We live in uncertain times. Under more normal circumstances, this would be a festive season, with weddings, and badminton tournaments, and sweater-clad people celebrating the end of exams by going on joyrides and hanging out. Now our days are punctuated by bomb blasts and burning buses, the constant fear of violence on the streets, and a growing restlessness from being homebound. Exam schedules have been warped, and “weekends” don’t mean anything anymore.

And yet in spite of it all, life goes on. In spite of the fear, people are trying to get stuff done. Friendships and relationships are still forming every day, memories are being made,

experiences had, gossip shared, little intrigues played out. We remain indomitable, in the face of it all. Suddenly, the Hunger Games series is so relevant.

With that in mind, we’ve put together a feast for you. From candy-themed rooms (Page 2) to a full-on food safari (page 6-7), to sweet confessions (page 8), there are treats aplenty for you.

Let us know how we did! Post your thoughts on our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/dhakatribunetmag

The day-counting dietsVarying from the “one day diet” to a 40 day no solids diet, some of these schemes are extremely taxing on our bodies. Usually, these diets have a low carb intake, focusing mostly on fruits, veggies, and fibres. The catch, however, is that these diets are extremely restricted and minimalistic. A first timer would probably be in a nasty mood all day while their friends gorge down burgers or mix a dollop of khichuri with beef. Forget studying, you’ll be too busy dreaming about the day your diet ends and secretly take out your notebook to check out the list of restaurants you want to hurry to once the diet is over.

Liquids onlyThey are formulated to be easy to prepare, so at most you will need one lemon, some pepper, and loads of water. You are allowed this tasteless concoction all day and NOTHING ELSE. Some may have it in them to not be tempted by the lunches at their school cafeteria and the eateries all over the city, but for most, this is a nightmare. Our greed for food is so carnal that we may end up taking just ONE bite of that shwarma, but that is a journey going downhill.

Expert adviceFad diets seem to be the utmost solution for young women these days. The word diet means a healthy balanced meal; it does not mean to starve! Diets like GM diet and the Atkins to name a few, are just not worth it in the long run. These diets ruin your metabolism and weaken

your digestive system. Eating at the right time and getting a minimum of six to eight hours of sleep each night will ensure you your healthy wellbeing. Adding exercises such as aerobics, walking and spending time at the gym always works. Even a stroll in the park is good enough if you have a busy schedule. To eat a balanced diet, with any form of activity, and a good night’s sleep is key to sustain good health and not to mention, an envious figure.- Nibras Panni, senior instructor at The Dazzle Ltd for weight training, aerobics and power yoga Natasha RahmaN

TMAG’s Room of the week!

TAHSIN MOMIN

diEt no morE

Plotting on colour Including both loud and soft, the dessert theme itself is loaded with a bunch of colour schemes. Painting the four walls with one basic tone can be a good idea. Add more drama to it by adorning the walls with tiny floral or cup cake designs. Besides, merging two or more colours in a striped design will be well worth your planning time. Cotton pink, jelly yellow, and purple will be perfect for a girl’s room and opt for blue and green, if it’s a boy’s.

Window adornmentStriped fabric would be a bad choice if you already have this design on the walls. Keep three layers if you can; heavy fabric on the outside, transparent chiffon or tissue in the middle, and a sparkly crystal beaded curtain for the inner most layer. This combination will visually create a look similar to that of royal icing on cake. When choosing colours

for the curtains, keep the basic colour schemes you started with, in mind. Since it’s dessert themed, try to avoid dull or gloomy colours and if you want to add a little more shine, go with glitter.

