaders

Since 1893

Scholarship is paramount at TMI. The tone is set by qualified and dedicated faculty who pass on their own love of learning, taking the time to promote intellectual, emotional, physical, moral, and spiritual development. As students progress through the classical foundation of knowledge, they are encouraged to pursue their academic passions.

“TMI taught me to think critically, seek the

underlying meaning and not take things at face

value. Most importantly, I gained the confidence and drive to pursue my

dreams.”

– Christopher Wagner ‘86

“The ability to make connections is essential for a successful college experience. TMI’s small, caring community has allowed me to foster these skills. I’ve learned how to approach a teacher if I’m struggling, how to seek out help from peers and faculty, and how to properly conduct conversation in a small group setting.”

– Elizabeth Holmes ’17

“The vast array of high-level classes have allowed me to maximize my potential and learning, and I feel well prepared for college. I’ve learned valuable time-management skills, but also how to balance work with play.”

“Being awarded the Alkek Scholarship [was] central to my development…confidence spilled over into all aspects of my life, and in particular it made me unafraid to set some lofty goals while at TMI, which ultimately resulted in my acceptance to and graduation from Notre Dame’s top-ranked undergraduate business program.”

“An education from TMI is truly unmatched. Nowhere else will you be nurtured as a whole individual and prepared to pursue a purposeful life with passion and curiosity. My time at dear old TMI formed the foundation for intellectual, spiritual and professional excellence that I carry with me each and every day.”
