    Chapter 1

The TM technique takes twenty minutes twice a day, morningand evening. You simply sit down comfortably, close your eyes,

As a result of this, the mind is allowed to settle into a state of complete

rest. Note that no attempt is made to make the mind settle...once you start

the technique, the process happens by itself, without control or coercion.

is lack of eort or control actually distinguishes TM

from most other techniques of relaxation and meditation.

    THE TECHNIQUE

What is the Transcendental Meditation (TM) technique?

It is a simple, natural, eortless procedure practiced 20 min-

utes twice each day while sitting comfortably with the eyes closed.

Its not a religion, philosophy, or lifestyle. Its the most widely prac-

    WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU MEDITATE?

The Transcendental Meditation technique allows your mind to settle

inward beyond thought to experience the source of thought pure

and begin the simple mental technique taught by certied teachers.

eld. is is the most silent and peaceful level of consciousness your

innermost Self. In this state of restful alertness, your brain functions

with signicantly greater coherence and your body gains deep rest.

HOW MANY PEOPLE PRACTICE THE TM TECHNIQUE?

More than ve million people worldwide have learned this simple, natural technique people of all ages, cultures, and religions making it one of the most popular of all meditation techniques.

How much scientic research has been done on the TM technique?

e TM technique is the most widely researched of all meditation tech-

niques. Over 600 research studies have been conducted at more than

250 universities and research centers (including Harvard, UCLA, and

Stanford). ese studies have been published in more than 100 journals.

WHERE DID THE TM TECHNIQUE COME FROM?

    T

he Transcendental Meditation technique is based on the ancient Vedic

tradition of enlightenment in India.is knowledge has been handed

down by Vedic masters from generation to generation for thousands of years.

About 50 years ago, Maharishi the representative in our age of the

Vedic tradition introduced Transcendental Meditation to the world,

restoring the knowledge and experience of higher states of conscious-

ness at this critical time for humanity. When we teach the Transcen-

dental Meditation technique today, we maintain the same procedures

used by teachers thousands of years ago for maximum eectiveness.

HOW IS THE TM TECHNIQUE DIFFERENT FROM OTHER MEDI

    TATION TECHNIQUES?

There are many forms of meditation, with many goals. Other prac-tices most often involve some concentration or control of themind and others involve contemplationthinking about something.

Some of these practices keep the mind engaged in some way,

for example, by focusing on an object or on something like your

breath. Others keep us aware of thoughts, or images. These prac-

tices keep the mind active in some way on the surface thinking level.

TM allows the mind to simply, naturally and eortlessly transcend think-

ing and to experience a deep state of restfully alert consciousness. e

holistic benets that have been found to result from the practice of the

TM technique are the automatic result of this unique experience.

No belief required: e Transcendental Meditation technique does

not involve belief. In fact, you can be thoroughly skeptical and the

technique will still be fully eective.

    5

Develops the total brain: Brain research shows that the Transcen-

creativity and intelligence and improving decision-making and problem-

    solving abilities.

6Not a lifestyle: e Transcendental Meditation technique is not a

reducing stress and stress-related disorders, including hypertension, high

    cholesterol, stroke and atherosclerosis.

8Unique:e Transcendental Meditation technique is unlike any other

Transcendental Meditation promotes stillnessand when youare still is the only time you can think, the only time you canfocus. When you have distractions and noise in your mind, you

cant comprehend properly and you cant do your job. Comprehen-

sion comes from stillness, focus comes from stillness, and TM is

the practice of touching that stillness for a few minutes twice a day.

I have never missed a meditation in 34 years. I meditate oncein the morning and once in the afternoon for about 20 min-utes each time. Then I go about the business of my day. I find

increases. The pleasure of life grows. And negativity recedes.

The National Institutes of Health has granted over $20 million tostudy the eects of the Transcendental Meditation program on theprevention and treatment of heart disease, hypertension, and stroke.

In addition, hundreds of other studies have been conducted on the

benecial eects of the TM program for mind, health, behavior, and

society at over 210 independent universities and research institutions

in 33 countries, including Harvard, Yale, and UCLA Medical School.

    HOW STRESS DAMAGES THE HEART

Psychological stress has been shown to increase activation of the

sympathetic nervous system and other areas critical to heart health.

This increased activation releases a set of stress hormones which

lead to faster heart rate, increased cardiac output, and narrower

arteries. These changes, in turn, create increased blood pressure.

Activat ion of these systems a lso accelerates the prog-

ress of atherosclerosis and can lead to plaque rupture, which

results in angina and coronary heart disease and stroke.

e twice-daily practice of the Transcendental Meditation technique reduces

activation of the sympathetic nervous systemwhich, in turn, dilates the

blood vessels and reduces stress hormones and provides stress relief.

T TM T A Y BHOW STRESS DAMAGES THE BRAIN

Stress, pressure, fatigue, poor diet, alcohol, and drugs damage neuralconnections between the brains prefrontal cortexor CEOand the rest of the brain. When you are overtired or under intense

mental or physical stress, the brain bypasses its higher, rational

frontal executive circuits, and starts using more primitive pathways.

Consequently, you respond to daily demands without thinking; you make

impulsive, shortsighted decisions. When the CEO goes oine, strong emo-

tions, such as fear and anger, take over, adversely coloring your view of the world.

The stress-reducing TM technique provides the experi-ence of restful alertness, which reduces stress, strength-ens communication between the brains prefrontal cortex and dif-

Extensive research published in leading scientic journals demonstratesthat the powerful, stress-reducing eect of the Transcendental Medita-tion technique has a calming, spill-over eect in the surrounding population.

When individuals practice the Transcendental Meditation and the

advanced TM-Sidhi program together in groups, the research has showna dramatic and immediate reduction in societal stress, crime, violence,

and conictand an increase in coherence, positivity, and peace in

    society as a whole.

For a forest to be green

When Maharishi rst introduced the Transcendental Meditationtechnique in 1958, he emphasized that individual peace is the

basic unit of world peace. He used the analogy that just as there cannot

be a green forest without green trees, there cannot be a peaceful world

    without peaceful individuals.

TRANSFORMING LIFE AT THE DEEPEST LEVEL

Even though there are many sincere individuals dedicated to the causeof peace, establishing peace requires more than simply adopting apsychological belief in peace. Maharishi explained that when the mind

and body are deeply at peace, then thought, speech, and action will

spontaneously radiate an inuence of harmony into the environment.

thereby reducing societal stress, crime, and violence nationally and

    internationally.