Floor treatment Try to keep the floor simple by adding a single bright rug. Imagine you’re walking on a red shag rug into your dream land. Don’t forget to place small round shaped rugs that resemble candy to go with the theme. Some other features need attention such as bedding and the corners. Don’t stress over bed sheets with unique designs, keep it plain. On the other hand, you can beautify the whole bed scene with dessert shaped pillows. Since its winter, a gorgeous lantern can be added to enhance the look. Hang a large blank photo frame over the dazzling wall. It will be as refreshing as a wall mural and it’s a time-saver as well. saudia afRiN

Funk up your room

yummy“Forget love, I’d rather fall in dessert” is what most dessert lovers would say. Most of us live in little worlds of our own. What if one placed all their favourite desserts in one place? “Charlie and the chocolate factory,” and “Candy Land,” did exactly that and both movies are undoubtedly rich in the aspect of candy. Decorating both movie scenarios gives you the impression that the work must have been fun yet easy. However, a clear view and plan was what helped to achieve the right look. This week TMAG is on board with loads of colourful dessert ideas to make your living space a SWEET place

Fad diets and supplement pills are all over the TV, the net, and your conscious mom’s eyes. It’s quite a natural phenomenon to see youngsters get their antennas up and go crazy over these diets. It may work on your bodies in the short term, but in the long run, these diets will surely harm your system

Seasonal selectionsTake advantage of the seasonal selections and turn your box into a fruit platter. You can take the staples, like your apples, oranges, and bananas. Add to that the seasonal bests, a little mango or lychee in the summer and strawberries in the winter. Undoubtedly, summer is the best time for this colour-bomb of a lunch box.

The brunch boxFor those of us who skip the morning breakfast, turning the afternoon snack into brunch is also a smashing idea. Consider a little French toast with a mini burger, perhaps a flask full of orange juice to go with it? Or for a quicker, more portable selection: bananas with chicken pastries, chai in the flask. You can adjust and select your brunch box to suit you, and it’s a great excuse to offer your mum, when the early morning breakfast just isn’t working for you.

CrunchFor the light eaters, ever think of combining vegetables and nuts? The crunchy combo will not disappoint you since the choices go from likely to the unlikely. Chicken cashew nut salad, Greek salad with almonds, as well as papaya salad with cashews. You could also try wasabi nuts with carrot sticks and corn kernels on the side. The combinations are endless.

Punch of flavoursFor those of you who want to stick to the staples-your fried rice, noodles, and sandwiches-you can spice up the box with a few packets of flavour. Add a dash of chilli flakes to your noodles. Squeeze out the punchy tangs of the Nandos peri-peri sauce into your rice. Add a little zest to the chicken sandwich with a dollop of mustard. You can get small sachets of numerous other spices and spreads, from various stores and restaurants around Dhaka. afshaN sattaR

ChocolateThis tops the list of favourites, almost every time. While you can accuse the sugars in chocolate for putting extra pounds on you and cause acne breakouts, chocolate on its own though, contains skin friendly anti-oxidants and happy compounds. These attributes can give both your skin and your mood a boost. No wonder spas have introduced chocolate treatments and cocoa body butters are so effective.

Fried foodOlive oil, almond oil, and avocado oil are usually rich in beautifying skin ingredients so we can safely assume that it’s not so according to a woman’s health magazine, much the oils as it is the carbs. That heaping plate of french fries will probably affect your skin but complex carbs like those in sweet potatoes are less likely to cause acne. Banana chips, anyone?

CheeseDairy products are not trouble makers for the skin. If you experience acne break outs after a heavenly mozzarella covered pizza, you have a condition that is unique to you. Try switching to hemp

or soy milk, even to sheep or goat dairy products, they are less prone to affect your skin. Yoghurt is your best bet if you want healthy, glowing skin that will also remain firm till a ripe, old age.

DessertsNot all dessert in the form of cakes

and wheat is bad for you. Whole wheat and oats can make for yummy desserts and can be your skin’s best friend. Use natural sweeteners like honey, in moderation, and be liberal with fruits in your fruit salad. Desserts can be more than just cakes, oat waffles are a thing, people! muNiRa fidai

Some foods are easy to eat. You pop it in and it disappears. However, for foods that are on the messier side, like a bowl of spaghetti with meat sauce or the whopper burger with ketchup and mayo, it’s just not fair to eat that with a napkin looking all prim and proper. It deserves a gigantic bite with its ends falling off while you struggle to get each morsel of food in your mouth. While you can easily clean up the mess around your mouth, it won’t be as easy for your clothes. Here we have, five ways you can enjoy your food and not break into a sweat over the spilt food bits on your prized clothing.

The magic of vinegar Oil stains, fruit juice splashes, black coffee, and tea stains will all vanish with the help of the magic ingredient - vinegar. Dip a toothbrush or sponge in white vinegar and brush it on the trouble spot. Let it dry out and repeat till the stain vanishes.

Chewing gum disasterChewing gum stuck on your favourite pants or that party shirt you have been saving for months? Don’t worry, get out your stash of ice cubes and scrape it out gently with a table knife. Get a colour-friendly liquid detergent and rinse thoroughly in water.

Milking out the stainsYes, you heard it right. Milk works wonders for the resilient stains on your fabrics. Your parents may flip at the idea of you wasting milk but if it’s your favourite sweater, or jeans, it is worth it. Take a bowl and fill it with milk and soak your precious fabric in it for about 15 minutes. The colour of the milk will change significantly, depending on what the stain is. For instance, if it’s a marker pen stain, the milk should change into the pen’s colour.

Keepin’ it wheel

Gasoline and diesel are still kings of the fuel supply chain, but alternative fuels are now tipping the scales toward green

go ClEan!

To reduce our dependence on expensive, polluting fossil fuels, a lot of new energy sources are being explored, but the world of alternative energy can often seem strange and unpredictable. It turns out there are energy sources out there that are much more bizarre than corn and sugar. For the most part, almost anything that can be burned can be used as fuel, but to really work on a large scale, an alternate energy source has to meet certain criteria.

You might be surprised by some of the alternative fuel solutions available, but which of these ideas are pure crank science and which have a real chance of changing the world, is the real question.

Let’s get ourselves acquainted with the six most common choices for alternative fuel; energy sources that most certainly have proven their worth and are here to stay.

EthanolAn alcohol-based alternative fuel made by fermenting and distilling crops

such as corn, barley or wheat, it can be blended with gasoline to increase octane levels and improve emission quality. Natural gasNatural gas is an alternative fuel that burns clean and is already widely available to people in many countries through utilities that provide natural gas to homes and businesses.

ElectricityElectricity can be used as alternative fuel for battery-powered electric and fuel-cell vehicles. Battery powered electric vehicles store power in batteries that are recharged by plugging the vehicle into a standard electrical outlet.

HydrogenHydrogen can be mixed with natural gas to create alternative fuel for vehicles that use certain types of internal combustion engines. Hydrogen is also used in fuel-cell vehicles that run on electricity produced by the petro-chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen in the fuel “stack.”

PropanePropane, also known as liquefied petroleum gas or LPG, is a byproduct of natural gas processing and crude oil refining. Already widely used as a fuel for cooking and heating, propane is also a popular alternative fuel for vehicles.

BiodieselBiodiesel is an alternative fuel based on vegetable oils or animal fats, even those recycled after restaurants have used them for cooking. Vehicle engines can be converted to burn biodiesel in its pure form and biodiesel can also be blended with petroleum diesel to be used in unmodified engines.

While chotpotis and phuchkas are usually considered to be pocket-friendly meals, what if, by some sad chance of fate, even that is something you cannot afford? That’s where the “cha-naan” comes in. Yes, you read that right. A hot, freshly baked naan and a steaming hot cup of tea costs anything between Tk20 to Tk40. Calm those demons with this appetiser before you hit the streets for a main course, a specialised little treat called the “all-time butter bun” costing Tk15 at max. With its simple packaging deeming it a fairly more hygienic alternative, the butter on this treat will make you reel in creamy delight. As for those of you who can go a little off-

budget, opt for a meat packed shwarma from any nearby “grill chicken” store. However, if you find yourself in the possession of Tk100 to Tk200, rest assured that you are not going home on an empty stomach.

If you live near the Old Dhaka area, you can gorge on everything from Kachchi Biriyani, Chicken Biriyani, and Tehari along with roti and different types of kebabs. Take a stroll through Bongshal and Nazimuddin road and let those Tk200 take you places; TMAG assures you it will. Perhaps you may even be able to finish off your meal with a chilled cup of faluda or a thick glass of lassi.

It's hard to believe there was a time before the food cart renaissance, but now the city’s flooded with mobile eateries around every corner. These meals on wheels offer all sorts of cuisines, and are parked in different neighbourhoods. Here are a few TMAG favourites.

AWeSoMe burGerLocation In the corner of the alley behind Westin, GulshanTime of business 4pm-12am

Awesome Burger does its business out of a cart at a unofficial happening place. What makes AB unique is their choices of add-ons; jalapenos, mushrooms, egg, beef bacon, and cheese to go with the luscious patty. All the burgers are within Tk300 with the cheapest being the egg burger at Tk60. The add-ons can range between Tk20 and Tk50. The end result is a fantastic burger on a tight student budget. You can also go for the hot dog, which offers the same add-ons as the burgers.

QuIcKbIteLocation On the parking ground of Shimanto Square, road 2, DhanmondiTime of business 10am-10pm

QB is equipped with real meat, grilled cheese sandwich, and burger melts that are definitely not for the weak hearted and will cost within Tk150. Their sandwiches have all the ingredients of a dainty sandwich - grilled chicken, lettuce, cucumber, tomato, onions, shredded carrots, cheese melted. Also available are wide array of sauces, and cream, all the other vital condiments in

the world. After waiting in the queue for your sandwich, if you still do not feel love at first bite, you are not meant to have this heavenly sandwich in the first place.

tItbItSLocation At the side of the lake of Sector 7, UttaraTime of business 4pm-10:30pm

Want a juicy sandwich full of meat, mustard, and other lip-smacking items? TiTBiTs is the right option for you. For those who have heard of, or tasted Subway sandwiches and want something similar in Dhaka - TiTBiTs is Subway’s Bangladeshi cousin. Starting from the price range of Tk80, the biggest sandwich which is a foot long will cost Tk200. They have variety as well, you can choose your desired one from beef steak, tandoori chicken, chicken salami, beef BBQ, and egg sausage. Their names are pretty catchy too, like MitMit, Chick Chick, Chit Pit etc.

hot & roLLLocation On the parking ground of Shimanto Square, road 2, DhanmondiTime of business 10am-10pm

Hot & Roll is fresh and it is unique in

every way possible. Served like giant ice-cream cones with different fillings, they are absolutely scrumptious. Prices are practical too, with the savoury rolls costing Tk160 and the sweet rolls costing Tk150. The savoury fillings contain curry chicken, chicken and cheese, pizza, double cheese onion, black pepper beef, bolognese beef, BBQ chicken, satay cheese, tempura fish, and tuna salad. The sweet fillings take in strawberry and chocolate chip, banana chocolate, apple cinnamon, coconut jam, cheese, crunchy peanut and, ice-cream.

beNGAL MeAt FASt FooDLocation On the parking ground of Shimanto Square, road 2, DhanmondiTime of business 10am-10pm

The BM grilled cheese burger has everything needed for a supreme abdominal orgasm. It is ground meat patty trapped between two grilled/toasted buns, and layered by a thick slice of cheese melting in the baking process. The secret burger condiments would soak into the inner layers of the bun and bring about the perfect moist for the beef/chicken to turn on its flavour. Tasting this sinfully cheesy burger will definitely bring out the inner devil in you.

We have short winters that are getting shorter every year. In this brief spell, if there’s one food that really brings the season home, it is pitha. Over this period, every corner of the road becomes a pitha junction. These rice and molasses treats create a festive feeling to be shared with loved ones.

Bhapa, chitoi, and teller pitha are the most common and easy to get over this season. Start walking through a road, and you will get more than five food shops offering these delicacies within five minutes. This great experience costs very little. Tk50 can create a joyous moment.

EvEry CakE has a silvEr liningNusrat Tabassum, baker and cake artist at Silver Lining in atete-a-tete with RuBaB Nayeem KhaN

What gave birth to Silver Lining? Silver Lining was born out of the common love for good food and to share it with others. Disappointed with store-bought desserts and cakes, we felt there was a need for quality, homemade desserts that were made to order so people could savour the actual taste. Thus, Silver Lining came into being.

How many people are managing the business? My sister, Rizwana and I are running the business. I am the patisserie of the customised cakes and my sister Rizwana takes care of the day-to-day operations of the business.

Which dessert item is the trickiest to make?Desserts itself are quite tricky compared to other foods since you don't really know how they turn out

until they're done. So far, macaroons have been the trickiest to make.

Which item sells the most? Our most popular item on the menu is Red Velvet cupcakes, especially the ones with Oreo cream cheese frosting.

Which dessert items are your favourite(s)? Our favourites are the cheesecakes and the lemon meringue pies

What inspires you to continue your journey with Silver Lining? When we get awesome reviews on a dessert item or heartfelt appreciation of our work, it is enough to fuel our journey with Silver Lining.

A message for those who are passionate about baking? Keep on baking!

a CakE a day kEEps thE doCtor awayNatasha RahmaN chats with the person behind the one stop solution for bakers, Nazmun Nahar

Could you give me a brief description of Bake My Day.It is the first ever baking accessory page in Bangladesh. We sell a wide range of baking items starting from moulds, liners, to even cake mixes for amateurs. It’s been around for three and a half months since we launched but we are proud to say we are supplying to almost all the baking pages on Facebook. When it’s new it attracts a lot of people. The Flourist is one of our biggest customers.

Who is behind this business? We are three, my friend Shihad Hasan, my sister Kamrun Nahar, and myself Nazmun Nahar. My friend and I are finishing off our bachelors and my sister is still in school. We have different routines and time schedules, which kind of helps to split the work, as a result someone is always free to attend to the page, answer queries, and upload new stuff.

Is it a lucrative business for Dhaka? We just started so it’s hard to say, but being one of its kinds in Dhaka at the moment, has its share of profit.

What do you enjoy the most about being in this business? The messages that I get from customers totally makes my day.

What are your future plans? We eventually plan to open a shop.

The response is truly amazing, and when some of the customers come to pick items up from my place, they hug me or bring cupcakes. Can’t wait to have a shop where this will be an everyday thing.

What challenges have you faced so far in establishing Bake My Day?A majority of our items are from UK and they arrive by cargo. So they are almost always late, which keeps our customers on hold and no one likes to wait now, do they? We are working on fixing this.

What are some of the items you would recommend for those who love baking? For a beginner (like me), the cake mix, they just can’t go wrong and there is so many to chose from. We have lots of office going customers who prefer them because it saves time and tastes heavenly. For professionals, the fondant, and recently we have been introduced to a kind of colour called lorAnn oils, they act as both a colouring as well as a flavouring agent.

What are the most popular items on your Facebook page? The chocolate fountain, for Tk2,000, they were the hottest picks last month. We got orders from restaurants, party organisers, and from a husband for his pregnant wife.

ConfEssions of a swEEt toothHi there, my house is a veritable tribute to the altar of sugar gods. Any given day you drop by, you’ll find me baking cakes, cupcakes, truffles, souffles, and even making ice-cream. Yes, I do all that. Almost every night, 12am onwards. Confession time: "I don’t bake for the love of it." I bake so that I wouldn’t go and kill somebody who had royally ticked me off. It’s a positive channelling of energies you could say, if you went for the frou frou lifestyle philosophies. I don’t, I just like the desserts. The sweet, luscious goodies that result from one of my monster sprees are just the cherries on top really. However, whatever your reason might be, baking is fun. That’s

what you want after all, right? Then again, my baking connects me to my loved ones. I learnt it from my aunts and my mum. They baked with me next to them, “helping out." I do the same with my nephew and niece (who do a better job than I ever could at their age). I guess you could say, baking to me is a circle of love too! Anyone scared of it, think of it as a fun chemistry project. Can you imagine the number of ways you could manipulate the core ingredients of sugar, butter, flour, eggs, and baking powder? How about I give you one? Easiest 20 minutes of your life. My eight year old nephew makes these. You have NO excuse!

dark yEt EntErtainingThere’s a lot to admire about Karrie Fransman who has built herself up from being a web-comic author to working for The Times. She then moved onto publishing a graphic novel that generated a lot of buzz.

The House That Groaned focuses on the inhabitants of a Victorian settlement, six lonely individuals who are radically different from each other and bear their own eccentric personalities, but are tied together by the house they live in.

The group of characters are certainly unique ranging from a make-up artist to a photographer to a girl struggling to stay thin and a man whose bedroom activities are dubious to say the least. Despite the difference in characters, Fransman does well with the help of noir-influenced art and the interactions are a lot of fun to read. The development of characters is done using flashbacks and it all feels organic as the story progresses and these strangers go from not knowing each other to falling in love.

The feel and tone of the book is certainly dark but it’s filled with moments of humour. It all seems a little bizarre but the humour and characters definitely grow on you although those who have read Will Eisner’s Dropsie Avenue will notice the similarities in terms of the plot.

The artwork leaves a lot to be desired though; while it’s certainly different, it’s clunky and hard to follow at times – there are a few moments of genuinely good art, particularly the panels involving character flashbacks, but overall it’s hard to get into it.

All in all, it’s a fun read and packed with good ideas but the art drags it down. Having said that, the dark humour and interesting characters ensure that the book is worth a read. faRdeeN ameeN

The light flickered once and Liz panicked. A bit a of storm was brewing, with the wind wailing like the shrill of a poltergeist. She was home alone with her adopted sister.

As she sat alone on the couch downstairs, pushing in to watch the Saw marathon, her sister was in deep sleep, loaded up on serotonin. The back door burst open abruptly. Liz hid in her blanket as her heart raced at warp speed. She scurried into the kitchen and saw nothing but pitch-darkness.

The door was split in pint sized remains. With no door, the dingy alley looked like a desert with tumbleweed.

It is well documented that players such as Pele, Maradona, Zidane, Cryuff, Ronaldinho, and many other soccer legends began on the streets, in unorganised settings.

A lot of players in the Bangladesh underground football scenario are quite astonishing and to give these talented players a platform, Bangladesh Underground Football Association recently organised an event named “Bangladesh Underground Street Football 2013.” Located in Dhanmondi, the Abahani pitch witnessed what could easily be called one of the biggest underground street football tournaments in the country.

Even though street soccer tournaments are organised in countries all around the world, this is a first for Bangladesh. 16 teams took part in the three-day long tournament, which was held from December 4-6. The teams

There was nothing outside her doorstep. The obscure weather made Liz even more ill at ease, to know what was going on.

Walking down to the basement, she saw a white blur going right through her in the blink of an eye, it was as though she had witnessed a supernatural manifestation. She was suddenly lost.

Oblivious to her actions, Liz picked up an axe from downstairs. She headed to her sister’s bedroom. She tiptoed quietly upstairs, axe in hand. Her pink dress rustled softly as she slowly opened the door and stared at her sister. She was asleep and her chest rose and fell peacefully. saBa sattaR

The sequel to “Size 12 is Not Fat” has Heather Wells about to embark on her first semester of school, while being the assistant dorm director at Fischer Hall. Heather hopes that the free classes following her work probation will help her forget the horrors of the previous year. A degree, coupled with a cool new boss (who isn’t planning on murdering her), convinced her that it would be a good, uneventful year. However, a bubbly cheerleader’s decapitated head was found bubbling away in a pot on the stove in the cafeteria, while the rest of her remains missing. As it always is with Ms Wells, wherever she steps, complications follow. On the personal front too this

remains quite applicable, her father had just gotten out of prison “camp” and he’s come to New York, and showed up at her doorstep. Her ex-fiance, Jordan is causing all sorts of trouble for her while he is about to get married.

Add to that, she’s still in love with her roommate Cooper, who shows no signs of reciprocating her feelings. Guess Ms Wells’ uneventful semester just got a little more complicated. Meg Cabot’s amazing and with this intelligent, fluffy chick-lit mystery, she proved once again that The Princess Diaries madness wasn’t a fluke. Everyone needs to catch up on the Heather Wells series!

pans of mElodyDuring casual musical hangouts, we sometimes tend to improvise instruments to add to the beat. This culture led on to the invention of a formal instrument, using only the bottoms of industrially disposed 55 gallon oil drums. Voila! And the steel pan was invented. Known for its simplicity, the steel pan has become an icon of Trinidadian street music and culture.

Its beginnings were traced back to the 1930s, when metal objects such as car parts, dustbins, tin jars etc were being used as musical instruments. However, at a certain point, these basic materials began to be tuned for more precision. The steel pan surface was hammered into sequences of dents and hallows, each producing a different note. The skill and proficiency of using steel pans have been

developed from Trinidad and Tobago’s Carnival percussion groups, known as Tamboo Bamboo, in the early 20th century.

That being said, don’t get the wrong idea here, for its not simply a scratched up drum bell. Nowadays, thanks to specialised technology, state of the art steel pans are crafted for professionals. It is highly utilised by bands from Trinidad and Tobago, who perform all year and are known to perform numerous genres of music. Be it caribbean, latin, jazz or classical music, the steel pan serves them all. Even music schools and development centres there coach people in using this unorthodox instrument. In the end, it’s use may be limited to one culture, but it’s potential is not to be underestimated in the music community. Rad shaRaR

and Tajwar on guitars, M4 slapping the bass, Tihan on the drums, and lastly EFX on turntables. Bishoo says: “Ishraq, our ex-bassist was on a leave, after his mother passed away. He decided to quit the band, after our first gig on October 16, 2009.” Since then though, the band has performed with artists from other bands such as Zafir Huq (guitarist from Nemesis), AK Rahul (guitarist from Trainwreck/Poraho), Muhammad Tahmid Hussain (vocalist from Heal), and many others. When asked about their current projects, they said: “We haven’t recorded anything recently, but we have been working our way towards a solo album. Basically we are working on several originals at the moment.” Their songs “CritiX” and “Circling Down” have gained widespread popularity among fans. Bishoo adds: “Our songs delve into the serious aspects of lives. “CritiX” was about the will power to do something despite being criticised and ‘Circling

Down’ was against drug abuse.” The band has played at events such as, ISD Battle of the Bands, Hybrid 0.5, AKS Autumn Fiesta, and a few others. They have gained recognition for their stage acts; face paint and guitar spins are also a part of their gig, and this has the fans clamouring for more. When asked about their future plans, they said: “We want to release an album with at least 12 songs. We are also thinking about releasing a single under the name “Step Aside” along with a music video to promote it right before the release of the album.” Aside from playing alternative rock, they plan on combining all genres in order to deliver something entirely different to their fans. If you haven’t heard them play, tune into www.reverbnation.com/minus2theband to listen to their tracks or follow them on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/minus2theband/ info to get updates on their upcoming gigs.

spotLightsoulful fourA lot of people say: “Music is the only way to cheer you up, express your thoughts.” But where quality is concerned, you must admit that it should express more than just a sound. Each and every aspect, lyrics, tones, musical style, and even inspiration matters when producing the perfect piece. And to deliver that piece to their audience, bands of musicians jam together. Indalo is one such band that is comprised of popular talents. Their line-up; Jon, Black’s former vocalist, Zubair, former guitarist of Aashor, Titu, former bassist of Aashor and Black, and Dio, drummer for Nemesis; came together in 2012.

They started off by doing regular gigs

all around Dhaka; pure rock sensation is what would describe them best. Covering Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Queens of the Stone Age, and so on, they received massive praises from their fans. However, after a few gigs, Titu took a break from the music scene, and his spot was later filled by Bart.

The band performed in many high profile shows, such as, Rocknation I and II, Hall of Rock, etc. This year Indalo has released their single titled “I.S.D.” along with a music video which has already amassed widespread fame. Currently they are working on their upcoming release, so be on the lookout for Indalo’s upcoming album. imtiaz salim

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is the second in what is to be a 4-part movie series of the adaptations of young-adult literature written by Suzanne Collins. These movies are working on richer source material than other such movie series (Stephenie Meyer’s magnum opus, the Twilight Saga, for example), and despite the best efforts of the studio fat-cats involved, manages to barely succeed.

Unfortunately, for lovers of the book, the movie distils profound story elements from the book into laughable themes. Looking at things from the perspective of self-centred, victory-driven reality television participants only makes us empathize with the slimy television culture Collins looks to reproach. If you can get past these problems, you’re in for a fun ride. It’s been a year since the last Games, and President Snow’s rule in the capital is slowly crumbling. The resistance has appropriated Katniss Everdeen’s Mockingjay symbol for its own purposes, and is now gunning for a fight with the Capital.

At a bladder-punishing 2 hours and 30 minutes, this “Hunger Games” movie is surprisingly thin on any Hunger Games. Despite this, you won’t feel disappointed, because the pacing and the script are polished and well-executed, juggling character development and story velocity well, interweaving the two tastefully.

ProsGood eye-candy, both the cast and the special effects; A well-told story

Epic Mealtime is a Youtube cooking show filmed in Canada and famous internationally. The USP for this particular show is in its attempts to create meals with off-the-chart caloric counts, usually featuring generous helpings of meat (especially bacon) and alcohol (Jack Daniels seems to be a favourite). The host is the angry and foul-mouthed Harley Morenstein, whose cussing is bleeped out by bird calls.

turn into blocks of over baked biscuit, “The Cake Boss” shows you everything that can go wrong, but also how everything comes together in the end.

This show is enjoyable for not just cake enthusiasts (both bakers and eaters) but for everyone looking for a

fun show. It’s got risks, catastrophes, anxiety, regret, teamwork, and ultimate success. Along the way, there are some horrid disasters and clever innovations, but ultimately, they reach the point where they can spread the sprinkles on top. afshaN sattaR

Consider such meaty monstrosities as the Turbacon Epic Thanksgiving, which featured a quail inside a Cornish hen, inside a chicken, inside a duck, inside a turkey, stuffed into a pig, lined with croissant stuffing, 10lbs of bacon and pork sausage.

We’d give you another example, but just typing this one out caused a heartburn. In other words, do not try this at home.

If you’ve still got an appetite left, give them a gander. But be warned. They might just eat it.

Good news, foodies! When it comes to recipe apps, there are a ton of good options, but to make life easier for you, TMAG picked the best one out of the lot.

Allthecooks Recipes app adds the ability to quickly find and record recipes using voice or gesture on glass. The step-by-step cards are easy to follow and are extremely useful since cooking requires you to have your hands free. The sleek interface is easy to navigate and the app includes 150,000+ recipes that are illustrated with mouth watering pictures. Each recipe has tabs telling you about the ingredients, directions for

making it, suggest alternative choices, user feedback on the recipe, and nutrition facts. This app also includes an “On Hand” tab, where you can find recipes based on the ingredients you already have. The shopping list is pretty healthy and to make it better you can even email the recipe to a friend or share it on social networking websites. Being able to quickly search and follow a recipe without using your hands is perfect for the home cook who is busy preparing a meal and doesn’t want to fumble with a tablet or smartphone. All that being said, we wish that the app would let us move to the next step without having to get our glass all sloppy. There are some improvements to allow us to read longer instructions for more complex recipes. tahsiN momiN

The Cake Boss is an American reality show, which shows the crew at Carlo’s Bakery, New Jersey preparing elaborate themed cakes for various occasions.

Each episode follows the preparation of two separate cakes for numerous events, going from weddings, to fund raisers, to theme parties, and launch events.

It’s one of those shows from which you can claim to learn something (just to justify the hour you spent watching it), but will come out gawking at the screen and thinking, “wait, how did they do that again?”

Watching this show will also give you a good idea of how much effort and risk goes into baking an elaborate cake. From the failed frostings, to the curdled custards, to the cakes that

I walked out of the bathroom without fastening my belt. By the time I realised it, both ends of my belt were dangling.

My friend and I were on our way home in a CNG during the oborodh. On our way out of Kawranbazar, some picketers chased our vehicle, throwing cocktails at us. My friend held on to me, and asked me if I was scared. I thought for a second and replied “I’m alarmed.”

My ex-boyfriend called me. At first I didn’t bother to pick up, but then I called him back. I didn’t realise that it was his house number that I had called. I assumed he’d pick up, so I started screaming and swearing at the top of my lungs, till the person on the other end replied: “This is his father speaking.”

I went to a family friend’s holud. The girl was very emotional about being married off, so she was crying a lot. I went up on stage to apply turmeric on her and ended up tripping on the carpet. That certainly stopped her from crying.

My aunt put chilli sauce on my head for fun. My scalp was burning.
